Underwhelming and underperforming espresso machine
on January 28, 2022

from Roseville, CA
We have had the same espresso machine in our house for the past two years and decided it might be time for a refresh and upgrade since we use ours so often. We decided on the new GE Profile Semi-automatic Espresso machine because of the known brand name and Wi-Fi capabilities.
Unpacking and setting up the espresso machine was very simple with minimal reliance on the instruction manual, perhaps because we have had several espresso machines in the past. The GE Profile espresso machine has a modern, high-tech look with a gloss black finish on most of the machine and, when you turn the machine on, the flush touch panel buttons light up showing you when the machine is primed and ready for use. All you need to do now is add espresso beans in the top hopper, adjust the hopper to the type of grind you prefer (course or fine to change flavor between bitter and sour taste), pour water in the back container and you are ready to make espresso.
Having Wi-Fi functions built into the espresso machine allows you to connect to your home/office Wi-Fi system through the smart device application so you can monitor the machine’s status, report any issues regarding your device, etc. I did receive a few false alerts via app notifications after setup so perhaps there are some bugs to work out in the software or the device itself once it gets settled after use. After using the Wi-Fi functions and the GE application, I never really found any use for Wi-Fi in an espresso machine, or any coffee maker for that matter, and that’s coming from someone who’s entire house is connected and loaded with tech.
After a few test runs, I thought I was settled in with our new machine… and then the problems started shortly thereafter. I had made a few espresso drinks over the first couple of days, adjusting the grinds for a different taste, using the single and double shot options, and for hot and cold drinks. Keep in mind, I am very conscious about cleaning my machine after EVERY use, making sure the grind is dry before starting a new espresso and everything else it says to do in the manual. Within three days of use the machine showed signs that it did not have enough pressure to push hot water through a fine grind. I determined in order to avoid this from continuing to happen, I had to adjust the grind of the espresso on the turn dial at the base of the espresso bean hopper to a more course grind. After brewing a few fine grind espressos, the grinder backed up to where it stopped working altogether and the machine notified me there was an error. Therefore, I had to perform the troubleshooting steps in the instruction manual by taking the hopper and grinder apart to clear everything out using the provided cleaning tool/brush. However, using just the included tool was not enough to clear the grinder out so I had to use a screwdriver to clear out the rest of the compacted espresso from both the top and bottom of the grinder. After about an hour of figuring out what went haywire and manually cleaning the three-day old machine out, it was finally back in operating condition.
Besides the struggles I had with the problems that occurred during the first few days, the taste of the espresso itself really did fluctuate substantially when you adjusted the grind and I could just never get it quite right to my pleasing. After all was said and done, we ended up returning to our old faithful two-year-old espresso machine that never gave us any of these issues with the built-in grinder, not having enough pressure to push water through or never quite knowing whether I was going to end up with a sour or bitter pour of espresso. Unfortunately, because of the problems we had with the simple task of making espresso and the time and effort it took to troubleshoot the issues on a new product, we weren’t exactly pleased with the GE Profile Espresso Machine.

In collaboration with one of the best in the game and one of the best gaming peripheral companies in the market, Shroud and Logitech collaborated to design the new Logitech G303 Shroud Edition wireless optical gaming mouse; basically everything a gamer could ask for in a mouse.
The G303 features pro-grade LIGHTSPEED wireless technology with ultra-low latency combined with the 25K HERO sensor. Needless to say, it was clearly built for gamers for peak precision and speed. The one thing I noticed right out of the box was how extremely light it is at around 2 ounces. I assume this is due to the rechargeable battery in comparison to the battery powered mice I used in the past. It conveniently has a pull out mini door in the rear of the mouse to store the USB dongle when not in use. After a fairly quick charge with the included USB-C charging cable and plugging the USB dongle into my gaming rig, I was ready to take action and test this work of art out.
Although not necessary, it is recommended to download the Logitech G hub from their website to customize the mouse including button assignments, adjusting the DPI speed or assigning commands, macros and actions. It would have been cool to include some RGB options however I know that might have sacrificed performance, been a distraction or sucked up battery life.
Using this mouse on a FPS style game felt very smooth and responsive with precise targeting and fit perfectly in my hand size which I would say is about average. I would say it might be a little uncomfortable for someone with smaller hands, like a child, as the grip portion is quite large but that can help with hand or wrist fatigue. The five buttons feel smooth and are positioned perfectly in my hand. The material on the mouse is very smooth and glides easily around on my mousepad. There is even an option to purchase the compatible Logitech gaming mouse pad which pairs well with the G303.
I would strongly recommend considering this mouse if you're in the market for a top not mouse designed by some of the best in the business. It is easily the best and most comfortable mouse I have used with my current set up.

Hosting raging parties, practicing my karaoke, or rocking out with my guitar has never sounded better, and louder, thanks to the new Bose S1 Pro floor monitor speaker designed for just that. Well, it may be a stretch about the raging parties due to the pandemic and me getting too old for that but it’s still an incredible speaker. In any case, this thing was designed just for us audiophiles who love loud, clear, crisp sound even if you’re not entertaining.
Out of the box, the S1 was very easy to set up; simply plug it in with the included power cord, download and set up the speaker in the Bose+ app and you’re ready to rock out… or listen to smooth jazz via a Bluetooth connection and your smart device, plug in that acoustic guitar and a microphone for you entertainers, or basically this thing can handle whatever you throw at it. Having been a loyal and repeat customer of anything Bose, it is a simple set up and easy app to control even for those new to their products. I would like to see more options like syncing streaming services and EQ settings in the app similar to the Bose Music app but clearly that’s not what this speaker was designed for. The app does give you the option for Party Mode which you can connect multiple other compatible speakers to.
On the speaker itself, which has a convenient handle on top and was surprisingly lighter than other PA monitor speakers I have used in the past, you will find two combo-XLR inputs to connect your instrument and/or microphone. For those musician/singers, Bose uses dedicated ToneMatch processing and Auto EQ to ensure you and the speaker sound the best. There are gains for each of these inputs which let you adjust the reverb, bass, treble and volume. There is a smaller 3.5mm auxiliary input for any other audio devices such as smart phones or MP3 players with a headphone jack which also has a volume control. There is a dedicated line out to connect to other systems. The S1 has built in sensors that know how you have the speaker set up, whether straight up, on its side, elevated or tilted to ensure sound is being distributed appropriately. For those that would like to listen to music or perform where there may not be a power source, Bose added a rechargeable battery option to allow portability.
The Bose S1 Pro monitor speaker is a great option from one of the best names in the business. Offered at a reasonable price considering the specs, options and sound this speaker creates you won’t be disappointed.

Being told by my wife that I have somewhat of a lead foot, I have heavily relied on radar detectors for almost twenty years for commuting to work and leisure travel. I will say they have saved me countless times however I also have been pulled over and ticketed only a couple times over that span. I have also gone through my fair amount of radar detectors to always ensure I have the best chance of catching the fuzz using radar to clock my speed before they catch me.
The package includes what you would expect from any high-end radar detector including a carrying case, sturdy windshield suction cup style mount, and USB-C power cable which has a mute button on it in case where you mount the detector is too far to reach once installed. I could feel the quality built into the detector in comparison to other radar detectors I have owned over the years. Some of the features you’ll see in Radenso’s DS1 model that stand out from the competition is the bright, easy to see OLED screen which displays everything from the time, direction traveling and radar alerts. The speaker is loud and clear with push button adjustments and the radar alert sounds are actually quite pleasant in comparison to other manufacturers.
The new Radenso DS1 uses the latest technology to combat radar detectors including extreme long-range detection and GPS to not only notify users of radar alerts but to also minimize all those pesky false alerts. My last radar detector had long range detection and GPS however you had to manually add your own GPS location alerts for places Highway Patrol normally like to use radar. I could mark locations where you normally commute that set off false alerts but this became very frustrating after time. With Radenso’s DS1, they take care of most of this for you. Instead of having to manually add GPS locations during your normal commute to mute commercial areas that use radar for their automatic doors, the DS1 automatically recognizes these areas after passing them three times and automatically mutes them for you.
I have been very impressed so far by this radar detector, especially from a company that may not be as well-known as others that have been in the market for decades. For a small price, you can opt for Radenso’s extended two-year warranty which includes ticket protection which I chose to do and would recommend it. I would refer the Radenso’s DS1 to anyone in the market for a solid radar detector at a reasonable price considering the features that also has a customer support team in the US.

Razer comes in clutch again for laptop gamers with the new Razer Thunderbolt 4 dock built to add additional ports to your setup including the ability to hook up to two additional 4K 60Hz monitors or one 8K monitor using the four legacy Thunderbolt 4 ports and is also USB4 compliant. There is also a Gigabit Ethernet port in the event you want to hard line your internet connection and your laptop does not have a Ethernet port, a 3.5 mm audio combo jack, UHS-II SD card slot, and three USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports. Pretty much everything you need to complete a gamer's dream set-up. If you have older monitors without USB-C video inputs, you will need to purchase USB-C to HDMI adapters separately as the Razer Thunderbolt 4 dock package only includes the power block and one USB-C cable. As an added feature, and because it's a Razer product, they added the Razer Chroma color feature you can sync with your other Razer devices through their Razer Synapse software to control the colors and other features you would expect from them. Overall, this is a great dock for laptop gamers and would recommend it to anyone with high end gaming products to connect pretty much every peripheral you can imagine with today's technology.

DJI has established itself as the trend setter and continues to set the bar in the consumer drone market not only for avid photographers and drone pilots but opens the market up to more beginners and amateurs as well because of its new enhanced safety in-flight features. Fair warning for the beginners and amateurs, after flying the new Mavic 3, you may think you are an expert drone flyer, however, don’t go out flying a lesser drone after thinking you have mad drone flying skills. More than likely this is due to the upgrades to their flagship Mavic drone encompassing both the hardware and software. The combo package is a great investment for most considering it includes everything the base model comes with along with two additional batteries for no down time, eight additional blades in case of accidents, a pack of lens filters for the avid photographers and the perfect carrying case designed by DJI to fit everything snug and organized in a small backpack that protects your gear. Both the base model and the combo kit also include the Mavic 3 drone, a battery charger, one battery, a couple of extra blades and the standard controller for your compatible smart phone. I intentionally wanted to mention the compatible smart phone because the DJI Fly app was not available in the app store for my folding screen phone so ensure you do your research on phone compatibility.
The Mavic 3 drone itself is very similar in size to its predecessor and can be held in one hand when folded up or with the blades extended and weighs right at about two pounds. I immediately noticed the eight omnidirectional sensors around the drone that can sense objects and prevent the drone from crashing into something. This is a sigh of relief for beginner drone pilots after crashing drones in the past, although not nearly as pricey or well-made as the DJI Mavic drones. These sensors also help immensely when trying to navigate through tight spaces, open environments with trees, cities with obstacles, etc. The sensors also really come in handy when you are tracking someone or something in an action style video. The drone set up was fairly simple after charging the batteries for the drone and remote, downloading the DJI Fly app, and setting everything up through the app before you take flight. The DJI Fly app will walk you through the rest of the process including setting up your account through DJI, syncing the hardware and downloading any updates to the software (as expected with just about everything electronic today).
Regarding the photography details and probably the most impressive upgrade to the Mavic 3 compared to its predecessor is DJI incorporated a dual camera on the Mavic 3. Not only that, DJI collaborated with the Swedish made Hasselblad brand to design a camera specifically for their drone. The main Hasselblad camera is a professional grade 4/3 CMOS that captures beautiful, high resolution 20MP pictures with a new larger image sensor and dynamic range. This camera combined with the onboard software features Vision Detection Auto Focus technology with is very fast and responsive especially when trying to track stationary and moving subjects while the drone is also moving. Besides filming at an excellent 5.1K at 50fps or 4K at 120fps, I won’t get into any other video specs which are listed online as they are typically way too advanced for most, including myself. All I can tell you is the video looks incredible and smooth. The other smaller second tele camera lets you see the whole picture especially in open space before you decide what you would like to ultimately focus on. The tele camera is also great to view areas at a distance where the subject may not even realize a drone is in the area. The live feed to the host shows video at 1080p at 60 fps. One slight inadequacy on the standard Mavic 3 compared to the pricier Mavic 3 Cine is it only comes equipped with 8GB of internal, compared to the 1TB SSD on the pricier Cine model, however you can expand the storage using a micro-SD card. I would have included pictures in my review however you’ll find much better picture examples from the Mavic 3 camera online in stunning environments in comparison to my neighborhood park I initially tested it out in.
Some other improvements DJI made to the Mavic 3 compared to its predecessors are the flight time on a single battery that claim it will fly up to 46 minutes and up to 15 km away, both about a 30% increase compared to the previous Mavic drone. And when you get close to running out of battery, which I never got close to 46 minutes in one shot during my test flights, the drone will automatically return to your home point safely using the advanced auto-return function which calculates the best route back to the home point while avoiding obstacles and saving flight time. The return function also occurs when there is signal loss or can be initiated by the user.
Overall, DJI continues to impress and exceed all expectations with the improvements on the new Mavic 3 drone. In my opinion, the most impressive improvements were the omni-directional sensors, dual cameras that allow the user to see the whole picture, the collaboration with the high-end Swedish Hasselblad camera, the increase in flight time and distance the drone can travel. I would have liked to have seen more storage included on the base model considering the enormous gap between the base model and the Cine model, and a more improved remote that included a video display especially at this price point.

This is the perfect security system and add-on for those who already have, or are planning to acquire, a Ring doorbell or any other Ring products. The hardware was very easy to install, set up and sync to your existing Ring app through an existing wifi connection and no tools or professional installation required. I was able to set the whole system up under an hour which included the hardware and app set up. In order to get the most out of your security, you’ll want to think about where to add the door/window sensors as well as the motion detector alert before installing the hardware. Once everything is installed in your home or office, you’ll have to set it up using your Wi-Fi and connecting it all through the Ring app on your smart phone/tablet. I suggest placing the security keypad near the entry door where you regularly enter/exit your home/office for easy access to arm/disarm your system. The 4 entry point magnetic sensors should also be installed on easily accessible doors/windows you may think someone could easily break into and the motion sensor I would recommend installing in an area that traffic or motion could be detected to alert you of. It’s also very easy to add additional sensors to your system as well including cameras, security lights, sensors, etc. One of the other great benefits of this system is it has a built in eero Wi-Fi 6 router built into it that helps extend your Wi-Fi system up to 1500 sq ft which you can also add Wi-Fi extenders to. You can also add Ring power packs to the system to ensure the power for your system stays on in the event of a blackout.
If/when something is detected on one of your sensors, you will receive a push notification on your smart device and if you did opt for the Ring Protect Pro subscription, they could potentially contact you and/or the authorities to investigate. You can also opt into the Ring Protect Pro subscription which has 24/7 professional security monitoring however it is not a requirement.
This is a simple and reasonably priced security add on to your home/office with the option of not paying a monthly fee through an alarm company. I would recommend this security add on system to anyone who already has Ring products, or is planning on adding more Ring products, and looking to add or replace additional security.
Nest Cam with floodlight has built-in intelligence that can tell the difference between a person, a vehicle, and an animal. It alerts you when there~s important activity,* and lights up automatically so you can see what~s happening. With 24/7 live view and free event video history, you never miss a thing, day or night. Swap out your existing basic floodlight and use the same wires for power. Nest Cam with floodlight requires the Google Home app and a Google Account ~ it~s not compatible with the Nest app or the home.nest.com site.

The new Google Nest Cam with floodlight was designed to easily replace your pre-existing porch light or wired by an electrician in a new location. Being that I’m not an electrician, but have done small electrical upgrades and fixes in the past, I decided to replace one of our exterior porch lights on the side of our house to a flood light for night use and have the added option for video recording and notifications. We also just added a pool in our backyard and thought it would be a good idea to add more safety features with the person detection notification for our small children.
The smooth matte white (snow color) camera and floodlight are modern looking and something I would expect from Google after owning and using their products for years. There is not much to the packaging which is good for consumers who may be intimidated or skeptical about the install. Besides the lights and camera, also included in the package are the mounting plates, screws, ground wire, three wire connectors and instructions.
I don’t want to go too much into details regarding the installation since it’s easily explained not only in the paper instructions but also during initializing the camera in the Google Home smart phone app which is required for activation and installation. The app explains the install process step by step making it easy to follow; I didn’t realize this until after the floodlight and camera were already installed and powered on. The entire install process took less than 30 minutes; basically three wires to connect, a few screws to mount and secure the Nest Cam and setting it up via the app. It probably would have taken less time for an experienced electrician or DIYer with some experience.
The live and recorded images displayed in the app are very clear and the floodlight really lights up an area. Night vision on the camera works great and once the floodlights are activated by the built-in motion sensor the image changes to color. You can zoom in/out of live or paused video within the app. You can move the camera easily due to the magnetic connection to the floodlight and the lights are just as easy to swing different directions. One of the great things about this set up is if you lose wifi or power the camera will continue to record video using on board memory and will upload to the Google cloud once it gets a wifi connection again. However, without power the lights won’t work.
There are many options and features you can tinker with via the app such as setting activity zones, adjusting floodlight triggers, setting routines, etc. Syncing this camera to your Google account can also allow the optional Nest Aware subscription for Familiar Face detection, 60 days of event video history and 10 days of 24/7 continuous video history if you are looking for those features. If you don’t opt for the subscription, you can still view live video and 3-hour event history in the Google Home app.
Overall this is a great security camera and floodlight at this price point, was very easy and fast to install and would recommend it to anyone in this market, especially for those who may already have Google Nest products in their home or office.

Honestly, having the OOLER hydropower mattress pad has been one of the best sleep investments, if not the best, I have ever made. For someone who sleeps hot, and if anyone is in the market for this device probably can relate, I have never slept cooler and more sound in my life. I was skeptical at first considering I usually sleep on top of the covers wearing the least amount of clothing as possible to not wake up hot and uncomfortable. I also usually will sleep with a fan or humidifier on me to cool off as well. After I set this device up, you can immediately tell the difference in temperature, whether you set it to hot or cold.
I'll start off with the setup which was very simple with little to no reliability on the directions which were straightforward and simple. You simply install the mattress pad underneath the fitted sheet on your mattress and securing it to the mattress with the elastic bands, hook the hose up from the mattress pad to the control unit, fill the control unit with water, plug it in and download the app. After creating an account in the smart phone app, you will sync your device and can start customizing the settings such as temperature, setting a schedule for it to automatically turn on/off, as well as several other potentially useful settings. I opted for the half queen size mesh mattress pad on our king bed as it's the same length as a king bed and only takes up about a third of the bed instead of the full half of a king size bed which works perfect for our sleeping style. The mattress pad is also thin enough to wear you barely feel the transition from the pad to your mattress if you do roll off the side. The only way I can tell in the middle of the night if I do roll off is due to the dramatic temperature change. Mind you we have a "climate cool" mattress which does nothing compared to this water cooled mattress pad.
In my opinion, the best thing about this water cooled mattress pad is that it constantly circulates the waterflow so it will remain the same temperature through the night pulling heat from your body or heating your body depending on your preference. I have mine set to 61F on a schedule so when I get in bed it is super cold and I am able to fall asleep faster than I did previously.
As far as maintenance goes, it is also very simple as the instructions recommend draining the water monthly and filling with distilled water and doing a semi-annual system flush to clean the OOLER system and its attachment. The system has an integrated UV light that provides protection against bacteria in the water which can be turned on in the app only once a month. You can wash the Cool Mesh pad in a front-load washing machine with cold water on gentle cycle and tumble drying low.
I literally have nothing but good things to say about this system and would recommend it to anyone like me who sleeps hot at night and hates to have their sleep disrupted because of it.

This is the fourth air fryer my family has owned over the past several years and the second Bella Pro Series small kitchen appliance we have used as well. The last couple of air fryers we have used were quite heavy and large so the Sensio Bella Pro 5.3 QT was a welcome replacement compared to our older models. I didn’t hesitate with choosing the Bella Pro Series brand after using one of their last products and seeing how well made their products are in general; this 5.3 QT Air Fryer is no exception. Right out of the box you can see how sleek and stylish the air fryer is with the high gloss black and stainless-steel highlights. Once you plug it in, the top of the fryer illuminates with the menu options which is aesthetically contemporary. The touchscreen buttons are easy to use, the menu options are very simple to understand and select with a light touch. You scroll through the menu options, temperature, and timer using the flush lit buttons. The air fryer is perfect size for a side dish for around 4-6 people, reheating leftovers quickly, cooking kid’s meals, etc. and it’s small enough to tuck away when not in use and take out without it being a burden. It can cook very quickly at high temperatures so be prepared to keep an eye on any dish and not walk away for more than 5 minutes. The illuminating internal light is a must have for any air fryer to see how your food is doing while cooking without having to take the pot out. Cleaning is very easy with the non-stick pot and having the crisping shelf is great for vegetables, French fries, pizza, etc. I would recommend this air fryer along with any Bella Pro Series small kitchen appliance to anyone in the market for a great product at a reasonable cost.
