so far so good

These are seemingly the zillionth pair of earbuds I have bought for my son.
None of them seems to last. These have been durable for almost a month now, and that's saying something. We've had good luck with Sony buds in the past.
The extra five bucks I paid over the ultra-cheapies seems like a good investment.

Perfect little smart phone
on December 25, 2012

Age:55-64
Phone size:Just right
This is my first smart phone, and so far I am dazzled by it.
My son recently got the Galaxy Skyrocket thru ATT, and I thought it was just a bit too large for my liking. CNET loved the Exhilarate, so I took advantage of my available upgrade and picked it up from BB. The alternative was the Pantech Burst; they are very comparable.
The Exhilarate is compact, has a nice, solid feel, and fits well in my pocket. It has all the features you'd expect in an "entry level" smart phone, whatever that means. The touch screen is responsive, the colors bright and vivid, and the call quality is quite good. Videos play beautifully. Text is easy to read.
It seems to me, so far at least #I've had it less than a week# that battery life could be better, but the jury's still out. There are battery-saving settings that I haven't fully explored. I haven't done much with the still camera, and haven't shot any video yet.
I did upgrade the firmware to Ice Cream Sandwich, a process that went very smoothly. I also added a micro card and have plenty of storage.
I'm still playing with various functions and downloading apps but, on the whole, this is a remarkable little piece of technology.
What's great about it: Size, call quality, features, screen
What's not so great: battery life seems a tad short
I would recommend this to a friend!

great price for name brand

My bigger Sharp only lasted 14 years! What a piece of junk!
Just kidding, of course. That beast had been used untold thousands of times, so when it finally pooped out, I went for another Sharp. For $90 on sale, you can't beat this guy. Great packaging, easy to set up, bla bla bla.
Only quibbles are (as someone else said) that I wish the light went on when you opened the door. And the tray is a tad harder to get set correctly than in my older model. But the rotating tray is the huge selling factor here. Can't live without it.
Also, I like the glossy black look, although I know it will get fingerprint-y.
In all, I can't imagine a better product at this price.
What's great about it: price and carousel
What's not so great: doesn't light when you open the door
I would recommend this to a friend!

worth a try

This is a worthwhile product that is a bit less than perfect.
The quick set-up instructions, and the additional help online during set-up, are first-rate. They volunteered to program it for me at the store, but I figured there would be no way to test it there, so I did it myself.
To my delight, each of my components was in the Harmony database, and once I fixed a couple of self-induced mistakes, all was OK.
To make a long story short, the thing does what it's supposed to do -- most of the time, but not all. I find myself having to use the "help" button more than I'd like in order to get components on and off. Maybe it's my aim; I haven't had it long enough to be sure. That being said, you can always do what you want when you use help.
One kind of nagging thing is that my beloved son has declined to learn how to use the Harmony and, as a result, he will still turn things on willy nilly, either manually or with the "old" remotes. As a result, Harmony gets confused. You MUST use this device to perform all-encompassing "activities," or you will be back to controlling things individually/manually (and you can do that with the Harmony, albeit with some clicks).
On the whole, I like this thing, despite its shortcomings, and personally would not go back.
What's great about it: look and feel, online setup
What's not so great: doesn't work all the time; buttons could be bigger
I would recommend this to a friend!

Best bargain TV?
on May 9, 2012

This is a bedroom TV for my video-gamer son. As such, I am delighted with it. We have a big Sony downstairs, and I didn't expect the Insignia to match the Bravia's picture. You shouldn't either. It's a budget TV, but a very good performer for what it purports to be. It plays the games without lag, which is what we needed. Also no motion blur in sports. The sound is decent.
Setting it up was incredibly easy; we had it running in about 15 minutes. The HDTV picture is nice and bright and detailed, a stark contrast to the huge old CRT we lugged out to make room for it. Maybe not the best picture, but certainly good.
I think Insignia is an excellent "off" brand, perhaps the best. One thing I learned, and you should look out for. The newer models not only don't carry the two-year warranty any longer, but the Black Tie is more expensive for the newer ones. That's why we settled on this set instead of the newer 40-incher.
What's great about it: Price
What's not so great: Very little

Are subscriptions required?

Do the apps that get internet content require subscriptions?

I'm guessing NetFlix - yes?
YouTube - no?
you're correct on both examples. there are a few freebies with the other apps (but nothing much to speak of).

TV Wobbly

I assembled the TV and it seems very unsecure on the stand. It is very wobbly. Has anyone else had this issue? This is my 2nd 55" Vizio and I do not have this problem with my other one.
it is a bit wobbly. make sure you tighten all the screws. I simply never touch mine; I don't fear that it's going to fall over or anything.
