Great display, connection options, lots of fun
on April 2, 2024

The Zenbook 14” OLED is a nice media device that can do lite office work when you need to. I do love OLED displays. They are especially nice for watching videos and looking at pictures. They also are very fast. OLED displays have hit the market this year in a big way but ASUS has made them available for a while now in their laptops. ASUS is a computer company that leads the industry with their innovative products. With a great display, long battery life and one of Intel's newest Core Ultra 5 Processors. One of its most efficient CPUs ever makes for great fun. The chassis feels good with almost no flex. The touch pad is smooth and responsive and just maybe on the bigger side. The keyboard is backlit but not too bright. This is labeled as an Intel Evo laptop. Along with that you get one 1x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port, 2 USB Thunderbolt 4 ports with support for display output and power delivery, a full size HDMI 2.1 port. We also get WIFI 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. You should be able to connect pretty much any device you may need to this notebook. And throw in some fast USB charging for when you need it and why not some pretty good audio too and let's keep the weight down at 2.82 lbs. This model of Zenbook laptop only comes with 8GB of memory. Windows 11 probably does a better job managing memory than any version of windows. The online specifications confirm the memory is not upgradeable. Unless you need lots of browser tabs open or are doing more serious work I don’t think this memory limitation should be a problem. If you need more ram look at a different model. There is much to like here and it is not just a great display.

Nice modern keyboard and mouse combination
on April 2, 2024
Posted by: Reddog
It seems my daily work flow includes more and more online meetings and my mechanical keyboard was starting to become a problem with its loud clicking. The opportunity to try the new Logitech MK955 Signature Slim Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo came as perfect timing. When I set it up on my desk the first thing I noticed was how much more space I had. Right away the combo gave my desk a more modern sleek look and I also didn’t need my padded wrist wrest any longer due to the short overall height. The keyboard feels mostly solid although there is a small bit of flex. Typing is virtually silent with a laptop feel to the keys. The keyboard layout includes the number pad and is identified for Windows and Macs. Using the Logi Options you can also change many of the keys for other than their current functions. Logitech has relabeled the Windows key with one that says Start. It works the same as a normal windows key. The mouse is heavier than I expected and has a good quality feel. You can change the mouse cursor DPI with a button which is a function I do use for picture editing. Paring with the included dongle was plug and play for the most part. I am using the dongle and am also connected over Bluetooth with my Android tablet that I use as a second screen. I did have issues recognizing the keyboard when installing the Logi Options software but that was resolved on a newer release that auto updated my prior install. As a mechanical keyboard user I am struggling with my typing speed a bit but it is getting better. So far the experience has been good. And I look forward to the excellent battery life Logitech is known for. I did have a few issues that are probably mostly unique to my workstation. I use a KVM switch to switch between several computers. I have had some connection issues. It seems to be mostly cleared up with the updated Logi Options software. Some of my key presses have been repeated but I am not sure that it is just me not yet having the feel I normally do. There are a lot of affordable wireless mouse and keyboards available at all price ranges. I always recommend thinking about your use case. In my case I needed a full featured quality keyboard that was quiet. I also will be using the software to make the experience unique as I improve my typing feel and I am liking being able to button switch between devices that I would otherwise have to reach for.

A nice desktop core for easy expansion
on November 28, 2023
Posted by: Reddog
I’m in the process of rebuilding my home office. Like many I went from a daily commute to working from home full time. The way I use my home office has also changed. At any one time I am doing company work, gaming or building PCs. I need a Core hub or everything becomes very cluttered. With the exception of my company device all my personal devices have Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 ports. I have made having these ports a part of my buying decision since they started to become available. I have USB4 travel hubs that I use but they really are not a good option for a desk always on solution. For a core hub it's a good idea to go with a trusted brand. Belkin as a brand is well known and from my experience have always offered quality products. To me they have always tended to have an Apple aesthetic. And although I am a Windows user I have always liked their look. The brushed aluminum housing on this Core with the dark insert on the front and back looks very nice. It's a minimalist professional look. Strangely for a Belkin product there isn’t much for included documentation. It’s enough to get going but you will likely need to go to the Belkin website for further setup information. To get the most out of this hub you should have either a USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 port on your host device. Connect the hub to your AC power and connect the included USB cable to your host device and your off. The USB cable is 32” long so you do have some room to locate the Core. That’s pretty much it. Now you have a front USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) port on the front of the Core and three Thunderbolt 4 ports (downstream) at 40 Gbps which is the max output from all ports. The connection options from there are whatever you can imagine. Do remember that if you're using the ports for video you will need the correct adapters. This is a small Core at about 5.5” L x 3” W. It looks good and along with the USB-A port has one small LED on the front that tells you when you have a connection to your host device. I used my external Samsung T7 SSD for testing each port. In all cases both the front USB-A and rear USB Thunderbolt 4 ports tested at the maximum read and write speeds this drive is capable of. They were also within the margin of error tested on the native notebook ports. The Core has just enough weight that it should be stable on the desk. I found the Belkin website to have good information but I did find it a bit confusing as I was looking for specific product support information. I did find what I was looking for but it just seemed to bounce me around unnecessarily. As I update my office this will be a key device that ties my work and hobby together. I do recommend you always use quality cables. This will help to prevent problems.

Good budget protection
on November 9, 2023

The Insignia 8-Outlet 1,200 Joules Surge Protector is a relatively small package for lite duty surge protection. When searching for any surge protection you should determine what amount of Joules protection you may need. For example a simple search finds a Joules rating of 1,000 to 2,000 is recommended for basic electronics such as cell phones, laptops and other office devices. For something like a TV you should be looking at a Joules rating of 3,000 or more. Another factor might be if the surge protector offers insurance coverage. This Insignia protector offers up to $30,000 of insurance protection. Probably the most important feature is the A/C plug layout and if you can get all of the devices you need connected. I think Insignia has made a good decision here as you could get up to 4 of the wider A/C power adapters and 4 of the normal A/C plugs on this protector. Although any adapter might take up more than you planned. The surge protector has two LED indicators. One to indicate you have a good ground and the second to verify you are actually protected. There is a master on/off switch which is always welcomed. The power cord is long at 6FT for such a light duty protector. It's worth mentioning that the A/C plug is shaped so that you don’t block the second A/C outlet when plugged in. The size at around 8.5” long and 3.5” wide is nice and compact. It is also slotted on the bottom if you want to wall mount. Being such a compact protector it could even fit on a desktop. There is no USB charging. Overall it's a nice compact unit that can be used almost anywhere. This is a relatively light duty surge protector and there are lots of choices if you're looking for a feature left off here. I have always found Insignia to be a good value and do perform as expected. How any surge protector performs in its lifetime is impossible to predict. It's a good idea to choose your electrical devices from a brand you know.

A true desktop replacement just not on a battery
on July 22, 2023
Posted by: Reddog
With any product review there is always a chance you will have problems. How that affects any review will depend on the problem and its final resolutions. Some products may be early to the market and it could be updated during a review. Other times you might have a defect that requires it be sent back to the seller and you hold off on the review. If a replacement comes back defective it should always be noted and the problem fully detailed. If the replacement comes back like expected it might not require further mention. I base that on the replacement experience and my experience with the seller. After a few weeks with the ROG Strix Laptop it failed to boot into windows. I worked with Asus and was provided a replacement. I have had no issues with the replacement. I feel the issue was resolved to my satisfaction.
I am very impressed with the performance I have had with the Asus Strix RTX 4080 Gaming Laptop. During my review I traveled for a week and that gave me a good insight on its road performance. First off to get the most performance you will need to be connected to an AC outlet and not running on the battery. The RTX 4080 GPU here is a pleasure to game with and I had no issues with the 240Hz display such as has been reported in some reviews. The colors are uniform without any backlight bleed. I certainly cannot find fault with the Intel i9-13980HX CPU either. On a desk this is workstation level performance. During gaming when the fans are running full speed the noise is much lower than my prior gaming laptop with a 3070 Ti GPU. The keyboard is comfortable and the RGB lighting is well implemented. And for a change I like their Armoury Crate software.
Now there are a few decisions Asus has made here that I think could have been better. I don’t know why today we have to have a chassis that is a fingerprint magnet. There are just better finishes they could have used. It's not the worst I have had but they could do better. I would have liked to see 32GBs of Ram as standard at this price level. Also with the size of PC games files today and with the prices of SSDs I think 2TB is the minimum they should have used. The good news is most users can upgrade these parts fairly easily. I am right handed and putting the only Type A USB ports on the right side gets in the way of my mouse. A USB doc can be a big help here. I had gotten away from wireless mouse but I am back in that market looking now.
I ran benchmarks with the default power setting. I let the GeForce Experience set the gaming graphics options. My takeaway is you still need to drop your graphic settings way down if you want higher frame rates using the battery. Which really is not recommended. On AC power you're mostly good to go. If you want to take full advantage of the 240Hz monitor you will need to probably run at 1080p and always on AC power. I really think Asus has a winner here. The few complaints I have don’t distract from what's available here. I really think that if you're in the market for a top performing desktop you shouldn’t discount going with this Asus Strix RTX 4080 laptop in its place. If you are looking at gaming laptops you can’t go wrong here if the size is ok for you. If you add up the performance here and this is in your budget I can highly recommend it. It should provide great performance for years to come.

Much more than a Toaster Oven
on May 14, 2023
Posted by: Reddog
I am not that good in the kitchen. In my house I tend to leave the cooking to my wife and I do all the cleaning. So any appliance that is easy to use is very helpful to me. And as a plus gives the wife a break. I have only recently gotten good at using our countertop grill and am very happy with how it has helped make great meals for us. This is not the first countertop oven we have had. Our prior one stopped working and this one is actually a replacement. I didn’t use our prior oven much but I expect that as I get used to this appliance it will also be a very nice addition that I can use more. Much like I have with our other grill.
There is a lot going on here and it is going to take time to really get good at all of the ways it can be used. For what I have cooked in the short time I have had this oven I have had good results but I have only barely touched on what it can do. There are some things that even with the short time we have had it I do feel confident to talk about. For one it is a very nice looking oven and should fit in well in any modern kitchen decor. The lighting is done well. I don’t know how useful the cooking status light bar is but there is no denying it looks cool. The other front panel lighting for the controls, cooking options, temperature and timer are bright and easy to read. I am not a fan of touch sensitive controls as they feel a bit touchy but I think it's more I am just learning how to use it. They work fine but as you can expect they are going to show anything on your fingers. Also the front panel feels like it might be easy to scratch. I typically use microfiber cloths and that is probably a must when cleaning here. Overall this oven is quite attractive so it would be a shame if it doesn’t hold up well. I do have to say the internal lighting is probably the best I have ever seen on any appliance. You can really see your food cooking and as a novice that is a very nice feature. The door is all glass and swings up out of the way. I like this but it does make cleaning it a bit harder. Also this is a fairly large oven so be sure you have the counter space for it.
The oven comes with a nice selection of accessories but it is a shame only the baking pan is dishwasher safe. I have learned over the years to take that requirement seriously if you want your trays and racks to look good and last for years. This is not that unusual but still too bad. Another complaint is the mobile application. It gets pretty bad reviews on the Google play store. It is very limited in what it can do and it's a good thing you don’t need it. I don’t see me using it and will probably uninstall it. You can’t start the oven from the app. It can notify you when it's done cooking but the oven does that well enough on its own with a very nice sounding notification so the app really doesn’t help out anyway. It just feels like another way to push ads. The oven doesn’t come with a recipe book. The app does have a link to recipe suggestions so that may be helpful for some.
Overall I think as I use this oven it will be a nice addition to our kitchen. It will take time since any oven and even any meal can be a trial and error to get good results. It's a very good looking appliance that should look nice in any kitchen. Cleaning could be easier and it does need quite a bit of counter space. Also there are many other countertop ovens that are much more affordable that do pretty much the same thing. I wish the app was more useful but I don’t really see the need for it anyway. The fan is loud but not irritating like our older oven. I do like how the middle tray slides out when the door is open. I noticed that there is fogging in between the two glass panels on the front door. I hope this doesn’t become a bigger problem as it is used more.

Great budget Flightstick, needs a lighter touch
on December 29, 2022
Posted by: Reddog
As a piece of hardware the Turtle Beach - VelocityOne Flightstick seems like an amazing value. But as a game/sim controller it does have a few shortcomings. The number one problem for me is the stiffness of the stick. I am spending more time trying to get the feel right than I think I should have to. I will find some middle ground that I can live with but for me it probably will not work in a shooting game like Star Wars Squadrons. It is not such a problem in Microsoft Flight Simulator and the trim wheel helps. I also think that for a controller like this a detailed manual would have been a well received addition. The included instructions are fine for getting started. But pilots like their manuals. I did have to flash the firmware that is available in the Microsoft store and that went without any issues. I am on a Windows 11 PC. The stick feels good in the hand and the rubber-like material is smooth and helps with the grip. My small finger does rub the knurled screw used for adjusting the wrist rest but that's nothing I can’t fix. Changing the direction of the wrist rest allows for using the Flightstick in either hand. Once you get your wrist rest height set you have plenty of ways to control your aircraft. On the top of the Flightstick you have the flight management display where you set many of the functions of the stick using the large ring at the base for navigation. Within reach of your thumb you have an 8-way POV, analog POV, two microswitches, and the oh so nice to have, trim wheel and finally a small touch pad. On the base you get left and right multi-function levers. The left is mapped to forward and reverse thrust. While the right is mapped as flaps. There are the usual assortment of Xbox buttons that you can setup pretty much however you want. All of the buttons and switches look and feel good. There is a 3.5MM headset port at the base. I didn’t try to use this as my headset is wireless. Turtle Beach says, this support functions like Superhuman Hearing, EQ modes, mic monitoring and game and chat balance. This might be of interest for those with these audio needs and is another example of the value I think is available here. If you can overlook the stiffness of the stick there is nothing but good things to say about the rest of the hardware. The Flightstick is easy to setup although it might take a bit to get it how you like. It's built well and looks good. The base could be a bit heavier. I used it on a flat desk and it didn’t move but I don’t recommend using it in your lap. Finally there’s the stiffness. Because of that I can not recommend the Flightstick. This is a shame because I would like to. What I can recommend is that if you can try it first then you can decide for yourself if that is a problem for you.

Good traveling partner but caution
on December 11, 2022
Posted by: Reddog
USB4 docks are becoming common and that's a good thing. But not all USB4 devices will provide the same peripheral support. In the case of the j5create 4K Multi-Port Hub it only has one USB Type-A port. So if you have two USB Type-A devices you may have to also use the USB Type-C port. Which might require an adapter or even another hub. The lesson here is to think about what you need to connect to when you choose your USB4 hub connection options. What you might need for the desktop compared to what you need in a travel unit does matter. The j5create 4K Multi-Port Hubs video options are good because it supports both HDMI or DisplayPort. That covers the two most important display types you might need. The USB Power Delivery at 85W should be enough to keep you charged and power most anything connected to the hub. You do have to provide the power supply. You don’t need a power supply for the hub, only when using the power delivery feature. The hub is light and the port layout should help it take less space when connected. Many hubs put their port arraignment such that once connected the wires go in all directions. But unfortunately j5create elected to use a short USB Type-C cable to your PC. The wire is stiff and short and it limits where you can place the hub. Not a very good option for travel or desktop use. In my use the hub connected right away without any drama. I was using a Lenovo notebook with USB4 ports. I have another USB4 hub that I have been using in this same price range. It has a higher power delivery of 100W and two USB Type-A ports along with a card reader. But although it has more features it's a wire mess when connected. For that one reason alone I would prefer to travel with the j5create 4K Multi-Port Hub. Think about what you need to connect to when choosing your hub. I would say the j5create 4K Multi-Port Hub is a great travel hub. But there are better choices if you're mostly going to use it as a desktop hub.

A must have accessory for the Surface Pro
on November 25, 2022
Posted by: Reddog
If you are planning or thinking about getting a Microsoft Surface Pro do yourself a favor and get this Surface Pro Signature Keyboard along with it. Yes it adds quite a bit to the cost and I wish Microsoft would sell this for lower or better yet just include it with the Surface Pro as it really is a must have accessory. The problem is later you are going to want it so if you can, try and get it at the sametime. This is typically not an accessory that I have seen discounted so I don’t think waiting will save you any money. This keyboard is just a perfect match for the Surface Pro. The way it connects with magnets and doesn’t require its own power source, the keyboard is easy to type on for extended periods and I especially like the feel of the trackpad. The trackpad feel rivals those found on other higher end thin and light notebooks. The Surface Pro Signature keyboard also looks and feels good and doesn’t add any additional bulk. My only complaint is that in an earlier model for an older Microsoft Surface I had, this model is missing the keyboard backlighting. Not sure why that was removed but that doesn’t take away from the overall function and utility this adds. The Surface Pro Signature keyboard has very good build quality and you can expect many years of service with it. In fact my earlier model outlasted the actual surface I purchased with it which I finally had to retire when the battery failed. Not having this keyboard will be a companion that you will miss right away. There really isn’t anything else like it to round out the Surface Pro and should be the number one accessory you should buy when purchasing a Surface Pro.

The best one yet
on November 25, 2022

This is the second Surface Pro I have owned. I think mine was one of the first Surface laptops and it came with an Intel Atom processor. That processor was not really much of a performer but I really liked that overall package. Almost ten years later mobile CPUs have gotten much better for both performance and battery life. I had to retire that Surface laptop this year as the battery finally gave up. Still it was one of my favorite computers. The Surface Pro 9 is much the same. This formfactor has held up well over the years and it’s a pleasure to use the Surface 9. This model is equipped with the new Intel 12th Gen i5. And it runs everything I need just great. It has 10 total CPU cores. That is divided into 2 performance cores and 8 efficient cores. This is similar to the desktop CPUs that Intel is doing very well with. What this means is you are getting desktop-like performance with great battery life. And in this small package it works very well. In very real world use, with constant web browsing and watching videos I got six hours of battery life and still had 20% left. This was using the out of box defaults with just a bit higher brightness for the display. I never really got where I felt the battery life was a problem. But the good news is that with the efficient performance of this new mobile processor I never felt it slow down even with 12 browser tabs active. Not bad with only 8GBs of ram. That’s one of the great stories of these newer processors and Windows. Even though more ram is better for most use cases it’s not really needed. If you are doing more enterprise level work getting a model with more ram is a good idea, but for basic lite use and office tasks it's not necessary. Also for me I find the 256 SSD to be plenty of storage for my use case. If this is your only computer you might benefit from a bigger SSD. The display is crisp and clear which is typically of the Surface family. The Sapphire color is quite nice and adds a touch of class that my older gray aluminum Surface can’t match. But my favorite feature here is the addition of two USB 4.0/Thunderbolt 4 ports. This adds a ton of options for connectivity that to me is a game changer in such a small device. USB 4.0/Thunderbolt 4 allows high speed connections to a world of devices and is part of the Intel Evo branding. I am typing this review on a 4K monitor, using a full size keyboard and mouse. I am connected to a single USB Type C hub that has two HDMI connections, ethernet and USB type A. The hub is sending power to the Surface so I am charging all while connected using only one cable. I can just disconnect the one USB Type C cable and walk away with the Surface laptop. Just a great package for full on desktop use and sitting on the couch all in this small package. As with my first Surface the build quality is very good and I expect to get years of service. If you are doing heavier work loads then you might look for a bit more ram and SSD storage. But if you're doing lighter office work and the typical web browsing this package is just fine the way it’s currently specked. The Windows 11 home install found here is just fine for all but the enterprise folks. But if your needs include connecting to a network domain or you have to access this computer using a remote desktop, upgrading to Windows 11 professional is very easy. This is a competitive market but the Surface family still stands out for the formfactor and overall quality of this laptop. It's a pleasure to use and carry about and with the addition of the 12th Gen Intel CPU and USB 4.0/Thunderbolt 4 it is now a true desktop replacement for most users with the added benefit of being one of the most portable laptops available.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Can you add a SSD or NVME to the 528? Specs show an internal SSD PCIE! No pictures of the insides or specs anywhere online. Also looks like a 4 or 5 TORX for the back cover. Two screws near the hinge look like they are separate form the back cover????

The user guide makes no mention of being able to add additional storage.

Groom unwanted facial hair using the Philips Norelco Nose Trimmer 5000, a premium precision trimming kit. The Protective Guard System privides the ultimate comfort while the rotary and detail trimmers cuts close. Use the eyebrow attachments to evenly trim your eyebrows. The long-lasting lithium battery provide multiple usage and the pouch makes the trimmer easy travel. The nose trimmer is fully washable, making it easy to clean by simply running under a warm faucet.

Your Description and Specifications say it comes with a rechargeable lithium battery, and that it recharges in 1 hour. Your manual says to use NON-rechargeable batteries. I see no provision for a charger in the packaging. Which is it?

The trimmer comes with a single non rechargeable lithium battery. There is also no battery charger in this kit.

Enjoy crisp powerful sound while gaming with this Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero wireless PC gaming headset. The rechargeable battery offers up to 30 hours of use, and the remappable on-ear controls let you adjust settings as needed. This Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero wireless PC gaming headset has a sleek metal headband and interchangeable cooling gel-infused memory foam ear cushions that provide a comfortable, secure fit.

Whats up with the lack of reviews on this, is this a new product? Are the ear cups leather? Is the mic attached or apart of the headset?

The lack of review might be due to it being a very new product. It can be found on the Turtle Beach website. The ear cups are a very soft pleather. You are not likely to see full leather ear cups at this price range or even higher. The mic is removable and the mute button is on the left headphone. The mic works very well.

Is it 5.1 or 7.1

It is neither. It is a full 3D sound environment and not separate channels. You can find this feature in some higher end headphones. It seems to work well but its not your average 5.1 or 7.1 surround channel that we think of. Go look for Waives NX 3D audio to find out more about this technology.
