It is a graduation gift. So as of right now I have no idea how good it is. I do have trust in Toshiba though.

Can I watch any other TV program while recording 4 separate programs?

Also, do I need a special card if I've gotten rid of my Comcast Cable box?
Yes you can watch other programs while recording. There is a card that you get from the cable company that will need to be installed into the TiVo unit.
