Monitors are a dime a dozen. At every turn there's another new monitor with higher refresh, different curvature, support for variable refresh technologies, different sizes, you name it.
It's become less common to have a great monitor that really does everything you need without the buzz and cost of the higher end models that many people really won't use the features of.
This Asus TUF monitor is just that. For those of us with limited desk space, the 23.8 inch monitor doesn't consume vast amounts of it while still having the beauty of a 180hz gaming refresh rate and support for freesync. Setup was simple as expected out of the box and i appreciate the joystick toggle on the back for adjusting settings. It really has everything you need and nothing you don't.
My recent playtime obsession has been palworld, but whether playing something simple like that or something more inherently demanding like COD, this monitor delivers. I have mounted it on an arm on the desk to utilize my space as best as can be and even that was easy. The monitor and it's freesync capabilities were immediately recognized and the image quality is outstanding.
I greatly recommend this to anyone in the market for a great performing gaming monitor with limited desk space looking for a solid brand.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What can I say? It's Corsair.

Maybe I'm a little bit of a fanboi, but I love me some Corsair, and this keyboard doesn't disappoint. I've never really had a 75% keyboard before, I've seen many people use them (and smaller) and wondered about the draw to them. To me it was always basically a laptop form factor keyboard but at a desk scale and I didn't really get it. I'm a believer now.
It comes packaged as most keyboards do, simple thin box and that's really all that is needed. In the box is the keyboard itself, a USB dongle, cable and tool to remove the switches as they are swappable. The keyboard itself touts as being compatible with basically everything (Windows, Linux, Android, Apple, PS, XBox, and a partridge in a pear tree) and while I don't have ALL of those and while I do primarily use it with Windows, I can confirm it works well with what I do have (Android, XBox, Windows).
Having a small-ish mechanical gaming keyboard is rather nice, not contending with the space of the number pad that I dont really use for anything besides inputting passwords frees up some of my valuable desk space and that makes it worthwhile to me. The backlighting is cool, the keys are responsive and quiet, and overall the use is great. I would recommend using the USB dongle on compatible devices for gaming as the response is best with it. That's not to say bluetooth is bad, but wired or the dongle is going to be faster than bluetooth.
Overall it's a great keyboard, particularly for those not needing the number pad, it's mechanical, it's quiet and it's Corsair.
I would recommend this to a friend!

It's ok, but not for the money

The smart home segment is getting pretty crowded, doesn't matter if it's locks, cameras, sensors, you name it. Aqara (read: Xiaomi) has a handful of new devices that are showing up in this smart home segment, and for the most part they seem to ride the budget end of the spectrum (even if the pricing does not).
Enter the Aqara U100 Smart Lock. It looks a lot like most smart locks out there, contains similar features, though it requires the included zigbee adapter (USB powered) and is powered by AA batteries (which is common for smart locks), I do appreciate that it is compatible with Matter (for those of you that dont know, Matter is the new single 'protocol' for lack of a better word, that is designed to combine all of the smart home devices across the spectrum and has been built by the major players (Amazon, etc) to prevent this issue where we have so many competing standards (Alexa, Homekit, Google Home, Zigbee, Zwave, etc).
Unboxing is straightforward, the lock, the hardware, the batteries, all included. It looks and feels like most options in the segment. Installation was straightforward for a lock as one would hope, and that's fine and good.
But when it comes to setting it up with the Aqara app, that's where the good stops. The Aqara app is atrocious. It looks identical to some other cheap branded smart home devices, it seems it was either developed by the same developers or it's the same company. Either way, getting the app to see the device isn't necessarily difficult, but connecting it to the device can be a challenge. Also interestingly about this device it uses the Zigbee to communicate to the hub, though 2.4GHz wifi from the hub. Do yourself a favor and turn off your 5GHz band while setting this up as the app gets confused if there is a 5GHz and 2.4GHz band with the same name and tends to ignore it. If you can manage to get it to be seen, at that point things are somewhat straightforward. The featureset looks decent, but the app is just not great.
In all honesty when compared to some of the major competitors out there that have been in the locking business for longer than most of us have been alive, this is just not the best option. It's an average smart lock that needs a hub which is uncommon these days, requires AA batteries and it is not rechargeable. The app is pretty bad, and the price is not any better than the competitors.
I'd say stick with the known brands, which tends to have more features, more support and better apps.

Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 uses cutting-edge millimeter-wave radar technology, which can accurately detect the presence of people even with slight movements. This technology ensures continuity and stability of the smart device. It also has the function of zone positioning, which allows for the automation of different conditions in different zones, such as beds and tables. One space can now be divided into up to 30 small zones and recognize up to five targets (Multi-person Detection). It can also control other smart home devices through ecosystems such as Apple Home to achieve wider applications. It features functions such as human fall recognition, sleep monitoring and a built-in light sensor. Likewise, it is a great helper that can truly combine the diversity of the user's home life and realize the automation of different personalities.

Not a great device
on February 25, 2024
Posted by: Beradon
This is the second of the set of Aqara products that I've obtained, and unfortunately the story does not improve here. I will say this is the first product of this type I've ever owned, being a motion sensor with some interesting capabilities (fall alerting), and while the concept is neat, the implementation needs work.
To start, the packaging is straightforward, just the sensor in a box, it is plugged in via a USB cable that's included (though I would argue that maybe an outlet version would be a good addition, or maybe one that screws into a light bulb socket).
Setting it up is not great, the Aqara app is basically the same awful version of another smart home app (Tuya) that I have on my phone, just focused on Aqara instead, it's difficult to get rolling. Yes, the app sees the device, but pairing it to your WIFI system is a chore. Allow me to make a suggestion, if your system has 2.4 and 5GHz options, either turn off the 5GHz band while you set this up, or force your phone onto the 2.4GHz spectrum to get the device to see it, unfortunately if your phone is connected to 5GHz, it prevents the device from recognizing the 2.4GHz spectrum of your WIFI despite supporting it.
Once you manage to get it paired with the app, there's a few steps for setup including the aforementioned fall sensor. It's "ok", seems to do the job, although there's a good deal of false positives, hopefully with some firmware updates this will improve, but I do not have high hopes.
It might be cool to use this for some IFTTT type functionality for entering or leaving a room or your home, but beyond that, it isn't a great device.
I'm not aware of other similar devices on the market but if they exist, I have to hope they are better than this, as it seems somewhat limited in it's capability and usefulness.

Many better options exist.

I'm no stranger to smart home tech, including having used at least 4 different vendors for smart doorbells, this one unfortunately rides near the bottom of that list, and there were significant features on other vendors I just didn't love, this managed to lower those expectations even further.
To start, unboxing is straightforward, the chime, some batteries, the doorbell itself, a wire, some hardware and a thin manual.
Initially I couldn't even figure out how to open the back of the doorbell, sure the rubber flap on the side over the screw was a little obvious, but sliding it down was not, and the manual has zero information on using the doorbell itself, instead opting for a QR code to give you access to the full manual... I'm not sure why they bothered printing a manual at all if they expect you to scan the QR code. At the very least the printed manual, if included at all, should have been at least 'installation' or 'quick start' of which it was neither.
Once I figured out how to open the battery compartment (more on that in a second) installing the included alkaline batteries was simple enough. I do have concerns with using alkaline batteries in this as I've used them in smart doorbells and door locks in the past, only to eventually have them leak, likely due to the heat of South Carolina in the summer. If you do go the battery route, then get some AA NIMH or Lithium batteries to avoid this, they arent expensive these days and it'll give you a quick rechargeable method to this doorbell.
Linking it to the app was 'ok' in my opinion. What I do find interesting is that despite the Aqara brand, this is another Xiaomi device, and the app looks and feels identical to two other apps on my phone, the Tuya smart home app, and honestly I cant even remember the other, but it's irrelevant. I don't know if they all hired the same off-the-shelf companies to make these apps or are indeed the same company themselves (completely possible), but the app itself is pretty much garbage, just as the two identical apps I have on my phone from previous chinese-made tech. It gets the job done, but only barely.
While adding the doorbell, you need to have the chime plugged in and the batteries in the doorbell itself first, then go through setup. The doorbell will only connect to 2.4GHz networks, which are not always shown in the app (if your phone is connected to the 5GHz version of your network assuming you're running WIFI 5, 6, 6E or 7, disconnect from it, or the app will assume it cant be used as a 2.4GHz network as well, then refresh it a lot until it sees your 2.4GHz network).
Once connected, the doorbell 'works' and that's a win, the features of recording to the SDCard (which is kept in the chime by the way) is cool, it does have a feature to record to the cloud for a fee if you want, and in general the unit does work, it's just kinda 'not great'.
There are two ways to mount the unit to the wall, which I appreciate, but neither of them are secure. You can either stick it to the wall using the pre-installed peal and stick, or using the provided hardware. The back plate I mentioned before is removeable with a single easily accessible screw behind a little rubber flap on the side (which also means, if you have a wall on that side, you'll never be able to access that screw again, this is why most smart doorbells have screws or releases on the bottom). Sure it has a 'tamper proof' switch behind the unit itself to let you know if someone steals it, but they'll be long gone with it before you get to the door, oh well.
The video quality is 'decent', definitely better than my previous doorbell, but it's also 5 years old now, so I would only hope that there's been some progression in technology since that point. It's still limited to 1080p which is 'entry level' quality in my opinion.
So why did I give it 2 stars instead of 1? Well, it does work, if you can get past all the initial hassles and understand that you just don't have a great device.
All in all, it's just not good. Setup isn't good, the security isn't good, the app isn't good, the quality isn't good. Just go buy something else.

Best Xbox Controller I've ever used
on December 27, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
So like many people I've owned a number of Xbox controllers, I tend to stick with the Microsoft branded ones because I've just preferred the look and feel and design of them the most. But with this one I decided to change things up a bit. Let's just say I'm glad I did.
So I gave this controller to my son, but suffice to say he's not had much of a chance to use it because I've been using it. The look and feel of it is, in a word, premium. I love the design, the ability to set up things exactly as I want, even the way the sticks move while oddly different than a standard Xbox controller, is wholly familiar and just feels right. I love the charging dock, not having to plug in or change batteries in the controller just feels right. The screen, the options. I could go on and on.
I've used it now on my Xbox and my PC and allow me to make a couple of recommendations. First: update the software and the firmware, it'll give you a much better experience. Second, use the USB adapter. Yes it supports Bluetooth but the adapter just feels smoother. I know that's a bummer to take up a USB port on the Xbox, but it's worth it. Third, take the time to set up the screen and the programmable action buttons if you need them, they can really give you an edge.
All in all this is easily the best Xbox controller on the market if you keep those things in mind. I really recommend it to anyone that wants the best controller based gameplay experience that Windows or the Xbox has to offer

Best I've used, bar none

I cant tell you over the years how many routers I've been through, each one has had varying degrees of tenure in my household based on how feature rich they are and how they perform. I've never really cared about ease of setup because I'm a network engineer, this is what I do, so when I come across one that has the trifecta of ease, features and performance, we're talking about a premium level device.
To start, the box has a premium look and feel, not something you'd usually associate with TP-Link, although I will say their more recent offerings have definitely stepped this up has they've released devices that appeal to a higher-end croud, not just those who are trying to hack them and install something like DDWRT on them (speaking of which, these do not support that, sorry to those of you who like custom roms).
The 3 devices in the box are basically identical, just pick one to act as the 'router' and hook it to your WAN connection (in my case, gig fiber) and the others will function as satellites as you go through the setup. Speaking of setup, it's super streamlined. There's no 'ok reset this, reset that' just trying to get the app to see everything and get it online, it's one of the few that I've run across that just 'works'. In the app you're also met with a number of different configuration options, from reserved IP addressing, parental controls, device naming, MAC address tracking, range and speed testing, etc. Each piece works as you would expect, you can granularly control individual devices being allowed on or off the network, or control when the network will get cut off to a device (useful if you have kids that wont go to bed or study) among many other things. Really it's a well thought out app with a plethora of configuration options. Of course it has the standard allowing of ports through the firewall and all of that, so no worries there.
As far as performance is concerned, this is easily the fastest set I've run across. I've owned a few motherboards that are 2.5Gbps capable, but never had devices that supported it (even current-gen devices, this is not terribly common) but finally this one does. Not only does it support 2.5Gbps client connections, but if your house is wired for ethernet, they also support 2.5Gbps wired backhaul between satellites, which in a word, is a wonderful. There's few ISPs out there that can really utilize that to the home, but if you have any sort of in-house server or streaming devices (plex media server anyone?) then these will definitely not add any latency or performance concerns to that.
Coverage is excellent, being a 3 piece mesh system there are zero dead spots in my 3400 sqft home, and I imagine this could cover a space quite a lot larger than that. I unfortunately do not own any WiFi7 capable devices yet, but clearly I'm future-proofed against that with this system, and I intend to upgrade the WIFI card in my laptop as soon as I'm able.
All in all this is a wonderful mesh system, coverage is superb, performance is amazing, and it's well worth the cost. I would easily recommend this to anyone in the market for a high-end WIFI7 capable mesh system.

Arlo is good, not great
on November 28, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
This is not my first set of Arlo cameras, in fact, I've had a set of Arlo cameras for such a long time that I recently received an email from them telling me that the base unit was going end of life and that I'd need to replace it (very first gen set of Arlo cameras). I have enjoyed the Arlo cameras I have, in fact I like them so much I've recommended them to many family and friends. But that recommendation always comes with a caveat. You kinda need the subscription. Back when I first got the Arlo cameras, some of the features like activity zones were added for free, then they removed that and made it part of the subscription, where it now remains. Same goes for saving any sort of video timeline. Be that as it may, this is more about the cameras than the service.
Arlo's 'essential' line of cameras is aimed to be a 'little' more affordable than their pro line, they tend to be slimmed up in capability while still offering you all the things you need to get a DIY-type security system in place. For the most part, they succeed. The setup goes much as you'd expect, open the app, let it search for the camera, add it to the app, rinse and repeat. I actually much prefer the base-station design because it just seems less cumbersome and temperamental during setup specifically, but once you get past that part, they tend to run pretty much without fail.
As for quality, I will say these are quite nice, both in terms of build quality and image quality of the videos. They may not be quite the 4k level of their 'pro' line, but when you're watching it on your phone in a 2-inch window, does 4k really matter? I'd argue no. A quick note worth mentioning, these are touted as outdoor cameras, and while yes of course you could use them indoors, I'd recommend if you plan on using them outdoor, get the solar panel so you arent having to take them down to charge. It's an added expense but the convenience is unbeatable, it's one of the things that Arlo has really done better than many of their competitors.
Once the cameras are placed, usage is fairly straightforward, they have manual alarms, 2-way audio and color night vision (which is rather cool, especially coming from the older black-and-white only night vision versions of my older cameras). If you do go with the subscription, be prepared to adjust your activity zones and sensitivity, as it may take a little finesse to get it from sending you too many false positives depending on the environment that you set up the cameras in.
All in all, it's another good product from Arlo, the caveats being that you really do need the subscription to fully benefit from their capabilities (something some of their competitors really dont require, thus the reduction in one star on the rating), and that value-add of buying a solar panel for each camera really is worth it.

A cut above
on November 28, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I've owned many wireless earbuds over the years, from many tiers of quality and price. I've come to settle on my favorites in terms of affordability, comfort and quality, and to get me to stray from them takes quite a monumental effort. Of the ones I prefer, I've owned at least 5 different sets. Now I have the Denon PerL Pro Earbuds and I have to say... I'm a convert.
To take someone like me who is so set in their ways and preferences to move to something entirely different is no small feat. But from the packaging to the fit to the build quality and the customization options, I find that these truly have no equal.
They start much like any other true wireless headset, nestled in their charging case. They come with multiple ear gels and the type of fitting piece that allows you to use the curve of your ear rather than the inside of your ear for fit, this may be a preference to some people (I know I used to greatly dislike any form of 'canal bud' as I routinely called these types. Find your comfort, put them in and move forward. One point worth noting, these are a little bit larger outside the ear than a lot of wireless earbuds, so they are definitely noticeable.
A simple pairing later and load up the app and you're greeted with what really makes these stand out. The level of customization that is available, whether from the equalizer, the ability to multipoint connect, allow ambient sound through (social mode, as they call it) and many other premium type options that many of the lower-end headsets just dont have are available. I do find it interesting that you can make multiple profiles, I suppose as a single individual you could do that to make different soundscapes for different types of audio (gaming, movies, music) but I can't imagine myself ever sharing a set of earbuds with another person, so profiles in regards to multiple users seems an oddity, though that seems to be how they are marketed, with their sound profile creation... A strange thing to me.
Once the initial sound profile is set up, there is just a matter of use and switching to noise cancellation or not as you prefer. I have to say that Denon has done something of a masterwork with these earbuds. The long battery life is amazing (probably why the size is notable) and the ability to quick charge from the case in just a few minutes is astounding (worth it to me who spends most of my work day on the phone).
Really, it's difficult to find fault with these, and again aside from the larger size than many, I really can't find any, even the size thing is not worth deducting from them, they are just that good. All in all, if you're in the market for a premium set of earbuds, these are the ones, consider no others.

Fast, high quality printer
on November 19, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I've owned a brother all-in-one for the last 6 or so years and being in the market to upgrade I was wanting to keep Brother in mind due to the experience I've had with my previous one. The Brother HL-L3280CDW is exactly what I hoped for, a full featured, fast, high quality color laser with wireless capabilties.
Packaging is much as you'd expect from any printer these days, comes in a standard box, packed in foam with necessary documentation and a power cable. The printer itself is fairly compact when compared to many other color lasers of similar capability, just as all Brother lasers tend to be. This one uses the new L229 cartridges which is the next iteration up from their previous line which has had a long and noteworthy existence in their previous generation of laser printers, so there's a good chance this toner line will be used in multiple of their lasers as well.
Connecting it to my wireless network and having it found by my PC was nearly a no brainer. Navigate the menus on the screen, attach to the network and search for the printer in Windows. I downloaded the Brother printer drivers and software, but the default printing capabilities of Windows 11 was able to function with it without having to install additional drivers if you didn't desire to do so.
Printing is fast and high quality, as the title suggests, I'd say it's a fair amount faster than my previous Brother color laser, so it's good to see. Warm up time seems to be a touch faster as well.
All in all, while this may just be a printer and not an all-in-one, if you're in the market for a wireless color laser with good quality prints, this really would be the workhorse quality device you're looking for. I heartily recommend it.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Jabra Elite 7 Pro true wireless earbuds have MultiSensor Voice™ technology, which combines 4 powerful microphones, an advanced Voice Pick Up (VPU) sensor in each Bluetooth earbud, and unique Jabra algorithms. Automatically activating when it’s windy, Jabra MultiSensor Voice™ uses bone conduction technology to transmit your voice through vibrations in your jaw, for wind noise cancellation and clear calls anywhere. Thanks to the adjustable Active Noise Cancellation, the ultra-compact earphones with rich and powerful sound lets you fully immerse yourself in your music. Multipoint connects to 2 devices at once, lets you seamlessly switch between devices, and is available as a firmware update via the Jabra Sound+ app. Also test your hearing in the Jabra Sound+ app, and tailor your music to suit your individual hearing profile. Hear your surroundings while on a call with the HearThrough technology - use left or right earbud alone with Bluetooth Mono Mode - Each offers up to 8 hours battery and 30 hours with the case.

Is the Elite 7 Pro "vented" like the AirPod Pro and 85t? I returned the 75t becasue I didn't like the plugged ear feeling.

They are not, since they are noise canceling earbuds they create close to a seal in your ear to prevent sound leakage. That said, they do have a hear-through option in the jabra app which greatly alleviates that feeling of 'plugged' because you get sound from around you through the headset instead of that blocked up feeling. So if you choose to, turn that on and it will help a lot.

Convert your digital pictures into analog prints using this Polaroid Lab. The I-Type and 600 series film let you print photos instantly while the built-in LiIon battery is long-lasting and rechargeable via USB. This Polaroid Lab is compatible with iPhones operating with iOS 11 or newer and Android 7 and above.

What size is the actual photo that is printed? And can multiple phones be used on it?

The lab uses polaroid originals type-i film which is 4.2x3.5"

You can use as many phones on it as you want

Clean those hard-to-reach places in your home with this Shark cordless vacuum. Its bristle brush deep-cleans any carpet, and the additional soft-roll brush pulls in larger particles from wood floors while polishing them. The rechargeable, high-capacity Li-Ion battery keeps this Ninja cordless vacuum's DuoClean Technology ready for tough cleaning chores.

I need a lightweight vacuum for medical reasons which would you recommend? Also one that is powerful!

It's not the lightest vacuum in the stick-vac market, but it's not heavy by any means. If you can hold the motor in your off-hand or set the motor on the ground then it is far lighter than any other stick vac. It has great power, and the dual-head system makes it more efficient at picking up things than any single head vac I've seen in the segment. That said, a Dyson V8/V10 or some of Shark's other stick vacs is going to be lighter overall than this one.

Keep your floors spotless with this Samsung POWERbot Slim robot vacuum. Its sensors and mapping system automatically adapt to the pattern of floors in the home and effectively avoid obstacles. This Alexa-compatible Samsung POWERbot Slim robot vacuum provides maximum cleaning coverage including edges and corners thanks to its sophisticated edge-cleaning technology.

Is it gentle on hardwood floors ? Concerned with wheels if they are hard plastic... Thanks!

The brush itself seems relatively soft, and the wheels are rubberized. That said, I dont use it on my hardwood, though the instruction manual does discuss using it on hardwood.

Anyone successful in connecting Amazon Alexa to VR1AM7040WG PowerBot R7040 ?

I have not been able to, as even when it has completed the wifi setup configuration, the app believes itself to not be connected to the vacuum.
