Gamer mouse, office use

Listen, I am not a gamer, but am partial to Logitech products. They are always well built, come with utilities and generally bridge the gap between casual user and pro at whatever you use it for. The G PRO Hero gaming mouse fits into that category. It comes with all the buttons you need as a gamer or as a person that just likes some additional configurable functionality. The mouse has RGB configurable lighting or you can just leave it to run through the color gamut (like I did). The mouse fits in my hand well and is ergonomic. Tracking is precise and operates smoothly. Overall it is a mouse, but a significant step up in appearance, functionality and performance over your run of the mill “supplied with your computer” mouse.

Handy and useful

Honeywell solution is good and basic with additional sensors for doors and windows. The base station has a built-in camera microphone and speaker, the speaker is Alexa capable for Amazon services. I have not used that function. The camera has a wide field of view with a clear HD picture. It can send you alerts when motion is detected along with alerts for when the sensors detect that a door or window was opened. Initially I had a problem with one of the sensors which required me to remove the battery and reset it before I was able to use it successfully. Overall this is a pretty good starter solution for those that want to basic home security system that is expandable with additional sensors and cameras. It was very easy to set up, you must download the mobile app to set up the system. There is an optional face detection feature available so you can determine when known people are detected. In addition you can have everyone in your family download the mobile app and set a geofence which will turn the system on and off depending on if a person is within the geofence. Tough order to have my kids use this feature as it increases the “creepy” factor from what they told me. But overall I think it would help as they never are without their mobile device and away mode you would cut down on false alarms or the need to manually engage. The System also comes with a key FOB which you can use to control the status of the system . Overall I found system to be pretty well integrated basic security camera with the additional functionality of having sensors that you can add for windows and doors. My wife found it pretty annoying that every time the door opened the system chimes but I found it functional. Also found it appealing that The system would log door entries where sensors were installed along with of course logging motion. I would recommend this as a basic system and I’m thinking about buying one for my elderly parent so I can keep tabs on them both visually and when they open an entry door.
Pros:
- nice looking device
- more capabilities than basic security camera systems
- polished mobile app
- expandable with addition sensors and devices
- geofencing capabilities
Cons:
-would be nice if you can pan and zoom camera, although it has a wide field of view
- sensor setup can be tricky.

steroids for your older PC/Notebook

Having a laptop at work that has a solid-state drive (SSD) instead of a spinning disk and also having several early generation SSD drives I use for video production, it is a no brainer to upgrade a hard drive in an older laptop, it increases performance and breathes new life into the device. Part of the reason iPads, tablets and mobile devices start “instantly” or restart quickly is because they do not use spinning disks, they use solid state memory. When you replace a traditional hard drive with one without moving parts you wind up with quick startup times (2 minutes down to 15 seconds) when booting/starting up a Windows 10 device. Just the fact that you are getting much quicker access to read and write file operations on an SSD leads to a large performance gain. The Western Digital - Blue PC SSD 500GB literally was simple to install in my laptop, replacing a Western Digital 750GB 5400rpm Hard drive which was originally installed from the factory in my HP Envy 360 laptop. Now if you are not comfortable with opening a PC (or laptop) and getting into the innards of a device then this is not a self-installable item. Especially if you want to replace the existing hard drive which contains the operating system (Windows). Within the SSD drive packaging there is information on how to download the imaging utility that can “clone” your existing drive to your new SSD. The Acronis software is fairly easy to use, however it does require some additional equipment to clone a device (a hard drive enclosure for your old drive, or SATA to USB adapter). Again if you are a novice, don’t expect to purchase a new SSD and successfully tackle this type of project.
As for the drive itself, it comes with no mounting materials, adapters or connectors other than the standard SATA interface connections. The performance of the drive itself when compared to other SSD drives is mediocre, especially PCIe or NVMe M.2 SSDs. However for the price, the Western Digital - Blue PC SSD 500GB drive is a decent value and is a relatively easy way of increasing performance of your PC or laptop.
Pros:
- Decent price
- Substantial performance improvement over traditional spinning hard drives
- Acronis software is provided (although has to be downloaded) to help clone or backup your existing drive
Cons:
- Installation can be tricky
- Performance in relation to other SSDs and SSD interfaces is mediocre
- Understanding of cloning, backups and Operating System fundamentals is required (recommend professional installation for non-technical users)

quality product, build and performance

I found this BestBuy exclusive very appealing, a Sonos & Sonance Outdoor Speaker Streaming Audio Bundle with xPress Audio Keypad. I have heard good things about Sonos products, they are well designed, aesthetic and they perform. So when the package arrived I was amazed at the size and weight of this bundle. Note: that these are not wireless speakers, they require a wired connection from the amp which is the core component of this system to the speakers. All the streaming capabilities take place from the amp and are connected to the speakers with standard speaker wire (not supplied). The amp attaches to your home network via WiFi or an ethernet cable. Unlike the speakers, the amp IS NOT weather proof. So essentially if you are going to use the speakers outdoors you need to run speaker cable. This could be an issue for some, however since we are in the process of building a new house I will have the screened in patio wired for speakers (and possibly a subwoofer, as the amp has an output). Regardless you need to be cognizant of these facts. In some cases, a quality Bluetooth speaker might be more appropriate for your needs. For true audiophiles, wired connections are far superior for high fidelity and given the design of this solution (you are not transmitting a Bluetooth signal from your mobile device to the speakers, but controlling the amp remotely) it provides the best fidelity (I will not get into a debate on the quality of streamed/compressed music).
Setup is fairly easy, you have to download the iOS or Android app and create a Sonos account if you do not already have one. Once you sign into your account you can setup the AMP to connect to your home network. Also you can setup your music services, I had no issue setting up Spotify and iHeartradio, I was not able to setup my SiriusXM account though. As soon as the unit was setup it performed an automatic firmware upgrade for the AMP unit.
As for sound quality, the speakers are powerful, yet crisp and clear. The speakers are rated for weather and are attractive with innovative speaker wire posts and brackets used to mount the speakers. Overall the system is a quality product which has a lot of capabilities. I did not have the opportunity to use the xPress Audio Keypad, however it provides remote control capabilities for the amp.
Pros:
- Well built, speakers are weather ready
- Sound quality is excellent, clear and crisp with good bass response
- LOUD
- For people already familiar with the Sonos ecosystem, this unit fits into their world nicely
- EQ capabilities within the Sonos app
Cons:
- Amp is not weatherproof
- Speakers are not wireless
- Mobile apps do not use the native music service apps (can be a positive or negative).
- Kinda pricy
- xPress Audio Keypad needs to be configured with an iOS app, no android

where did the cleaning solution go ?

Just got done using the Rug Doctor - FlexClean Upright Deep Cleaner and overall not terribly impressed. The unit come basically assembled, you just need to attach the handle, fill the tank and go. It has three different settings that control the amount of solution that is applied to either a floor (less solution) normal (for carpet) and heavy duty cleaning (lots of solution). We used the standard setting on our not overly dirty carpets (we don’t have pets). First off the unit is loud and heavy, theoretically it should be maneuverable since it has a handle that provides a lot of directional ability. However the unit is so heavy that it was difficult for my wife to push (it actually was easier pulling back as opposed to pushing forward). As for the cleaning, the tank that holds the used (sucked back up solution) was not very dirty and there was a substantial mismatch on solution dispensed on the carpet and the amount that was picked back up. If I was cleaning a carpet in a humid environment (as opposed to an air-conditioned house) I would be very wary about the amount of solution that was left in the carpet. In any case I really was not impressed by the cleaning power of this unit, I might try the cleaner on my vinyl flooring, however I probably would not on my hardwood floors given how the unit seems to do a marginal job recovering the cleaning solution.
Overall I wanted to recommend this unit, however I did not really think it did a satisfactory job in performing it’s core job….cleaning.
Pros:
- Easy to assemble
- Conceptually on par with units your rent
- Swivel handle
Cons:
- Hard to maneuver
- Heavy
- Does not do a good job of sucking up used cleaning solution
- Less than impressive cleaning results.

nice implementation of a Chromebook
on July 23, 2018

Picked up a new Chromebook as I wanted an alternative to the usual Windows 10 operating system loaded on standard notebooks. I’ve always used android tablets and like the Google Chrome OS. In any case, being of user of Google applications I found the Acer Spin 15 2-in-1 15.6" Chromebook appealing. This Chromebook is rather large with a brushed aluminum top containing with a gorilla glass display and a Chrome keyboard which is slightly different than the standard PC keyboard (where is the delete key ?). In any case the touchscreen is bright and clear and the insides of this unit impress with an Intel Pentium processor, 4GB of memory (RAM) and a 64GB Solid State Drive for storage. Performance is very good for the Chrome OS system in general, browser and multimedia content run smoothly and the Chromebook can be described as “perky”. This is a 2 in 1 system, the screen folds all the way back to transform what essentially is a notebook into a very big and unwieldy tablet. Regardless the size of the notebook does not subtract on the overall performance of this system. The only real issue I had was with the Netflix app which exhibited some glitches with screen blankouts, which appeared to be a hardware issue. I called Acer support who was very responsive and sent me instructions to update the Chrome OS. The update seemed to resolve the issues I had with Netflix. Overall I am happy with this unit, but when in the market for this type of system I would really confirm the size/form factor to ensure you are comfortable with whatever you choose to purchase.
Pros:
- great battery life, got over 10 hours with still more available, rated time is 13 hours.
- Interesting speaker placement (along the sides of the keyboard) relatively loud and clear.
- keyboard is backlit for use in low light conditions.
- large, clear and bright 1080p 15.6" screen.
- unit can be folded into different positions and can be made tablet like.
Cons:
- is a little big, unwieldy in tablet mode, I would opt for a smaller form factor.
- some of the edges could be a little more rounded, some are bordering on sharp.
- bezel along the screen seems a little wide (screen does not go from edge to edge, makes the unit larger than I think it needs to be)
- With size comes weight, the unit is not light by tablet standards or some notebooks
- When folded over in Tablet mode the speakers are facing in the wrong direction, not sure what the alternative is, whoever I paired a Bluetooth speaker easily and used that.

Good service, very configurable

NordVPN is a Virtual Private Network provider which offers software solutions that allow you to connect to the internet without exposing your IP address or potentially your information to you internet provider and or other organizations. However I am not going to explain the reasoning or concept behind VPN any further. As VPN providers go, NordVPN offers numerous connection servers in a plethora of countries. I have installed and used the Windows and iOS versions and both perform equally well. You have can choose to allow the software to connect to the optimal server within the country you want to use (based on your distance and utilization of the server). You also have the ability to pick and choose the server based on distance and load. In addition you have other options for servers optimized for peer to peer file sharing solutions (P2P/BitTorrent), double hop VPN (to provide a more secure, more difficult to trace connection). In addition NordVPN does not log your activity when connecting to the internet. Bet you didn’t know most internet providers do. I used Netflix from “other countries” to view content not available in the US, I did have a problem connecting to Amazon, apparently they are trying to protect the authenticity of their reviews and also prevent people from seeking alternate pricing on items (did not know their pricing varies depending on market). I did occasionally have problems with performance while using the VPN, essentially connected to a server that became busier as time went on, however generally performance was good, and you always have the option of connecting to a less busy server with the various options you have within the app. The only dislike I had was with the iOS implementation which seemed to be really aggressive with disconnecting you from the VPN during periods of inactivity. I had not run into this as much with another VPN product I had been using. The Windows version also seemed to have a problem running the VPN service on my laptop, although this problem did not seem to occur on my Desktop. Ultimately I had to change a setting on the service to allow it to interact with the desktop. They offer a myriad of tutorials , support options and forums regarding their product. I know the basics in regards to networking, however the options and knowledge is available if you really want to explore. Granted many VPN providers do not let you go “under the covers” with configuring and using their product.
Pros:
- Wide selection of servers and countries to connect to
- A lot of options for VPN type (double hop, peer to peer)
- Reasonable pricing
- Advanced options to connect without using their client via OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, PPTP and IKEv2/IPsec
Cons:
- Had an issue with the Windows installation on one machine
- iOS version seems to be overly aggressive in disconnecting during inactivity.
- Servers do seem to reach capacity quickly, some form of load balancing/switching to less loaded server might be nice.

what is it ?

Google Clips is supposed to be a standalone camera that provides you with the ability to catch "candid moments". I not sure who greenlighted this project, but trying to find a good use case for this device was difficult. I used it during a birthday party and it captured quite a few photos and movies (without audio). Although it has a wide field of view, often the pictures were motion blurred, distorted and not really of much use. The device is simple enough and is rechargeable via a USB port. The camera essentially creates an adhoc wireless network that your mobile device connects to for downloading pics/gifs taken. If you have a VPN running on your mobile device the camera will not work. You can also take manual snapshots with the camera, I really had a hard time figuring out what to do with this. I guess the intended purpose is to just let this camera snap away and you can decide later if anything was useful, I found less than 20% of the pics were of any use, so it you look at it from the pick and choose perspective then this is an OK device.
Often I would write a more in depth review, however there is not much to review or recommend for Google Clips.

good sounding, nice companion apps
on June 6, 2018

The Sony SP600N Sports Wireless Noise Canceling headphones are solid Bluetooth earbuds with a single wire connecting each of the buds. Closer to the left earbud is the battery/control block which has the standard buttons for power/pairing, noise canceling mode selection and USB charging input, these are all on the side of the block. Volume, pause/play are on the top of the block. I do like how there are numerous controls on the block (more on that later) so you don’t have to get inventive with multi-press sequences out of just one or two buttons. Initially I had an issue fitting the earbuds in my ear, however I figured out the trick is to insert and twist into each ear slightly, then they become pretty secure. As for the sound, it is clear and crisp, with punchy bass. I really do enjoy how these sound and with a choice of Sony mobile apps (Headphones and Music Center) you can really configure your sound preferences by using the equalizer, adjust noise cancelling mode and even audio track control. There is also a setting within the app to power off the headphones. Overall, I am really enjoying these earbuds, a combination of quality hardware and pretty good mobile apps produce a fine listening experience. The battery life appears to be what is stated at approximately 6 hours. Active noise cancelling built into these earbuds has minimal effect when turned on, much like the experience I had with a pair of Sony totally wire free earbuds, not sufficient to counteract noisy environments like planes, trains or automobiles.
Pros:
- High quality, true to source sound reproduction
- Good companion mobile apps
- Multifunction control block
Cons:
- Control block is large
- Noise cancellation is poor

delivering high res audio with ease
on May 30, 2018

from Garner, NC
The Sony 1AM2 Hi-Res Headphones are an over ear style model, that successfully isolate you from most outside sounds, although they do not include active noise cancelling. They are comfortable fitting even with my large ears and head. They are mostly constructed of plastic, with soft faux leather earcuffs and are lightweight and provide fatigue free listening. As for the sound, the 40mm liquid crystal polymer diaphragm provide a wide frequency range from 3Hz to 100khz, the outliers of that range are really not detectable in humans. Regardless if you consume high resolution audio these are the right set of headphones, they provide clear, crisp sound and the low frequencies do not seem to be overly emphasized or artificially enhanced. The tonal quality seems true to the source material. There are several tracks where I heard details layered within the recording that I never was aware of, quite the experience when you listen to familiar material and discover new detail. Since these are high res headphones listening to high bitrate FLAC files takes full advantage of the capabilities. At a minimum I suggest you crank to the max the streaming or download quality of your favorite music service, including a setting that provide maximum dynamic range. The only thing I was disappointed with was the lack of a hard storage case, they simply provide a fabric pouch, with a sleeve within it. I really am surprised that such a higher end product provides such substandard storage (in this case pouch). I would protect my investment in these, not cheap headphones and store them in a hard case.
Pros:
- Lightweight and comfortable
- High quality, true to source sound reproduction
- Quality sound cables provided, ground wire isolated for each channel
Cons:
- Case does not provide much protection, it is actually a fabric pouch
