Does this system require or allow for a separate amplifier or receiver?
I don't know a lot about surround sound systems, but I know that some systems incorporate an AV receiver or an amplifier that powers the speaker system. Is this something that is required with this system if I am connecting it to an HDTV? Or is the amplifier part of the sound bar or something? Thank you!
No, this system replaces a conventional reciever with the sound bar which acts as a center, right, and left speaker, and a reciever. The subwoofer is what powers the two rear speakers

Doesn Optical Output pass through the dolby signal from a connected device?
If I plug my pc into this tv using an hdmi cord and then I run the optical out from the tv to my surround sound receiver, will it pass through the dolby digital signal to my receiver? (Assuming I'm watching a dolby encoded source from my pc).
If your receiver has the ability to, just plug the hdmi from the computer into it, and run one to the tv. Otherwise, it's a toss up on that. Usually the sound gets compressed when it runs through the tv
