Good sound and value
on June 12, 2019

Construction / Comfort
Built with no nonsense and with a price in mind. Construction is all black plastic.
The headband is on the rigid side with no padding. Regardless it feels comfortable, and the headphones fold flat.
The headphones themselves are rather large, and a bit on the heavy side.
The padding works very well, and provides good passive noise isolation.
Specs / Controls
On the specs side, it's Bluetooth 4.1 and SBC codec. The downside is that doesn't support more advanced audio codec like Apt-X or AAC.
The battery life on these is fantastic. It's rated for 17 hours. I've been using it at work for several days and the battery indicator on the phone still shows around 80% on the headphones.
It charges with Micro-USB (Cable included). Note that there is no analog input and doesn't work while being charged.
The controls are simple and logical, on the back side of the rear headphone there is a volume rocker, that is also used to change tracks if held, a play/pause/call and the Power/Pairing/Bass button.
Audio
Specs aside, these sound great, specially at the value they offer. The sound is very clear, detailed and neutral. The extra bass settings provides additional body, but not overwhelming, working well on different types of music.
Conclusion
As value over the ear headphones, sound is very good, as expected from reliable JVC.
These are a very solid choice.

New user experience
on June 5, 2019

Having used mobile VR adapters before, this is a leap forward.
Setup (Simple):
Oculus Rift S only works with Windows 10, with higher end video cards. Won't work unless the computer has discrete video from Nvidia or AMD with a DisplayPort.
Also needs a single USB 3.0
The remote controllers pair wirelessly with the head unit, and no additional connections are needed on the PC. As seen from the pictures, the controllers have a ring to help against smashing your hands on a wall.
While the headset has some weight, its halo band is very simple to adjust with a single knob on the back and a single Velcro band on top.
The headset has cameras around the eye mask to help know where one is in a room without having to install additional (beacons) around the room like on other models.
With a single cable connecting to the PC this is as simple as it's going to get with a wired headset.
It can be worn with glasses, which fit comfortably inside the headset.
Image (Good enough):
The image is very clear with a single high-resolution display behind specialized optics. First time I used it, noticed the left and right views didn't look aligned, so there are some adjustments for the distance between eyes, but it's in software, since the headset has a single large display.
Sound (Works):
It comes from the halo, and it doesn't cover the ears. I found the sound to be fine, and there is a headphone plug on one side of the headset, if one prefers to wear earplugs.
Overall, PC-Based headsets provide better graphics, and have more games than mobile based headsets. Besides the Oculus store, it can run games from Steam.

Well designed and well made

After going through different mounts for years, I find the 'Air Vent' mounts work better for me. The phone is where I need it, without obstructing the view, and it works in all our cars.
The mount comes with two plates and an optional protecting film.
Use the big plate, which is not painted, on phones that don't have wireless charging, between the phone and the case.
Use the smaller plate on phones that have wireless charging. It's painted black.
The protective film is useful on phones with glass back covers.
The front of the mount has rubber, and the clips that go into the mount are hard plastic with a rubberized coating. Once pushed into the mount, the mount has a tightening ring.
It sits tight and does not move. It does not leave any marks in the car nor the phone.
The magnets are strong. The phone remains in place. Bumps on the road don't move the phone. I'm using the larger metal plate with a thin plastic case.
I had iOttie mounts before in another car and they were made to last.

Good sound, comfortable, simple to use
on May 10, 2019
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
Brief:
Nice sound, Comfortable to wear.
The band is light and flexible: Holds charge all day long (9 hours of use), and vibrates on calls.
Waterproof.
Bluetooth 5.
There is no active noise cancelling. It does a great job at muting external sounds while wearing them.
Pros:
- Sound is pleasantly good. It has three EQ presets selectable by holding buttons on the band: balance, signature and more bass. The signature setting provides more 'body' to the sound without adding much bass. I personally prefer this setting, which provides clear sound and bass without being overwhelming.
- Bluetooth 5.0: More battery efficiency and longer range from the phone, if the phone supports Bluetooth 5.0, otherwise won't notice the difference.
- There is no app required to install, all the settings are done from the remote.
- The band vibrates when receiving a call.
- Waterproof.
Cons:
- Doesn't support AAC codec on iPhones. Also used it on Android but couldn't tell if it supports AptX
- It doesn't seem to turn off on its own. I have to remember to turn them off when not using them
Fitting:
- The band is lightweight. It might be a bit too flexible, but works for me, and stays in place. The earbuds come with three tip sizes, and it has two settings for how far the tip goes in. Overall very comfortable.
- Having a band, the earphones don't just fall off to the floor, and the battery life is better than other wireless earphones.
- The earbuds have magnets so they stay together when not in use. Very practical.
Charge: Through Micro-USB. A short cable is included.
In all, very pleased with these, and sounds as good as higher priced ones

Sleek, Wireless, Fully Automatic
on April 11, 2019
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
Brief
This is a solid choice for an un-complicated consumer grade turntable, which is fully automatic (One-button start and stop) and an integrated Bluetooth interface that works great, connecting automatically upon start.
Pros
- Minimalist design.
- Full-automatic operation: Three buttons up front: Cue List, start and stop. Inside the console, speed :33 1/3, 45 RPM, Size selector, and Bluetooth Control.
- Phono or Line output with gain control.
- USB audio output for converting to digital.
- Bluetooth listening.
Cons
- Belt Drive: Turntables can be either Belt-driven or direct-driven. Most consumer turntables are belt-driven, which produces stable speeds with less vibration, but the belts eventually wear out. It's very easy to replace with no tools by lifting the platter, but will need to find a replacement, fresh belt when the time comes.
- Bluetooth: It supports Bluetooth 4.2 with codecs SBC and Apt-X. It doesn't support AAC (which is used by Apple and others) and it also doesn't support Sony's own LDAC for high-definition Bluetooth audio, which is baffling considering the purpose of playing from a Turntable is to maintain audio fidelity. To be honest, the SBC codec is sufficient for playing with smaller speakers, but differences can be notable with headphones.
- Instead of providing RCA posts for audio output, it has permanently attached cable with RCA connectors. I have no idea why they would do that.
- The power supply is an external brick adapter. I find this very inconvenient.
- There is no lock on the arm, so if you need to move the turntable, the manual indicates the user needs to tie a string through the arm. Every turntable I used has a clip to lock the arm, except this one.
- The power button (standby) is on the back, which is the only way to turn it off completely.
- Likewise, the gain control is also on the back of the turntable. Gain settings can be adjusted when playing different records.
Observations
- Because it's a consumer turntable, it doesn't have strobe speed control. Not an issue for people that just wants to listen to music.
- The arm is very minimalistic. Very nice and lightweight. It works very well, but again, as a consumer turntable it doesn't provide weight adjustments.
Audio
- This is a proven mechanism that's very similar to previous Sony models, with a redesigned arm. The base of the plate is cast metal, which provides a stable foundation. The phono cartridge is Sony's MM type.
Comparative listening
Playing the same record: Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon, 2016 Remaster, which is a fine quality remaster in a heavy vinyl pressing, versus the 2003 CD, in my personal opinion, the LP produced warmer but detailed sounds. CD had more clarity but also more metallic sound. The turntable was able to produce the detailed background sounds this record is famous for.
Overall
While this is not, and does not pretend to be a pro-grade turntable, the overall design and appearance is very nice, with a fully-automatic mechanism to keep it a pleasant experience, and Bluetooth transmitter to make connecting the turntable as simple as possible, but there are obvious design flaws, although small, that would've been addressed in a better way.

Strong and Flexible - Rugged and stylish
on March 14, 2019
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
This premium cable is 6 ft. long, which is twice as long as standard cables.
It's built with a fabric sleeve, quite thick. Because of this is more rigid but I found it surprisingly flexible for this type of cable. Some cheaper 'reinforced' cables feel like wire, but not this. It's flexible and handles like thinner cables do.
The connectors are well built. The boot is rubbery and extends well into the cable, so less chance of frying at the ends. However the boots are not excessively thick so it works fine in most cases, although it is, as expected, thicker than Apple cables.
To pack the cable, it comes with a built-in real brown leather strap that attaches with a metal clip. It's both rugged and stylish (If that is a word ever used for a cable).

Excellent hardware, simple and effective software
on February 14, 2019
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
Got our first Velop nodes about two years ago, but because we have the main internet connection in the basement, we were using another standard router and connected the Velop via ethernet, in bridge mode.
With the MR8300, it can now be all integrated.
The router itself is somewhat hefty, with four external antennas, four LAN ports, the internet (Ethernet) port and USB 3.0. It also has a power switch.
While this can just as well work as a stand-alone Wi-Fi router, this can actually act as the central unit of a Velop mesh system. This is no ordinary router. It's a 3 band (two 5 GHz radios + one 2.4 GHz -- Linksys calls this Tri-Band AC2200).
Velop systems try very hard to make things as simple as possible. While the initial install can be done like a traditional router connecting a laptop to it, the best way is to install the Linksys app (iOS or Android), and go through the guided setup from the phone, which will initially use Bluetooth to set everything up. Once it's setup, Bluetooth is no longer used.
Because this is a mesh system, one of the 5 GHz radios is then dedicated to connect to other Velop nodes, when set up, so then the more nodes the more dense the mesh radio (more stable) and because the channel is dedicated for the mesh, it doesn't degrade the speed when connecting to other nodes.
Our internet is 100/100 and got full bandwidth from one of the two satellite units, so the mesh system works as promised.
When we got our first Velop systems two years ago, the software was very limited, but over time Linksys kept on updating it, improving the app, adding functionality.
The router itself is very simple, it even has one single light on top (which coincidentally is like any other Velop system) to provide status.
The phone app can control most settings either locally or optionally, remotely via the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi service (This is optional).
Entering the router from a desktop shows more detailed settings for most users. For advanced configuration mode, there is a somewhat hidden mode, clicking on the CA at the bottom left that enables setting most everything on the router, for someone who understands what they're doing. Otherwise the standard mode is great for keeping things simple.
This router can be set up as either stand-alone, part of a mesh router; in router mode (standard) or in bridge mode, when someone is stuck being forced to use a router provided by the cable company.
There is also Amazon Alexa integration to turn on or off guest networks, or read the access credentials. The Alexa skill is currently unpublished and Linksys promises it will expand it. I found it after some googling on a 3rd party skill listing, while Linksys is promoting that the Alexa skill is available.
Adding additional nodes is simpler using the phone app, because it will use Bluetooth with the phone to assist in initial pairing. Once a mesh node is set, everything is administered from the main node, so changing the Wi-Fi password in a single place sets the whole house. Additionally, blocking content to specific devices is done from the master node.

Good, clear sound, simple to use and reasonably pr
on December 16, 2018
Posted by: emiliosic

These 'true wireless' earbuds have a nice balanced sound and are very simple to use.
The sound is clean and balanced, with three pre-set EQ settings: balance, signature and more bass. The signature setting provides more 'body' to the sound without adding much bass.
The earbuds are fairly lightweight and remain comfortable in the ear. They come with three sizes eargel, and an optional ring around the earbuds, for bigger ears, so it fits tight. I didn't need to use these.
When the earbuds are taken off the case, they automatically turn on and they turn back off again in the case.
They support Bluetooth 5.0 so pairing with a newer phone (Like iPhone 8 or newer) will have better connection and longer battery life.
There is one button on each earpiece. Pressing either left or right changes the volume. Long press for next/prev. two clicks on the left for play/pause, and call control and phone assistant (Siri or Google) with two presses on the right. Three presses select one of the EQ settings. The earbuds will announce each EQ setting so there is no confusion.
Each earbud has a small light that's either blue or white depending on the status.
That's about it. There are no extra controls and there is no app to install on the phone. Doesn't get much simpler than this for this type of headphones.
The case is also very simple and practical. When the case is opened, three small lights indicate the charge level. There are magnets inside the case that keep the earbuds secured in charge position. The earbuds last between three and four hours per charge, and the case holds about three more charges. It has a very practical, albeit short USB charging cable built into the case, so no more lost cables. It charges from either a computer's standard USB connector or a standard USB charger.
Calls: There is a single microphone on the right earpiece and phone calls can only be heard from the right. So calls work but this is not what it's made for.
The earbuds are water resistant (Not submergible) but the case is not.
Overall, it's very simple to use, sensibly designed and the sound is excellent for this type of earbuds. For music, it sounds as good as more expensive ones.

Sleek Workhorse
on November 28, 2018
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
The Inspiron laptop line has been for years reliable workhorses for every day home/school use.
The line keeps improving and this late 2018 model has plenty of welcome changes.
The top and bottom covers are now made of aluminum and the housing is made of brushed metal, the screen is a seamless piece of glass. The touchpad is large, accepts multi-finger gestures and it's very responsive. Something odd is that the trackpad, instead of being a smooth surface, it's slightly rough. It seems that Dell chose to make it look nice with a metallic texture instead of providing a smooth surface expected in a trackpad. I don't see it as a big deal, but it's something I immediately noticed the first time I used it and every time I go back to it after using other laptops.
The screen is touchscreen and accepts active pens (not included), and has 360 degrees hinges that folds as a tablet. The system works well and the screen stays in place.
The keyboard has recessed island keys with good feedback, and good amount of travel for a laptop keyboard. The keys are lighted, with off/med/max settings. It does not have a number pad, which is actually something I prefer because the keys are centered instead of having to type on the left side because of the number pad that I'd rarely use.
On the left it has a round power plug, a small charge LED, an USB-C port that also has DisplayPort and charge the laptop, a full-size HDMI port that supports HDMI 2.0 (For 4K TVs), and audio jack. To the right there are two USB 3.1 ports and an SD card reader.
The screen is 1080x1920 (Full HD), and it's very clear to read or to watch videos (Cinema Display, with good blacks and contrast), and it's touchscreen, as it can be folded as a tablet.
Audio is OK for a laptop, comes from the sides on the bottom.
Something I noticed is that it's much simpler to service than other new laptops: The bottom shell can be easily removed with Philips screws. The battery can be replaced with some screws (No glued components) and there are two DDR4 memory slots (This model has 8 GB, so one slot is 8 GB and the other is empty). The SSD is NVMe and also removable.
There is also a slot for a 2.5" SATA drive (SSD or spinning disk), and it comes with the cable and everything else that's required to install one.
The CPU is an 8th gen i7, which is quite responsive while multitasking, and if you're looking for a laptop to keep for a few years, this is the type of CPU to consider.
The battery should last the whole day, although there's a lot of space inside dedicated to the empty drive slot.
The NVMe is noticeably fast. We have similar laptop, 2017 model with similar CPU, more RAM and a standard disk. This machine is already done booting and waiting for the login when the laptop with the standard disk is just starting to show the boot logo. The Laptop has a TPM (Encryption) module 2.0, so now Windows encrypts the hard drive by default, even with Windows Home.
The laptop has a web camera that is much smaller than previous models, and unlike previous Windows 10 laptops, doesn't support the Windows Hello login using the camera with face recognition. Instead, the power button is also a fingerprint sensor. It's recognized by Windows Hello (Windows 10 personalized login system).
In my opinion, the fingerprint sensor works more reliably and faster than face recognition cameras. It works much like a smartphone.
While the screen is nice, CPU and SSD are very fast, the video controller is an Intel 620, which is OK for videos and casual games (Other Inspirion models have discrete graphics while costing noticeably more). Also there is a single USB-C and doesn't support thunderbolt 3 accessories.
Also, while the laptop can be charged using an USB-C laptop charger, it comes with a round plug charger. Having an extra USB-C instead of the old dell charging connector would've been better.

Simple and Powerful
on November 23, 2018
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
This is a large air purifier for larger rooms. We're using this in our Master Bedroom.
The controls very are simple to operate, with a manual, auto and night modes, and a timer.
The auto mode regulates the speed based on the air quality, this is displayed in a large display in the front of the unit, which has numbers and a color ring (different colors indicating air quality).
There is also a night mode that runs at its lowest speed, ideal for bedside usage.
Filters: It has large an thick HEPA filter, a carbon filter of the same size, and a thin mesh covering the outer filter. Replacing the filters takes seconds and no tools. The unit has a filter replacement indicator for each filter.
The HEPA filter is for particulates, including allergens.
The carbon filter is for reducing ambient odors.
There is also a dust sensor on the side of the unit, that the manual indicates it should be cleaned every couple weeks, and oddly, has a screw cover.
The unit is well constructed. The air movement is provided by a 'squirrel cage' fan (similar to most HVAC units) powered by a digital motor (These are the most precise motors, also used by the latest high-end vacuums, etc.).
It also has a light sensor that turns off all the indicators, except the color ring, which is dimmed to a faint glow.
It's a thoughtfully designed machine.
Note that if the unit looses power it will remain off, so it won't work with smart switches, and has no remote controls.

If this works with Nest system will it work with Ecobee* system? I We decided against the Nest system due to the class action suits regarding house fires. I would love to add this to our home.

No, unlike the Echo, it does not integrate directly with Ecobee. It supports Samsung SmartThings, so that could be a way, or via IFTTT.com is another way of integrating with Ecobee, but not directly today.

Yes, it provides phone numbers like when searching on a computer. For example, asking it for the phone number of a local pizza place will provide the number along with some other information. It won't dial any phone though.

Does google home has an accesory for lock and unlock doors?

No, but look into integrating it with a Samsung SmartThings that can control locks and can be controlled by both Amazon Echo and Google Assistant. However be aware that it doesn't recognize who's talking so it will open the door to anyone that knows how to ask

The battery is not removable. You might want to consider replacing the hard drive for an SSD to extend the run time.

You should look at short throw projectors for these distances. Short throws are typically used in schools and classroom environments.
For example; best Buy carries the BenQ HT1085ST that is HD (1920x1080) and is short throw

Will BestBuy carry this projector once it is available? (I see the two higher end models listed as "Coming Soon").
