The best all-around fitness band for the money
on November 5, 2015
Posted by: bk22
I've owned several different fitness bands over the years, including much of the earlier Fitbit line of products. Last year, I purchased the vivosmart tracker and have been a Garmin fan ever since.
The vivosmart HR has many improvements over the original vivosmart, most notably the heart rate monitor. But I find the design much better, as well. In addition to everything the vivosmart tracks, the vivosmart HR has the following:
--The screen is on all the time. There's no more tapping the band to get the time/date
--The screen is much much clearer, rather than the kind of foggy appearance of the vivosmart
--The HR tracks stairs climbed
--The HR tracks weekly intensity minutes
--The band shows the weather. Current temp, expected high/low temps and humidity are indicated, as well as a picture of what the weather looks like outside (e.g., cloudy, sunny, rainy, etc.)
And don't forget notification alerts, alarm, timer, find your phone, move notifications, decent battery life, sleep tracking, move bar and waterproof to 5 ATM. Garmin also recently updated the associated app that shows a ton of information in an eye-appealing form factor. Syncing to the app is also much faster with the HR.
If you're in the market for a fitness tracker that does it all and more for a very affordable price, check out the vivosmart HR.

Software needs work
on October 19, 2014
Posted by: bk22
I really want to like this device. It has everything you've wanted in a nice, clean package. But the software is buggy and needs some work.
--Battery life is poor. Garmin states that the battery will last up to 7 days; mine would last only one day. Additionally, I would set the sleep function with almost a full battery and it would die in the middle of the night.
--Mine would frequently lose the Bluetooth connection, and it was a huge pain reconnecting. The last time this happened, I finally gave up and returned the device.
On the plus side, Garmin tech support is outstanding. After I contacted them about the battery problem, they cordially offered to send me a replacement.
I truly hope they get the bugs worked out with the software. This device could be awesome, but right now it is not worth the hassle. Should my replacement turn out better, I'll update my review.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

can you answer your phone with this watch?

Yes. You can accept or reject calls from the band, but you still need your phone nearby if you plan on answering.

How accurate is it at counting actual steps?

I had a FitBit and it counted my arm movement as steps. When I would walk and not move my arms enough, it would say I was making no steps. Just curious how accurate it is.
It is pretty accurate; much more accurate than Fitbit. One of the reasons I got off the Fitbit train is because it wasn't very accurate at tracking steps. There were days where I would reach my step goal sitting at an award ceremony; the Fitbit would add steps every time I clapped.

When running, do you have to have your phone with you too?

In other words, does phone need to be in close proximity? Purchased a Pebble SmartWatch tonight at Target but it syncs with phone and you have to run with phone and watch. Trying to find a solution where the phone is not needed for running.
I've used it without having my phone on me. The band captures the data and you can sync it with your phone later. It also appears on the Garmin Connect web application.

How long does the battery last? How long to charge?

Fit bit hr only lasts 3 days and takes 4hours to charge. I did not want that.looking for one with a better battery life. My mom has the fit bit and isn't liking that either
Garmin says the battery life is up to five days. I've only owned mine for a little over two days, and the battery icon shows about 60% right now. I'm guessing I'll get about three to four days, but depending on how you use the various functions of the band, you may or may not get that amount. I use the notification feature and the weather function, which probably use more battery.

What is the accuracy for each feature (e.g. Heart rate, step, calorie, etc)?

What is the accuracy for each feature (e.g. Heart rate, step, calorie, etc)?
The heart rate feature is fairly new to me, but as far as I can tell, it's pretty accurate. Steps are pretty spot on; much better than many other trackers that give you steps for shaking your wrist, applauding, waving, etc.

Can you change the time to display seconds? If not, how hard is it to pull up stopwatch function?

The band does not display seconds. But to use the stopwatch function, you press the device key and touch the picture of the little running person. To stop, just press the device key. You than have the options of saving the data or trashing it.
