Finally Tempted Me To Switch From Android
on June 19, 2017
Posted by: Daniel
from Eagan, MN
Verified Purchase:Yes
PROS:
- Fantastic camera
- Great battery life
- Great build quality
- Timely updates (no guessing if/when you'll get the new OS update)
- Local support at any Apple store
- IP67 water+dust resistance
CONS:
- No quick/fast charge
- No headphone jack (if don't own bluetooth headphones/earbuds)
- Only 5GB of iCloud storage (you pay for more)
I've been an Android user since the original Motorola Droid came out in late 2009 (and was a Blackberry user before that). I never thought that I would "switch sides", but lately I've become more frustrated with Android's fragmentation problem (less than 10% of Android users are on Nougat, and Android "O" is going live later this fall). I hated not knowing if/when my phone was going to see the new OS, meanwhile my mom's iPhone 5C (which is almost 4 years old) has the latest version of iOS.
It's been over three weeks since trading in my Galaxy S7 for the iPhone 7 Plus, and I couldn't be happier about switching to the iPhone.
I love the battery life on the 7 Plus. I charge my phone in the morning while drinking coffee and going over emails, use it through the day, leave it on my nightstand over night, and then charge it up again the next morning. I can't think of a single time where I needed to grab a charger in the middle of the day or evening.
The camera is great, but it's not a massive improvement over the S7. The zoom and "portrait mode" are cool, but I don't really use them most days. Photos and videos turn out great, I can't complain about the camera on this phone.
What I CAN complain about is iCloud storage. $1.00 a month for 50GB of storage isn't going to break the bank or anything, but it feels bad when even Microsoft gives you 30GB of free storage with OneDrive, while Apple only gives you 5GB.
Some people complain about the lack of a headphone jack, but I prefer my bluetooth headphones and earbuds, so I don't mind at all. Apple does include the lightning adapter in the box so you can still connect traditional 3.5mm headphones/earbuds to your iPhone.

Why Pay More?

I wanted to just leave a lightning cable at my desk to charge up my iPhone 7+, but unfortunately the cable that comes with the phone is too short for what I need.
Thankfully Best Buy offers their Insignia branded lightning cable in 6-feet length, which is exactly what I needed at a much lower price than what Apple wants for their own cable.
Why pay more for the same product?

Amazing Audio and Build Quality
on May 26, 2017
Posted by: Daniel
from Eagan, MN
PROS:
- Long battery life
- Great sound quality
- Comfortable to wear for long periods of time, even with glasses
- Make and receive calls
- Can activate Google Assistant with tap controller
CONS:
- Easy to hit the tap control by accident when increasing the volume or trying to skip tracks
- May not be able to use when connected to laptop with only USB-C ports
Audio-Technica is one of my favorite headphone manufacturers, I've always loved both their sound and build quality, so when I wanted to get a nice pair of bluetooth headphones it was an easy decision to pick these up.
After unboxing them, I connected them to my laptop to charge up before using (I'll talk more about connecting to a PC in a moment). They charged up quicker than I expected, but that was probably due to shipping with a decent charge. Still, it's a good idea to fully charge a new device before using. Audio-Technica claims you can get about 15 hours from these, and they're not kidding. Your mileage may vary, but with low volume, I was able to get a little over 16 hours over three days of use on these.
Audio quality is, as expected, really great. These are closed-back headphones with leather ear cups, so you get really decent noise isolation. Sound leak is very minor, especially if you listen to music at a lower volume, making these great for listening to music while studying in a library.
Pairing these with my phone and laptop was very quick and easy. You also have the option to pair these with your phone via NFC if you want. The bluetooth connection was great, but I did notice occasional connection issues (about once an hour) when paired with my 2016 HP Spectre 13. When connected to my Samsung S7, I didn't notice any connection issues whatsoever, so it may just be my laptop.
Speaking of connecting to my laptop, I was unable to use the headphones while charging from my laptop. My laptop only has USB-C ports, which might be the problem. The including cable for charging and higher-quality listening is a USB-A to micro USB. If your laptop has USB-A ports, you probably won't run into the same problem I did. This is really my only complaint about the headphones, I wish that they went with USB-C, but it's not a dealbreaker.
BOTTOM LINE:
These live up to the Audio-Technica reputation for great sound and build quality, but I wish they went with USB-C for charging and connecting to your computer. You might not get the full experience if you have a computer with only USB-C ports. This isn't a dealbreaker, since you likely want these for wireless listening, which you'll enjoy for long periods of time before you need to charge them up thanks to their roughly 15 hours of battery life (depending on your usage).

Small, but powerful
on May 2, 2017
Posted by: Daniel
from Eagan, MN
I was surprised how small the actual soundbar really was. It's roughly 2/3 the size of our old soundbar, but the sound quality is amazing compared to the old Insignia bar we used. It's a Sony product, so of course amazing quality is expected (and they delivered).
Don't let the smaller size fool you, this soundbar not only sounds great and clear, but it can get pretty loud too.
The subwoofer is pretty decent for its size as well. The subwoofer uses a wireless connection, which gives you the freedom to move it wherever you want (one diagram in the manual suggested under the couch in front of the TV).
The bluetooth feature is great and I was able to pair it with my phone quickly. It's great for just streaming music while reading, playing board games, or even cleaning.

For whatever reason, Nintendo assumed that anyone buying the "New" 3DS XL would have an older DS or 3DS and just use their old adapter.
Sure, this adapter isn't expensive, but it really should have been included with their consoles.

Pleasantly Surprised
on April 19, 2017

When I saw the size of this bluetooth speaker, I really wasn't expecting too much from it. I knew it would be better than the speaker on my Galaxy S7, but I didn't know how much better it would be.
I liked the idea of using this in my car, which is an older model that doesn't have bluetooth, aux port, or cassette (so no adapter). Since this speaker has a clip, I could put it on my seatbelt for hands-free calling (cheaper option than other bluetooth speakers designed for the car).
The audio quality really is amazing for something this small. It won't replace my Bose Soundlink speaker, but nobody would ever expect it to.
I love this speaker. Not only is audio quality great (for its size), but when used for phone calls, the other person says sound quality is great on their end as well.

Excellent Console Gaming Headset
on March 25, 2017
Posted by: Daniel
PROS:
- Good build quality
- Retractable mic
- In-line volume control and mic mute toggle
- Closed headphone design for sound isolation
- Decent sound for games
- Pretty comfortable for long periods of time (even with glasses)
CONS:
- They're large and look kind of goofy outside your house
- Sound quality isn't that great for just listening to music
- Bulky for travel
My previous headset for my PS4 were the PlayStation Silver wired headset. Compared to those, the Kraken Pros are AMAZING. I'm not a big fan on-ear headphones (the PlayStation Silver headset), so I'm glad to finally own a pair of over-ear headphones (Kraken Pro). The sound isolation alone makes the Kraken Pro the better headset. As closed-back over-ear headphones, the Kraken Pro offer decent sound isolation, but don't confuse sound isolation for noise cancellation (you still hear the outside world).
Playing games like Doom or the Arkham series, games where you need to hear enemies from all directions, is fantastic. Voices and sound effects are loud and clear. It feels even more satisfying beating up thugs as Batman or blowing up demons in Doom with this headset.
I have my own separate headphones for listening to music, but I know some people use one headset for everything. If you want a gaming headset that's also fantastic for just listening to music, you might be disappointed with the Kraken Pro. Sound effects in games sound amazing, but just listening to music (compared to my Sennheiser HD558) sounds like you're using some cheap sub-$20 headphones. Again, I doubt anyone looking to buy these will use them outside of gaming, but I just wanted to give a heads up if you were thinking about just owning one headset in your house (don't).
The mic is decent, I haven't had any complaints from friends. I love that the mic is both retractable and flexible. The in-line volume control also has a switch to mute the mic as well.
Overall, I'm very happy to replace my old PS4 headset with these. I really love using this headset for gaming (I'll stick to my Sennheisers for music though) on my PS4.

Exceeded my expectations
on March 17, 2017
Posted by: Daniel
Pros:
- Removes pet hair and dirt from carpet you didn't even know was there.
- Once you get used to the ball turning, maneuvering around furniture becomes so much easier than with a traditional vacuum.
- The "turbine tool" attachment makes removing pet hair from furniture quick and easy.
- Rinsable filters always a plus (no wasting time with disposable filters).
Cons:
- While I love the "turbine tool" for cleaning up hair from furniture, there doesn't seem anywhere to attach it to the vacuum while not in use (like you can with the "stair tool" or extension for cleaning stairs or removing webs from the ceiling).
- There's no light on the front of the vacuum for cleaning in dim spots around the house (such as under desks or beds).
- This vacuum isn't the heaviest one I've used, but it's still pretty heavy. Something to keep in mind for cleaning stairs.
The "meh":
- This vacuum does such an amazing job cleaning carpet, the collection chamber fills up pretty quickly, so you'll likely need to empty it (at least once) every time, depending on the size of your home.
- The way the small "wheels" on the back work to prop up the vacuum when not in use will not always stay "locked" while moving the vacuum, so I find myself just carrying it around (and it's not a light vacuum).
Full Review:
Our old vacuum geared towards homes with pets is almost ten years old and feels like it's just not cleaning as well as it used to. After using this Dyson Ball Animal 2, it became painfully (and almost embarrassingly) clear that the old vacuum was leaving behind a lot of fine dust/dirt and pet hair. I had to empty the Dyson collection chamber from just our living room and hallway alone, and I used the old vacuum a little over a week ago!
One of the allures of a Dyson vacuum is that it doesn't use tradition four wheels, but a large "ball" for turning and guiding the vacuum. It takes some time to adjust, but I don't want to go back to the other competitors now, it's just so easy to maneuver around furniture compared to before. A few reviews for the previous version mentioned that it's difficult to push the vacuum on carpeted areas, but it didn't seem that I was putting in more effort to move it compared to my old vacuum.
While I don't recall the last time I saw a vacuum with disposable filters, I'm glad that trend continues here. The Ball Animal 2 has large filters that are easy to get to and clean. The manual states that you should clean them at least once every two months, but with how much fine dirt/dust and hair this vacuum collects, I'll probably clean them once a month.
I can't really say too many bad things about this, since it does a fantastic job at what I need: cleaning up dirt/dust and cat hair (and very well at that). However, there are a few things that I wish Dyson could have changed with this design. The biggest thing that bothers me about this is the lack of a light on the front of the cleaner head for dim areas, such as under desks and beds. My old vacuum has it, the smaller vacuum we have for upstairs has it, and it just feels odd not having a light with this unit. I wish the vacuum was a little lighter for cleaning the stairs, but that "turbine tool" does such a great and quick job that I'm willing to get over it.
Overall, if you're in the market for a Dyson vacuum and have indoor pets, I would STRONGLY recommend the Ball Animal 2. What few complaints I have with it are just overshadowed by how well this thing performs in a house with a couple cats.

My New Favorite In-Ear Headphones
on January 27, 2017
Posted by: Daniel
The Good:
- S/M/L ear tips included
- Five different "enhancer" (locks the headphones in to prevent them from falling out while working out) sizes included
- Nice included protective case
- Great sound (once you get the right size to create a good seal)
- Decent battery life
The Bad:
- Call quality isn't very great
The "Meh":
- 12-month membership to Under Armor mapmyrun
I only own one other bluetooth in-ear headphones, but I rarely use them (bulky, "meh" sound quality, and not-so-great battery life). I wanted a new pair that can double for working out and studying. These JBL/Under Armor sport wireless headphones handle both tasks and do it well.
There are three different ear tip sizes as well as five different "enhancer" pieces (to "lock" the headphones in to prevent them from falling out) to make them both comfortable to wear and help great a nice seal for sound isolation.
Once I found the right combination of ear tips and enhancer that work for me, I was impressed with the sound quality and noise isolation. The right fit also makes these comfortable enough to wear for a few hours while studying as well. There is some sound leakage, so be mindful to your volume if in a library around other people.
They are also super light, so I'm able to run/jog and forget that I'm using wireless headphones (something I couldn't do with the old bulky pair I previously used). There's a small clip on the headphone cable you can use to clip to your shirt if you want, but what little cable movement present didn't bother me.
The inline control works and does its job, but the best part is there's no need for some app to be able to pause or skip tracks. The mic isn't great though, people I spoke to said the sound was a little muffled.
JBL and Under Armor advertise an eight hour battery life, which is pretty close to what I am getting. Your mileage may vary.
In the box is a code that will let you have a 12-month membership to Under Armor's premium workout app, but I haven't used it yet and probably won't. I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 paired to a Samsung Gear Fit 2, so I'm already used to a decent workout/fitness/health app and don't need another one.
OVERALL:
I love these. They're comfortable, won't fall out, and most importantly they sound amazing.

I really wanted to like them
on November 30, 2016
Posted by: Daniel
These are the first pair of bluetooth earphones I've ever owned, so I was super excited to use them when they finally arrived at my house. After letting them get a full charge, pair them up with my phone (super easy setup BTW), I was pretty disappointed.
The sound quality is actually better than I was expecting, especially when I swapped out the medium-sized rubber earbuds for the large and was able to get a secure fit with a nice seal in my ears.
Audio quality was great......until I moved my head in any direction. The noise from the cable behind my head rubbing against my shirt or skin is very annoying and virtually unavoidable. I've tried tightening the little length adjuster for the cable, but it doesn't make much of a difference. The only thing that helps reduce (not eliminate) the rubbing sound is wearing a tighter shirt made from a super smooth material like nylon). At this point, I'm probably not going to use these for workouts and just use them at the library when studying.
Another thing that bothers me is that these make my ears stick out, since the bulk of the headphones goes behind your ear. I understand this is to make them "secure" and prevent them from falling out of my ears, but I look ridiculous. It might just be my ears, you might not have the same problem, but only seeing side shots from the guy working out in the pictures on the Best Buy page for these makes me suspicious...
I do love how durable these seem to be. I don't worry about breaking them or getting them dirty. I can clean them up with some water and a cloth and they're good as new.
The battery life is also great. Sony claims that you can get seven hours of use, while I don't quite get that much out of them (closer to around six hours), it will depend on how loud you like your music.
OVERALL:
They're not terrible headphones. Sure, there are a few things I don't like about them, but there are things I do like. These were clearly meant for working out, but the sound from the cable with any movement will drive me nuts, so I'll stick with my simple/cheap Yurbuds for work outs for now. These Sony earphones are great for the library or studying though.
THE GOOD:
- Excellent sound quality
- Great battery life
- Durable build quality
- Decent bluetooth range
- Decent noise isolation
THE BAD:
- I can hear any movement from the cable. I shouldn't want to keep my head motionless when using headphones designed with working out as focus.
- The design and way they sit behind my ears make them (my ears) stick out

The phone will be available unlocked (carrier free)? To not depend on Verizon for the Android updates. When?

Verizon Wireless doesn't lock their smartphones anymore:

http://www.verizon.com/about/consumer-safety/device-unlocking-policy

You can buy the Pixel from Verizon (while I'm sure they would prefer you use them over another carrier) and put in a SIM card from another provider without any problems. Software updates to the Pixel are going to be directly from Google (just like Apple with their iPhones), even if you're on Verizon.

It is an unlocked phone, so I assume it is compatible with SIM card from other countries - is that correct?

Yes, the Pixel and Pixel do not have a SIM lock. You can put in a non-Verizon SIM card and the phone will work just fine.

However, the Pixel and Pixel XL phones from Verizon (for whatever reason) are shipped with the BOOTLOADER locked. This means you can't flash a custom ROM on the phone.

Online, the estimated battery life is 9.5 hours. How accurate is this estimate?

I guess it really depends on what you're doing, but I'm getting roughly 6 hours on a full charge.

I'm usually streaming music while doing research, typing up documents, or watching a YouTube video now and then. I also like to leave the keyboard light on and my screen is set to around 70% brightness.

I'm sure I could lower the screen brightness, listen to music on my phone rather than the Spectre, and turn off the keyboard light to get more out of the battery, but I doubt it would be the 9 hours HP claimed.

The laptop is brand new too, so it could be something that could be resolved with a software update down the road.

this laptop does not have many reviews, why? and would you recommend this product if I like Netflix, traveling and take notes at school and some light gaming

The laptop is still very new, so I would guess that's why there are not that many reviews for it yet. Give it a little time and more reviews should start showing up on the site.

As far as recommending the Spectre, I'm a student as well. I LOVE how light this laptop is. The screen may not be 4K, but it's still HD (1080p) and content still looks good. While the speakers are decent, I would still use headphones when watching Netflix. Taking notes is actually pretty good on the Spectre, since the keyboard is surprising great given how thin the laptop is. They keys actually have decent travel distance. If I could complain about the keyboard, it would be that they are a little loud, almost like a mechanical keyboard (I don't think it is mechanical, but I could be wrong).

The Spectre doesn't have a dedicated GPU, it has Intel HD graphics. You could get away with casual games (I like to play Hearthstone on the Spectre), but I don't think you would be able to get away with more graphic-intensive games like Doom.
