A Useful Cleaning Companion
on November 26, 2015
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD

BISSELL - SmartClean Robot Vacuum -Titanium/Teal
Do you find yourself choosing whether to take a day off to shop and just relax or, instead, clean the apartment/house? Why choose? Do both. This new category of appliance, the robotic vacuum, has cleaning the floors covered. This SmartClean Vacuum will work tirelessly, randomly roaming around your floors, sucking up dust and dirt, and then returning to charge up before it continues the task.
SUMMARY: This is very effective robotic vacuum. It relentlessly wandered without issues across the carpets, tile, bare wood floors, and most of the throw rugs in our home. It was easy to empty and recharge. The instructions leave out some critical information; hopefully I can help correct some omissions. Setting up a convenient “home” for the Bissell was tricky for us. But, my wife is not giving up this new dust-fighting companion without a fight. This is an appliance that contributes to making life more convenient at a reasonable price.
SETUP NOTES: We’re not able to meet some of the setup preconditions in our home. The Bissel needs 50 continuous wall inches, in the vicinity of an outlet, for it to re-dock successfully for auto recharging. The dock must be secured flush to the wall, and flat on the floor. We have our own preconditions, and they conflict. We need to keep walkways clear and prefer not to have our little robot vac on display. For reasons of design aesthetics, room layout, and walkway safety, it just isn’t possible to find the ideal 50” home base. Our walls also have a 3/4” quarter round at the wall-floor intersection which required a slight modification to the vacuums dock mount. So, we’ve made some concessions. We’ve given up the convenient re-docking feature, accomplishing that manually, while our Bissel’s home station is located where it’s convenient, if less functional. Despite giving up this desirable feature, my wife still wouldn’t give up her new, wandering vacuuming friend.
I gave the Bissel a full charge. Then, I HELD down the CENTER BUTTON and simultaneously pressed the pattern control button (MODE) until the desired AUTO pattern was set; I followed that with a press of both CENTER BUTTON and the +/- control to set vacuum suction on low. Then we repeatedly pressed the CENTER BUTTON until 99 was showing and the 13”, 4lb robot was on its way for the next 90 minutes. I set up Bissel’s included “invisible wall” to exclude our complex exercise room maze and this worked nicely.
PERFORMANCE: All floor types were easily negotiated. Transitions were handled, eventually. A few failed efforts were eventually overcome without any interventions from us except for a couple of thick throw-rugs with thick pads. The Bissel worked its way around these two and went on its way. An especially nice feature is the low profile which lets the Bissel continue unimpeded under sofas and beds we sometimes ignore when our backs are tired. Even out-of-reach corners don’t seem to be a problem. An inspection of the dust bin after a cycle around what looked to us like a clean house showed a variety of dust globs, hair, dirt particles and some wire clippings I must have lost track of. Suction appears more that adequate for the task.
NOISE LEVEL (measured with iPhone Decibel App): Like that “tree falling in a forest” question, if there is no one there to actually hear the sound, does it even matter? If it does, you should know that . . . . our very quiet home has an average 42dB noise level with NO appliances operating. This Bissel, from 1 meter away, measures 72dB on wood floors (which reflect more sound into the room) and 67dB when it’s on carpet (which absorbs sounds more effectively). From across the room I measured mid 50dB, a level unlikely to disturb a phone call.
My Best Buy number: 2355788039
What's great about it: Goes places no man has cleaned before.
What's not so great: Our unique setup conflicted with the robot's requirements.

Forget What You Know About TVs
on November 19, 2015
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD

The LG 65EF9500 will make you question anything you imagine TVs should look like. I've been immersed in the image on this TV for only about 4 hours as I write this. I'm blown away. I used the initial out-of-the-box settings, and then I carefully made adjustments using recommendations provided by CNET, The differences were subtle, and my changes were probably unnecessary, but they are out there for owners who like to fuss with their TVs.
First, on standard TV. Crisp, colorful images, all dependent on the quality of the source, jump off of the beautiful screen. The sound quality isn't bad either, but please, get a soundbar, or better yet, a home theater system to go with this TV.
The LG includes a full suite of Apps. I went to the provided Youtube 4K movies that are free, online. Oh my. Oh my. Wife and I couldn't stop saying, "oh my". Beautiful beyond all imaginations.
I have an Amazon Prime account. Used the included Amazon App to enable my account on this TV. We went to see if they have some 4k free TV. Yep. Went back to Orphan Black which was apparently shot in 4k. Oh my. Oh my. Beautiful images beyond all measure.. Every subtle detail of make-up, wardrobe, city streets are as if you are standing in the scene the day it was shot. Checked out older X-Files Series-1 from 2 decades ago. Only 1080p. Spectacular. As was Star Trek original series. Spectacular. The Amazon App on the LG is as good as any stand-alone App. Blu-ray DVDs viewed with the TV are gorgeous.
This TV explodes all ideas you might have about how good a TV can look. Detailed. Colorful. Crisp. Exceptional contrast.. Perfectly fine brightness. And, it's even fun to use. The LG WEB interface is easy and convenient. The TVs aesthetics are very attractive. Slim. clean looking, and taking minimal space for a large screen. Love it. I've had only high end TVs for many years. None are even close.

Very nice entry level Soundbar
on November 16, 2015
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
from Austin
Summary: Attractive, easy to set-up, the Insignia 2.1 Soundbar provides a nicely balanced sound that easily improves upon the sound of (probably) every flat screen TV out there. I like it and will try matching it up with a couple of my TVs. It certainly sounds better than the TV.
Why do I need a Soundbar? I love the new flatscreen TVs which offer beautiful pictures, take up almost no space, and can connect to all types of media sources. I don’t love the sound of these new TVs. Voices can be hard to hear clearly, the bass is phony, and it’s hard to get any volume that isn’t shrill. Trying to enjoy an action flick with special sound effects is a joke. I’ll predict that every TV owner will eventually go out looking for better sound for their flat screen. Soundbars are one of several solutions.
The Insignia 2.1 speaker with subwoofer is probably considered an entry level solution. Setting up required very little effort. Read the instructions. There are a few procedures you need to accomplish to get sound. I did a quick test setup to make sure I liked the Soundbar before I committed to hanging it on the wall. I plugged both the “bar” and the subwoofer into a power-strip (not provided). Then I connected my test signal (I used my iPhone(!!!), but a TV is the usual input) using a 3.5mm-to-RCA jack cable (provided) to the “bar.” Make sure power-strip is on. I had to be sure to aim the remote at the front of the soundbar, pressed the power-on button, then pressed and held the Blue-tooth button on the remote. (BlueTooth connected automatically the next time.) Sound immediately filled the room.
Nice, smooth voices, far richer than the typical TV sound, and a nice bass rounding out the bottom. The remote let me adjust the tone to switch between a natural balance (they call it THEATER), to a sound that emphasized voices (they call it NEWS), to somewhere in between. This SoundBar can get quite loud and fill a good sized room.
Things to know before you buy: You’re TV will need to have either an audio (RCA jacks) output or an optical output. Go into your TV settings to select external speakers — this will shut off your internal TV speakers. The sound bar is slim; it should easily fit under a TV whether its mounted on a wall or sitting on its stand. It’s very attractive, and big, but it generally disappears from view. The subwoofer is not boomy or unnaturally loud. There is a volume control and it can be brought to satisfying levels, but not furniture shaking levels. Theater level sub-bass volumes are the reason you buy much moe expensive home theater speakers and electronics. Let’s be reasonable. This Insignia SoundBar is an easy piece of electronics to live with.
What's great about it: Easy to set-up, nice sound improvement
What's not so great: Not full surround sound

Stunning video, demo quality

I love the recent efforts to blend traditional widescreen (2.40:1) with IMAX's full-frame (1.78:1) images in the same movie. I first saw this in a recent Transformer movie, and it's quite neat. The transitions are seamless because they flow with the film. You have to be especially attentive, despite the dramatic flips between having the wide image (black top and bottom borders) and no borders. Beyond this cool gimmick, this is a wonderful opportunity to show off your home theater.

Wonderful classic sci-fi film of a Crichton book
on February 17, 2015

from AUSTIN
Michael Crichton's books have had a mixed success translated to movies. Viewers universally love Jurassic Park and even Coma. On the other hand, does anyone watch Congo or Timeline? The Andromeda Strain was brilliantly brought to the big screen by Robert Wise and is every bit as entertaining now as it was when I saw it in a movie theater. This is a nice addition to our film collection. it has 1970s pacing --- this is classic, thoughtful sci-fi, not modern, noisy film-making. You've been warned.
The movie has the original graphics and a wonderfully (remastered?) widescreen print which is far superior to my letter-boxed DVD. Not even close. Bright colors, crisp images, natural film grain, with no artificial edge enhancement. This is a wonderful presentation that is not likely to be improved upon.

My experience has been quite good. This was a purely indulgent purchase. We come from a generation when you never want to run out of food or miss an opportunity during store food specials. This LG ends those fears. It simply soaks up frozen and refigerated foods. We love the open cabinet space and various door and specialty spaces.
I've placed calibrated thermometers in multiple locations in the frdge. It took almost 3 days for the temps to settle down, but now they are within a 4 degree range of the settings. (The LG does NOT show the temp, ONLY the settings. You must use your own thermometer.) The door space in my unit is only a couple of degrees higher, and only during periods of use. The drawers are usually colder than the open space of the fridge. My situation may be unique.
The low noise level is especially welcome. We loved our previous Maytag, but this is another level of quiet. We wondered about the extra depth, but the approx. 2" are not an issue for us. Tighter kitchens may present a problem.
I also called customer service with LG during the 1st 48 hours to understand why the fridge was taking so long to reach the settings. There is a language issue. The pleasant person on the phone struggled with anything other than the simplest presentation of facts, had no appreciation for humor, and was fairly quick to over-react to criticism. Her attachment to the script was frustrating. Most importantly, telling a customer that it's perfectly fine and normal for the temp setting to be 37 and the actual temp to be 42 is wrong. She did not understand that the "setting" is NOT the actual temperature. She then fussed around and helped me cycle through the demo/operational settings which may or may not have helped. The temperature did settle in another 24 hours nad has been perfect for weeks. Customer service needs some work..
I should also add that this purchase was originally made at another long-time national retailer who utterly failed to complete the delivery due to incompetence. Best Buy/Pacific handled sale and delivery with wonderful professionalism.

A bargain photo printer with easy wired/less setup
on December 28, 2013

I use it for:Photo printing
Verified Purchase:Yes
I won't write reviews until a month of more of use. I've already had a reasonable period to watch ink usage, compare photo prints with commercial printers, and use with my laptop and tablet. The Brother works flawlessly.
My 1st test was printing out an 8x10" color photo and comparing with a Snapfish print. Very slight color saturation difference, which I could easily correct. I don't want anyone to think this is an alternative to a high quality specialty printer with 8-11 color inks. But, considering the 3 color ink processing, you will be pleasantly surprised by the quality, ink usage and price equation. I can wallpaper my house with photos for very little!!
Wireless setup was quick and easy for my Mac environment. Black & white printouts are fine. Paper handling is reliable --- and I pull high quality gloss photo paper through the Brother without problems.

A grand name continues its wondeful tradition

Verified Purchase:Yes
I owned Marantz 30 years ago when it was among the premium of brands. These newer home theater electronics are a reminder of why Marantz was held in such high regard. Performance is exceptional, no feature is left out, and setup is very easy despite the features.
I'll admit that I ignored the instructions and simply wired everything together before I started the built-in setup routine. I'd go so far as to recommend the same to anyone else. It makes little sense to connect only the TV so you can follow on-screen instructions to connect speakers and external devices. Those instructions seem to ignore the difficulty of installing into those built-in cabinets most end users now use.
Speaker setup results in especially nice sound quality. Device setup is just as easy and the Marantz allows customized menus so family can recognize them. Internet channel recognition was straightforward after the network was connected. IPOD recognition and Airplay worked flawlessly. Thought I'd learn to use Pandora, as long as it was available. Easy and fun to do. Followed instructions to upgrade firmware. Worked. Followed instructions to add the IPHONE app for receiver control. Worked. I may have forgotten to note that everything sounds great.
I use Logitech's Harmony ONE remote, so I can't comment on the Marantz's. It does have too many hard to read small buttons and the layout is awkward. Who needs it? Get a Logitech and make your family happy. I'd like to balance this review with some complaints. Still working on that.

Edit of review: about that freezer middle drawer
October 5, 2014
I would probably lower the score by 1/2 star after several months of use. You may feel differently. . . . That cute middle slide drawer in the freezer needs a redesign. It occasionally pops out of its track with very little effort. It does not pop back in quite so easily. We've not yet figured out what we've done wrong but with unusual caution and we can avoid the problem. Busier families with kids will not be so fortunate. It'll be an aggravation.

Google (runs my) Home
By TECHBEENGOOD
Google Home
“Hey, Google . . . play “Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young” and so it was done. Google Home used the Pandora account I just entered, and a rather smooth, well balanced music playback began. It could get loud without harshness out of a cute beer-mug sized device. Without any other command, Pandora was now playing. Seemed like magic to my visitors who were listening in to my conversation with Google Home while I was setting it up.
Set up took less than 10 minutes, but I don’t have many of the partner products (NEST, Philips Hue, SmartThings, IF) that Google Home operates with right out of the box. But Google Home has a nice bag of tricks with which to work. With the right Chromecast enabled speakers, you can apparently get the house rocking relying on Pandora, Spotify, Google Play, Youtube Music, or Tunein to provide the tunes.
Both my wife an I are getting a kick out of challenging Google to provide weather reports, news updates, or filling in our grocery list (using Google Keep). It’ll do a very accurate job of answering trivia questions and has no trouble deciphering our voice commands. It could provide the names of local restaurants and addresses, but couldn’t schedule a table for us. It could list where movies were playing, but not when. Google Home easily picked out our voices over a playing TV and was quick to respond. It wasn’t ready with TV schedules, however . . yet.
For me, the real excitement begins if/when Google operates my Logitech Harmony Theater system hubs, my HomeBrite Devices, or maybe lets us order from some online stores. I have no trouble recommending the Google Home device, but I’m also expecting ti to expand its partner list. These are wonderfully useful gadgets, but they rely on Google to play nicely with a variety of other products that I want to control.

Have you got "multiple" networks? Read.
December 7, 2016
I discovered an aggravation in recent days with my Google Home. if you've set up a roaming or extended network in your home, there is a potential problem. (Others with a simple, single router, network can stop reading.) At some point, typically after moving your Google Home or manually quitting then restarting WiFI, you may discover Google Home can't connect to your network. Huh? You've got it extended everywhere in your house and you have a problem ONLY with Google Home? Seems silly. Well, Google Home wants to see your original setup device (phone/tablet) on the same BRANCH of your network. Anything else creates a crisis. Start over, be sure to find the Google device with your setup App on your phone/tablet, and re-establish the connection. Be patient, it will reconnect.

Roomba, you're hired.
By TECHBEENGOOD from Austin
I WILL volunteer to vacuum. Of course, I haven’t developed my wife’s skills or strategies for coping with our home’s diverse floor landscape. All those transitions to wood, tile, various carpet types and back again, through a forest of chair legs, blind hallways, low hanging sofas, beds and chairs, and scattered debris, most of it mine. I’m a work in progress. Which brings us to this iRobot Roomba 890. Kudos to the teams of skilled designers, engineers, of focus groups who built and tested a robot that so successfully accomplishes that which has confounded me for so many years. My wife, our specialist, will have the final judgment on the Roomba.
Setup requires a minimal amount of planning. The Roomba’s charging station needs to be located where the Roomba can find it, be plugged in and docked. At this point, after a few hours to fully charge, you have a working automated, intelligent vacuum. Hate technology? Don’t need it. Press the CLEAN button (x2) whenever you’re ready to vacuum. For me, it’s as I’m heading out the door. And I love technology, just not vacuuming tech. Most others will want to take advantage of the Roomba’s ability to schedule vacuuming sessions, get notifications, and monitor cleaning cycles from the app. Once it’s on your home Wi-Fi, a connected Roomba will work with Amazon’s Alexa.
I’m not going to detail the Wi-Fi connection process. It’s not that it’s lengthy but it requires your close attention to details. My efforts required some restarts, but then, I’m notorious for trying everything first with minimal scanning of the instructions. Don’t try that with the Roomba. Also, you may be jolted by the “unsecured network message” (on the iPhone), but that only indicates a temporary setup condition while configuring the nearby Roomba. Roomba’s online support provides easy-to-follow help if you get into trouble. Don’t be reluctant to reset or restart, as this solved all my issues.
How does this Roomba 890 work? Navigation is effective, as it deals with obstacles, drops, rises, and transitions without problems. Watching the Roomba negotiate my tangle of wires, sneak under our low sofas (low even for our manual upright), and easily climb over our various throw and area carpets is impressive. In places we were sure it would get stuck, it either solved the predicament or avoided it. The combination of sensors, thoughtfully designed rollers and spinners, and logic makes these Roombas special. Oh, and it is surprisingly quiet. We didn’t have to adjust the TV volume, even as it maneuvered around our chairs. At just shy of 90 minutes it found its way back to the charging dock.
My wife’s evaluation? She’s quite willing to leave our home in the tireless, relentless, fastidious care of our new robotic housecleaner. The iRobot Roomba 890 is pretty competent. I think you know my feelings.

I checked again
August 1, 2017
Well, now you've got me wondering if I was sloppy in my review. So, I ran another test today, several weeks after my initial posting. I set my Roomba off on its task by double-clicking the CLEAN button. Set my stopwatch . . . and . . . you can almost set a clock by my Roomba. On my iPhone I got 1:29:10.25 (89 minutes) of vacuuming. Yes, I have 85% hardwood floors (with several large oriental rugs), tile in the bathrooms, and the remainder in a carpeted bedroom. And I do hear the motor working a bit harder on carpet. Your experience will certainly differ, but I'm confident you'll get well past an hour.

It appears to sense "tilt' or perhaps some other feature of a carpet, but our m6 never succeeded in climbing onto our carpets, as the thresholds were in the way. When we intentionally placed it on a carpet, it just stopped.

Use the Google Smart Light Starter Kit to control the lights using just your voice. Set up in a snap: just plug in Google Home Mini, screw in the GE C-Life smart light bulb, and download the Google Home app to get started. Then just say "Hey Google" to dim, brighten, turn on and turn off the lights."

Is there a monthly fee added for usage?

NO. Google's Assistant operates using your network and nothing other than any Internet Service is required.

Can I use this to turn off my lights while I am away from home? Also, do I get the starter kit and then multiple bulbs or do I need to get a box thing for each room? Thanks so much

I tested that myself, today. Just before heading home from an appointment. I opened the Google Home App, found my devices list, and there were my lights. I turned them both on and set two different brightness levels. When we got home, both lights were on, and set to the different brightness levels. It works.

The Google Assistant device nears to be nearby to find the lights for setup. Unless your lights are within the 40 ft range (suggested by Google/GE) I don't think they can be controlled. That said, each Assistant can control a lot of lights, all with unique names (such as, Master 1, Master 2, Master 3, etc.).

Enjoy Full HD viewing with this 25-inch HP micro-edge display. It has one VGA and two HDMI inputs for versatile, high-definition connectivity, and its edge-to-edge panel lets you opt for a clean-looking multi-monitor setup. Play video games smoothly thanks to the AMD FreeSync technology of this thin HP micro-edge display.

What vesa mount adapter do I need to mount this display?

I looked for a VESA mount array of screw holes, but there are none to be found. I suggest (and NOT facetiously) you consider automobile strength VELCRO to attach this screen, because it only weighs 7 lbs. It's possible HP has a solution using an accessory of some sort, but I didn't pursue that.

Does the key fob come with this? I asking because you have it showing in the pictures. Thank you

There seems to be a new set of systems or packages with this new version of the product. This particular system package -- "PROTECT" -- did not include the Key Fob.

Do you have to have the contract to use it and to get notifications on your cellphone?

You would have to enroll in one of the PLANS to get notification. A PLAN brings the SimpliSafe response center into the loop. Without any PLAN, you are simply using the system SIREN(s) to scare off the intruder.
