Once you figure out what is going on, this is a really excellent scanner and works flawlessly. My only issue is the instructions which are particularly opaque. Once you figure it out you will be very pleased with the results.

Great cover for the OONI Koda 16 oven. The oven is an unusual shape so getting something to fit over it is a challenge. This is a bit pricey for what it is - but it works well.

Can this be used for daguerreotypes or other behind-the-surface photos? Or is the focal plane limited to the surface of the platen?
No, this is essentially a document scanner with some nice templates and automation to allow for registration for easy scanning of slides , negatives, and prints. It might be worth a try but I would say that even if it did work, it would not be an optimal device for these kinds of prints.
