Do you have to use a window vent?

Yes. The unit blows cold air from the top vent and draws in room air all over the back. But there is an exhaust port on the back that blows *hot* air. You need to exhaust the hot air out of the room, otherwise your room temperature will not change (actually it will get hotter).
