Won't boot into F12 before startup. This is because Windows must be loaded before it will work. Also, will not wake up from sleep mode by pushing buttons. This is characteristic of all Bluetooth keyboards. Had I known this I wouldn't have bought it. Seems to be substantially built. Have a wireless mouse hooked up to a dongle that will wake from sleep. Had a wireless keyboard with a dongle that booted up to F12.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Much better than the cheaper model. Just add the equalizer APO and the peace interface which are free downloads and you are good to go! The sound can be adjusted to almost any configuration you would ever want it to. It can be turned on or off by just touching the round object that sits on your desk. This would be very unlikely to break like a traditional knob. It also retains the volume you last listened too. TV input works fine too.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Can these speakers be used laying on their sides? I have a shelf of limited height above my monitor that I would like to place them on.

I don't see why not. Just put some self adhesive felt under the side you want them to lie on. They have rubber legs underneath and were not designed to lie on their side. I don't see why it would hurt them.

What powers the speakers?

They don't rate the power. Supposedly the power levels are misleading in terms of describing the quality of sound. If you are concerned about the amount of electricity they use it is minuscule. They connect using a plug in voltage adapter and use very little electricity.

What is the difference between this and the $89 Bose Companion 2 Series III speaker in terms of sound quality?

These are much better. I returned the Series III speakers. They are just OK. If you spend a little bit more you won't have to ever buy them again, so it is a good long term investment.
