Nice hardware marginal software

eero Pro 6 AX4200 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wifi System (3-pack)
I had a lot of hope for the erro Pro 2 Wi-fi 6 Mesh System however I think sometimes companies try to make their system too easy and restrict access to that end. The erro comes in a big box and the presentation is very good. You get the three mesh devices, three power adapters, one ethernet cable and some readme cards. The mesh devices have a good heavy feel to them and include a USB Type-C power port and two gigabyte ethernet connections. There are no physical buttons on the Mesh devices. The three readme cards get you started on the actual setup. The first thing you need to do is download software from the Apple or Google play stores so you can connect to the Mesh System through Bluetooth. I was a bit disappointed to see the Android version I would need was only getting a 3.6 rating by there user reviews. For hardware without physical buttons good software is critical. The setup process is actually ok but you never get a sense of what is happening until it's done and you're moving on to the next steps. I always find that frustrating, especially when it takes longer than you expect or doesn’t complete the task at all. By default the erro Pro wants to be your only router and has features for advanced security as a month long trial or for a monthly subscription. For $2.99/mo or $29.99/yr you get an advanced security package, safe filtering, ad blocking, activity center and weekly insights. For $9.99/mo or $99/yr your plan also provides a 1Password account, encrypt.me VPN and Malwarebytes. All of these might be a value add but at this price level I think they could have at least provided a longer trial period. Also without this monthly subscription the default features are really very limited. And this is my biggest gripe with the eero Pro. The default software is very limited and I think in an effort to keep it simple they have neglected more advanced users or those with networks that do not want the erro Pro operating as both the router and Wi-Fi. Unfortunately this limited visibility to the advanced settings of the Mesh System seems to be all too common in today’s consumer networking software. So this gripe isn’t something new that erro is doing. I have a high end router and many wired devices. The erro Pro is capable of handling my network setup and could replace my existing router but I want the advanced feature of my router that the erro Pro hides. To get the erro to work in my system I must first set it up without my router connected and then set the erro Pro in bridge mode. This was very frustrating partly due to the lack of any status update from the software of the changes I made until it was done. After several reboots and almost residing myself that I would need to contact eero support I was successful. So in my setup the erro just replaces the existing Wi-Fi and my existing router is still in use as is my wired network. This process would not have been so frustrating had there been a reset button on the #1 Mesh device or if the software did a better job of reporting what it was doing. But with some trial and error I was able to get this setup exactly how I wanted. The Wi-Fi in my existing router is not Wi-Fi 6 but it is very good and has given me the maximum 320 mbps internet speeds provided by my internet service provider. Recently I have been using the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset. The Quest 2 supports WI-Fi 6 and I have been using it for playing game wireless from my PC. So the faster my speeds and the more stable my connection does greatly benefits my gaming quality. My original Wi-Fi reported connection speeds of 866 mbps to the headset. The software connection to the erro Pro 6 reports speeds of 1200 mbps. This is quite a big leap and would not be possible with my original Wi-Fi. The connection has been rock solid and I am very pleased. I have also discovered that my almost two year old Samsung Galaxy S10 supports Wi-Fi 6 as did both of my two gaming computers. One I built this year and one is over two years old. So I am better able to use this faster Wi-Fi than I expected. If the eero Pro would have Pro level software I would have been very pleased. If your needs are plug and play and you don’t mind paying a monthly fee this is a good device. If your needs are total control over your network configuration this is a much harder device to recommend. Yes, it can be adapted to pretty much any network configuration but the software makes this much harder than it needed to be. I would have also liked to have access to the Mesh System from a browser and not only through the cell phone software.

Quality wall charger with power to spare
on November 10, 2020

Belkin - BOOST CHARGE 24W Wall Charger - White
The Belkin Boost 24 watt wall charger comes from a company that is known for the quality of their products and this charger continues that tradition. There is not much to say about this charger as it's another workhorse that just does its job. The build quality feels like you could drive over it with a truck and it wouldn’t even notice. It is just big enough for its two USB type A connectors. And the outlet connectors flip back into the charge body which helps to make it travel friendly. Besides excellent build quality you have a full 24 watts of charging power in each of the two USB ports. This should allow you to charge any device that supports charging over a USB connector but don’t expect it to replace a large notebook charger. In my testing I didn’t find that it charged faster than the included fast charger that came with my Samsung S10. But it is nice to have two devices charging to reduce the number of outlets I would normally need. With the price of cell phones that can easily exceed one thousand dollars I highly recommend you only use a charger from a trusted company. Also the current trend seems to be to no longer include a charger with a new phone. The Belkin charger is a very high quality unit that should last for years of use and its almost universal compatibility replaces the chargers that might not come in your next device purchase

Pocket sized and 5G to go

Google - Pixel 5 5G 128GB (Unlocked) - Just Black
The Google Pixel 5 with 5G is an interesting phone. The black aluminum body looks and feels very good in the hand. I really like the simple layout of just a power and volume button. The display is OLED and is able to use a 90Hz screen refresh rate. It’s a 6” 1080p screen with HDR10+ and looks crisp and sharp. I found the screen to have very nice colors out of the box. I also like that it supports the always on screen. The phone uses a Qualcomm 765 Snapdragon which isn’t the fastest chip out today but I never found it to lack in my usage. I don’t play mobile games so that might be a consideration. The phone comes with 128GB of local storage and 8GB of ram and it is IP68 dust/water resistant. The phone supports Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD support so if you have this aptX support in your Bluetooth headphone you will get very high quality music. I do wish Google supported SD cards with their phones but this was dropped long ago. The phone has stereo speakers on the bottom and they did sound very good. This was also true for incoming and outgoing calls. The back fingerprint reader was easy to setup and is very fast in use. The phone supports fast wireless and wired charging including reverse charging in the event you ever need to top off another device. As is the case with Google phones the picture quality is excellent and includes an ultrawide lens. The phone supports video recording up to 4k@60fps and 1080p up to 240fps. The camera does an excellent job in most any lighting condition. The phone comes out of the box with Android 11 and the October 2020 security update. As is typical with Google phones this is pure Android at its finest and is a pleasure to use. In my testing as seen in the attached image T-Mobile 5G service is all over the map in my local area. On one street I could match my home cable connection, on the next it was no better than 4G. The quality of the 5G was directly related to the signal strength. Where it was strongest the speeds and ping were good enough to replace my home cable service. If only the signal was more stable. This might not be due to the Pixel since this is the first 5G phone I have been able to test. Verizon has a different type of 5G then T-Mobile so the results could be very different. My take is when buying a new phone today, having 5G is a good idea but I would not let it be my primary reason to choose one phone over another. However as more 5G service is built out I would hope the stability also improves. I do like the Pixel 5. I really like it's camera and clean Android. The 5G is still a question to me but I am glad it's here. The new phones available give you lots of choices. I am not sure Google has enough here to make the case that their phone is better than the competition. This is also true now that Samsung has announced 3 years of support for their current phones. This was one of the primary reasons to choose a Google phone. The Pixel 5 is a very nice phone and I enjoy it but I find it hard to make it a solid recommendation with the other options that are available.

A very unique stereo headset

AfterShokz - OpenComm Bone Conduction Stereo Bluetooth Headset - Slate Gray
The AfterShokz OpenComm Bone Conduction Stereo Bluetooth Headset is a very unique headset in many different ways. I had heard about bone conduction headphones and was very interested in getting to try them. I have reviewed many different types of headset over the years and this one will stand out as very different then those others. My first question was since this headset does not use eartips would the sound be good enough. Well the answer is both yes and no. If you are looking for a true audio experience then no these will not be equal to in-ear headphones in this price range. However when matched to almost any other stereo headphone/headset that you might wear all day I do not know of another headset that matches up to them. The sound is good but not great. At a normal volume they do ok and making them louder does not make them sound better. But I think as their primary role of being a stereo headset you would wear all day they are just fine. At a normal listening volume they are clear and because they are a stereo headphone you can enjoy listening to your music without the fatigue you can get with in-ear headphones. Plus since they sit near your ear you have the great advantage of not blocking out the sounds around you. The boom microphone works well and I never had a caller ask if I was on a headset at all. My second main criteria is always how comfortable a headphone is. This is where I have mixed feelings with this headset. I like that they do not fit in my ear. But for them to work they have to put constant pressure on your head just in front of your ears. It does not require a lot of pressure but even after wearing them for most of the last week I am still not where I forget I have them on. And it is not that they are uncomfortable but it is a different fit so it's a different feeling. Part of my issue is the headphone band. It is designed to keep the headphone in place and is where the stiffness that holds them in place comes. The band in the back doesn’t actually contact your head. On me the headband sits off about an inch from the back of my head. So if I sit back in my desk chair the band will touch my chair. It is like I know it's back there all the time ready to snag on something. And even though the headphone moves with my head I just have not become accustomed to it yet. Another issue I have is the boom mic doesn’t fit up against my face but bows out around the side of my face and sits about an inch away. To me this takes away from the ascetics of the headphone which for the most part they are very good looking. The headphones have a very nice feel and build quality. I like how simple the controls are. There is a dedicated multifunction button for managing calls that is easy to reach and works very well. There are two buttons for turning on the headset, paring and volume control. The button controls are simple and logical and I do like how they work. The headphone is IP55 rated which is particle and basic water protection. With their secure fit and the IP55 protection they should be just fine for active wear. Bluetooth pairing was simple and they also support NFC pairing although I didn’t need to use that function. The headphones come with a nice case and a magnetic quick charging cable. You will need to provide your own USB power adapter. If you're looking for a stereo headphone you can use all day and you do not need a high end music solution these may work very well. The way they vibrate to get that music to you and the fit is probably something you would have to try. Even in conventional headphones audio and fit will vary for each individual. Certainly for today's home office workers these have the unique feature of 8hrs of battery life with quick charging, they're great for phone calls and listening to your music in stereo but still having your ears open so you can hear what is going on around you. They won’t win any sound audio quality awards but what they do they do very well.

A great gaming headset for the Xbox or PC

Astro Gaming - A20 Wireless Stereo Gaming Headset Gen 2 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC and Mac - White/Green
The Astro A50 might be all the wireless headphone any gamer needs for use with their Xbox or PC. They have a very pleasing and balanced sound and are very comfortable to wear. To me those are the two most important things I judge any headphone must have. The boom mic is very flexible and was very well received by my friends during multiplayer gaming and they can be a critical bunch. The controls on the right ear were easy to reach and simple to use. I had no problem getting over 10+ hours of battery life. The headphone is lite, has a good amount of padding for the ears and they never got hot. I am a bit mixed about the green and white color scheme but that is intended to match the Xbox colors. I can easily give them a pass for that since they are so comfortable that you really can forget you have them on. I am also very glad they used a USB C connector for the charging. This just makes plugging them in to the USB so much easier than the older micro USB connector. Do note this headphone is wireless only and does not support a wired connection. I had no issues with the wireless range and never had any connection issues. Setting this headphone up was a simple plug and play process right out of the box and they were ready to go. I find it very hard to find fault with the A20. They just do what you want without any fuss at all. If I had one issue it would be the plastic build. But this helps to contribute to the lightweight so it's a trade off that is worth it. But even there you don’t get the creaky sound that some other headphones suffer. I am very much looking forward to using this headphone on the new Xbox console when it becomes available in the coming weeks.

Google - Pixel Buds True Wireless In-Ear Headphones - Clearly White
For any headphone I always put sound quality and comfort as my two most import requirements. The Pixel Buds have a very natural sound at a low volume but they just didn’t impress with that WOW! you would expect. And at higher volumes the sound tended to get muddy. I think not supporting a high definition bluetooth sound codex is a strange oversight on Google's part. Setting the bass boost in the dedicated Android apps helps with the lows but I was missing the sparkle in the highs that gives you the dynamic range you expect in in-ear headphones at this price level. I ended up keeping bass boost off since it does affect overall clarity in the volume levels that sounded best for me. I will say the actual stereo separation was very good. I used the large eartips to get a good seal and prevent the Buds from falling out. Three eartip sizes are provided with the Buds. The fit for me using the large eartips was good but I would have liked a bigger selection to choose from. The two smaller eartips didn’t work for me and couldn’t hold the Buds in my ears. Since sound quality and comfort are very unique to each person it can’t be the two single features that define these Buds. One outstanding feature is the Buds case. It is quite attractive and feels very good in the hand. I easily got five hours of battery life playing music and taking calls. This left me with around 15% of the reported battery left before it was back in the case for recharging. The case supports a quick charge to the Buds so a 10 minute charge should give you another 2 hours of listening. I like that the case uses a type C USB cable and also supports wireless charging. Another outstanding feature is the touch controls which I found to work very well. Because of the design of the Buds the touch controls are very easy to access. You might need a little time to get used to them but simple gestures like swipe and tap worked flawless for me. Other Buds I have tried also might support some of these features but the Pixel Buds just seemed to work very well for me with just a little practice. The paring process was very quick and easy on my Galaxy S10. And once paired I was taken to the Google app store to download the dedicated Pixel Bud app. There you have a lot of control over most of the Buds features. It should be no surprise these Buds work well with Google’s Assistant. And the app gives you very good control over how you want to interact with the Assistant including removing that as a permission or managing its notifications. The Buds themselves have a unique look. I have the Quite Mint color which is an interesting color and they also come in, Clearly White, Almost Black and Oh So Orange, and no, I didn’t make these names up. One of the features I was most interested in is the real time language translation. I travel internationally and I am looking forward to putting this feature to more use. In my testing it seems to work very well and with a little practice I think this will be a great tool and a truly killer feature. I struggled with this review simply because the Pixel Buds are just amazing when you sum up the features available here which I can only touchon. You have full access to Google’s AI, a great physical design and phone companion and although I am not as impressed with the sound as I would like it is not bad. With my prior experience with in-ear headphones the sound can improve over time. I have found that early reviews of sound quality can be deceiving as expectations can be high. But later you may find the sound improves and you wonder how you got it so wrong. One thing is for sure, the Google Pixel Buds are an amazing bit of technology that provides a load of useful features you can use everyday.

Simple consumer 4K monitor with Dell quality
on September 22, 2020
Posted by: Reddog
from Tomball, TX
Dell calls their S2721QS a lifestyle-inspired monitor. I am not sure what exactly that means but for most general consumers this is a very nice desktop monitor. The monitor is based on IPS screen technology. What that means to most people is that it has very good viewing angles and color. IPS is my preferred desktop monitor screen technology but it does lack in the deep blacks of other screen technologies. I don’t think that is a problem for desktop use but it might be an issue for critical movie watching. Although to get a better picture quality you have few choices and will have to pay quite a bit more. Generally other than a professional color monitor this screen is perfect for most users. One thing I really like about many Dell monitors and this one is the adjustability of the stand for height, swivel and angle. Not all monitors that have this versatility and its looks and works very well. The monitor screen image is sharp and the colors are very appealing. The monitor has two HDMI connections, a display port connection and an audio line out port. All of which makes this very easy to setup. It comes with a single HDMI cable in the box. The monitor is not targeted for gamers although Dell does claim it is compatible with AMD FreeSync. This is a 60Hz monitor and that is just fine for normal desktop use but gamers do benefit from a faster screen. The claimed response time is 8ms which is just fine for all but the most critical gamer. Yes you can game on this monitor just fine. It has very thin bezels, looks very nice, has great colors and one of the best monitor stands available. This monitor will suit most consumer lifestyles so I assume that was their intent. This is a very nice addition to any home office and should please most users. Just be warned 4K is a very high screen resolution so the text and fonts can appear very small. This can be a shock to some users but once you get used to it the available screen real-estate you get in 4K is a big benefit. Just be aware you can increase the percent of screen magnification so you can be comfortable without straining your eyes. This is done using the Windows system settings under display.

Attractive addition to almost any kitchen

KitchenAid - Digital Countertop Oven with Air Fry - Black Matte
The KitchenAid Air Fry is a neat compact air fryer that has a very classy look to go along with its very nice build quality. I really like the look of this Fryer with its minimum bezels and glass front door. There is a real nice feel when closing the front door and this carries over to the clean layout of the controls. Overall this is a very nice small package. Included with the Fryer is a broil pan with its own rack, a larger basket and one main rack. This is a compact oven with one main fan and doesn’t take up much counter space. There is so much that this Fryer can do it is easy to just use it each day and not use our bigger oven. Which is very nice since cleanup here is way easier than our regular oven. It is a regular oven, air fryer, a toaster oven and convection baking oven. And this brings up one of my main complaints which is a lack of instructions. For those used to modern Air Fryers this maynot be a problem but for new users a recipe book would have been a nice addition. The controls are simple enough and for very simple meals it's mostly a set and forget to get going. But a little help on the more advanced meals would have been a nice value add. My only other complaint is the fan is a bit noisy. Not too much that it takes away from the whole package but enough that you will hear it. The final results you will get with this oven will get better after you learn which mode you want to use and the cooking time you select. It has preset defaults that help get you going so that is very helpful. All it takes is a bit of practice but the end results can be very good. Air Fryers tend to get hotter near the fan so it can burn slightly at the back of the oven. What you find is this is just how they work and doesn’t really take away from the quality you will get. The more you use it and get used to it the better results you can expect. I think this is a great addition that updates most kitchens not just because it looks so nice but it really helps to make quick great tasting meals.

Best entry level racing wheel available today
on August 27, 2020

Logitech - G923 Racing Wheel and Pedals for Xbox One and PC - Black
The Logitech G923 Driving Wheel is probably the best entry level driving wheel you can purchase today. There are lower cost driving wheels available but none that provide the overall value and features you find in the G923. It is a very good option for use with both the Xbox and PC and there is also a PS4 version. The primary difference being the button options you would have available on the wheel itself. The build quality is very good with the leather clad steering wheel being especially nice. The wheel and petals are easy to setup and have almost universal support from virtually any driving title you might use it with. This includes simple fun arcade titles to the most serious simulations currently available. The Logitech software support is excellent and fits right in with their G Hub utility. There are a few things about the wheel and petals to consider. I found the TRUEFORCE feedback to be a bit harsher than I expected coming from an older G27 wheel. But it was very good at communicating the road surface and how the car was handling which is what you want the wheel to do. It’s a very small difference from the G27 but it did feel very detailed depending on the driving titles I was playing. I would have liked the wheel to be a little bigger as I felt a bit cramped but that’s a minor gripe. My biggest complaint for the wheel and pedal kit was the way the brake pedal felt. Logitech is claiming a progressive feel for the brake pedal. To me it just never seemed to communicate back to me the way the wheel does. I do think they could have done a bit more here. There are mods you can get to improve the feel of the braking but that shouldn’t be necessary and mostly isn’t. Still if you’re in the market to equip your PC or console with a driving wheel you really cannot go wrong with the G923. I would look to get it on sale since at full price it does start to get close to some other options depending on your budget. You will find that the Logitech G923 is an excellent choice to make any of your driving games or sims a much better experience. For the entry level user this is an especially good value since you can grow and get better and be very competitive. It is amazing how many of the top sim drivers are just fine using the Logitech driving wheels even against drivers using much more expensive setups.

Philips Norelco - Nose Trimmer - Black/Silver
The Philips Norelco nose trimmer is a compact battery operated trimmer that works very well. It is easy to use and I found it to be very effective in helping with my grooming needs. I especially liked the attachments for trimming the eyebrows. There are two attachment size options and they do a very good job of safely trimming near the eyes. It is very quick and takes no time at all to use. The same can be said for both the fine trimmer and the nose trimmer. It is easy to swap attachments back and forth and they all work very well. I was also glad to have the included travel pouch although I think it is probably the biggest disappointment in all of the included accessories. Still it is helpful to have so I was glad it was included. I didn’t like that included instructions since they are all on a one page sheet of paper and it's kind of klugy to unfold and read. I would have preferred to have them in a small booklet but they do tell you everything you need to know and once you start using the kit you won’t need them later anyway. I think it is safe to expect many years of service from this trimmer set and I have been very satisfied with all of the Philips products I have used.

Grill and brown food to tasty perfection all-year-round with virtually no smoke thanks to the Philips Smoke-less Indoor BBQ Grill. Advanced infrared technology and special reflectors guide heat to the grid for delicious, evenly grilled food. The drip tray underneath remains cool so there is up to 80% less smoke and minimal splattering when cooking.

did it char like an outdoor grill? Thinking about getting this since we can no longer have outdoor grills in our complex.

You could burn your food with this grill. But it less likely than an outdoor grill. Since it has one temperature you learn how not to to burn your food. There is no flame and since the grill is used inside its probably right next to you as your making the rest of the meal. That helps to keep track of the cooking unlike an outside grill.

Upgrade your home theater system with this NVIDIA SHIELD Android console. It lets you stream 4K HDR movies and TV shows and play hundreds of PC-quality games via GeForce NOW or Android streaming. The 16GB of internal memory stores your favorite multimedia files, and the voice search feature of this NVIDIA SHIELD Android console lets you access content immediately.

I will be sending it to South Korea, should there be any issues?

It should work. It's just a streaming HDMI device with is a world standard. I don't know about the power supply but it probably works with right adapter for the plug format in that country.

Can I use tasker app on shild?

It is not available on the play store for Android TV but you maybe able to side load it. If you don't know what side loading is than using Tasker might be a bigger challenge. Anyway it can't hurt to try and a little research on the net should answer your question in more detail.

This looks a lot like a console, is it efficient with games like World of Warcraft, League of Legends, or Hearthstone?

You can stream these games directly from your PC if you have a good home network and your PC has a newer Nvidia video card.

Does this device play all android market games, or is it limited to certain types? Specifically Walking War Robots?

There are games in the Google play store that are just for the Android TV. On the Shield Nvidia also has a play store with many older and some new games. Finally you can stream PC games directly to your Shield if you also have an Nvidia video card. So there are many options but except for streaming from the PC don't expect to play the latest AAA titles.

With the integrated Kickstand, the ability to run desktop software and touch apps, and a full-size USB port, Surface 3 is a perfect mix of innovation and practicality. As thin and light as it is, you'll be amazed at all you can achieve with this device. Now for a limited time, Surface 3 tablets include 1 year of Microsoft Office 365 Personal (a $69.99 value) plus OneDrive cloud storage. Office activation required within 6 months of Windows activation date. Offer valid while supplies last.

Which is better for me, a surface 2 or 3 tablet, or a 2 in 1 Surface 3?

I have studied so many different options in the Microsoft surface and microsoft surface pro line and am still confused. My main objective is to effortlessly handle powerpoint presentations professionally without having to stand near a computer. I would also like to take family pictures or videos. Lastly, I would like to handle emails, do business research, store files for my small business, and work while I'm on the go on airplanes and in hotels.
I have a regular PC and an old laptop at home with Windows 7 operating system, and I have an IPhone. I own Microsoft Office 365, so I do not have to have a computer that has all the Office programs already installed. I am trying to save money, but I do not want to cut myself short for creating, storing and presenting all my PowerPoint presentations. I may even start making webinars. Please help.
The Surface Pro 3 is probably your better choice. You won't have any issues with it doing any office tasks. The Surface 3 would also work but for a business environment I think the Pro is a better choice. It also has Win 8 pro which can support encryption if you think that might be useful to you. It also has a bigger hard drive option then the Surface 3.

Can I watch Dish anywhere on a Surface 3 128GB

As long as you have a good enough connection and an active account with Dish it should work.

I want to use the surface 3 to work from home. Can I connect dual monitors? If so, how?

Since it has a micro display port I think you could daisy change other display port monitors. I know it does work with my 4K monitor at full resolution but at 30hz.

Can I use 4G on it?

Is it ready for 4G? If not can I do or buy anything so I can use 4G.
I think there will be a 4G version in the future. But you can always get a USB modem or use a separate hotspot device which is what I do. You connect to the hotspot with the wireless networking and it can work on any other device that supports a wireless connection.
