Can the power be connected directly to the machine?

My current dryer has the power cable connected directly to the machine. Does this dryer need a 3 or 4 prong plug to be connected to an outlet or can the power cable be directly connected to the machine? I just need to know if I need an outlet installed.
Depending on the outlet, a new 3 or 4 prong plug and cord has to be purchased separately as the dryer does not come with an attached cord.
