Powerful & cordless

This vacuum sets the standard for the battery operated ONEPWR line of products. I have an earlier generation of one of the vacuums from this cordless line of products and this one is substantially improved. For one, this comes with a 4 Ah battery, which provides good running time and some of the extra capacity needed to drive the brush and effectively suck up any debris off your floor. In carpet mode this vacuum does a very competent job in cleaning up my cat’s long hair, which she sheds in clumps. The unit also has a mode where the powered brush is disabled. I found this mode to be especially effective on my laminate floors. The powerhead portion of the unit, where the power brush is located swivels, making it super easy to maneuver across your bare floors or carpets. I cleaned up a pretty sizable portion of my house with this and the battery still had more to give. This is a vast improvement over some of the earlier vacuums in the Hoover ONEPWR line.
Overall this is a competent house cleaning tool, you almost forget it is cordless, which is great progress for this product line.
Pros:
- Powerful, cordless
- Effective power brush head
- Three vacuum modes
- Good battery life
- Easy to maneuver and is light weight.
Cons:

marginal printer/$$ grab ink service
on July 16, 2020
Posted by: Bappy
from Raleigh, NC
The HP DeskJet 2755 All in One printer is a uniquely styled, fairly small printer which provides basic functionality. It can be connected, wirelessly via Bluetooth, wifi and is works with Apple AirPrint. Setup is performed solely by using a mobile app, which seems to be commonplace these days. You download the HP Smart app and it guides you through the setup process. I had a few issues during setup, nothing major and the app guides you through connecting it first via Bluetooth, then connecting to your WiFi network. A couple of times I had to restart the process as it failed in certain areas, especially connecting to WiFi. The printer comes with two small ink cartridges (one black and one tri color) which the app guides you through installing. HP also offers an "instant ink" subscription which monitors your ink level and sends you new cartridges as needed. Now most printer manufacturers make money not on the printer, but the consumables itself, like these small ink cartridges. I guess for people who don't want to be bothered with purchasing ink at a retail store this might come in handy. I see it as a way to lock you into their ink cartridge pipeline. In any case back to the printer, it prints competently, but is pretty slow. Print quality is marginal, not the worst I've seen for an inkjet, but not the best either. Printing on plain paper reveals a bit of banding, but otherwise is unremarkable. Interestingly enough my Desktop computer automatically recognized the printer on my network and installed the appropriate drivers on my Windows 10 desktop after the mobile app setup the printer’s wifi connection. Printing worked well from both my iPhone and Desktop, scanning did not work from my desktop, an establishing connection message never went away. The HP Smart app handled scanning without an issue and was able to save a scan and save directly to my photo album on my iPhone.

Overall this is a OK printer, does the job of printing and scanning. I suspect the ink cartridges will require replacement fairly soon, the printer seems to eat ink in regular mode, as with other printers, printing in draft mode might help to conserve ink.

Pros:
• Cheap
• Small and stylish

Cons:
• Setup can be challenging
• Ink consumption is a problem
• Prefer separate ink color cartridges as opposed to a black and tri color cartridge.
• Seems like a money grab, in doing the hard sell on selling you essentially an ink subscription

maybe electric shavers are not for me
on June 29, 2020

from Raleigh, NC
I got the Panasonic arc3 electric shaver as a foray into electric shavers. Usually I am a shaving cream person, which provides me with a smooth shave with generally no issues. An electric shaver I figured would be good for quick maintenance when I don't have time for a shaving cream-based shave. However, I have come to the conclusion that an electric chaver might not be for me. The ARC3 shaver seemed to struggle with my three-day beard, it did not shave closely and left me very itchy, even after a quick face rinse. Also it took several passes to effectively shave my face. The attachments for trimming my sideburns were effective. Could I see using this shaver in a pinch or for occasional maintenance: YES, as an everyday shaver NO. And that might be a case of personal preference, not necessarily indictive of this electric razor.

Pros:

• Well designed and built
• Flexible use
• Trimming tools

Cons:

• Not particularly effective for my use case (daily face shave)

beast of a portable speaker
on June 20, 2020
Posted by: Bappy
from Raleigh, NC
I like the Sony SRS-XB43 Portable Bluetooth Speaker more than the smaller cousins in the Sony wireless portable speaker line, this one is a bit of a beast and almost impossible to pickup with one hand. The sound is rich and clear sounding, bass response is substantial, the sound settings are customizable when using the Sony Music center app. The speaker is easy to pair, has a combined play/pause/next track/answer call button and a separate +/- volume buttons on top. Around back a removable small panel reveals configuration controls, a USB Type A jack for charging other devices, a USB Micro Type B jack for charging the speaker and a line in jack (which I usually do not see on Bluetooth speaker) for connecting a device to playback through this speaker.
When I first started to play music through the speaker it was set to “Rave” mode which flashes sets of LEDs on the front of the speaker along with a changing color LED on each side that reproduces the light along the edges of the speaker. Before I had a seizure, I turned off this feature using the Sony Music Center app, although after using the speaker for a while I found myself playing with different lighting modes, finally settling in on the “Calm Cinnabar” mode. There are also ways of generating sound effects by bumping the sides, front, top or bottom of the speaker. You can also chain this speaker to others of the same type to expand your sound field (although I was never successful chaining with my SRS-XB41). To me most of these features are kind of gimmicky, with the only that had any staying power with me is the lighted borders and sound modes.
Overall what matters with a Bluetooth speaker is sound and this speaker delivers that in convincing fashion.
Pros:
- Configurable, rich sound with great bass response
- Big block of portable speaker
- Sony Music center app that is the heart of controlling and configuring the speaker
- Very good battery life, with a USB type A jack for charging other devices
- Line In jack for connecting devices via a cord
- LED lighted borders
Cons:
- Difficult to grab with one hand.
- Not a fan of the combined play/pause/next track/answer call button.

excels in air purification
on May 17, 2020

The Molekule Air Mini+ is a compact air purifier good for medium size rooms (approx. 250 square feet). The unit comes with a filter and includes Photo Electrochemical Oxidation (PECO) (I believe this includes a UV light) to eliminate viruses, bacteria and other airborne contaminates. I found the unit easy to unpack and setup. It is WiFi enabled which allows it to connect to your network and report back its status, also allowing remote control operation (mainly fan speed). What is really cool about this unit is it has an auto mode which will select the fan speed based on the level of indoor air pollution it detects. While the highest fan setting yields a pretty loud unit, most of the time mine remained whisper quiet in auto mode.
My personal experience after the first night I woke up in the morning without the usual congestion, it truly seemed to make a substantial difference in the air quality in my room. Not only is the unit well designed but it also delivers on its promise to clean the air in your room. While most of the functionality is controlled via the mobile app, there are also basic controls on the top of the unit, along with a faux leather handle. The only thing I did notice, is the unit does give off some light, so in a normally dark room this might be somewhat noticeable. There also was a faint smell of some type of manufacturing or plastic odor the first few days, it disappeared after awhile, but it might make sense to run the unit at its highest fan speed for a bit.
Overall, I am impressed with this unit, certainly it is a step above the normal setup usually found in air purifiers (the usual tandem of a HEPA filter with a pre filter). The additional of smart controls and mobile app connectivity certainly adds some technology and value.
Pros:
- air quality sensor
- PECO technology for additional air cleansing
- Smart controls, including a mobile app for control and status
- Really improves air quality.
Cons:
- Plastic smell for the first day or two
- Replacement filters are not cheap or generic.

A good addition to my Home Automation setup
on May 12, 2020

The August Wi-Fi smart lock is a pretty cool device which attaches to your existing deadbolt to add home automation to locking and unlocking of a door into your house or apartment. This version (which I believe is the fourth generation) is substantially smaller than previous versions so it doesn’t stick out as much as those did. They accomplished this by converting the batteries utilized in the unit from standard AAs to CR 123 batteries. I don’t usually use these batteries in other devices but I would expect them to have a pretty decent battery life and when it’s time to replace it that magnetic cover comes off the unit fairly easy and it is simple to replace the batteries
As for set up you have to download the August Home app for your mobile device either iOS or Android, there is not much documentation provided in the package, just a few small cards and that’s about it. Everything else requires the app, as it walks you through the set up, it is not a big deal but I still like to have a hardcopy or at least a PDF to download just to understand exactly how this device gets installed and setup. The app then walks you through setting up the device that connects via Bluetooth initially, you calibrate the lock to determine how far the open and close position is with your particular lock. If you are using iOS it interfaces with IOS’ HomeKit and this way you have functionality with Siri. Setup also attempts to connect to your Wi-Fi network so you can remotely. My router is pretty distant from where I was installing this lock, during setup the app complained about Wi-Fi being too far away and could I move the router closer to the lock. That was not possible at this time and I didn’t want to connect it to my other access point in the house, but since were moving within a month and I will be taking this device with me I thought it was not a big deal. As for the app it has all the standard features that you would expect in a basic lock, you can also use a proximity detection and geolocation to automatically lock and unlock based on your proximity to the device. The device remotely if the Wi-Fi is enabled as I mentioned I was not able to connect this to my Wi-Fi network but it would be handy to be able to do that especially when showing a house for sale like I’m doing. you can also give others access to this lock so they can have the same functionality I haven’t really explored that yet but seems like it would be a good thing for the rest of the family if they wanted to utilize this device to get in and out of our house.
Overall this is another device in my home automation set up and frankly is something that seems to be a pretty useful addition.
Pros:
- makes it simple to unlock and lock your house lock and forget
- Looks good substantially smaller than previous generations
- Well built
Cons:
- Lack of comprehensive instructions, only a few cards provided in the packaging. Install is totally app driven.
- WiFi reception range (was 50 feet from 2.4ghz access point, through a floor and several walls, my iPhone showed full strength)

decent entry level soundbarr
on April 14, 2020
Posted by: Bappy

The Yamaha - 2.1-Channel YAS-109 Soundbar is a small form factor sound bar. Over the last few years soundbars have been packed with more features and functionality. This entry level model has features such as Alexa which integrates pretty well with the Amazon ecosystem. I was able to seamlessly ask to play an artist and Alexa used my existing Amazon Prime playlists for that artist and played it. Alexa and all other functions were configured through the Yamaha Sound Bar app. Once I downloaded the app it was fairly easy to connect to your Wi-Fi network and setup services. The ports available include a single HDMI in and a single HDMI out port, optical input, network jack (for wired connections) an AC plug and a subwoofer out mono output to add a subwoofer via a wired connection.
As for the sound it is generally pretty good, clear and not booming. Although with the “built in subwoofers” it does a pretty good job at providing a bit of punch to your setup. I still think a separate subwoofer is a better solution, but in a pinch this will do, especially in an apartment setting. I had no problems setting up Spotify connect to stream music through the unit, there is also Bluetooth connectivity, but no AirPlay.
Overall I am pretty happy with this Soundbar, have not had any issues with it and think it is a pretty good value with good functionality.
Pros:
- Compact
- Alexa integration
- Full sounding
- Clear voice function for dialog clarity
- Spotify Connect and Bluetooth connectivity
Cons:
- None so far

good grip with remote controls for Sony cameras
on February 14, 2020
Posted by: Bappy
from Garner, NC
The Sony - Shooting Grip with Wireless Remote Commander has integrated controls within the handle. A Photo button (can be held halfway down to focus) a video button, a Custom 1 recall button, a control lock toggle and a rocker switch to zoom in and out, for lenses equipped with a power zoom. I did notice the zoom control was not a refined or incremental as using the on lens zoom control on my Sony a6100 camera (with kit lens). At times the zoom function frustrated me. In any case the handle is substantial feeling and can also act as a camera tripod (perhaps not if you have a bulky lens attached). In any case I found the shooting grip comes in handy. The handle connects via Bluetooth to your Sony camera, I had some issues with the initial connection but noticed I had remote set to off on my camera even though the Bluetooth was on. Once connected I did not have any issues. The grip wakes up on its on when picked up. The unit is powered by a 2032 watch battery which I found odd. There was also no battery indicator, so when the battery is dead, you are out of luck if you don’t have a spare. Perhaps a small lithium ion rechargeable would have been a better choice. Using this to vlog is probably the best use case for the Sony grip. Frankly I would have liked some stabilization features. I would rather use a gimble, but this is better than hand holding your camera while trying to self video/vlog.
Pros:
- Sturdy, substantial feel
- good for larger hands
- button releases for horizontal and vertical swivels
- remote buttons for zoom, photo, video, lock and C1
Cons:
- jumpy zoom rocker switch, no real zoom step control
- powered by a 2032 Watch battery
- does not yield as steady video as I would have liked.

solid, active noise cancelling headphones
on February 9, 2020
Posted by: Bappy
from Garner, NC
The over the ear Bang & Olufsen - Beoplay H9 Wireless Noise Cancelling headphones are well built and ergonomic. These super comfortable headphones do not produce any fatigue associated with over the ear headphones. Metal, plastic and soft foam earcups (each handily marked L - R on the inside of each headphone) yield a world of great sounding, high fidelity playback of recorded material. The active noise cancelling does a very good job at filtering out background noise of the already good noise isolation provided by ear encompassing headphones. The sound is stellar, non distorted reproduction of various sources from music to podcasts and everything in between. The left headphone has a dedicated button for Google assistant, not sure if this is re-assignable, the right headphone contains most of the controls, with a sliding on/off/pair switch, a USB-C fitting for charging and a mini headphone input for wired connections. While on the subject of connections, Bluetooth was solid - providing good frequency response, distortion free playback from my iPhone, never had any dropped connections except for one strange occurrence early on the required me to forget the connection and re-pair. It will be interesting to see how these do reception wise once lawn cutting season starts up again. Usually the engine on the ride on mower seems to cause Bluetooth connection stability issues with other Bluetooth headphones. One of the features that some complain about is the touch control built into the right headphone. Gestures are used, clockwise/counterclockwise circle pattern for volume control, up and down for noise canceling on/off and forward and back for track control. I found once you got learned the patterns, it was easy. Think of it as a clock face and the gestures are easy to master.
Overall I am very happy with these headphones and look forward to my first flight with them to really put them through a good test of the active noise cancellation. Given how they have performed so far I'm sure they will be up to the task.
Pros:
- Quality of build
- Sound reproduction
- Good active noise cancellation
- Comfortable for long listening session
- Gesture enabled control

Cons:
- Dedicated, non re-assignable Google assistant button

really capable for most use cases
on January 6, 2020
Posted by: Bappy
from Garner, NC
I haven't really considered myself an advanced photographer, but an enthusiast steering away from SLR cameras and mainly using higher end, point and shoot or super zoom cameras. My old original Canon Digital SLR Rebel XT collected dust until recently, but after taking a look again at some of the photos I took with it, I decided to go for something modern and mirrorless. My most recent purchase has been a Canon PowerShot SX70 HS Superzoom, mainly for 4k video recording capability coupled with a powerful optical zoom. With the Sony a6100 APS-C, I tried to get the best of both worlds, a camera that could utilize a large sensor (24 megapixel) to take good photos and video.
The Sony a6100 is a fairly compact (for its type) camera, since you have the flexibility of using other APS-C lenses it can increase the overall size of the camera. However with the lens supplied in this kit (a small 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 power zoom lens) you are able to take great photos and high quality 4k video, with the ability to purchase more capable lenses. I was especially impressed with the depth of the images which it was able to take, the quality of the image sensor also comes through in the high bit rate 4k video it takes. The camera body has an electronic viewfinder as well as a 3 inch flat panel LCD touchscreen which can be adjusted to a few different angles and allow you to take selfies if you want. The screen is not fully articulating like other cameras, but it is an improvement over fixed screens on the older models in this camera line. The camera is easy to grip and this comes in handy to help hold it steady as the camera body does not have any built in image stabilization, you have to purchase a lens with that capability (the kit lens provide has this capability).
The camera has features usually found in any digital SLR and the Sony a6100 excels in many areas including one of best autofocus capabilities in any camera I ever owned. It focuses super quick, has real time tracking which can keep objects, faces and eyes in focus, this capability also works well when taking video. The LCD touchscreen can also be used to tap and focus on your subject, however no other functions are really touch controlled. Sony's menu system is a bit convoluted, but you can customize the function menu with shortcuts for settings which are buried deep in the menu system. It also has a dedicated movie button and a two custom setting buttons. The camera also has WiFi connectivity which is pretty standard these days for transferring photos and video to you smartphone, there is also some remote control capabilities including live view in the smartphone app. There is also a external microphone jack next to USB & HDMI ports and a compact battery which you can get around 400+ shots out of a charge, you can charge the battery through the USB port which really comes in handy, although no external charger is provider.
Pros:
- Large 24 megapixel sensor
- Mirrorless
- Great autofocus system
- High quality JPEG files with RAW image capabilities
- Low light performance
Cons:
- Supplied kit lens is mediocre but more than usable
- Not weather resistant, plastic body
- Convoluted menu system, although customizable menu and function menu compensate for this.
- no external battery charger included
