The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G prime lens is an awesome lens. It is pin sharp and produces good color resolution. It is too long to be a standard lens on a DX body, but works well for portraits. Of course, it is a bit short for portraits on an FX body, but then it could be used as a standard lens on an FX. I bought this lens mainly for portraits, but it is on my camera for most of the time as it is such a great lens. Apart from the sharpness and the clarity, it renders the out of focus areas nicely as well.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Will this lens take good macro style shots?
Will it focus up close for detailed pictures of flowers, etc?
It will not produce a true macro shot, since you cannot focus up close, but you can crop to get a macro type shot. The sharpness and clarity of this lens is superb, so you can create very good crops.
