I was a bit on the fence on if a wifi-extender would work. Although after using it in my own house its has proved to be really useful and help issues with the wifi having to go through several walls.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I'm looking for something to use near our security dvr - so that I can connect an ethernet cable from the dvr to the extender (our router is at the other end of the house), would this work if I plugged it in near the dvr and connected the ethernet?

Yes this will work perfectly fine for that. I was acutally using one of these to run my computer off of for a while.
