This router is not for the pros but it is the best router I've used for home. I've had Asus routers up to the 87R but I find the WRT1900AC easier to use and not so complicated that I might make a mistake in setting it up. I recommend this router for home users who are starting out, but still want a router that has plenty of power and whistles for a good sized home.
I would recommend this to a friend!

can this support wifi calling, and/or be used as an wifi extender

Any wireless router can be used with wifi calling (like for T-mobile). You have to make sure that your access speed is fast enough. I would recommend a speed of at least 10 mbits/sec.

Can this device be used as a wireless access point plugged into a LAN on an existing wired network?

Will the router interfere with the wired router that manages the wired network?
Yes, it can. It is one of the options. That's a lot of money to be used only as an access point. I used mine with wired and wireless clients since it has a built-in gigabit ports.

Why is one $50 and another $250?

Why is one $50 and another $250?
Bsically, the difference is speed and having the latest and greatest product. You can get by with a $50 router, if you have a small house with few walls. Also the WRT1900AC has plenty of power to go through many walls, even at the 5Ghz band.
