In the world of audio components, it’s difficult yo know if what you propose to buy does as advertised. Obviously it takes some knowledge of audio equipment and hifi sound. And since so many of us lack those skills we often purchase a product based on inaccurate info and find ourselves disappointed. Thus component is just the opposites. It actually exceeds as advertised.
To begin with, the 120x is an update of the 120. The 120 was advertised as a professional turntable suitable for DJ use as well as home. In this update, Audio Technica decided to go with the home use side of the coin. They dropped all DJ functions such as reverse drive. They also listened to their customers by providing a phono line that is detachable along with a phono/line switch do one can use an exterior preamp and not the turntable’s built in preamp. A slightly improved magnetic cartridge is also included. Finally they dropped the price by appx $50.
These improvements are fine, but most important is the sound. And in that area, It’s very good. It provides a sharp and broad sound. The lows are very warm but accurate. No over baring thumping here. The highs do not “buzz out”. The stereo separation is great.
All the controls are a breeze to use. The tone arm balance, the downforce and anti skate controls performed well. I tested the anti skate force with positive results. The speed control and strobe reader worked perfectly.
The stylus “light” was and probably will always be unnecessary, but it looks nice.
The iso pads were easily adjusted to achieve balance. While doing so I could tell the pads provided excellent suspension.
I purchased the black colored turntable which gives it a striking look. It’s pretty large compared to others in this category which lends it a retro look. It resembles turntables of yesteryear, the 1980’s. It’s pretty heavy and has a well made look.
The fact is, this component does all it claims and more. It exceeded my expectations both in looks, sound, and construction.
Highly recommend for both a beginner and one who like to spin vinyl.
I would recommend this to a friend!

One thing I know about music systems is that you cannot overcome bad speakers. However, good speakers can overcome
a lot of issues caused by sub par components. I was taught they are the most important part of your system. Of course, much of that is debatable, but it goes to demonstrate the importance of speakers.
These little Bookshelves are a rare bird. They are well made, nice looking, very portable, have a nice sound, and are extremely affordable. They are a very nice two way speaker system.
To begin: they are well manufactured. For instance, the box is real wood. The tweeter is top rate and even carries the Polk logo. Everywhere you look, they ooze quality more often seen in speakers costing two or three times as much. C
They are a true bookshelf speaker. There are some advertised as such but one would fine difficult to place on a shelf or anywhere that space is at a premium. These can fit almost anywhere. In fact the have a nice wooden back with a keyhole opening for wall mounting. And, the reflex opening is on the front face to enable flush mounting. A great job of engineering.
The sound is exquisite. The highs are good that at this price, it’s hard to believe. Cymbals are well defined without smearing. The bass is respectable when shelf mounted, but very good when positioned closer to the floor. The low range had the high quality warm sound.
They look great and sound great. The only con I can come up with is the sometimes softness of the low end frequency. But that depends a good bit on placement.
These have been around a while and almost every review is good. That’s because these are great speakers. They are a modern day legend.
Highly recommend.

Bring together your analog and digital music collection with this 2-channel Sony receiver. Its phono input lets you hook up a record player directly, and its Bluetooth capability allows convenient wireless streaming from compatible devices. This Sony receiver has a built-in power amplifier for clear, distortion-free sound, and the rigid chassis minimizes vibration.

A good start.

The heart of a stereo system is the receiver (or in some cases an amp). It’s the center of the process. It gathers info from components that start the process such as a turntable and than send that info to speakers. It must do so with little distortion. And it needs to be versatile enough to run this process in an orderly manner.
This little Sony Receiver does this well.
It has several inputs by which it gathers sound from various sources such as a turntable. And the sound it puts out is very clean.
It seems to do a good job in almost all areas concerning sound reproduction. Almost unnoticeable distortion with good stereo separation. It has more than adequate power at 100 Watts per channel. The phono preamp sounds fine.
The controls are nice with a good feel. It has a nice sleek look. It receives Bluetooth easily enough.
There are a few issues.
It cannot transmit Bluetooth which could be a problem for some equipment one might choose to use. Also the FM antenna is a fully dedicated wire to input system. In a word it’s terrible. Barely brings in a station. And being fully dedicated, it cannot be easily upgraded. One has to employ a smart phone as a tuner and than use Bluetooth. That’s not good.
At any rate, all considered, this is a good receiver that was almost very good. It’s a nice start for a newbie or for someone with limited demands for power and usage.
Recommendable with some reservations.

I bought thus turntable a few months ago as part of a desire to get back into HIFI. I was looking for an entry level component, but I wanted to be sure it was a HIFI instrument. I purchased it from a web based company and told the sales person as such. To be sure it was considered HIFI, and not trusting his knowledge on this subject I asked if it came with a magnetic cartridge. He said yes.
Well, he was right to a point. The Sony PSLX300USB uses a magnetic cartridge, and by that logic it would be considered HIFI, but just barely.
It sounds good, not great, but pleasing. On some recordings it seems to lack dynamic range. It seems able to reproduce low frequencies well such as bass or large drums. The stereo separation seems good. And, there is no background noise. It’s very quiet.
It looks good. It’s had a nice, slick look. With iso legs, removable dust cover, and an all black presentation.
It’s fully auto, but I’ve had some problems with the stylus missing the edge of the vinyl. This was so prevalent I now operate it as a semi auto. It has a damped cuing button do it’s not a problem.
So, it has a lot if good points. However, there are some issues:
The permanently placed magnetic cartridge means I am unable to upgrade the cartridge. I purchase better stylus, but I’m stuck with the cartridge.
The counter balance is factory set, so I cannot adjust the downforce. And, unless I purchase a downforce gauge I have to assume the factory set it correctly.
I have been told it has an anti skip force factory installed. Again, no way to check.
I’m short, this is indeed an entry level turntable. It sounds good and since I upgraded the stylus one level up, I imagine it sounds as good as many higher priced turntables.
But, it has a few shortcomings. Even though it sounds good, I believe it’s close to the limit for upgrades. So, I’m stuck with the sound it’s now producing.
One can adjust the speed, but only by inserting a small flathead screwdriver in a small slit like opening at the underside of the unit. To say the least it inconvenient. And one cannot gauge the speed except by using an outside device such as an app on a smart phone.
When one considers all the above, I would be unable to recommend this to a newbie unless they were properly informed. It’s sounds good, looks good, but I’m the long run a dead end device.
It’s HIFI, but just barely so....
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Incredulously, I came across these speakers while attempting to upgrade the sound of my system. I felt adding a pair of high quality speakers might feel the voids I noticed in the present system.
So, these speakers were purchased as an addition to my system. I did not anticipate the magnitude of improvement. I have been using a pair of Polk Audio T15s and a pair of off brand bass reflect speakers from years past. I was pretty sure I could do better.
I put the Sony’s on the top shelf of my stereo stand and repositioned the Polks to the bottom shelf. They are just a few inches above the floor.
To describe the sound with one word: Heavenly. The Polks had an immediate improvement especially with the bass. It was do much better, it was staggering. The base was clear and loud, without breaking up or drowning out the rest of the sound.
But what amazed me the most, was the performance of the Sony’s. They provided excellent sound all along the frequency range. The bass was strong without being booming. It was easy to notice an individual bass guitar. And, the same could be said about the high range. Cymbals crashed without distortion. High end guitar cords were wonderfully reproduced.
In wide orchestra pieces, I could swear I could pick up individual instruments. A good example is the drums booming over thenother instruments without overwhelming the music. I am sure they benefit from the 3 way speaker layout.
They look really nice though not spectacular. They are boxed in an unimpressive non wood enclosure. It resembles smooth particle board. However the speakers look great as do the grills.
One area that could concern me is that the speakers are not magnetically shielded as and this could effect sound from such items as a TV screen.
But in all, these are excellent speakers.
Highly recommend

I mean the whole casing not just the platter. Is the actual whole casing metal?

No, the entire unit is not all metal. A good portion appears to be made of high impact plastic.

is it difficult to change the needle when necessary?

I believe it should be easy, but that is a delicate process with all magnetic cartridges regardless of brand. .

Does this model have automatic needle return when the album is finished?

No, this is a fully manual turntable. One has to place the stylus on the vinyl at the start, lift it and place it in the arm rest when done.

It has a nice up and down level with damped quing to let the arm down softly.

Can the cover be removed and what height would it be w/o the cover? Looking to put it in a cabinet on top of my Yamaha receiver but not a lot of space so considered taking cover off to fit the space if needed. Max space is 4 1/2 inches.

I believe that is too tight. Check the on line specs. It should have the dimensions.

1. Can you connect wireless speakers to it? 2. What speakers is it compatible with?

This is not a Bluetooth turntable. So, if u mean by Bluetooth than no.

But if you mean by wire, yes i believe so, but that will depend on the speakers, if they are capable of a wired hookup to the turntable. Check out the back of the speakers and see if one has a “phono in” section of RCA inputs. If so, that indicates the speakers are active, they will have a built in amp.

You will need an amp. These are not active speakers and thus need amplification. An integrated amp such as a receiver will work fine.

I need to power them, what type preamp is best

If I understand your question, these will run right into your integrated amp or receiver . You should not need a preamp. However if you prefer to use a preamp with an amplifier the hookup should the same as with an integrated amp or receiver. I really can’t comment on different brands.

Do these sound great w/ vintage LP's on a Audio Technica turntable ?

Almost surely. Some find the bass a little light an add a subwoofer. I never felt the need.

How easy are these speakers hooked up to my TV or a turntable, a boombox?

All that depends on the items you mentioned and not the speakers. You might hook them up, but to fan sound, you will need some type of amplifier.

Can I connect the Polk Audio 5 1/4" bookshelf speakers to a Victrola record player with a RCA cable

These are not active speakers. They need an amp to produce sound. So, unless that player u mentioned has a built in amp, well that might connect, but no sound....
