Aluratek - Universal Bluetooth Audio Receiver and Transmitter - model ABC53F
I have been asked many times how can I listen to my TV from my wireless headphones and that’s not a simple thing to fix. The options are easy for a single headphone they are less if you want to have two wireless headphones receiving the same signal at the sametime. Or any bluetooth device that can receive. That could also be any powered bluetooth speaker. The Aluratek model ABC53F is a solution but it might take a bit of time to set up. Depending on what you want it to do will depend on how difficult it is to get working. For all the options Aluratek is giving you I found the 3.5mm (⅛) connection to my receiver headphone jack the easiest for transmitting. But of course that would be the one adapter that they leave out. I had the larger female 6.35mm (¼”) adapter already but many maynot. Using the other connection options will completely depend on how complicated your Receiver or TV is. This for me was the first commercial product with the newest Bluetooth standard ver 5.0. It also boasts about having support for Bluetooth APTX-HD. I could go on just about that but let’s just say, great about time. To take advantage of this higher quality Bluetooth signal your receiving device must also support it. Sadly most wireless Bluetooth headphones on the market today do not. I found the single front panel control to be the most frustrating paring method I think I have ever used. You have one front panel button that depending on how its flashing and what color it is all you get. And as you learn to use it your finger is always blocking the flashing light. The first device pared quickly, I didn’t have such an easy time getting a second pared. If your going to use this so you can send music from your phone to any connect device, receiver, powered Bluetooth speaker or even your car, since it has an internal battery, it is easy to setup. If you want to transmit back to you such as your wireless headphones it is easy to setup. But the device has a switch on the back so it is either in receive mode or transmit mode. It does not support both modes at the same time. Ok so this wouldn’t be so bad but it clearly says in the setup guide, “You will need to re-pair your Bluetooth devices to ABCD53F after your switch between TX/RX modes.”. Ok so I have to repair again that’s not good. If I don’t change the transmit and receive modes I am ok as it will auto pair like most Bluetooth devices. The inclusion of Bluetooth 5.0 and APTX-HD support helps to make this an option if your looking for what it does. I think it needs some work on the interface side. I just never felt good about the pairing process even though it does work. Losing the paring because I changed modes makes that even more frustrating.

Now days if you buy a new notebook or computer it might not come with the restore disk like they used to. I bought this to make a restore image of a new notebook and then put it in the original box along with the other packing material. With the low price and the fact PNY has always been a solid product I expect it will work if I ever need it. I bought the 32GB version since the restore image of Windows 10 was 19GB. Keep that in mind if you buying this for the same reason.

Plantronics – RIG 500 PRO PC Gaming Headset
I like to think I give a fair shake for all the reviews I write. But sometimes you do come across some products that you just want to set aside. Unfortunately the RIG 500 Pro PC Gaming Headset is one to set aside. Rule number one a headset has to be comfortable right from the start or it is already suspect. The Rig 500 just simply does not fit me well. I am a fairly normal size person. Not to big or small just about right in the middle. And typically I don’t have a problem with the fit of most headsets I have tried. Each one has a unique character and until you have it on your head for a while you never know for sure if the fit works for you. The ear cups don’t fit completely around my ears which like the rest of me are average in size. The ear cups are well padded and feel fine even if the opening is to small for me. But it’s the clamping force that is to tight even though I have been spreading them out. After stretching them they feel loose but for some reason that still hasn’t helped and the clamping force is the main reason for the discomfort. The head band seems to work well but that doesn’t help that I can only wear these for an hour and then they have to come off. I do like the look Plantronics has here, almost steampunk but in a good way. The headset is very lightweight and the gold and black color scheme go well together. As a lifelong PC gamer like me comfort and having a great mic is critical. I had high hopes for the mic as Plantronics is a leader making great headset mics. But not here, my gaming partners complained from the first time I used them and of course I didn’t mention I had a new mic. They complained about hearing static and my breathing. I tired every position I could set and it didn’t seem to help either problem. I suspect the mic is just to sensitive and maybe more time manually setting the mic input on my audio software can help a bit. A foam pad on the mic end would have been a nice option. And speaking of options your not getting much here. The only option is a single flat 4.5” 3.5 mini jack cable. Try getting that to reach the back of your gaming PC. Since I had to put an extension on to reach my computer inputs that could have contributed to the static. Also since this single cable carries both audio and the mic signal I had to use a Y adapter for my dedicated inputs. They should have included a 10’ cable with separate audio and mic connections since after all a big selling point here is the included Dolby Atmos support on the PC and Xbox. Included in my package was a software key to download and install the Atmos support. Even after that I honestly can’t say on the demos I was won over. Dolby Atmos has a lot of promise and it is highly regarded in the home theatre market but its support in games is just starting. Since positional audio was pretty much removed from Windows years ago this at least brings hope. Maybe it’s not fully realized yet but the gaming industry should catch up. You can purchase your own software key for Atmos support in the Windows store since it works with any stereo headset. The actual sound quality felt mostly flat to me with maybe a touch more bass. But not so much to crowd out the mids and highs. I really didn’t have much to complain there. It’s not audiofile clear but it is about right at this price range. Put in a better mix of accessories and fix the clamping force and this might be a good option for cross platform use since it supports both consoles and the PC. Be sure you try them on before you buy as there are many options in this price range. Oh and if your not plugging into the front panel of your computer you better get an extension or it’s not going to reach the back.

Very cool way to take pictures

Rylo 360 Action Camera
There is a lot to like with the Rylo 360 camera. First thing I noted was the aluminum build quality and very nice packaging. Rylo gives you pretty much every cable you need. Mine came with the Apple connector in a separate box. Included with the camera box was a cable for USB type C, type A and on the camera end is a micro USB, also included was 32GB SD card and a small carrying pouch. I had no problem with the software installing and downloading movies on my S8+. The camera and software are very easy to use and the camera showed a run time on the OLED screen at around 35 minutes. It just so happened my grandson was having a birthday and this seemed like an excellent time to see just how much difference a 360 degree camera shot would be than all of the smartphone cameras that were being used. I set the camera up on a central location and just let it run. It was a lot of fun to go back and look at the movie. Not only was the birthday boy in all of the images but so were all of the other people in the room. It was a completely different experience than any other movie I have ever made. Later I took it on a walk around my house to take pictures before a repaint that is coming up. The image stabilization this camera can do is simply amazing. The software is extremely easy to use and you can pan in the picture or look at any individual frame. It is very powerful for being so easy to use on a phone. With this build quality and the uniqueness of the kind of pictures you can take make this just a totally new experience. When you go back and see things in the movie you have created that were not even the main focus of what you were shooting it is hard to explain. It completely opens up a whole new way to make and watch what you might have captured that was a complete surprise. Great build quality, fantastic image stabilization, powerful and easy to use software and a camera mount to put on a stand or selfie stick, there is just so much happening here. And one can only wonder what pictures you might end up with that you didn’t even know you were taking.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact in White Silver
Using the Sony Xperia Compact phone has been more of a challenge than I expected. This isn’t Sony’s fault I just have been using larger phones for quite a while now and the Sony goes in the complete opposite direction. On the hardware side Sony had done a excellent job here. You have the latest Snapdragon 845 which at the time of this review is one of the few phones currently available with this powerful processor. It has a beautiful high definition display with a very high screen pixel density. Sony does know how to make a great display and it shines on this phone. It comes with a 5.0 inch display that has clear bright colors, deep blacks that makes for a very high contrast ratio. This is a true HDR display and competes with the top phones in the market and gives nothing away. It won’t support Google’s VR headset but that’s not what this phone is for. Sony also put the base storage at 64GB with 4GBs of ram. The phone is very fast and again gives no ground here to its competition. Like most flagship phones today the camera is very good and the camera software is feature rich. The image stabilization works very well. There maybe better cameras but I think your skill taking the picture probably matters more than any hardware limitation. A very nice touch on this phone is the stereo speakers. At the right volume they sound very good. Speaking of sound Sony has followed other leading phones and left out the headphone jack. I have fairly good in ear headphones and I don’t like this trend but I have to say that using the included USB C adapter this phone sounds very good. I am still not convinced this is a smart move given Sony’s rich family of audio devices. You do get the latest version of Android 8.0 here and that includes Bluetooth 5.0 with full aptX and Sony’s own LDAC audio technology. Together this is as good as wireless Bluetooth can get today. I have yet to find Bluetooth headphones that support the 5.0 standard but getting aptX and LDAC support are built into this version of Android and other headphones so better wireless sound is available. What Sony has done here is put the most current technology is a small package. But it is this small package that I have trouble with. I am now confused since its been a while since I have had such a small phone and I certainly never had one with this level of technology. When I am out I forget it is even in my pocket. Yet when I am sitting down and surfacing the web I miss the larger screen. It does everything you could want a flagship phone to do. I could easy make this my daily driver since it does everything my larger phone does. There is one thing that is missing here that I might miss the most and that is wireless charging. The larger version of the Xperia XZ2 does have wireless charging and a few other minor features the compact doesn’t have, but all in all you are getting the same high end technology but in the compact form factor. If your looking for a flagship phone in a compact size this is a very nice option. If you are addicted to the larger screen I would recommend looking either at the larger Xperia XZ2 model or its competitors. But you can’t fault what Sony is offering here if you absolutely do not want a large phone.

Another small step into the future

The ecobee Switch+ Smart Light Switch adds an interesting touch to most any room. I installed the switch in a bathroom because it was one of the few places I had a single switch that was only controlling a light. The installation was fairly easy but it did require a four wire connection. My home was built in 2004 so I had the wiring needed. The wall switch was quite crowded with wires and the ecobee itself also takes much more of the outlet box then a simple on and off switch. But I was able to stuff the wires far enough that I did get the switch to install and fit correctly. I did turn off the power to that outlet from the main breaker and I would recommended anyone doing there own install to do the same. You will need to install the phone app for your Android or IOS device to setup the smart light features. The app has quite a bit of help videos so you might want to check them if you have an older home for help if needed. Once registered I was able to connect to my WiFi network. The whole process might have taken about half an hour. By default the switch can manually turn lights on and off, has a motion sensor to turn on the lights on when it detects motion and also has a night light. Once you setup the device on your Amazon account you have voice activation and full Alexa support. It also supports Google Assistant, Siri via its HomeKit support, SmartThings and IFTTT. Pretty much the current leaders in the voice assistant hardware market. A few days after the install the app was updated which is a good sign and should be expected for a switch in this price range. So far it has been working very well and I have had no issues or problems with its operations. The speaker is clear and the Alexa voice sounds very good. The music playback was better than I expected and it is nice to listen to the top new stories or weather getting ready for work. If your adding to your smart home devices this is clearly a nice addition. Since you already have a light switch your not giving up counter space or have a wall plug to work with. It would be easy to take for granted the power that is behind this switch but that power and utility is growing all the time. If you want to add to your smart home network this is a winner and should be a standard fixture in new home builds. And I expect it will become the normal. When that day comes it will be strange to think we ever had dumb switches.

A true wireless mouse

CORSAIR - DARK CORE SE Wireless Gaming 9 Button Optical Mouse with RGB Lighting and Qi Wireless Charging - Black
As a long time PC gamer I have had lots of gaming mice over the years and I enjoy PC gaming now maybe more than ever. As primarily a PC gamer having a good keyboard and mouse is very important to me. Newer gaming mice have settled into a standard feature set so it is little things that make a difference in a very crowded market. The Dark Core is a very good looking mouse. I have average size hands and the mouse is very comfortable for me. I think Corsair has done a very nice job with the RGB lighting. I have been using the mouse with the matching Gaming Qi Wireless Charging MM1000 Mouse Pad. These two were intended to be used together although it is not required and they both are very nice products. I now have quite a bit of gaming time on the Dark Core mouse and it is working very well for me. I especially like the thumb rest on the side. It seems a bit larger than most gaming mice and I do think they got the feel right. I also like the feel of the material Corsair used. Its smooth and feels very good in the hand. Teamed up with the MM1000 Mouse Pad allows you to wireless charge the mouse which I really like. Mice with RGB lighting are going to have a shorter battery life if you run with the lighting on which is how it should be used. Mated with the MM1000 Mouse Pad makes this a truly wireless mouse where you do not ever need to connect to a cable. For me personally I don’t usually spend much time mapping the mouse buttons. I judge gaming mouse on how they feel while gaming and over a full days use. The Dark Core does both very well. Still this is not a perfect device. I am not a big fan of the Corsair CUE, Corsair Utility Software. It just seems to be very limited and dated looking. And although I think the comfort is right I think some of the mouse button placements could have been done better. Still matched up with the MM1000 Mouse Pad for wireless charging and with its good looks and nice feel I am making this my primary gaming mouse. One final observation is the mouse is a bit heavy from what I normally use. It does not have removable weights so if you like your mouse very lite this one is probably not for you.

CORSAIR - Gaming Qi Wireless Charging MM1000 Mouse Pad - Black
The MM1000 wireless mouse pad is very cool when teamed up with the CORSAIR DARK CORE SE Wireless Gaming Mouse. The combination of both give you a true wireless gaming mouse. Like most gaming mouse pads it is fairly large. On this mouse pad that makes more sense than other gaming mouse pads that seem overly large for no real reason. Most gamers could use much smaller mouse pads but at least this one has a real value for the size. When used with the Corsair Dark Core SE mouse you insert a small wireless charging receiver in the front USB port and dock it to the top right of the mouse pad and the mouse will start charging. The mouse pad has a blue LED that confirms your positioned correctly on the mouse pad and the mouse is charging. You can game with the charging receiver still in the mouse but it will be lighter if you can take it off. The pad itself is built very solid and the surface is very flat and consistent throughout the whole surface. The mouse pad has a very good feel and from my gaming with it feels very accurate to where you completely forget about it. That is how a mouse pad should be. The mouse pad has a braided cable that terminates into two USB male connectors on the computer side. On the mouse pad side there is an open USB port that I have the mouse wireless receiver plugged into. There is a very defined circle where you dock the mouse with the included micro USB wireless charger connected to the mouse. You can leave the wireless charger in the mouse if you want but it will add a bit of weight so I remove it as the mouse is a bit heavy with it installed. I have also found that the micro USB wireless charger fits other wireless mouse and charges them just like the matching Dark Core SE. So the good news is at least in my testing you can use the wireless charging on pretty much any wireless mouse since the actual charger is a small USB receiver. This adds quite a bit more flexibility on what mouse you might want to use with it. I can’t say for sure it will work with all wireless mouse but it worked on the two different brands I did try it with. This is a great feeling mouse pad with a very solid build quality, and adds the additional USB port right next to your mouse for your receiver where it couldn’t be any closer. I do still think it is a little on the large size but its not much different in size than most gaming mouse pads. This is a very nice product and if the wireless mouse receiver will also charge your current mouse it makes it an even better desk companion. I am matched with the Corsair Core SE and together they have become my gaming combination of choice. And it also will charge my phone. That is one less device on my desk. Got to like that.

I have been trying to do what the dentist tells me but honestly just before and right after a visit I am at my best. Then I slip back to my old ways and make excuses on the next visit about how I am going to really, really do better. This was my chance to try something new for me. I haven’t had prior experience with anything but a standard toothbrush. The Philips Sonicare turns out to be much easier to use than I expected. The first time I used it I don’t think I quite understood what I was doing. Now having used it for awhile it is coming to me. And it is getting easier the more I use it. You can read any number of these reviews for the features that make this Sonicare product unique. But if the way my teeth feel after brushing, if you want to call it that, gives me hope. The Clean setting seems just fine for me and according to Philips should be good for anyone. So although you do have three settings Clean is the default. As a new user I can’t help but wonder why I didn’t try this technology before. The final judge will be when I go back for my next dental visit. It will very interesting to see if how my teeth feel translates into a compliment from my dentist. I do have some concerns about the cost of the brushes but today I am giving the Sonicare a big thumbs up. And if my next visit to the dentist I get a thumbs up I will be a true believer.

AirTV - 8 GB 4K Streaming Media Player with Adapter - White/blue
When I opened the box of the AirTV my first reaction was either someone was being playful or trying too hard to either be cute or at least standout from the crowd. With it’s blue and white color it really doesn’t go with most of the devices one might have near there TV. But in a kids room it might be right at home. Some may just think its a nice change from the more common black color we see all the time. You sure won’t mistake this remote sitting on your table from others you might have. One thing I hadn’t seen before is it wall mounts. And that is complimented by the remote being bluetooth so you don’t need line of site to operate it. The unit itself seems to be built well enough but from there things are just not quite right. As soon as I connected it to my network it started to update itself. I didn’t get to see what version of Android it actually shipped with but after the update it was on Android TV 6.0.1. That in itself wouldn’t be that big of a problem. The problem is the security path I see it reporting today is from April 2017. This is really not acceptable for what could be an always on device. This makes this streamer very hard to recommend. The manufacturer is claiming that it will get Android 7.x at anytime but if there most current update contains a year old security path what does that say about future support. There are some positives here and some other unknowns. After the update I had problems connecting to the Google Play Store. This is critical since apps that are installed will also need updates. I did finally get the Play Store to update itself and then the installed apps by being persistent but that was another experience that could throw a new user off. The remote will also need to update and that took two attempts as it lost connection during the first attempt. I got closer to the unit and that resolved the final update. If you can looking past these Google update and security issues there are some good things to say. The packing was done very well and it comes with pretty much everything you need including the HDMI cable. That’s a cable that a lot of manufacturers are starting to leave out so it was nice to see it came with one. A big feature set here is Sling TV support which includes a big blue button for Sling TV on the remote. In fact during the setup you have to create a Sling account to continue setting up your Google account. If your a Sling subscriber already this makes access very easy. You can setup an account for a free trial and once setup it does treat Sling as just another app with a quick launcher from the remote. Another nice feature here is the included USB over the air tuner. Mine found 80+ free channels that are accessed in the Sling app. Sling includes your over the air channels in there programming guide and its presented in a fairly simple interface. Picture quality on my 4K TV was nice and clear. I didn’t have issue streaming 4K from YouTube either. Looking at the specifications on the AirTV website doesn’t say anything about HDR support so if that important to you this is probably not your streamer. There is some interesting design choice here like the color and the wall mounting but today you really need to have the manufacture keep there devices patched. Since Sling TV is an app on most streaming device I just can’t recommend this device over the more established brands. I can’t speak to long term support but my first experience leaves me unimpressed.

Bought this Ryzen 2700 computer and I’m happy with it. Though, I have gotten the black screen of death for no reason twice. Everything runs fast and seems like a solid PC. Due to error screen 4/5. How do I collect my two free games from Radeon 580?
You should not get hardware lockups. I suggest you get support and find out why this is happening. It could be a memory or power supply issue you will want fixed under warranty. I didn't get any information on the free games so you might want to call where you bought it to find out if you qualify.

No this computer comes with both a wired keyboard and mouse. They are not wireless.

Would this computer be good for flight simulators like Xplane 11 ?
I have a friend who plays flight sims and I think he would agree this is not the computer for that. Look for a graphics card with 8GB of memory or more. Flight sims will take advantage of the extra memory to improve your viewing distance and scenery.

You can probably install Office 2007 but you might not get patches for it from Microsoft anymore. And it should work the same as any windows computer.

There is no annual fee with this version. Office 365 is the subscription based version.
