What to buy

already have an ethernet cable running from my computer to my direct tv box and I now need another line for my blu ray player to use all the features. Do I need a ethernet hub or switch and what is the differance?
Hubs manage the network traffic a bit. A switch just pass is it low long. You can use a hub coming out of your modem and a switch if you just need to connect a bunch of devices past the hub/router.

Hub manages the traffic, switch just passes it along. Your switch would be fine.

Can I plug my Cable Modem into this switch and then run it to my wireless router located upstairs?

I'm using a Apple Time Capsule.
Yes that should not be a problem.
