What's great about it: Vastly improves the audio output vs. the TV speakers.
What's not so great: No onscreen indication of audio level.
The Bose Solo Sound System is a very simple way to really improve the audio output of a flat screen TV vs. using the TV's speakers. It has an easy setup; just plug in the optical cable and power cord and that's it. The included remote is simple to use, but I sync'ed the system with my Comcast remote so that everything is controlled with one remote. Now we can hear all of the actors' dialogue, movies sound great, the music sounds much better, and sporting events have a more "realistic" sound. I bought the system on sale and used my Best Buy member points to save even more. Very happy with the purchase of this product.

Does / can TV's remote control the volume level?

I don't want to have to use 2 remotes to control volume while watching TV. So, my question is: Can the volume level of the external speaker be controlled by the TV's own remote?
Yes, you can use the TV remote to control the volume level. Use the method described in your TV remote manual to synchronize other devices to your remote. If you use Comcast, and your remote is newer, with a red power button, the code you would want is either 31229 or 31933. If you use Verizon or another cable provider, you can probably look up the code online or just call them for the code.
