Great little B&W Laser Printer
on August 28, 2022
Posted by: Bappy
HP comes up with a small, versatile Laser Printer. Nothing special here other that good quality laser printing. Coming from a long history of ink-jet printers for home use, I finally figured it was time to get a relatively low cost Laser Printer, who better than HP ? This has a two capacity toner refill regular and ultra-high-yield HP Toner Reload Kit which can yield about 5000 crisp laser printed black and white pages. The small foot printer can easily be place on a bookshelf of the corner of your desk. The setup was straightforward and easy with the HP Mobile App which detected the printer. The printer can connect a few different ways: USB 2.0, Ethernet 10/100, Bluetooth; 802.11a/b/g/n (2.4/5 GHz) Wi-Fi radio, Bluetooth Low Energy. The printer also showed up as an AirPrint printer on my Apple devices.
Pros:
- small and compact footprint
- crisp laser printed Black and White pages
- seamless duplex printing
- easy setup
- HP core technology - laser printing
- relatively low per page cost, reasonable cost for a printer.
Cons:
- none so far

Like the clip on style.
on August 15, 2022

Nice pair of earbuds I like the clip on style this way they stay in place. I have the lime green which was interesting and unique. As for how they sound you really need to put in the custom size earbuds that are provided to gain a decent level of satisfaction when it comes to sound quality. I wouldn’t exactly call these high Fidelity but they’ll do the trick. I do like the charging case they seem to do a good job with charging each one of the earbuds. Also the controls on each side of the earbuds are pretty straightforward and it’s just a light capacitive touch on each of them to gain different functions. For instance I believe the right ear is volume up left ear is volume down. There are similar tap combinations that can be used for different functions which is real handy especially in a lower end earbuds like these. Of course these are water and sweat resistant so perfect for your workout.
Pros:
- fits well with some adjustment and using different size earbuds
- Nice design nice case.
Cons:
- Have to use one of the three sized earbud tips to have decent sound quality otherwise they sound pretty tinny.

nice hardware for the price
on July 28, 2022
Posted by: Bappy
First, lets set expectations for the hardware, the Kangaroo - Indoor/Outdoor Wired 1080p Security Camera is a pretty cool compact surveillance camera. While connectivity to your network is wireless, it does require a power connection so this does limit where you can put it, especially given that this is also able to be used outdoors. The little cube camera has a magnetic mount a portion which folds out a bit, nice as you can attach it to metal surfaces. I put the camera to good use to monitor the new cat we adopted, it was purrfectly suited to the mission, tracking movement night and day when my cat went to get food and water, sending alerts to my phone via the mobile app. It also picked up a mystery flying (apparently insect) occasionally at night setting off the motion detection, still have not figured out what it is (perhaps my house was built on an ancient burial ground). In any case the camera does what I want for a relatively cheap price.
Now to the negatives, the device seems to lean heavily on upselling of their cloud services. The setup experience required a mobile phone and asked for a myriad of personal information, including address and the app wanted all kinds of permissions including precise location services turned on all the time. This has been a pet peeve with me as of late, mobile apps that what permissions that don’t really make a lot of sense to me. I know the obvious items like setting up some of their other home security components and services, but in this case, I was not interested in those services or products – just the camera. Luckily, I still run 2.4ghz on my wireless router in addition to the now more common and modern 5ghz band, as this camera requires the older frequency, not a problem if your run dual bands, but some people don’t. In any case I did not have any issues streaming video at the lower throughput provided by 2.4ghz Wi-Fi.
Onto their cloud services, you need to subscribe to be able to use the video you could record locally on an SD card, yes local storage you need to pay for to access. Also speaking through the camera also requires a subscription as well as accessing any video in the cloud beyond 24 hours. I get it, they need to push their cloud services, but crippling an otherwise decent camera is a bit much.
Pros:
- Good 1080p video and sound, no issues streaming
- Compact and well built
- Decent mounting options
- Mobile app is pretty nice
- Can save video from cloud to your Camera roll as well as recording live video and still photos
Cons:
- Subscription required for anything recorded more than 24 hours ago and talking through the app to the camera
- Amount of Information requested during setup.
- Only 2.4ghz Wi-Fi connectivity
- Cloud recordings can’t be played back full screen in iOS app unless you save them to your Camera Roll first (Live videos can go full screen in the app, go figure).

Air purifier or giant bagel slicer ?
on July 19, 2022
Posted by: Bappy
As being highly allergic to dust and seasonal pollen clean air is always a priority for me. Add on top of that always liking a bit of air flowing in my direction and having a spouse who despises ceiling fans (after I installed one). The LG - PuriCare Smart HEPA AeroTower Air Purifying Fan, seems like a good fit for my household. Having the ability to clean air, rotate the whole unit in oscillating mode, using a diffuser to redirect air up and adjusting it to pinpoint air flow towards my favorite TV viewing spot without annoying the wife is a win win.
First off, the unit is fairly large and a bit unwieldy to remove from the box, luckily there is an indentation on the rear of the unit that you can place your hand into to move the unit (while gently holding the top front). You really don’t want to try to drag or slide the unit after it is on its rotating mount, as having is level is integral in ensuring the unit can swivel on its base in room circulating or oscillating mode. The air purifying wants to connect to your Wi-Fi to enable the LG Thin mobile app to work. Now that is great, but it would not integrate with the same app that controls my LG OLED TV. I had a real difficult time setting up the smart app, I wound up using an old iPhone 6s, which I essentially use as a remote control for smart devices. In reality I believe the app was hung up on access to precise location services being enabled, and also tracking your location all the time. I am very cognizant of privacy issues associated with Mobile apps and other than getting the local weather and outdoor air quality I’m unsure why this is even required, especially precise location. And adding the device to an existing LG Thin App without these permissions does not prompt you to add them and/or is not satisfied with not having precise location services turned off. OK, privacy rant over.
Otherwise after removing the protective bag covering the filter, I was able to fire up this Air Purifier and start experiencing better air and better circulation of it. The unit has a nice display which indicates current air quality and various modes as you change them. The included remote can also be used to control the unit (and attaches magnetically to the side of the unit for safekeeping). I prefer using the smart app, as settable options are easier to control and you can see the air quality trends in your house over time, as well as room temperature and humidity. As a matter of fact, my daughter unfortunately likes to vape and I prohibit that in my house, the historical data on air quality acts as big brother, indicating if she is vaping and contributing to the degradation of my indoor air quality while I am away, this actually works pretty flawlessly. As for the cooling ability, it has fan speed settings of 1 through 10 and a turbo mode which is the highest speed. Only in turbo mode is the noise from the fan noticeable, otherwise this is one of the quieter air purifiers/fans I have. Inclusion of a UV LED light to disinfect the fan blades is a feature in the model I have, the usefulness of this is debatable, although the concept is similar to a UV light used to bathe air conditioner coils in UV light. I have another air purifier that does something similar while air is pulled through the unit and the science clearly states that the air would need to linger in the unit to effectively be disinfected by the UV light. LG uses a different approach in killing germs which gather on the fan blades.
I have another air purifier from a manufacturer of air filters and that unit seems to do a better job at measuring indoor air pollution and has the advantage of its replaceable media (air filters) being substantially cheaper. That unit also has washable pre filters which can larger particles of dust before the main filter. The LG unit only has a single drum shaped HEPA filter which is said to last a year, however the replacement cost is at least $100. However, the LG unit does an effective job eliminating things like allergens, dust, lint, mold spores, bacteria, viruses, and pet dander, just using a bit of a different approach.
Pros:
- Great job filtering air
- LG Smart app, the same one I use to control my LG TV can be used.
- Easy to replace the HEPA filter
- nice design, and the ability to precisely target air flow direction is a great feature
- wife says it looks like a giant bagel slicer
Cons:
- large size makes it difficult to move, unpack, setup.
- Not sure the unit is as pollution sensitive as the other smart air filtering unit I have.
- Smart phone app setup, privacy concerns (why do you need precise location access on my mobile device all the time?)

If you’ve ever suffered a car accident, you know how important it can be to have a witness back you up. Now you can have one wherever you drive with the NS-DASH150 4K Front and Rear Dashboard Camera System. This handy two-camera system records in front of and behind your vehicle with wide angle lenses that minimize blind spots. 4K Ultra High-Definition video playback provides crystal-clear imagery—even when recording at night. Special G-sensor technology detects collisions and automatically saves and locks the recording, protecting the video for later reference. A loop recording feature overwrites old (unsaved) footage to conserve memory card space. These cameras have a temperature-resistant build that, along with secure adhesive and suction mounts, make for a durable and long-lasting design. Finally, this system plugs into your standard 12 V vehicle accessory port, requiring no additional power to operate. Whether you’re protecting yourself from future accidents or just wanting to record a nice Sunday drive, this front and rear dashboard camera system will have your back on the road ahead.

4k dashcam video at HD prices (plus rear cam)
on July 18, 2022
Posted by: Bappy
The Insignia Front and Rear dashcam system is an improvement on the previous HD version as the front camera will do 4K 30fps video. In addition, there is an actual second camera which mounts on your rear window, this one can do 1080p video. The thing I like about this version is the rear camera is not just on a swivel face rearward (which in my opinion didn’t really capture to well what was driving behind you due to contrast differences. This version attaches via wire to the rear unit and has all the normal features you would expect in a higher-level brand. The only thing missing is a touchscreen, but in order to maximize the non-touch screen on the front camera unit, the control buttons all reside on the bottom of the camera.
This duo of cameras comes in at a lower price point in comparison to other higher end dashcams, but still gets the job done.
The front facing camera does not have some of the features that more expensive brands do, so no GPS (thus no speed display), no wireless connectivity (files have to be copied off the micro-SD card – which is not included). But then again, the unit does have shock sensor, so if you get in a collision the video files will be marked protected and not looped over with new files.
The video recorded is crystal clear from both the front and rear cameras and really provides a good field of view. One of my other dashcams proved useful an accident I was involved in, clearly showing a vehicle making a left turn right in front me in an intersection. The video proved very useful for the responding officer so he could write up his report of the accident. I also sent the video to the insurance companies involved and they quickly cited the cause of the accident (which was the other driver). So this dashcams really becomes an indispensable tool to keep all accident parties honest. (Plus you never know when you'll capture a falling meteor).
Pros:
- Clear 4k 30fps or 1080p 60fps video from the front camera
- Full 1080p video from the rear camera
- Well built
- Reasonable price
Cons:
- None, as long as you are not looking for touch screen or advanced connectivity features.
- No GPS

good virus protection - constantly in your face
on July 14, 2022
Posted by: Bappy
I am a bit conflicted with the Norton 360 Platinum protection suite, while it has the familiar Norton Anti-virus interface buried deep into the product it often feels like the product won’t leave you alone. I’ve used other anti-virus suites and Norton has to be the most chatty of them all, especially soon after you install it. Reminding you to use the included VPN (more on that later), the Dark Web Monitoring, Cloud Backup, Password Manager and various browser integrations. Somewhere you can reduce the amount of prompts, popups and other items via some changes in settings, but the default configuration is just chatty.
Lets start with the Device Security, where you can scan your hard drives, removable drives, force updates of virus definitions manually (this happens in the background automatically) and review security logs.

Internet Security which monitors your Internet activity for various threats.
Backup, which can backup your PC and important data to the cloud (the version I have provides 100GB of storage) however you need to smartly configure what is backs up as if you have a large amount of picture or videos on your computer you will receive messages that your backup failed due to cloud storage constraints. Granted you can only configure this if you have administrative rights on your PC, that level of access is also needed to make any real configuration changes with the Norton setup. As part of standard best security practices, you should use an account on your PC that has plain user rights and only use a full administrator account for configuring changes to your applications or PC.
Performance, again you need full administrative right to Optimize the disk, you can do a limited file cleanup which only cleans up your browser cache (note to Norton, Internet Explorer is history, need to update the verbiage) and Windows Temporary files that are under your user profile. Startup manager requires Administrative privileges but will allow you to configure the startup behavior of your PC. Graphs will provide you a chart of activities Norton performed and when.
Any of the actions that require Administrator privileges should really prompt you to enter elevated credentials instead of just saying Access Denied.
Dark web monitoring is part of Norton Life Lock service and can be configured to monitor dark web activity with any of your personal information, such as address and email addresses as well as other Bank Accounts, Credit Cards, Phone Numbers, Drivers License, Mothers maiden name and Gamer tag. Now this is great service if you are comfortable with providing all this information in one place and with Norton (what if they get breached?). All of this opens a browser and is not integrated into the Norton Interface itself.
Secure VPN – most security suites offer VPN access which can help secure some of your information and web surfing activities. Most VPN connections actually slow your connection down from your PC or Mobile device as all you internet traffic through a setup of servers. Norton’s implementation does not use Open VPN, but IPSEC instead – from a performance perspective this is good, but it practices seemed to make my connection a bit buggy. Also, it assumes you only want to use a VPN when connected to unknown or public networks, not your home Wi-Fi if it is password protected. This behavior also occurs with the mobile device VPN in addition to cellular networks, again in practice the VPN seemed a bit flaky when I installed in on my iOS device. There are also reasons for masking your traffic and sites you visit when using your Internet Services Provider (ISP) or mobile phone carrier since some internet providers monitor your Internet traffic and sell or otherwise use this info and/or feed it to third parties. Thus I prefer to keep my VPN all the time. If you plan to use their VPN, you can only specify a country, not a specific city. Their VPN servers are well known, and most content providers will be able to detect that you are using a VPN (in case you were going to try to spoof Netflix or another service but connecting to a different country)
.
Password Manager – useful for some, annoying for me.
Parental Controls – useful for those with young offspring, again opens a browser to configure instead of doing it within the app.
Pros:
- Good performance, not a huge resource hog
- Fairly high rated as it catches a majority of threats
- Fairly configurable if you have Administrator rights, logging into an elevated account to do that is annoying.
- Cloud storage (100GB) with my subscription level (Platinum)
- VPN included, albeit not the best in class
- Software Firewall included and mostly configure itself
Cons:
- VPN automatic configuration seems a bit overbearing and the connection sometimes varies in speed and connectivity.
- The product out of the box is too chatty, need to change items (admin access required) to quiet it down.
- Antitrack is not included in Deluxe.
- VPN is only configurable by country, not a specific city within one, most services seem to be within the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud.
- Limited amount of VPN servers worldwide.

High end gaming mouse - flexible connectivity
on July 10, 2022
Posted by: Bappy
The Alienware Tri-Mode Wireless Gaming mouse is a gaming mouse which can connect via 2.ghz wireless, Bluetooth or tethered USB-C cord. It has eight programable buttons and fits in your hand nicely for gaming sessions or when working on an application the needs detailed control. It has RGB LED lighting accents which will sync colors when controlling it the Alienware Command center.
I found this mouse provides good control and ergonomically fits well in medium to larger size hands. The mouse has detail control up to 26,000 DPI tracking 650 IPS and sensors capable of 50G of maximum acceleration. The buttons have individual spring mechanisms (left/right) that are supposed to be more durable than spring mechanisms (I have run into this on a few cheap mouses, where the left/right buttons lose their clicking ability).
Overall, the finish of the mouse is pretty slick and smooth, but still rests in your hand securely it has a feel of quality, with a premium build.
I have not yet used it in either of the wireless modes to test battery life and any latency, given the overall quality of the mouse I expect it to get close to the 420-hour battery life and to be responsive.
Pros:
- Quality build, feels good in your hand
- Multiple ways to connect the mouse (tethered, Bluetooth, 2.4ghz)
- RGB LED lighting
- Responsive, with good performance
Cons:
- A bit pricey

great little Bluetooth speaker
on July 10, 2022
Posted by: Bappy
This is a compact, rubberized Bluetooth speaker branded to look like Marshall amps. As a matter of fact, you can even "stack" them with others of the same model, so you can wind of with a “Marshall stack” I’m sure if you are looking at this speaker you get the reference. Control of the speaker rests with a gold metal button on the front of the unit which will power it on/off, control volume, fast forward/rewind and track forward/backward. The unit comes with a USB-A to USB-C plug which goes into the side of the speaker to charge it. Also, there is a handy red LED which shows one to five bars to indicate battery level, a nice visible touch. I had no problem with paring it, although it appears with a device name as "Willen" the manufacturer
The speaker sounds pretty good for a relatively small speaker, with a bit of tweaking of EQ on your device it can sound a lot better than a flat setting. As for battery life I haven’t really gone from a full charge down to empty, but expect to get the battery life that is advertised.
Pros:
- Good sound quality with some tweaking of your devices EQ
- USB-C plug for charging the battery
- Battery charging/level indicator
- Built in carrying handle
- Sturdy build, rubberized
Cons:
- none yet.

Performs well and is handy accessory
on July 5, 2022

The iOttie - Velox 7.5 watt wireless charger/mount for you car does a good job keeping your Magsafe compatible iPhone in a position to receive a wireless charge. It charges my device relatively quickly for a car based wireless charger and is a good addition. While using a Magsafe compatible case I had no issue effectively charging my device and keeping secured. With other cases, no so much - so just a word of caution if you have a device with a thicker case, this will likely not be either an effective wireless charger or mount.
As for the build of the wireless mount, it is a quality built and has a pretty good mechanism for attaching to most car AC vents, the plus is also keeps your device cool (providing you have your AC on) as heat buildup is sometimes an issue with wireless charging and cases. The mount has a wire for powering the wireless charger, it has a USB-C end which you need to plug in to a compaible charger or car jack, the unit comes with a USB-C to lighter power receptacle adapter so if you have an avaialble receptacle this works well, although it seems the the lighter type car power receptable is quickly becoming an extinct technology as both my 2022 cars only have one in the dashboard.
Pros:
- works well with Magsafe accessories
- for wireless charging it does a fine job
- nice clip to vent mount.
Cons:
- thick cases cause problems with charging and mounting if they don't meet Magsafe specs.

effective cordless water flosser
on July 5, 2022
Posted by: Bappy
The Philips Sonicare Power Flosser 3000 Cordless uses water and a bit of pressure to clean the spaces between your teeth and gums. It is very similar to anther well know product which had the majority of market share with this type of dental hygiene appliance. Being cordless provides an additional level of flexibility as you use It without a power connection. In a general sense this unit does an excellent job of cleaning your teeth without the hassle of floss and the irritation it can cause (and sometimes get stuck in the gaps). Using water makes this process much easier. This unit has three power or pressure modes, gentle, medium and full.
A few observations, the unit cleans your teeth well, however I found myself needing to till the reservoir twice, once for the top and bottom teeth. Using this is pretty easy but caution it can get very messy trying complete a full cleaning session over the sink. Others have suggested that since this is wireless it may make sense to try to use it in the shower. I usually don’t practice dental hygiene in the shower, but perhaps it is the key to avoiding making a mess.
In any case I found this device useful and a good tool to have in your dental care toolbox.
Pros:
- Like the three power modes
- Cleans in between teeth very well
- Better than traditional floss that can shred and become stuck in between teeth
- Quick cleaning cycle does a good job in a minimal amount of time.
Cons:
- Messy, gets water everywhere
- I found you need to fill water tank twice during a cleaning session: bottom and top teeth
- Clothing gets soaked
