Super Headphones!
on August 1, 2022
Posted by: Cipher469
I have long been a Logitech fan for keyboards and mice. Until recently, the brand did not cross my mind for music. These new Zone Vibe 125 (ZV) headphones piqued my interest; and, as a result, Logitech is now on my music radar. These headphones are great, combining performance with comfort.
Wearing hearing aids, a comfortable fit is especially important. The first thing I did after removing the ZV from the box was to charge it. Before even considering the music, the next thing was to try them on. The ZV is noticeably light in weight, nicely cushioned and with an oval design providing a comfortable fit. After a few tweaks, I added the music. Listening for over an hour, I had almost forgotten that I was wearing headphones. Fit and comfort are necessary for a great listening experience.
Performance is much better than I have experienced from some headphones costing considerably more. The 40MM speaker drivers provide sound quality that is clean and clear, with amazing L/R channel separation. Hearing aids, of course, help me with quality of hearing, but wearing the ZV I am picking up very high notes that I haven’t heard wearing other brands. That has made for some “WOW” moments.
Pairing the ZV to Alexa and my mobile too only seconds for each. Power, pairing, volume controls and receiving/ending phone calls are quite simple. They are black-on-black and small (like most other brands), so it takes a little practice to get familiar. For mobile phone use, the noise-cancelling mic is in a flip-down position on the left earphone.
The ZV 125 provides amazing music reproduction at a very affordable price. What is not to like?! Being exceptionally pleased with mine, I highly recommend it to you!

Large Marshall Sound in a Very Small Package
on July 11, 2022
Posted by: Cipher469
Many of us of a certain age have memories of rock concerts and stacks of Marshall amps/speakers displayed on the stage. The Willen provides a Marshall musical experience in a speaker you can hold in your hand. Looking for a Bluetooth speaker with good portability, I selected to try the Willen based on its specs and on the Marshall name. There’s been no disappointment in the choice!
Getting the speaker ready for a musical long haul takes only the time needed to fully charge the battery. When ready, Bluetooth pairing was one of the quickest I have experienced. To allow me to have music outside on the deck, Willen is paired with an Alexa Show in my living room. It works great out there, with no sputter experienced on other brands I have used. In addition, from the same base, I have tried it upstairs and out in my garage. Still works great! In fact, I am hearing high treble tones in some of my music (Pink Floyd for one example) that I don’t think I have heard through other speakers, even with my hearing aids (too many concerts). When I got hearing aids, I rediscovered sounds I hadn’t heard in a long time. Now, the Willen is taking enjoyment of my music to even another level!
Aside from the great musical output, there are other likeable features to the Willen. For example:
*To control the speaker operation, there is a single toggle on the top. Power on/off, volume up/down, and forward/backward functions are all done easily. In addition, if connected to your phone, the toggle can be used answer/end/reject a call.
*The speaker is “weatherized” to protect it while outdoors from dust and water.
*If you want to create your own wall of sound, additional Willens can be stacked and synchronized to further magnify your listening pleasure.
*Along with great output, the Willen welcomes input. It can be used as a speaker phone. Also, having it paired with an Echo, I can control function via speaking to Alexa whether inside or out. Google users should have the same positive experience.
*Battery power that lasts. It is estimated to provide about 15 hours on a full charge, and I have not tried to disprove it. What I can say for certain is I have not yet had to even think of recharge after having it in use for varying periods over several days.
By now, you already know I love the Marshall Willen and I highly recommend it for your listening pleasure! If you want to go put on a big show, buy more and stack them!

Great output at the potential cost of time.
on July 5, 2022
Posted by: Cipher469
When I used to do a lot of photo printing, Canon Pixmas were my “go to” printers. I started with a print only model and, as needs changed, progressed over time to all-in-one models. They all produced fast, exacting, and beautiful prints. All other functions performed exceptionally well, too. Given that history, I had those same expectations for the new Pixma TR8620a.
SETUP: Getting the device functional and connected to wi-fi is easily done by following instructions on the touchscreen located on the front pullup panel. All functions can be managed using the screen. Given the screen size (2.5”x4.0”) and central front location, it can easily be read without being in the up position. Panel size is approx. 3.5” x 15” and extends across the device front and must be open to perform most functions. Caution: Jutting out as it does, there is a potential for damage to the screen panel and/or user. Also, with the panel up, it blocks view of the lower paper carrier and print output.
LOADING: There are two paper loading areas: lower front and upper rear of printer. Unless you have especially small fingers, pulling out the front cassette for loading can be a bit of a challenge. Also, there is minimal access clearance between the cassette and the desk/table the printer is sitting on. The rear area is where photo paper is loaded. It is much more visible, and access is much more convenient.
PRINTING: Output is excellent whether b&w or color! Ink is evenly distributed and dries quickly. This is important, especially for printing photos.
COPYING: Works well and produces excellent product! However, one specific needs to be known: While the Pixma does copy on both sides, it is not a true duplexer. Manual intervention is required to turn over the original and reinsert it for copying side two. When using the document feeder, there is a metallic buzzing sound emitted (reminds me of a dentist office) during the paper feed process.
SCANNING: Works well and produces excellent product! However, there is no automatic duplex scanning. That is the only real issue I have ever had with Pixmas, but I let photo print quality override it. Again, when using the document feeder, expect the same buzzing sound.
PRINTING/COPYING SPEED: For the first two days of trying out these functions, the printing and copying of documents/photos were both done at excruciatingly slow speeds. The range was from 1:05 to 1:45 minutes for b&w documents to over 5:00 minutes for color photo. The third day of usage operational speeds in all categories were very satisfactory. The fourth day, speeds were slow again but not as bad as the first two days. Bottom line, there is an inconsistency in output speeds for printing and copying from day to day. Again, if you are using the document feeder, expect the buzzing sound.
If you do not care about the buzzing and highly variable production speeds and just want excellent printed/copied/scanned outcomes, the TR8620a could be a smart choice for you. Otherwise, I would suggest trying a different Canon Pixma model.

Another Dell Winner
on June 20, 2022
Posted by: Cipher469
Dell turns out quality products, and this Inspiron 7620 is one of the latest. It looks great and works very well.
There are notable features, including but not limited to:
• Windows 11: With the latest OS from Microsoft on board, there is a bit of a learning curve. For example, how do I power on and power off. To power on the first time, check the insert that comes with the device. Once you have done that, you only need to open the laptop for automatic power up. To power off, look for the Windows icon located more to the lower middle, no longer in the lower left corner. There’s more to learn, but with a little patience, you should adapt to 11 just fine.
• 16” FHD touch screen with 1920 x 1200 WUXGA for great optics
• Processing and storage:
o Intel Core i5, 12th Gen. I usually go for i7, but trying out the latest i5, I was impressed. I have had as many as six screens going at one time, and nothing felt slow.
o 8 GB RAM (upgradeable to 32 GB; processing speeds up to 4.4 GH; 512 GB storage
• High speed interface support for external drives for data and HD video
• Flip and fold design provides options for usage: laptop, tablet, etc.
• Backlit keyboard
• Can support one external monitor without need for docking station.
• And for folks like me, Alexa is built-in!
The Inspiron 7620 is a winner in my view. It looks great, works great, and is comfortable to work with. I would have no problem recommending to a friend. In fact, I already have someone in mind.

Flawlessly connected, Fiercely protected. Austere is moving beyond the primary function of providing power, to a place where performance, safety, and design come together to define what you should expect in power. Using our PureFiltration technology, Austere Power cleans noise and artifacts, that can travel through power lines and keeps them from impacting your devices. In addition, the Omniport USB provides rapid charge and protection for low-voltage devices. Austere also employs flameless MOV circuits and thermal protected outlets, keeping you safe from a home electrical fire. And if anything were to happen, our Component Guarantee promises to protect your equipment from damage, regardless of its value, whenever your devices are plugged into an Austere Power product. And because how it looks is as important as what it does, Austere’s proprietary aDesign philosophy elevates function through purposeful engineering and sleek design. Our surge protector power strips have a brushed aluminum housing, which creates an elegant way to power your home electronic devices. Always. Not all power is created equal. You may not know it, but your surge protectors can wear out over time. Joules–the protective layer of energy that defends your components–are finite. And when they are gone, it leaves your system completely unprotected from shock or surge. Traditional surge protectors only last a year or two so if you can’t remember when you last refreshed your home’s power, it’s likely time to do it now. And to take out the guesswork of when your Austere Power needs to be replaced, the blue protection shield icon on the Power unit will cease to illuminate once the Joules have been used. But that won’t happen for a long time because Austere Power is rated to last more than five times as long as most power products and guarantees to safeguard your system with our Component Guarantee.

Austere, yet not “austere”
on May 2, 2022
Posted by: Cipher469
from Spanish Fort, AL
Don’t let the name fool you, this device is anything but “austere.” In addition, it comes in an exhibition box which usually indicates something great inside. Open the box and find the best-looking surge protector/charging device you have ever seen. After the “wow” moment, you wonder if it performs as good as it looks. No worries.
Installation is quick and easy, plug it in and turn it on. You should then see three blue LED lights lit up on top of the device. These indicate Power, Ground, and Surge Protection are all at proper operating level. Next, you can connect as many as eleven devices: six charging outlets on the face and five USB (2 A’s and 3 C’s) ports on one end.
Other features of this exceptional device include:
• The compact design and low weight allow wall/or similar surface mounting.
• External EMI/RFI disturbance filtration to minimize interference from other devices.
• Power circuit protection to minimize danger of electrical fire.
• Six-foot armor covered power cord with “flat” 3-prong plug.
• A lifetime performance guarantee on the device plus a 5-year replacement guarantee for a device damaged while plugged into the charging center.
If I wanted to find a nit to pick to with this great charging center, it would be that the outlet placements aren’t friendly to the oversized plugs that come with some electronics today. However, for what it does offer, I’m good! Run, don’t walk, and get one (or more) for yourself!

Mattress in a box: Magic or Science?
on February 15, 2022
Posted by: Cipher469
from Spanish Fort, AL
The idea of a mattress coming rolled up in a box seemed strange to me when they first came on the market. I presumed they couldn’t be comfortable or sturdy. Flash forward to today. Was I incorrect? Oh, yes!
Wanting a new mattress for my guest bedroom and having the opportunity to try out one in a box, I went for the Serta Sheep Retreat. Trying it for several nights to ensure it was sturdy and comfortable, I was very pleasantly surprised!
Before removing the mattress from its cocoon plastic wrap, I had my doubts as to it being Queen sized and as thick as advertised. After wrestling the package onto the bed, I carefully started snipping the wrap. Once the snipping was underway, the almost flattened mattress started to rise. In what seemed less than a minute, I had a full grown 10” Queen mattress. Magic or Science? Whichever or both, it blew me away. Then, after sleeping several nights on it, if I didn’t already have a great hybrid (Serta!) on my adjustable bed, I would have kept this one for myself. I have lower back issues, and this mattress caused me no problem. After I reacclimating myself to sleeping on a flat surface, I slept very well.
This Serta Sheep Retreat is an excellent choice in mattresses! Magic or Science, you decide. Either way, a comfortable night’s sleep can be yours to enjoy. Yes, I would recommend it!

A Good Choice
on February 4, 2022
Posted by: Cipher469
from Spanish Fort, AL
This is a cute and mostly a well-functioning clock with the added plus of Alexa built in. Setup is quick and easy, almost completely plug and play. With Alexa already there, it pretty much is ready to go quickly after it’s powered on. The only thing I had to do was to use the Alexa app to correct the time zone.
The clock numerals are white on a black background and large enough to be seen at a reasonable distance. Other features on the screen are the day, a small current weather icon, and a microphone off icon. There is also one called “Temperature/Volume (dB) display.” That could be a nice feature; however, all it does is show numbers constantly changing. Should you increase or decrease volume, the constantly changing numbers show higher or lower groupings. I find that very annoying and waste of power, all be it small. To turn off this chain of numbers, the microphone must be turned off. That, of course, turns off the ability to speak to Alexa.
Try as I may to follow the directions to set an alarm, I have not been successful. No worries, an alarm can be set by simply asking Alexa to do so, my preferred choice anyway.
Listening to music is an OK experience. Sound quality is not what you will get from most Echo devices, though all things considered, it is rather good.
Aside from the “Temperature/Volume (dB) display” issue, this Lenovo Smart Clock is a genuinely nice product. With that caveat, I would recommend it to a friend.

Remove plaque and experience a deep, effective clean with Sonicare technology, removing up to 7x more plaque vs. a manual toothbrush. Sonicare technology gently pulses water between your teeth, for a month's worth of manual brushing in just 2 minutes. The QuadPacer lets you know when you've spent the optimal amount of time on each section of your mouth while the SmarTimer signals when your 2 minutes is up. The pressure sensor flashes red to remind you to ease off, helping to prevent gum recession, while the 2 intensity settings ensure a comfortable clean that’s right for you. Going electric might feel like a big step, but with this brush you’re in safe hands. Its slim ergonomic design and familiar-shaped head gives you everything you need for an effective clean. The kit includes 1 Philips Sonicare 4100 electric toothbrush, 1 Optimal Plaque Control (C2) brush head and 1 USB charger (wall adaptor not included).

Very Good Toothbrush
on January 14, 2022
Posted by: Cipher469
from Spanish Fort, AL
I have used electric toothbrushes for years and have been well pleased. Needing a new one, I decided on this one because Philips is a brand I trust for product quality and reasonable pricing. With minor exceptions, I am well pleased with the Model 4100 (HX3681/23).
Out of the box, the brush has enough charge to be used right away. However, as with most rechargeable devices, a full charge is recommended for long running. Projected time on a full charge is 14 days, which is excellent. The brush has two intensity settings. For first timers using an electric brush, it is recommended that the lower intensity be used initially so you can get acclimated to the brush. Though I am a long timer with electric brushing, I still prefer the lower intensity. Not only does it provide a comfortable brushing experience, it is also perfect for massaging the gums and cleaning the tongue. Clean gums and tongue are an important part of promoting good dental health. Very importantly, don’t forget to floss!
In addition to an excellent brushing experience, there are other nice features of the 4100 (Details in accompanying manual):
*A pressure sensor to alert you when you are pushing too hard.
*Dentists recommend two minutes minimum for effective brushing. This brush has a built-in “SmarTimer” to alert you at the two-minute mark.
*To help maximize your two-minute experience, the built-in “QuadPacer” function is an interval timer. A “map” of your teeth divides them into quadrants (upper front and back, lower front and back). If you brush according to the “map,” there will be a beep at the end of 30 seconds for each of the quadrants. If that is too high tech, no worries, the brush is still going to be your teeth’s friend.
The days of getting multiple brushing heads with a toothbrush seem to be history. The 4100 comes with only one head; however, if you register your device, Philips will send you spare head for free, as well as extend the 2-year warranty.
I love the performance of this toothbrush. That said, there are a couple of things that irk me. These are why I did not post a 5-Star rating.
*The charger works great. I do have a problem with the exceedingly small charging stand for a tall toothbrush. If you bump the standing toothbrush, it falls over easier than it would with a little more stability.
*The charging cable comes only with USB connectivity. No adapter is provided. Though I have lots of adapters, many people may not. In addition, they just might resent having to make another purchase to able to brush without plugging into a computer or other USB power source.
*With small brushing heads, no matter how good they are, keeping toothpaste on it when moving it to the mouth can be a challenge. To “lock” it on, squish the toothpaste down a bit into the brush.
The irksome items aside, the operating performance of this 4100 is great and worthy of recommendation.

Very good monitor at very good price
on December 10, 2021
Posted by: Cipher469
from Spanish Fort, AL
The Element brand is new to me, but the Element 27” appeared to be an excellent value if it worked well. Turns out, it is.
The monitor is frameless, per se; however, screen images do not project all the way to the edges. As a result, the monitor appears to have a frame. Just an observation, not a negative issue.
Out of the box, the only physical set up is to install the stand. This is a small task, with one slightly annoying step: getting four tiny screws into four tiny, recessed holes. That combo can result in a screw falling into the part you are trying to install. If that happens, good luck getting it back out. Mine is now set up with three screws, because the one that fell into the black hole refused to come out. Thankfully, three screws are securely holding the stand to the monitor. Once the stand is attached, it is easily adjustable for up/down tilt.
The 27” 1080p FHD monitor screen resolution and color depiction make for excellent viewing. Manual adjustments can be made, but I am happy with it as it is. Adjustments, on/off, and more are done via a single multi-function button on the rear. You’ll want to read the included manual because there is definitely a learning curve to making adjustments without undoing a setting with which you are OK.
An HDMI cable is included in the package. Its length is fine for connecting to a computer nearby. If you are going low tech, there is a VGA port, but you’ll need to provide the cable. A note on this. Using the HDMI cable, you may find your audio is transferred to Monitor 2. If so, you will need to do some tweaking.
For someone wanting particularly good monitor at a very reasonable price, the Element 27” should serve you well. If you are into heavy gaming, it might not be fast enough for you. Otherwise, it is a fine choice.

Anker Doesn't Disappoint
on November 27, 2021
Posted by: Cipher469
from Spanish Fort, AL
I confess to being a fan of Anker products, having several types in active service. All but one of my current plugs are standard USB. So, for charging phone, laptop, tablets, etc., the cables are USB to USB-C. That’s been OK but in updating some of my devices, I also want to update my charging capabilities. So, from my experience with Anker, I turned to them again.
The Powerport III, in addition to looking good, performs like a champion. This duo plug offers 40W (2 x 20W) of charging power. Anker says it works 3x faster than original chargers. I cannot attest to that exact number; however, I can attest to it working a heck of a lot faster than what I have been experiencing. It saves me time, and that’s great in my book. While kicking out charging power to one or two devices at the time, it also provides overload protection for your devices and peace of mind for you.
Would I recommend to a friend? My answer is: I am so pleased with the plug that I decided to upgrade my charging cables. New up-to-date cables are now on order, and the brand is Anker.

It doesn't show on screen, but the steady blue light on the device is an indicator. The best and easiest way to know is when you hear the TV audio coming through your headphones.
