Nice monitor, thin in some places, NO VESA
on March 12, 2024
Posted by: dronedad
I fail to understand... why in 2024 I have to upgrade to an enterprise monitor from HP if I want to get something that both looks good, is thing, has a thin bezel AND can be mounted on an arm. HP includes a weighted base for this monitor with toolless hardware, this is great. Unfortunately the range of height for the adjustable base is less than you might normally want to raise it to, and that leaves me wanting. The lack of VESA mounting holes, and the need for a proprietary bracket, that is not centered on the monitor means that even if I were to spend the extra cash to mount this to one of my existing monitor arms, I won't be able to rotate it, and adjustments will be awkward due to the off center nature of the mounting points. I do appreciate the connectivity with 2 HDMI ports, physical buttons hidden in the bottom of the monitor. This one uses a wall wart style power adapter, but I suppose that's the cost of that thin thin monitor. The minimal bezel is very attractive. The refresh rates are very good, and the brightness with the "mattte" screen finish is also very nice. The nonstandard mounting options kill it for me, and the price jump to a comparable Z series is ridiculous

Easy install, feels ZIPPY
on February 22, 2024
Posted by: dronedad
I’m not sure if it’s just placebo or not, but the same installation that was cloned to this SSD feels faster. The installation was quick and easy. I love how M.2 go in, versus SATA drives. The included downloadable software worked well for formatting and working with the drive and I was up and running in no time. I should probably benchmark it so I can substantiate the feeling that it is faster. As my primary drive for the operating system in this laptop, it is working well. I DO wish that products like this didn’t come in a blister pack, because I feel like I’m going to break whatever is inside the plastic while I’m trying to get it opened… and this drive is small and light enough that that’s maybe possible. One screw installation is quick and easy. I think the only thing you could even potentially mess up is the placement of the pins, and those have to be seated to install the screw. Overall this is a very quick and reliable drive. I recommend it to anyone seeking to expand their storage and needs speedy read / write performance.

Great small form factor black & white laser
on January 24, 2024
Posted by: dronedad
This is a great desktop / small foot print black and white laser printer. At 36 pages per minute this sucker is QUITE speedy. All the expected connection options are there - multiple bands of wifi, ethernet, and USB. The paper tray is generous enough for small business use, handling a ream of paper at a time, and also offering a manual feed for printing things like labels, stickers, or envelopes is quite nice when there isn't a 2nd tray. I tried the brother print app from my iPhone and was easily able to find it on my network and print to it with no issues. I find the "print from anywhere" features to sometimes be unnecessary, but it is still an option for you here. Also following in the footsteps of subscription based inkjet printers, this new offering from Brother is eligible for their toner subscription service, and includes a free trial. I'm unsure of when I'll run out of toner, probably not any time soon with my casual home/home office use, but it's still nice to know it's there and the printer can communicate directly with the vendor, and the result is that you get a discount on supplies. Print quality is excellent, and what i expect from a black and white laser printer in 2023. Overall this little workhorse is perfectly at home in your home or small business where you don't want to sacrifice speed or 2-sided for small footprint.

Good quality watch that flies under the radar
on December 17, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
This watch is obvious in trying to do something different and I think they accomplished it. The "light" version of Withing's smartwatch is a quality time piece that integrates the smartwatch functions. The watch itself is very well made and the band is high quality. The gorilla glass face resists scratches and is easier to keep clean. The smart portion of the display is controlled by the Withings app on your phone. This experience is a little bit clunky and not as user friendly as it could be. This is exacerbated by the cramped display and their attempts to show as much info as possible on that small ish screen. It's possible to wear this watch and have noone know that you're wearing a smart watch. I read some online comments criticizing the accuracy of some of the health tracking features, but this seems to be where Withings shines on other products. I didn't have that same experience but I was definitely on the lookout for it. The few features that are missing from their flagship scanwatch didn't seem to be terribly missed. Overall this is well made and I would recommend it to anyone that is offended by an apple watch.

Canon quality and connectivity, focused on video
on December 16, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
All of the tik tok and vlogger tools are front and center features on this canon video centric camera. As someone who has used canon cameras for years and taken quite a bit of video on them in various formats, I welcome this new form factor. The built in stand, focus on connectivity, and flip around screen are all direct answers to problems experienced trying to use a nicer point-and-shoot or DSLR to record video. Right off the bat I was surprised that this camera seems to come kind of bare bones. No built in memory and no included memory card. Also no case, even a cheesy thin one. I had to cycle through my memory cards as this camera requires a minimum size, but it didn’t tell me that on the screen, it just kept insisting there was no card inserted, making me think there was something wrong. Canon really anticipated some of the video centric uses of this camera, and the ability to plug in an RTMP server has been coming in VERY handy when I want to use it to stream kids sports, and it has better resolution and usability than my phone can provide. Overall this is a foray into new territory and I don’t think Canon got it wrong, as they are blazing new ground. I am anticipating others to follow suit. This camera feels well
Made and is the usual canon mix of metal body and heavier plastics. All doors/covers fit with solid positive feel. The removable battery gives options for swapping and the usb C and mini HDMI ports let you use this camera in a variety of scenarios.

Homage to OG Polaroid, adds tech where it helps
on November 13, 2023

The Polaroid Now Gen 2 is a step up and an improvement on this icon of photograhy history. While Outkast might not be penning odes to this particular camera, it has an interesting set of features that combines the nostalgic with the modern. Built in flash with a battery? Yes Please. Accurate ticker for how many photos are left on the cartridge, as well as indicators for double exposure and a self timer mode? More yes please! While I've not kept up on the saga that is/was the return of rights to produce polaroid film and then the subsequent reinvigoration of this medium, it appears that the Now Gen 2 can shoot with all the types of Polaroid instant film that is on the market today. The other colors are cheeky and kind of fun, but the black and white is the flagship of them all. Still light and portable, I DO wish that the standard kit came with some kind of a case, as the portions of the design that they have chosen to mimic result in angles and weird protrusions that seem prone to breakage should this camera go swinging accidentally. It does take up a decent amount of space for what seems like kind of a novelty, I'm not totally sure why I would put it in my bag, unless I was intending to shoot on these for a specific effect or for fun. Man is sure is fun to play with though.

Handily the best looking lock on the market
on November 13, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
The Level Lock+ seemed like an eventuality. After all, they were going to figure out at some point that they could hide parts of the lock in places. Who knew the battery would work well in the deadbolt though? Level did. I'll start by saying that this lock requires some precision. That rattly door at the cabin that you have to push on with your knee while you work the deadbolt? That's not the one you want to install the Level Lock+ on. Because of the lower power being provided by a CR2 battery, the level lock seems to have a little less locking/unlocking/deadbolt power that other locks. In my past experience with other locks, there is only one other company that had more consistent locks/unlocks with less failures, and those guys (Yale) don't make ANYTHING this small. If you're into the idea of a smart home, but the aesthetics are still important to you, then the Level Lock+ is the only thing on the market as far as that's concerned. While there are a few issues that I would expect from a company/product that is just blowing up, like some minor picking/security issues and the occasional missed locking cycle, I've decided I can live with it. The Connect and Keypad are both attempts to bring some of the features that others have noted were missing from the first versions of the Lock+ but giving you the ability to have codes instead of NFC keys, and also allowing you to remotely lock/unlock or "monitor" over the internet via wifi. I say "monitor" because the Lock+ doesn't have a door sensor, so it could be registering as locked, and be swinging in the wind. I'm hoping this is remedied in the future along with Matter compatibility, which I believe they're headed towards and hopefully it's all software upgrades instead of hardware ones.

Ready for WiFi 7? Linksys setup needs a refresh
on October 17, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
As an owner of a previous generation of Linksys, Velop, I find their mesh systems to be very reliable once they are up and running correctly. Man, does it take a while to get there sometimes. Even if you have managed to discover the advanced mode that appears to be on documented in the router set up itself, the set up app leaves a ton to be desired. I find myself, as I am setting up these mesh routers, constantly wanting to be able to tell it how to handle nodes, and have it suggest their placement, but that doesn’t exist. In fact, the set up app truly is an easy button, but not for anyone with a highly technical or mixed set up, who these features and the first round of wifi7 is directed at. The Velop being able to handle wired backhaul is one of its strengths in my mind, since I have ethernet cable run to a number of locations in my house already, and I don’t care to use it in full wireless mode. That does mean that I have no idea what the signal strength is and I think there are still some dead spots in my house, and I am unable to pinpoint them with the Linksys app or otherwise. In general, this new iteration of the Velop system is easy to set up and get up and running. I appreciate the number of ports built into each note, and the fact that this generation has a dedicated WAN node, as opposed to just four unlabeled ones. The Clean plastic architecture, white design of the Velop is still more attractive than other brands that look like cremation urns, even if it is not easy to hide. I await the release of a main hub style router like the Hydra to pair with this system. Speed tests with my WiFi 7 device confirmed blazing fast, but also I don’t have too many of those. You also find out real fast what older devices you have on your network when you start turning off mixed mode.

Super basic tank printer with good quality
on October 17, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
I struggled to prepare to write this review, knowing that the true test of this printer is going to be over time, and when the ink has sat for a moment before being used. This printer feels like the 2023 version of the printer they gave me with my first laptop purchase. Quite slow printing speeds and no double sided printing make the feature list pretty bare. Not much to write home about on that front. The color printing speed is slow enough to be obstructive if you are printing color on a daily basis. I find myself printing color so infrequently that I’m more worried about how the tanks are going to perform. With ink cartridges I knew I was getting a new print head. With this system I’m not sure if the print heads are replaceable, or if there is a method to make sure they’re not clogged. The tank idea is great and I love it. I think I need to figure out how to automate a printer test sheet every week or so, to make sure the printer gets exercised. Otherwise this printer has very good quality. There are lots of reasons however to pay a few more dollars and bump up to a model that can do photo printing, more paper in the tray, and double sided printing. This one is a perfect starter or basic model.

The Velox Mini is our most compact wireless air vent mount yet! Designed exclusively for MagSafe compatible iPhones and cases, the Velox Mini delivers up to 7.5W of power. Just tap your phone against the mount face and powerful magnets will hold it in place in perfect alignment. Easily install the Velox Mini by sliding the prongs onto your vehicle’s air vent blade, where silicone grips prevent it from slipping. A versatile ball joint allows you to adjust the cradle for an ideal and safe viewing position while you drive. A series of ventilation holes constructed around the mount help to dissipate heat and maintain airflow. Now it’s easier than ever to keep your phone powered up on the go.

Worked with all iPhone cases I tried on it
on October 17, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
I’ve observed some case manufacturers that seem to be okay with obstructing the MagSafe charger area with products that protect the camera lenses. This is more of a bad design choice on apple’s part, but I recently had to replace my first on the go MagSafe charger due to its large bulk not allowing the phone to lay flat and charge. The iOttie does not have that issue! I liked the mounting options, and after it’s fitted, it feels solid. The magnet is just okay, which I’m guessing means it matches the strength of the Apple factory magnet. I prefer chargers that hav stronger magnets, as the Apple factory one seems to be able to let loose on bumpy roads or bad potholes, which feels like a liability. The ball
Joint t allows you to adjust the position of the phone, but I also feel like it contributes to the unsteady feeling over time. Lastly, 7.5w charging bums me out. If you are taking a phone call and using Apple car play to navigate, 7.5w is not enough to keep my phone turned on, and I would prefer 15w. Overall this product is made decently, it just doesn’t have the right feature set for me.

iPod connector for 2005 Volvo XC90?

One of my collegues at work mentioned that he had Best Buy install an iPod adaptor to his 2004 Volvo XC90 (problematic for most of us owners as the radio user fiber optics, MOST system). I have a 2005 XC90, but the radios are the same. He had thought it ran him about $130 when he Best Buy did it a year or two ago. I have a local Best Buy that I can bring my car to and have this done as well, but I thought I would ask the question first of Best Buy online and understand what unit they offer for this connectivity and how it's installed. Please advise! I'd like to do this within a week... I miss having iPod connectivity!! Chris
The 2005 Volvo XC90 DOES NOT have an auxiliary input, nor can you add one without an accessory like the GROM MST. That's the only way to plug in an ipod or anything to an XC90

Display work or school presentations on this Epson projector. It produces 3200 lumens of white and color brightness for vivid images, and its easy setup lets you customize specifications in minimum time. This Epson projector is equipped with an HDMI port, so you can connect it to your computer or HD device.

how is the picture with this projector with daylight in the room?

3200 lumens is pretty bright. Epson would recommend you not have direct daylight for optimal use... I can tell you this projector works VERY well with direct overhead lighting, and it keeps up with sunlight okay. It's definitely not like the older deal breaker projectors that required the blinds closed.

Simplify your everyday life with the Google Home, a voice-activated speaker powered by the Google Assistant. Use voice commands to enjoy music, get answers from Google and manage everyday tasks. Google Home is compatible with Android and iOS operating systems, and can control compatible smart devices such as Chromecast or Nest."

I want to use HUE lights with this. Can I buy a 2nd Google Home for my 2nd floor so both floors can access Home to turn off/on lights? If my phone (synced to Home) is out of the house, will voice activation still work for the lights?

Google home will let you group and name the lights for each room. I don't believe they are intended to be used overlapping though. In fact you might confuse it with more than one connected to the same google account. The Google Home works without your phone at home, since it connects directly to the HUE account as well as the internet and wifi directly.
