Crisp, deep sound in a small package

From one of the most well know and reliable names in the audio business comes the new Denon Home 150 wireless speaker. I have been a fan of anything Denon over the past several decades and for good reason; every audio device I have ever owned from Denon, whether it be a receiver, amplifier, etc. is very well made and the sound they have been able to create over 100 years of experience still stands true with the new Home 150 wireless speaker. Considering this is the smallest speaker in their line of wireless smart speakers, I was amazed by the power and sound just one sounds in a large room. Now with the option to sync multiple speakers throughout your house, business, etc. opens so many opportunities for audiophiles like myself and puts the Denon home wireless line near the front of the line as many other companies who have had the edge on this market for years.
Right out of the box and before I even plugged the speaker in, I could really see and feel the craftsmanship from the weight and materials they used to put this speaker together. The instructions for setting it up were fairly simple and similar to most other devices in this generation. After you plug in the speaker, you download the HEOS application on your smart device and, after logging in or creating an account, it will automatically recognize the speaker and sync it with your account along with your other Denon, Marantz, Definitive Technology, or other devices such as addition speakers and receivers with the HEOS technology/logo. The app provided an easy walkthrough during set up. After the speaker and/or other devices are synced on your account, you can add any music services you subscribe to stream to the speaker including Pandora, Spotify, Amazon Music, Deezer, Napster, iHeart Radio, Sirius XM, etc. The speaker also has options on the rear for an auxiliary input, USB input for digital audio, Bluetooth sync button, mounting screw hole and an ethernet input if you opt for a wired internet connection instead of Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, at this time, the smart speaker support has not been set up yet therefore I was unable to test those capabilities until the application receives a software update. The entire set up process including downloading the app, creating an account, and logging in to sync all my music streaming services took about 30 minutes.
Now for my favorite part, the sound. Initially I tried to use the speaker with the voice assistant however that is when I realized the software update has not been provided yet which is mentioned on a disclaimer on the side of the packaging. Therefore, I opted to stream music directly through a third-party service offered on the smart phone HEOS app. Saying I was surprised at the sound from the speaker would be an understatement, and this was even without adjusting the highs and lows. If you are familiar with the brand, it is what anyone would expect from a Denon product. The overall sound was incredible, better than most other devices I have used in the recent past. One of the distinct features of all Denon products I have owned in the past is their ability to provide ample power for low end bass while not overpowering or distorting the highs. I planted this speaker in a discreet area in the corner of our master bedroom to not distract from how my wife decorated which she was happy with and was only able to turn this speaker up to about 75% before it was so overpowering that we could hear it clearly on the other floor on the other side of our 3600 square foot house. Keep in mind, this was just with one speaker. Pairing it with additional HEOS compatible speakers/devices throughout that large of a space should amaze anyone who is into music as much as us and I can only imagine what the larger, more expensive, speakers in this line sound like. Not only do you have availability to change the streaming service through the smart device app, you can also set up to three presets on the top of the speaker itself as well as control the volume and play/pause and I can’t wait until voice assistance is added at a later date.
Overall, I’m very impressed with this speaker considering it’s the lowest model in this lineup and would recommend it to anyone in the market for a wireless smart speaker that loves crisp, loud sound.

Camouflaged high end yard speakers
on March 4, 2021

In my opinion, the Sonance Mag Rock speaker package are designed for audiophiles, like myself, who appreciate music so much they must incorporate their obsession into the outdoors to enjoy premium sound. Right off the bat, let me say the box these came in is HUGE as it contained all three rock speakers and is not exactly lightweight. However, the weight of the speakers show Sonance did not skimp on the material used to build these speakers not including the time it took to design them and add the finishing paint touches to attempt to blend them in with the outdoor environment. One issue I did notice that I would like to mention is on the underneath of the rock speakers, they appeared to just use clear caulk to seal the speakers together as you will see in the pictures I provided, and it was applied in a not so discreet way. This was surprising to me considering the attention to detail in the rest of the speaker design and aesthetics.
The speakers are a simple plug-and-play set up however you will need a receiver/amplifier to power the speakers as they are not a standalone and need a power source. Simply put, you connect a left and right set of speaker wires from your power and sound source to the bottom of the larger passive 10” subwoofer rock. You will then use the included wire from each of the other left and right rock speakers to plug into the bottom of the subwoofer rock… and voilà, you are done.
After I set up the speakers where I decided would be the best option in our yard which is where we would usually congregate when entertaining company or relaxing on our own, I tested a few genres of music. The speakers can handle a relatively good amount of power. I am using Zone 3 off my main entertainment center receiver, rated at 105 watts per channel, to power them. The right and left speakers were relatively crisp with a good balance of mid and high range sounds with no distortion. One drawback to sound I immediately noticed, and was aware of prior to acquiring the set, is the 10” subwoofer rock is not powered which means you are not going to get that dedicated power you might expect from a powered sub with an amplifier and crossover built in. One benefit to this in an outdoor set up is you do not need a power source in that area but, as an audiophile, you do sacrifice sound. The built-in crossover located in the subwoofer rock still allowed for some highs to pass through the subwoofer. This was not too much of a distraction since, with my set up, the right and left speaker were not too far away. However, music may sound odd if you extend the included six feet of cable for each speaker to further than that as one area of your yard will have no mid or high range sound while the other two area will have no low-end bass.
Overall, I am impressed with the quality build of the rock speakers except for the caulking on the bottoms which you cannot see when they are in place. However, keep in mind, a lot of what you will hear really depends on the power you are providing to the speakers and quality of the receiver/amplifier you are using.

Incredible 9-in-1 kitchen appliance
on January 25, 2021

The Bella Pro Series AirPro XL indoor grill is a fantastic indoor kitchen appliance for anyone wanting to avoid enduring the cold, wet or hot outdoor elements while also offering many other cooking options including roasting, broiling, baking, dehydrating, air frying, searing, etc. and is large enough to cook up to a 12” pizza. Calling this appliance just a grill would do it disservice. Right out of the box I could see and feel how well made and durable the appliance is. The lid, which is where the fan and splatter shield is located, is quite large, the 9-quart cooking pot, 5.8-quart air-fryer basket and grilling plate are all ceramic for easy cleaning, non-stick cooking, and are all dishwasher safe. It also includes a stainless-steel baking rack. The grill has several different presets on the control panel including broil, sauté, sear, pizza, air-fry convection, grill, roast, bake and dehydrate. It also has manual settings to control the temperature and a time and heats up within minutes due to the 1700-watt heating element and can be heated up to 500 degrees.
A recipe book is included in the box so, for my first run, I decided to try out making a pizza from scratch and cooking it in the grill. The pizza turned out delicious however you may want to check on it every so often because it does cook fast and the top got a little crispier than I expected because of the circulating air on the top. For my next run, I grilled chicken breast and steak to perfection on the first try with little effort while also not smelling up the kitchen thanks to the circular air technology which also allows for much faster cooking. For my next trial, I went with the air frying option and made broccoli as a side with a little olive oil, lemon and garlic salt. This also cooked much faster than I was used to compared to our last air fryer and was glad I opened the lid a little early to check on it; it took about 7 minutes and was cooked perfectly. There are many other recipes included in the book that we will be trying in the future and I am looking forward to how the grill performs considering the success I have had so far.
Overall, I have been pleased with the grill and the cooking options. After having separate appliances to perform all these functions, it is nice to be able to consolidate all into one machine clearing out more storage space in the kitchen. However, the grill is relatively large compared to other kitchen appliances so I would recommend measuring for storage space; the grill measures approximately 18” deep, 14” wide and 13” tall when closed. I would recommend this to anyone in the market for a great all-in-one kitchen appliance that is built well, cooks food to perfection with little effort and perhaps are looking to cut down on the amount of appliances you have in the kitchen.

Fast and discreet with great quality scans
on January 22, 2021

The new Epson Workforce scanner is everything I wanted and more built into a small, discreet at home scanner. At first glance, I thought it was going to be larger than I imagined considering all the bells and whistles it has built in however I was pleasantly surprised that it was much smaller measuring at less than 12” wide, less than 7” deep when collapsed, less than 8” tall when the top is collapsed and less than 12” tall when the automatic feeder is up. Set up was simple and self-explanatory as I only had to reference the manual to see what webpage I needed to go to download the software. The Epson software walks you through the setup in a few simple steps by linking the scanner and your Wi-Fi. You can also download the smart phone application and scan files/images directly to your phone wirelessly.
After setup, I performed my initial single page scan as a test and was shocked at how fast the page fed through the scanner, claiming up to 35ppm/70ipm, and the image popped up on my laptop wirelessly. The image I scanned was crystal clear, much better than the all-in-one printer I was using previously, and I did not realize until I scanned it that it scanned both sides without me even choosing the option to do so. There is also an option to connect the scanner with the supplied USB cable if you prefer that option. After the initial scan, I then entered a stack of papers and it automatically fed them through the scanner with ease and no hang ups or errors; according to the manufacturer you can load up to 50 pages in the auto-feeder. The software included with the scanner works great as I have used it previously with an older Epson all-in-one and has plenty of options to customize whatever project you are working on. It also has an option for software that will read data on your receipts and export them to third party software such as Quicken, QuickBooks and Turbo Tax to keep organized throughout the year for tax season.
Overall, I am pleased with the performance and how compact this powerful scanner is and would recommend it for anyone in the market for a great document and receipt scanner.

Lightning fast and durable with good specs
on December 31, 2020
Posted by: Grouticus
from Roseville, CA, USA
This is now my third ASUS laptop over the last ten years and I am firmly set to continue to go with them for anything computer and laptop related. With their most recent ZenBook creation, ASUS did not disappoint with the quality build and options they have incorporated into the Flip 15 model including the 11th generation Intel i7 processor, lightning-fast SSD, 16GB RAM, 512 GB memory, HD touchscreen compatible with a stylus, long lasting battery, Amazon Alexa and Windows Hello Face support to log in using your face without having to enter a password. The ZenBook has only one USB input, two USB-C inputs, a HDMI output and a SD card slot.
Being new to the ZenBook family, I was excited to have the option to flip the screen around to use it as a touch screen tablet and stand it up in a triangle shape for the kids to use as a display for their shows which does come in handy in certain situations. The one thing I noticed right out of the box before booting up was how durable the ZenBook felt in my hands compared to my previous ASUS laptops; feels like a cold metal material to the touch and, according to the manufacturer, is US military-grade. However, the durability and hardware included does come with additional weight compared to a tablet or smaller tablet style device with a keyboard.
As a casual gamer, the one reason I have steered clear of ZenBooks in the past is the lack of a dedicated graphics card. However, with this new ZenBook model, ASUS squeezed in a GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q 4GB DDR6 graphics card which is a welcome surprise, especially considering the size of the 96 Wh battery that stretches along the length of the laptop/tablet; you would think there would not be much more room to add a video card but somehow, they managed. I tested out two AAA rated games and they ran relatively smooth on a medium graphics setting however I did notice some screen stuttering and lag while the ZenBook was plugged in. You are able to access and upgrade the SSD fairly easy removing the T5 screws underneath the keyboard however I was unable to see an option to upgrade the memory.
The small bezel high-definition touchscreen is candy to the eyes and has technology built in to reduce eye strain which I could tell makes a huge difference even after using it for the first few times. The webcam is located just above the small bezel screen and offers a clear picture for conference calls. Another welcome upgrade is the sound which was engineered by Harmon/Kardon which offers crisp, clear sound however the two front firing speakers are not exactly loud enough for my taste and still prefer to use headphones in loud spaces.
Overall, I am impressed with this ASUS ZenBook and would recommend it to anyone in the market for a fast, durable laptop/tablet with the option to game and upgrade the storage of the SSD.

Another great Arlo product
on November 18, 2020
Posted by: Grouticus
from Roseville, CA, USA
I took a risk on Arlo years ago when they just came out with their first security cameras and have never looked back. In my opinion, Arlo has one of the best, if not the best, wireless security camera system on the market that is actually affordable and continues to make strides in the market setting the bar for other companies to try to keep up. They added to their arsenal with the new Arlo Essential XL Spotlight Camera. There are so many things to like about this security camera so let’s get started. First off, I was pleased to see they now make a camera that lasts about a year without a charge and it’s surprising they were able to do this considering it also has a very bright spotlight. You will immediately know how they made this possible once you open the box as the camera itself is about twice the length of their normal wireless cameras making room for a much larger battery. That was one of my issues over the years from their other cameras is that I would have to pull some of them down that weren’t wired to a power source to charge them. Potentially not having to charge this camera in a year is music to my ears. The other thing I am pleased to see with this camera is you do not need an Arlo Hub to connect it to your account, you can do it through your wireless network and smart phone app. The camera was very simple to set up through the app after you create an account; I added our new Essential XL camera to our existing system of five cameras within a minute or two. I installed it under the roof pointing at our boat parked in our driveway which works great; previously I had a camera and separate spot light and I was able to consolidate both into this one and relocate the old camera and spotlight to another area of our house. The spotlight is plenty bright enough for most areas and it also has color night vision instead of the typical greenish and black color imaging you would expect from night vision. The video itself is very clear with 1080p high definition and a 130-degree viewing angle.
This package comes with a screw on mount with hardware and charging cable. My favorite part about the Arlo system is their smart phone app. It is very user friendly and you are able to change many of the options within the app unlike some other security systems. I found that it is definitely worth considering keeping the Arlo Smart service because of their cloud storage and object detection to ensure you don’t lose footage and are able to filter out some notifications. I recently made the mistake of going to another security camera system and went right back to Arlo because of their great products and all the additional features built into the app that they are consistently updating with more options for their users.

Samsung hits the mark on stick vacuums
on November 6, 2020
Posted by: Grouticus
from Roseville, CA, USA
Samsung’s latest Jet 75cordless stick vacuum hits the mark on most downfalls of other vacuums in the saturated market. First off, I was aesthetically pleased with the look of the vacuum which, for most, is the last thing you might care about in a stick vacuum unless you have it mounted out in the open; we stashed ours on a wall in the laundry room. Out of the box, it was very easy to set up without much reliance on the instruction manual other than inquiring as to how long it would need to charge before the first use and how to clean and maintain it to maximize performance. I love the mount on the wall charging station versus a stand charge station because, for me, it takes up less space and is much sturdier. The wall mount also has clip in storage for a couple attachments.
After set up and initial charge, which did take a few hours, I immediately noticed how balanced and lightweight it was in comparison to the other stick vacuums I have had in the past. Removing the clear cannister to empty the trash was a little bit tricky at first because I was used to other brands but, after reading the instructions to ensure I didn’t break anything, it was quite simple. I could also tell after the first use that it is also very well made and durable. One of the things I like most about the controls is that it is a push button format so you don’t have to pull a trigger to keep it running like other vacuums. The default suction setting on the device is the middle setting so you can toggle down or up which to me makes perfect since and is usually enough power to get most jobs done with the exception of perhaps lightweight, small rugs and dense carpet. The vacuum is quite powerful on the high setting and even at the high setting it is not as loud as the other stick vacuums I have used. We are able to use the vacuum throughout our 3500 square foot house without needing to charge or replace the battery and toggling effortlessly between all three settings depending on the floor type.
The Jet 75 comes with several attachments including one for tight spaces and one with a brush on the end which works great for our vehicles and boats to get the crumbs out. My favorite feature and attachment of the Jet 75 is the hard floor cleaning attachment which is unlike anything I have ever seen or used as I’ve always been used to the spinning brush attachments. The hard floor attachment is a dense brush type fabric, think similar to a soft paint roller, that works wonders on our waterproof laminate flooring which is throughout our entire house; it literally leaves nothing behind. I also love that they included two types of spinning brush attachments so you can switch to use on area rugs, carpet, etc. You can also buy an optional dual spinning wet floor mop style cleaner attachment and back up batteries that are easy to change out, similar to a power tool, if you have a need for a longer running vacuum or in the event you need to replace it eventually. Overall, this has been my favorite vacuum to use for all our needs compared to the ones we have used in the past and would recommend it to anyone in the market for a powerful cordless stick vacuum with optional equipment.

Slim bezel monitor with great picture
on October 27, 2020
Posted by: Grouticus
from Roseville, CA, USA
If you’re in the market for a good computer monitor but don’t want to fork out the coin for anything too fancy, this may be the perfect monitor for you. Don’t expect too many bells and whistles or it to blow you away in comparison to some of the higher end monitors on the market, but it’s a good starter monitor for work, school and even gaming. Starting with the pros, the features I like about the Dell 24” IPS LED Free Sync HD monitor are the slim bezel, dual HDMI feature and clear, colorful and bright HD picture. It is very easy to set up and plug-and-play using the provided HDMI cable. However, in my opinion, the cons, such as no adjustable height, no vertical option, and no built-in speakers, counteract some of the pros. I am using mine as a second monitor for work and would have loved to have the option to rotate the screen vertical to view full length pages without needing an additional mount. I would have thought at this stage in the game, most of these minor features would come standard at least at this price point but do understand perhaps some people, maybe most, might not necessarily need those options in a monitor. Overall, it does the job as advertised and does have a great picture.

All-in-one cooking appliance
on September 20, 2020
Posted by: Grouticus
from Roseville, CA, USA
The Crock-Pot Express literally replaced four of our kitchen small appliances including our Crock-Pot slow cooker, pressure cooker, rice cooker and air fryer which not only saved me cabinet space but also simplified my easy cooking routine. Throughout the week, we typically would use one of the three small appliances almost every day and it was kind of a hassle to figure out which one to get out and then how to prepare the meals for my family. With the Crock-Pot Express, it has taken much of the thought process out of cooking since we’re now only using this one device. We have used the Crock-Pot to sauté or brown/sear so you don’t have to use your stove prior to slow or pressure cooking. Once you attach the air fryer top, the appliance automatically recognizes it’s attached and is ready to start air frying. We love using the air fryer option for vegetables but it also works great for fried chicken, fish, etc. and cooks relatively fast without excess oil saving you money and calories. We have even used the air fryer option before pressure cooking artichokes to give them some crispy flavor. Some of the other many options the Crock-Pot Express offers is the simple buttons for specific foods such as poultry, beef, beans, stew, and soup. The instructions are very user friendly and provide simple explanations on how to set up your appliance for specific cooking while also giving you a chart for air frying weights/times and a simple cooking guide for all the options it has. One of our concerns was that sometimes we would slow cook or pressure cook one dish and then use our air fryer for the side or vice versa. We thought we still might need more than one device when preparing large meals with the family but we were able to store them away to clear space on the readily available shelves. One of the other upgrades for us with the Crock-pot Express is that it is 8 quarts which is larger than both our old pressure cooker and slow cooker. Overall I love this appliance and would recommend it to anyone in the market for any one of the appliances I noted above.

Having had some experience with camera gimbals, I was anticipating what DJI was going to bring to the table with this update since phones have gotten larger in size in the past year. Unfortunately, the previous model did not work well with the larger updated phones available so we haven’t been able to use the gimbal properly and it was a bit of a hassle. Fortunately, DJI upped their game not only with the hardware but with what the new DJI OM 4 software was capable of. I have used some off-brand gimbals as well and, as far as I’m concerned, DJI always has set the bar for everyday gimbal users and has always been well worth the extra coin to throw down. The first thing I noticed is that it fit my new large phone perfect, which has the largest screen of any new phone on the market (besides the phablets), using the included magnetic phone clamp and magnetic ring holder (see pictures) as an included option if you don’t want to use the clamp. As a side note, I love the fact that they included both of these options. My only issue is that I have a folding phone case which obviously would interfere with the magnetic mount so I would need to pull my phone out of the case in order to use it which can be somewhat of a hassle. Regular, non-folding, phone cases should work just fine using the magnetic clamp or ring. The magnets are very strong so you shouldn’t have any issue with the phone coming off the gimble unless the clamp or sticky side of the ring fail. I would like to also note that the gimbal does fold for storage and they even included a pouch to keep it in. Once it’s stored in the pouch, it’s not much larger than my phone with exception of the bulky part however it probably would be pretty uncomfortable in a standard pant pocket so you would need to figure out how to transport it around if you were on a trip, such as in a purse or backpack.
After I charged the DJI OM 4 gimbal and downloaded the smart phone app, I was excited and ready to give this thing a whirl. Now to the nitty gritty… what this gimbal and the DJI software is actually capable of. Once your phone is mounted to the gimbal, it has no problem handling the weight of any phone on the market and balances it perfectly. The gimbal’s movements are super smooth and fluid as you would expect with the newer technology. I also love the fact they included the removable mount so you can place it on a semi-level surface and take pictures or video. One of the great things about the new software is the subject tracking so you could set the camera down, lock in on a target subject using their smart phone app software and just let the gimble and phone camera go to work to create a video without even touching anything; it’s like having your own personal videographer. I posted some pictures of the panoramic pictures I took of our living room that the gimbal took up to nine separate photos and pieced them together to make one. The gimbal has all the features you would need including the action button, remote control to manually move the camera, a trigger button you can customize, a zoom toggle as well as a mode button so you’re not constantly having to touch your phone screen. There are so many features built into the software including story mode, automatic panoramic features to take pictures or video of an entire area using the stand, etc. that you could spend hours on if you are an obsessive camera junkie. It’s also great for casting or video conferencing since it automatically follows any subject around while it records/films.
Being an amateur, I was able to create pretty incredible 8k video short stories which may not be worthy of stardom however seeing some of the videos online that more professional photographers have made using the same set up was pretty impressive to say the least. Overall, I’m not sure there’s anything on the market that could hold a candle to the new DJI OM 4 and think it’s well worth the extra money if you’re in the market for a portable smart phone camera gimbal that will blow your mind and impress your friends at the same time.

Can this robot machine vacuum carpet for one hour?

Yes, from my experience with a new machine and battery, it appears to be able to vacuum for about an hour before having to dock and charge.

Do they have a microphone and can the microphone be worn in either ear

They have a microphone on the power/volume control piece that is part of the wire and hangs closer to the right ear bud side, not in the ear bud itself.
