Not a vacuum but a wide, stiff, spinning whisk brush and catch bin that picks up surprising amount of debris that would quickly clog ordinary vacuums including “shop vacs.” Ideal for outdoor rugs, mats, carpets. Inside - garage and basement, pet and plant or garden areas. Small twigs, pebbles, dirt, clumps, hair, spilled cereals or messy granular (litter) whatever...all get swept up almost silently. Much lighter and quieter than noisy vacuums. Tried it and immediately bought a second. Use both! Long battery life, too. A remarkable product that gets little recognition— is overshadowed by expensive noisy vacuum cleaners.

How is this unit for picking up sand off tile at a beach house?
Not as good as using a real vacuum cleaner with strong suction. Sand is hard on those, as well...quickly clogging filters. This Bissell Sweeper is best with larger items...spilled cereal, food crumbs, dirt clumps, hay or grass clippings, cat litter, sawdust. Sand might be too fine for the bristles to sweep into the bin. A shopvac is a better choice if you routinely need to vacuum sand off tile floors.

Is this a bagless sweeper? If so, is it easy to empty?
Yes. Bagless with generous collection bin. Bin is clear and easy to shake empty over a trash can. Takes a few seconds. Keep in mind this is NOT a vacuum but a sweeping rolling whisk brush that pushes dirt and particles into the collection bin. And does it quietly, quickly. Useful addition to vacuuming later.

Can you buy replacement rechargeable batteries?
Theoretically the NM battery can be replaced. But you need to be good at reassembling the motor, belt, wheels when swapping out an exhausted battery. Entails 10 screws to be removed on underside to gain access to battery pack. Pack unclips and replacement—if available from Bissell—goes in. Likely cheaper to purchase new unit after 2-3 years...but for handy person, replacing NM battery is doable.

Does this vac have a brush or just hard plastic part that touches the hardwood floor
It has a brush...a cylinder brush that is moderately stiff and effectively sweeps up debris (including stuck on dirt or litter) dropping it into its bin. The brush is like a whisk or hair brush with long bristles. Highly effective.
