I picked up this WD 1TB External Hardrive to transport music, pictures, videos, and documents from one computer to another and to save space on my new 2in1. It works great with no issues and I bought it for reasonable price considering the capacity.

Can I use it for storing and using my genealogy files?

I do genealogy research and want to know if I can put my family files here and work with them the same as on an internal drive? This would save a lot of flash drives.
It's external hard drive you can store all files from an internal computer's hard drive on it and plug it in when you need it. You can add and remove files from the Hardrive whenever it's plugged in to a computer or laptop. Think of it as a more advanced flash drive. I think it should do the trick.

none
The hard drive utilizes the power source of whatever you plug it into.
