The application needs to run for longer than 8 hours, continuous, so it needs to be able to be charged from a separate port from the USB.
The USB port is not used to charge the Surface. It has a separate proprietary port for charging the device. If you need additional USB ports, you can always purchase a USB hub to expand it.
