Multipurpose Rice Cooker/Steamer - works well
on January 31, 2024
Posted by: Bappy
The Cosori five-quart rice cooker includes a nine in one touch control on the front panel, which is a bit more basic than the previous model which seemed to be a bit of overkill control wise. This unit has “advanced fuzzy logic controls” which if you look up the definition basically means this unit adapts and has a few different cooking stages depending on what setting you press on the front panel. The controls also provide a plus and minus button to change some of the preset parameters to meet your needs as will as a multi-function time display. Unpacking the unit was simple and like any other cooking appliance you should really wash the components with a mild soap and water. For this unit that included washing the nonstick inner pot which primarily where the food is cooked in this unit. Also, the unit also comes with a basket if you choose to steam a vegetable or something similar. I also cleaned the removable inner lid which contains a steam cap and release mechanism. In addition, I cleaned the inside of the unit with a damp paper towel. The instructions and quick start guide provided clear directions on getting to know the rice cooker. The user manual also mentioned to run the unit through a steam cycle without food first to familiarize you with the operation of the rice cooker (also it helps eliminate some of the odors associated with manufacturing the unit). Also provided within the user manual was a table on how to cook certain items which I found useful and straightforward. We initially only cooked a cup of long grain white rice to see how it did, the guide stated that should take between thirty-five and forty five minutes, however the rice cooked more quickly than that and the time display on the front panel gradually indicated a even quicker cooking time (perhaps fuzzy logic) ? As for the rice, it was moist, and I fluffed it up with the provided standing rice paddle yielding a really well cooked and fluffy white rice. You can also set a delay timer of up to a twenty-four hours if you want to coordinate cooking just before you arrive home. Also, after the cooking cycle is complete the unit will enter a keep warm mode. I am looking forward to steaming some vegetables with the 2.3 quart steam basket. As well as cooking some Long Grain Brown Rice, Jasmine White rice and especially some steel cut oatmeal, all of which sound promising. As for the unit itself, it seems well built and includes several different items including a measuring cup (which for some odd reason had lines but no measurement units) a recipe book, the earlier mentioned steam basket and the rice paddle. Overall, I am looking forward to using my first ever rice cooker even more, expanding into other cooking use cases. >>> Pros >> simple to operate, with not an overabundance of unneeded settings or controls >> BPA Free materials (for items which have a food contacting surface). >> two year warranty >> Fuzzy Logic seemed to lead to good results <<< Cons << I might prefer a metal based steam basket like a previous model >> States it is BPA free (cooking surfaces), but appears a sticker was added to the box with the warning from the State of California that this product can expose you to lead and BPA, so I am a bit confused. Recently there was an article in Consumer reports on plastics and food contamination, so I am and have always been hyper vigilant regarding this, ensuring I never microwave food in plastic containers. So, I may need to inquire with Cosori on more detail about this unit in regards to food safety.

large humidifier - with smart capabilities.
on January 25, 2024
Posted by: Bappy
The Levoit 6000s is a large humidifier capable of being used to raise the humidity in medium to large sized homes. The unit consists of four core components, a large 6-gallon water tank as the base that has attached rollers for ease of movement (as most people will have difficulty lifting a filled water tank), a support frame which sits above the tank and snaps into the top of the tank, a wick filter frame with four individual filters and a powered top component which contains a fan, controls and a display. The design is quite ingenious as the powered portion (top) pulls air and water into the filters via the filter frame and dispenses humid air through the top. What is really a desirable feature with this unit is it DOES NOT produce a mist and thus if you have hard water, you do not see mineral dust on the surfaces of your home. Mineral dust is a problem I have run into with traditional humidifiers. The unit can be controlled from the top panel, and also pairs with a smartphone app. The smartphone app provides a good history of your indoor and if you setup the smartphone with location services enabled it will gather the currently outdoor levels via the internet. The app also provides full control of the unit. Also included is a filling hose which attaches to your faucet to aid in filling the tank, the hose and faucet fitting had me do a double take, as it is visually interesting. The unit also has a humidity sensor so it can cycle the unit fan to bring humidity levels up to your desired level. I used this humidifier during a bit of a cold dry spell in the southeast US, setting the unit to fifty percent relative humidity level and it mostly kept up and never got below five percent of the level I set. The humidifier started to cycle off and on less as the weather changed and the outdoor humidity increased. Over the course of four days I had to refill the tank at once, I was surprised that it used so much of the six gallon capacity. The fan in this unit was a bit loud at times when really pumping humidity into the air, however it always sounded controlled. The unit also has a sleep mode which reduces the fan noise as well as turning off the blue colored LED display to ensure the light does not disturb you. The unit will remind you when it needs to be cleaned, after three days it started to notify me that maintenance was needed. Constant maintenance is needed with most humidifiers to ensure bacteria or mold does not form on the components and it is no different here. A small brush is also provided to enable you to clean the filters of any mineral buildup, mine had none. The unit also has a dry mode which helps to dry out and prepare the wick filters for user maintenance. The manual also mentions that the four filters should be replaced every 3 months, but depending on your usage you may get more life out of the filters by promptly cleaning them and allowing them to dry out when humidity is not needed to prevent mold growth >>> Pros >> large tank >> strong fan >> humidity sensor >> easily disassembled >>for storage within the supplied fabric bag. <<< Cons: << ongoing issues with availability of the wick filters. << maybe a bit heavy some folks when the tank if full

Toy drone, set your expectations at this price pt.
on January 22, 2024
Posted by: Bappy
The Snaptain E10 drone is designed for people fourteen and older as an entry level product. It is substantially less expensive than drones from other manufacturers and even though it has a camera, I would not consider this a camera drone (one that takes steady video and pictures). The Snaptain E10 drone falls squarely towards the toy drone category, with an adequate camera that takes HD resolution video and low megapixel photos. The price point is somewhat reasonable and out of the box the drone looks quite appealing. However, at this price point it falls in flying characteristics, which actually makes this drone more difficult to fly, which is counter intuitive given it is targeting a novice or first time drone user. The Snaptain E10 is foldable, making it compact, comes with two rechargeable batteries that are rated for about 18 minutes of flight time, a decent, well designed controller which pairs with the drone rather easily and then maintains connectivity with the drone while in flight by using Wi-Fi connectivity. Setting up the drone was fairly simple after the batteries were charged for both the aircraft and the controller. You download the appropriate mobile device software (apps are available for both iOS and Android, with me choosing the latter) and then you are ready to fly. As a First Person View (FPV) drone when flying it you actually feel like you are piloting a mini plane. The controller has dedicated buttons for a few maneuvers, including a dedicated take off and land button, as well as the ability to circle an area or flip the drone upside down. In addition, there is a emergency power off button that will quickly cut the power after pressing for three seconds, at that point the drone will drop from the sky. The manufacturer recommends that you fly when no wind is present and that certainly is the case due to the lack of power in the motors driving the propellers and the lack of a level sensing feature, which makes it quite the choir to fly with any wind. Takeoff and landings can be a bit abrupt at times. I would absolutely try to fly this drone under the best conditions, meaning no obstacles, no wind in a relatively flat area. All drones per FAA regulations have to stay within your line of sight and given some of the limitations of this drone and controller you should never lose sight of the drone. Unlike more expensive drones, this does not come equipped with any GPS functionality, so there is no “return to home” function if your controller loses the connection to the drone. As for the video, the sensor in the camera is marginal, it will take HD video, but the contrast and saturation is a bit odd and the picture often “blooms” and is less than clear. I did have some strange bands in the video I took which was present both on the screen of my phone while flying (transmission between the drone and phone) and on the video it recorded to the MicroSD card into the provided card on the bottom of the drone. This banding effect seemed associated with the motors. As for the flying experience, it was a bit difficult, and I think some of the more expensive drones with GPS and a gimble based camera are actually easier to fly. So really it becomes what would you rather do ? Spend considerably more money on a more sophisticated drone with a better flying experience but at the cost of losing or crashing four to seven hundred dollars or something less expensive. Can you have fun with this drone within reason, absolutely – but if you catch drone fever, be prepared to step up to a better product. >>> Pros >> looks more expensive than it is >> controller is a decent design >> takes video/photos >> if you lose it or crash it you will not be happy, but given the price point it will generally not break the bank >> nice accessories provided, including a case, a second battery and extra propellers <<< Cons << no GPS or stabilization << no return to home << camera quality is marginal << no wind resistance at all, only can fly without wind present << controls are less than precise.

Great Massager with multiple attachments
on January 9, 2024
Posted by: Bappy
The Sharper Image Powerboost Plus Deep Tissue Percussion Massager is a great device. The massager comes in a compact case which stores neatly and keeps things organized. The case is sturdy and stands upright. There are 6 attachments that are used for different areas on the body and up to 7 speeds. The device charges using a USB C charging cable, which it comes with. No block included which is a con. Also no place in the case to store a block, which would come in handy if you travel with the device, another con.
I found the device a little large to grip, in that it is slightly larger than a vacuum handle. It also has a good bit of weight to it, making the grip harder to use over time. Additional con in my opinion.
The device does not have any annoying vibrations that other devices do have. My teeth did not rattle like other devices I have tried!! It is quiet as stated on the box.
The compression attachment feels so terrific on my sore back from a sore muscle that never seems to go away. It is very gentle but alleviating at the same time. I also used the round attachment on my shoulder where I have bursitis and found relief as well. I used the lowest setting on both areas so as to not to be stiff and in worse shape than when I started using it.
Overall I would highly recommend the Sharper Image Powerboost Plus Deep Tissue Percussion Massager to any household. It is like having your own home massaging device. Also this would make a great gift for anyone!!

A traditional looking watch - with a dash of smart
on November 27, 2023
Posted by: Bappy
Having not ventured into the smart watch world the Withings - ScanWatch 2 - Heart Health Hybrid Smartwatch seemed like an interesting choice. The ScanWatch 2 otherwise looks like a traditional watch, however once you look closely you will see a small circular OLED non color screen which can display small messages and notifications. In addition the screen can be used to set options on the phone. Withings health related products have a good reputation and the sensors on this watch can detect heart rate, gather an Electrocardiography (ECG) measurement, get a measurement of your blood oxygen, Respiration rate, Resting heart and Skin temperature rate. Also it can keep track of Calories burned, Distance swam, Distance traveled, Duration of exercise, Duration of sleep stages, Hours slept, Laps swam, Pace, Route, Running/Walking speed, Stairs climbed, Steps taken. What I found intriguing is the sleep health feature to measure key metrics during sleep. I gained a new insight into my sleep habits and truly provided me with information I have not had before. As for setup, the watch easily paired via Bluetooth with my iPhone as well as integrating with Apple Health and providing that app with additional data. The Withings iOS app has a lot of capabilities, although I would not call it overly intuitive. The app does allow you to configure notifications on your watch from some of the mobile apps on your phone, I chose initially to be notified of several events such as texts, phone calls and a notifications from a few other apps. Notifications are scrolled through the OLED screen which provides basic display capabilities. I did need to purchase a bigger watch bands online, as the one out of the box was not large enough to fit around my wrist. As a matter of fact this traditional looking watch looks a bit small on my wrist, however it does not diminish the usefulness of this watch. If you are not yet ready for a full feature smartwatch or dislike the look the Withings ScanWatch 2 Heart Health Hybrid Smartwatch seems like a good middle ground with some world class health sensors. However if you are looking for capabilities like you would get in a traditional full feature smartwatch, this may not be the one for you.

Two steps forward, one step back in Arlo evolution
on November 21, 2023
Posted by: Bappy
I have been a user of Arlo products since 2015. This is my third different camera model, the Arlo - Essential 1-Camera Outdoor Wireless 2K Security Camera (2nd Generation) with Color Night Vision. I have seen the company expand rapidly and spin off from Netgear which was the original innovator of these wireless security cameras, it was a game changer. The Arlo Camera Outdoor Wireless 2K Security Camera no longer requires a base station and can connect to your Wi-Fi network directly. That is good and bad as my original base station model has the ability to plug in a USB flash drive for local storage, not the case with this generation. For most use cases this is not a problem, however I still like to have a product that does not solely rely on cloud storage and a subscription. I believe with the paid cloud subscription you get storage of camera video events stored in the cloud for up to thirty days. In any case this updated camera provides 2k resolution (2560 x 1440) with a 130-degree field of view. The jump to 2k resolution is a substantial improvement over older models which only provided HD video (1920x1080). By providing 2k resolution you could conceivably zoom in on license plates as needed (although depending on motion, the frame rate may not be sufficient enough to capture detail at that level for fast moving objects). In addition, this camera has a color night vision mode which also is a welcome feature. Infrared driven night vision can also be configured to shine light as far as 25 feet away, in my case I have the night vision off as I placed the camera in my yard near a fairly busy, illuminated street. The camera also has two-way audio, a siren and a small LED spotlight (the latter is a welcome addition) and keeps up with other security camera makers which have included spotlight capabilities in their products. Performance is good, with quick notifications of detected events. The AI built into the cloud can also identify the object triggering the recording event by motion. This allows identification such as vehicle, person, animal or a package. As always indoor/outdoor Arlo camera models are weatherproof and mountable (basic mounting hardware is included), although I think I am still partial to the magnetic swivel mount of the past. What I consider a key difference from older generations of the Arlo Indoor/Outdoor cameras, is this new generation camera DOES NOT have removable batteries. I had invested in additional batteries and a charger for my existing Arlo cameras and basically swapped them as needed causing no gap in coverage by easily switching out the discharged battery for a fully charged one. In addition, given the number of motion events (cars passing by) the newer model (with all the battery saving features disabled) only yielded about four days of recording compared to the older model in the same location lasted at least a week to ten days. Again, how long the battery lasts is highly dependent on the number of motion events triggering recording and the configuration of video quality. I suspect in a less busy area you will get substantially better battery life; however it is impossible to ignore the differences in battery life and convenience of the previous generation in regards to batteries. One change I really do like is the conversion to USB-C for charging, certainly a more modern standard plug is a welcome change. Overall, the camera works well and provides clear video unmatched by similar security cameras. >> Pros: > clear 2k video resolution > easy setup and configuration > nice iOS app > a good number of configurable detection options > small LED light for close in lighting scenarios > no need for a base station << Cons: < battery life appears to be about half of older generation models. < battery is not removable; thus you have to take the camera out of service to recharge. < no local storage (it does not use the base station as previous models did.

great Apple Watch compatible watch band
on November 19, 2023
Posted by: Bappy
Needing a basic watch band for my Apple watch I came across the Insignia Braided Nylon Watch Band which is a cost effective watch band from Best Buy’s house brand Insignia. This watch band is made of braided nylon which is comfortable to wear and looks good with a woven pattern. The band easily attaches to your 38mm, 40mm or 41mm Apple watch. The material is lightweight and you barely notice you are wearing it. This nylon watch band by design is water resistant and looks good on your wrist. It comes is a few colors and I chose the “Stone” color which is subtle and low key. The watch band has a basic buckle mechanism and a loop to strap down any excess material. The band is ¾ of an inch wide and is comfortable to wear. I actually bought a few other colors after seeing the quality of another product by Best Buy’s value line of Insignia brand products. Absolutely works for me ! >> Pros: > good value, relatively inexpensive. > looks good. > comfortable to wear > waterproof, after all it is braided nylon material.

Budget Color Printer without the inkjet headaches
on November 13, 2023
Posted by: Bappy
The Brother HL-L3280CDW Wireless Compact Digital Color Printer has Laser Quality Output. I’m unsure what the difference between Laser and Laser like is, but regardless this printer provides good color printing. I would not regularly print photographs on plain paper and expect exceptional results, if I wanted better results in printing photographs I would use better stock paper including something that has a more glossy finish. For everyday business printing this printer does a very good job. The printer is larger and heavier than I expected and has enough room to have an integrated 2.7-inch touch screen to configure settings (including networking parameters). One issue I had was entering my Wi-Fi password for the wireless access feature, it was a bit cumbersome trying to use a finger, so I had to use a stylus from another device and type the characters in a very deliberate fashion. AirPrint is built into this printer so printing from an iOS device is seamless and easy. I downloaded the Brother Mobile Connect app and was able to print photos, although the upload of the photos to the printer took a while (sixty to ninety seconds). Duplex printing is also a feature that is highly desirable at this price point. In addition, the small color screen provides the ability to print from cloud-based apps like Google Drive, EverNote and Dropbox. I like the idea of four separate toner cartridges as opposed to the old color ink jet technology that often clogs due to non use. Having color printing on demand without having to unclog ink nozzles or wasting a bunch of ink to clean them could be considered the best feature with this type of printer. Longer term I will likely utilize Brother’s subscription service for consumables. >> Pros: printer is a good value > does a great job printing color pages for business or home use > Duplex printing > varied ways to connect to your network (gigabit Ethernet port or Wi-Fi) > small color touchscreen panel << Cons: photo printing is not a strong point < some of the plastic parts seem a bit delicate.

One for two, Vacuum good/mop so so
on November 6, 2023
Posted by: Bappy
So I was really excited about the prospect of throwing away my trusty Swiffer and replacing it with a low effort iRobot Roomba Combo i5 Robot Vacuum and Mop. Unpacking this unit you do not really notice any visible differences between robot vacuum and others that provide an automated cleaning experience. Until you notice there is a place for a cleaning pad at the bottom of the rear of this unit. Also the slot for the dust bin which also fits a different type of bin that is used for the mopping function. Both bins are the same size, but one of the bins also has a tank built into it to hold water or a liquid cleaning solution (iRobot also has a cleaning solution that can be purchased, a sample would have been nice). Setup is fairly easy using the iRobot app after you have placed the unit on the charging stand. If you plan on using the mop function then installing the drip pan is a must. I found that the drip pan became separated from charging station and sometime slid on the floor if not secured (the drip pan should have some type of feet which are effective in keeping it in place and flat). In any case my home is mostly laminate floors, with a few area rugs and mats. The unit spent a few hours "mapping" my cleaning area which I later divided up into specific rooms for targeted cleaning. As for how the iRobot Roomba Combo i5 Robot Vacuum and Mop performs, for vacuuming, it does a good job picking up dirt and materials. The mopping function on the other hand seems a bit like a novelty feature, I didn't find it to be overly effective and mostly just spread any dirt around. Is that any different than a Swiffer? not really. Overall I was impressed with the unit and its ability to vacuum multiple surfaces, but I already had a Roomba to do this. If you want the additional mopping function then by all means get this unit, Roomba has proven that it builds reliable robot vacuums. Don't throw away the Swiffer (or better yet an old fashioned mop) just yet, the mopping feature really seemed more of a hassle then what it brought to the table (actually floor).

budget, but they perform
on October 28, 2023

The Soundcore P25i True Wireless In-Ear Headphones follow in the steps of other of their products I have. They provide well functioning electronics that sound good, not the best, but at this price point it fills a good portion of what ear bud users want, bass heavy to the point of needing to be tuned down a bit, not a problem Soundcore's mobile app provides a myriad of audio settings, at least one or two to suit your needs. The ear bud design is hard plastic with extended tips for easy handling especially when placing them in and out of your ears. The ear buds come with a charging case, nothing fancy - hard plastic, no lights and a carrying handle, the base unit will charge the buds up to three times which means about 30 hours of playback juice from the case. I had not checked out the battery life yet, but they are rated generously at ten hours of playback. Regardless, these earbuds are a bargain at this price and match performance of some more expensive models. >>Pros: price, bass, sound. << Cons: not many especially at this price point.
