smart unit, smart air
on May 10, 2021

Right in the middle of allergy season and having moved into a new house I immediately identified indoor air pollution as a potential issue. As being highly allergic to dust and seasonal pollen clean air is always a priority for me. I have a more expensive air purifier in my bedroom and have seen immediate improvement. I wanted to bring fresh air to my larger living area which is an open floor plan consisting of a living room/kitchen, dining area with 9ft high ceilings, a gas stove and fireplace. Getting a Filtrete - 310 Sq. Ft. Smart Air Purifier which has the capacity to filter large rooms was my goal. The unit was easy to setup and only require unwrapping the filter media and downloading a mobile app (in my case an iPhone). After unwrapping the unit and opening it up to install the filter, I turned the unit on. I was impressed by all the “smart” features built into this unit and the easy setup process which allowed me to connect the unit at first via Bluetooth then via Wi-Fi for easy remote access at home or away. The unit has various fan speeds, a timer function, filter % left, light panel on/off, an air quality digital display, along with a multicolored LED which lights green for good, yellow for fair and red for poor air quality. What is pretty unique is the functionality of the mobile app and nearly the same information in realtime on the top panel of the unit. The unit is pretty accurate in measuring indoor air quality, assessing the air quality changes during cooking and when multiple people were in the room. Also in the app is the ability to display air quality on an hourly, daily or monthly scale, additionally it also shows tracking by pollutant size. Of course, when the unit detects lower quality air which requires filtering it kicks up the fan speed and takes in and filters more room air via vents on the side of the unit (each of which have a washable prefilter) then filter the air through the main smart HEPA filter which is rated to capture 99.97% of airborne particles. Things like allergens, dust, lint, mold spores, bacteria, viruses and pet dander are no match for this system.
Needless to say, this unit does a great job filtering your air and effectively measures air quality with one of the best air quality and unit control apps I have seen in a smart air filtering unit.
Pros:
- Great job filtering air
- Mobile App is the best I have seen for controlling and monitoring air quality
- Easy to replace the HEPA filter
- App can integrate with PurpleAir and Speck Air Quality monitors
- compatible with other smart products like Alexa, Goggle assistant, Siri
Cons:
- At higher speeds the unit can make quite a bit of noise.
- Humidifiers trip up the particle sensor.

Great sounding earbuds
on April 30, 2021

These Skullcandy earbuds connect to your Apple device via a lightening connector, with the usual on/off, volume, multifunction control block of towards the right ear bud. I was actually pretty surprised by the clarity of sound provided by these earbuds, while listening to my goto set of tunes I noticed sounds that I have not heard since I used higher end, closed ear headphones. These are comfortable to wear and since they are wired you don’t have to worry about inconsistency with connections or battery life. Other size replacement buds are provided fir different size ear canals. I am very happy with these earbuds as they sound great and are built with a high level of quality.
Pros:
- awesome sound
- wired connection
- no batteries to charge
- supplied alternative fitting earbuds
Cons:
- none at this time

effective hand vac with a UV disinfecting light
on April 20, 2021

The RAYCOP - GO UV+ Ultra-Portable Handheld Allergen Vacuum seems like a good idea on paper. A portable, rechargeable hand vac which has a UV light to disinfect surfaces. Not sure how effective the UV light feature is as from what I understand of the science, the light needs to illuminate the surface for 10 seconds or so, which is not really practical when cleaning most surfaces. The light will turn off if you move the UV head over a surface too quickly. As for the vacuum, it works well on my couch and picks up crumbs and pet hair (when my grand cat visits). The filter system is HEPA class, removable and washable, however the dust cup is small and does not have much capacity. The unit is modular and comes in a case which stores each of the components, putting it together is self-explanatory and easy. The appeal of this unit is being able to travel with it, practicality is in question as it would take up substantial amount of space in your carry on. Since the unit has a three-cell lithium-ion battery, you could not pack this in a checked luggage and TSA may look at you a bit funny as this makes it down the belt as you travel through security.
In any case it is a quality vacuum, the UV light might convince me to bring it along when traveling by car as it could be potentially useful in hotel rooms in a Covid world. The run time on the battery seemed accurate, although on the highest suction setting the speed of the motor audibly seemed to slow after about five minutes of uninterrupted use, I will have to monitor run time moving forward. The unit takes about three hours to recharge using the supplied proprietary charger (USB-C might have been a better charging choice).
Pros:
- Great concept, hand vac with a UV disinfecting light
- Modular, design is a case study in engineering – very D*son like
- Rechargeable, decent battery runtime
Cons:
- UV light may be more gimmicky, then practical
- Not as portable as you would think.

another unique vacuum from Dyson

The Dyson Omni glide cordless bare floor vacuum continues the winning streak Dyson has with cleaning appliances. The unit is slim, lightweight, and highly maneuverable with a powered cleaner head which has powered soft rollers (which are removable as well as washable). It is a match made in heaven if you have hard floors as it glides (hence the name) across them picking up dry material or dirt effortlessly. Since the powered head swivels all the way around, with the help of casters which swivel 360 degrees really comes in handy. The neck also allows you to lay the vacuum flat (almost like planking). As with most vacuums these days it provides heap class filtering to trap dust and allergens, so they just don’t get recycled back into the air. The motor has two speeds, normal and max for differing cleaning situations. The unit is rechargeable and includes an AC adapter which can attached to the wall to act as a recharging mount. The lithium-ion batteries are contained in the handle and take about 3.5 hours to charge for twenty minutes of run time. There is a blue led light at the top of the handle which indicates charging status, and the battery pack can be removed if it they need to be replaced in the future.
The unit was easily assembled as part of three separate pieces, you have to remove the middle piece to empty the dirt cup, a bit inconvenient but not a deal breaker. The middle piece (about 18 inches long) which essentially adds length to the unit can be removed to make the unit a quasi-hand held unit (although it is about two feet long so not sure I would consider it hand held).
Overall, the vacuum is super convenient and maneuverable and makes cleaning your hard floors easy.
Pros:
- It is a Dyson!
- Two-year warranty
- slim, lightweight, and highly maneuverable
- 99.99% of dust, particles and allergens are filtered out of the air exhaust.
- Two power modes
- also comes with an edge and brush attachments
Cons:
- Wife complained that the handle is a bit thick and uncomfortable to use if you have smaller hands (I did not have this issue). She mentioned this also is an issue for her with our other Dyson vacuum.
- Emptying a dirt canister requires two hands and a twist of the canister.
- Run time may be an issue for some.

speaker for the nerd in you
on March 23, 2021

The Denon Home 150 Wireless Speaker is a mono speaker with quality you would expect from Denon. The speaker is about the size of a coffee can, square with rounded edges and fabric covered on three sides, a panel up top with various touch controls (which are lights up when you activate the proximity sensor). The speaker consists of a one inch tweeter and a 3.5” bass driver with a pretty beefy magnet. On the back panel there is a connect button, Ethernet jack, USB plug, Aux in, Bluetooth connect button and a place to attach the power cord. Note on the last item, it does require power and cannot operate without being plugged in to AC power. There are a plethora connectivity options, including Bluetooth and WIFI – along with an ethernet jack. The unit also is compatible with Airplay 2 for connectivity to Apple Devices. The speaker direct connects to various music services, some of which offer high resolution sound. In addition, the unit also has the ability play and stream audio files from a USB drive you plug into the back of the unit. I found this capability interesting as it essentially makes the unit a little audio media server able to stream to DLNA clients (audio receivers, smart TVs and the VLC Player app I have on my AppleTV). I was also able to stream content from my Network Attached Storage (NAS). Really impressed with the capabilities and file formats it is able to play back including hi res FLAC audio files.
For a techno nerd like me, exploring the 98 page owner’s manual truly revealed all the capabilities of this device (unfair to just call in a speaker).
Now, to cut to the chase, all these features are great, but if the speaker does not excel in producing quality sound then the rest of it does not really matter. The sound is a bit punchy, bass heavy as others have commented, however in the HEOS app there are a few options you can use to tune the sound more to your liking, including a bass and treble EQ control. Frankly I would really like to see some more granular controls, however they suffice. There are some key settings which are buried in the mobile app which I did find made subtle differences in how the speaker sounded. One was “Speaker Placement” which had an impact on how “boomy” the speaker sounded and changed the emphasis on the low end response. Another was adjusting the Audio Quality from the default “Normal” setting to the high setting. This really seemed to bump up the audio reproduction, especially when playing high res formats. I can only conclude that at a high setting the network bandwidth usage of the device increases, which produce more dropouts, however I did not experience that issue.
The HEOS mobile app (iOS version tested) leaves a little to be desired, the menu system is a bit convoluted, and it encourages you to setup an account with Denon, so you can easily access all your streaming music services (after you provide login credentials), not sure about providing this type of info. I did use the Spotify app to direct connect to this speaker without an issue.
As for installation and setup, initially I had some issues with connecting to my local WIFI network. I had to try several times and had to reset the speaker back to factory settings. The speaker also received about 3 successive software updates which took about 10 minutes each to apply (not sure why you could not just jump to the most current version).
In conclusion, there was a lot to write about regarding this speaker, I didn’t even touch on the ability of this device to interact with the rest of the Denon ecosystem or the added voice assistant capabilities which came with later software updates. This is really an audiophile’s dream smart speaker and has a bit of everything, just seems you really need to be a tech nerd to fully realize the potential of the device, performance is not out of the box, it requires some tweaking, and this is a perfect case of “read the freaking manual”.
Pros:
- Audiophile level sound
- Plethora of connectivity options
- Support for High resolution audio services and files
- Built in media server that can be used to stream audio content to DLNA clients.
- USB plug
Cons,
- HEOS mobile app is a bit convoluted.
- A bit bass heavy out of the box (can be adjusted)
- Requires AC power, not meant to be portable

audiophile outdoor speaker setup
on March 13, 2021
Posted by: Bappy
from Raleigh, NC
Having moved into a new house with a small backyard, I was looking for outdoor, weatherproof speakers which could blend into the landscape. Having an unused Sonos Connect:Amp I decided to look to Sonos for an outdoor speaker solution. I never really took to the outdoor speakers which were bundled with my Connect:Amp since they were better suited for high mounting and perhaps put out a bit too much sound (if that is a thing). In my newer closely spaced neighborhood, they would not have been a good fit. So, in comes the Sonance - MAGROCKS2.1 - 2.1 Outdoor Rock Speaker System, which are charcoal grey colored, well-built and seem well suited to be able to handle the elements of just about any outdoor environment. I decided to place them in a semi-interior space (screened in 15’ x 20’ patio) due the level of effort (running two speaker wires of sufficient length to the subwoofer to support a truly yard like installation). Now I know this is not the typical use case for these types of speakers, but found that floor level placement was more suitable and I could hide satellite speakers in the corner without having to worry about mounting them.
The system arrives in a large box and with a large passive subwoofer and two satellite speakers which attach to the subwoofer via wires of fixed length. You run speaker wires (not supplied, since use cases may vary and you may need wiring which is rated for burial) from your amplifier or receiver to the passive/unpowered subwoofer. Unlike active subwoofers which often have a built-in amp, the passive version included in this setup does not. Unless you are going to splice additional wire to lengthen the distance of each speaker from the subwoofer, you are limited to the distance each of the satellite speakers can be separated from subwoofer. All the speaker connections are clip style, and you need connect wires from your amp into inputs on the bottom of the subwoofer and then attach the two satellites to the output connections also on the bottom of the subwoofer. I did not particularly care for the clip style connectors, but once you attach a supplied plate to cover the area where the wires connect, you should not have an issue with them falling out, besides the speakers are meant to be installed permanently in fixed locations.
How do these speakers sound is the main question, and for the most part I would say excellent. They output sound which is rich and clear, separation of the speakers from the subwoofer using the fixed leads from each of the satellite speakers yield a pretty good sound field. I have heard others not as pleased if they lengthened the distance between the satellite speakers by splicing additional wire to the existing leads (the speaker leads from each of the satellite speakers are hardwired internally so you cannot just replace the speaker wires with longer length versions). Again, the whole system yielded an “atmospheric”, pleasing sound field. However, if you are accustomed to booming bass from your subwoofer you may be disappointed with this setup, as it does not produce “booming” lows. I was able to compensate a bit for that by enabling the “loudness” setting in the Sonos App. You can do the same in just about any music app by accessing either the sound profiles or EQ and choosing ones which boosts low end.
Overall I am pleased with the system, although I installed it a bit differently than I originally intended taking an easier less permanent path. They sound great and as with any setup require a little tweaking to meet your individual sound preferences. I would say in typical outdoor use cases (a large yard, patio or pool area) you may have issues with the inherit limitations out of the box regarding placement of each of the components. This does not take away from the core strengths of this setup which are quality speakers, weatherproofed with the ability to camouflage themselves into just about any outdoor environment.
Pros:
- Good sounding, fidelity speaker setup
- Aesthetically pleasing
- Built to withstand the elements.
Cons:
- Potential placement limitations
- Subwoofer sound production may be less then expected for those with “booming" expectations.
- Need decent power from your receiver or amp to “drive” this system.

nice all in one unit

If you are in the market for an all in one PC, this Dell might be the one for you. This Inspiron model features a 27" HD touch screen, a powerful Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of memory and most importantly a 512GB Solid State hard drive (SSD), which takes the place of a slower, old style spinning disk. With modern PCs the inclusion of an SSD drive improves performance immensely. The form factor is pretty cool, essentially it is a screen on a sturdy stand, the screen also swivels vertically, but not horizontally. If you like to add internal components to your PC this might not the type of unit for you. On the rear of the unit, there are three USB ports, two HDMI out ports, an audio out, a USB-C port, SD card slot and one ethernet port. Of course, the unit also come with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. One USB port is taken up when you plug in the supplied Dell receiver which wirelessly attaches both the keyboard and mouse.
As for the all-around computing package, using some benchmarking software I found the performance to be very good for most normal tasks. The processor is an Intel 11th generation i7-1165G7 CPU running at 2.80Ghz with four cores (eight logical processors), most of the other components also perform well (SSD, Memory). The video benchmarking leaves a little to be desired, the Intel Iris Graphics display maxes out at HD resolution 1920x1080 @ 60mhz, the video performance is good for general use, however it will struggle a bit in full resolution gaming. If you desire better video performance, I suggest you look at higher end models which include an NVIDIA video adapter. Regardless the touch screen is crisp and can be adjusted using the Windows built in controls. 4k resolution is a bit high of an expectation for this type of unit.
Dell does a good job with the setup experience and integrating it with Windows Cortana, the process is straightforward and easy. There is not much bloatware included other than a few annoying notifications from the trial version of the McAfee security suite and Dropbox. I was able to easily and seamlessly use my existing Office 365 subscription by logging into my office account.
Using the built in Dell utilities (specifically the SupportAssist feature) I was able to easily apply several driver and BIOS updates. These type of updates usually provide additional stability, but after applying them my benchmark utility saw slight improvements in disk, graphics, memory and CPU performance.
Overall, this is a competent, well-built unit which provides the convenience of an all in one. It actually is a bit portable (at least within the constraints of your house or apartment) so you can move it without much effort between rooms.
Pros:
- The “All in One” concept
- Nice large touch screen
- Well-built unit and integrated stand
- Dell quality utilities and support
- Good mainstream system performance for most use cases.
- strong processor
- inclusion of an SSD drive
Cons:
- expandability, do not get an “All in One” if you like upgrading or swapping out components
- not many, but if you do any type of video/photo editing or gaming you might seek a model with a better graphics adapter (GPU) and a higher resolution screen.

Excellent active noise canceling capabilities

The Skullcandy - Hesh ANC Over the Ear Noise Canceling Wireless Headphones are well built and ergonomic. They are comfortable and produce little fatigue associated with over the ear headphones. They sound rich, although a little heavy on the bass side, but not enough to muddy the sound. I did find that placement over the ear is key, highs seemed to fade quickly if the cup was not aligned properly over your ear, this is the first time I ever remember encountering this on headphones of the fully over the ear variety. The active noise cancelling is about the best I have encountered, doing a great job filtering out background noise. Nothing complex with the controls, they are pretty much standard with a dedicated noise cancelling on/off button. The headphones charge using a USB-C plug and the headphones also have a line in plug. Bluetooth connections were solid, never had any dropped connections.

Pros:

• Quality of build
• Excellent active noise cancellation
• Good sounding
• Comfortable
Cons:

• They are more bass focused then most (could be a Pro for some people).

nifty telework device
on January 27, 2021
Posted by: Bappy
from Raleigh, NC
Working from home full time since November basically has relegated me to working and communicating through my laptop and plugging in a set of Apple wired earbuds for my Zoom conferenced filled day. Seeking a better solution, I got the Dell Mobile Adapter Speakerphone, which provides me some of the functionality of being in a meeting room in the office with my team. The device connects to your laptop via a Thunderbolt connector, has a single HDMI out port, a USB-C out port and two standard USB-A ports acting as a hub. As for the speakerphone functionality, it has indicator lights including mute and a few other visual indicators, including buttons to start and end calls. It integrates well with Skype, Teams, Zoom and WebEx. Voices sound rich over the speaker and the microphone is sensitive enough to pick up other people in a room participating in a call (you remember, those days when people could congregate and collaborate in a conference room).

In any case this is a nifty device, is well built and works seamlessly. If only I could figure out how to connect two additional HDMI driven monitors like with my current thunderbolt dock.

Pros:
• Perfect for telework.
• Integrates well with teleconferencing platforms.
• Good sound quality, with echo reduction
• Huge improvement over the built it mic and speaker in my laptop.

Cons:
• could use another HDMI port.
