What's great about it: Quality
What's not so great: There are no negatives
I have used APC backup/ups in several models for over 30 years. They are great. They last many years, they are reliable, their warranty is great (if you should ever need it). They also make batteries for replacement of old ones after years of use (should you ever need one).
I wouldn't use anything else. I have used them on many systems over the years with regrets.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Protecting a Desktop PC

I am confused by the answer to a prior question which I copied below. I need to surge protect a desktop PC plus external drives, router etc., but also if there is a power outage I need enough battery backup to allow me to save files on my desktop PC and/or external drive and then close everything down. Will it do that ok? Isn't that what its for?

Because it is intended to protect networking equipment (ie modem, router, etc. vs a PC), we do not include a cable to connect to a PC or the software to monitor from a PC"
You should have a regular BU routine. If critical, build in automatic periodic backups during the time your system is running. I commented on the units I have used and not a network BB. For that I would suggest you contact APC for info on a network system. Those are an entirely different animal.

How long does the battery last once the power goes out?

Have never measured it. Time is determined by the amount of hardware running while on BB. If several items on BB, more than enough time to power down on a personal unit. The bigger the unit, the more time. If 1pc only, it will last quite a while if the battery isn't several years old.

The size and model of the BB determine the amount of battery life, however, the amount of equipment (including multioutlets used on the BB sockets and age of the battery will determine how long one could expect.

There isn't an easy answer.

My old E650R UPS from APC had a Powerchute s/w package and online status

My original E650R from APC had a nice Powerchute software monitor which hooked in via the dataport... this new system mandates that no connection be made through the dataport (manufacturing only??). Is there any means of monitoring status from my laptop????
Not that I am aware of. Not on the several models I have used
