I purchased the Epson Photo V600 from Best Buy about 14 days ago and found almost immediately that Digital ICE does not work with my new iMac that is running MacOS 11 Big Sur. In fact, Digital ICE did not work with the last version of the MacOS 10.5.5 Catalina.
I was pleased when I learned that Silverfast was offered for free to correct this problem; however, it's the cheapest version of Silverfast, Silverfast SE and it's outdated (rev 8.8.0.24) from November 2020.
So my software is six months old, and my scanner is seven days old.
When I tried to update it to the latest version, which is now Silverfast 9 SE without paying the full price, which is $99, there is no discounted rate for registered users, which I am. However, since Epson made a deal with Silverfast, then there's no discounted updates or discounted upgrades. It's like we're not really registered users -- Epson is the registered user, and we received a gift. I don't want a gift -- I want a scanner that works as advertised. The selling point of this scanner is the Digital ICE dust and scratch removal, as it's promoted on both the Best Buy and Epson websites. They even have the Digital ICE logo emblazoned on the bottom left of the front of the scanner.
I am very disappointed and displeased, and if I cannot get a discounted version of this update or a discount on an upgrade to SE Plus, for example, then I am going to return it Best Buy as I have nine days left to return it, which I am certainly going to do. I'd rather wait for Epson to come out with a new version of an affordable flatbed photo scanner than have one that doesn't work as promoted.
If you have a Mac that's running Catalina or Big Sur, then I recommend that you consider an alternative. Otherwise, be prepared to shell out more than $100 to update it, and even more to upgrade it.
I don't understand why Epson continues to sell this product when Digital ICE stop working on the MacOS years ago as well as offering an outdated version of Silverfast that can be updated or upgraded at discount.

I have never spent this much on a router; however, I was told that the Netgear Nighthawk was one of the best for a house of my size and the number of the devices I had. It worked wonderfully for about 8 months, but then the “auto updates” stopped working.
I am now permanently stuck on Firmware Version 1.4.1.50_1.3.10 and unable to update it to the latest Firmware Version 1.4.1.68.
One only needs to go to the NETGEAR Community on their website and do a search for R8000P firmware, and you will see all of the posts that there is no fix for this. If you’re lucky, you might be able to return your current router for a refurb that has been updated, but you’ll get no warranty. Next time, I am getting an extended Best Buy warranty and a modem other than NETGEAR.

I’m seeing mixed reviews on whether or not this scanner is compatible with Mac OS Catalina. Does the software change and have to be reconfigured every time there is a Mac update? If there are issues, who is it that we contact for help?

The selling point of this scanner is the Digital ICE dust and scratch removal, which is done by hardware. The last version it worked on was Mojave. For Catalina and Big Sur users, the fix is “free copy” of Silverfast SE software, which removes dust and scratches through software. Unfortunately, the version they included is Silverfast 8.8.0,, which was upgraded to Silverfast SE 9 in December 2020. Silverfast will not update to v9.0, and Epson customer service said that they have no plans to upgrade or update it. They said that I would have to purchase the software, which would be discounted if we were really Silverfast customers. We are not. Epson was the Silverfast customer. It costs $99 to upgrade the software, which is about half the price of the scanner. Absurd suggestion by Epson customer service.

Will this scanner be compatible with macOS Big Sur?

The Epson Scanner will work; however, Digital ICE will not work. And Epson’s fix is providing a license to Silverfast SE. Unfortunately, the software is v8.8.0 and the latest software is v9.0, which came out in December 2020. After calling Epson customer service today, Epson has no plans to allow customers to update to Silverfast v9. So you would be buying an obsolete scanner with obsolete software. You can always buy Silverfast 9.0, but it’s $99. About half of the price of the scanner.
