Not Only For The Pros
on November 9, 2016

I used to think that these products were just for professional use, but after playing around with the free trials, I'm wish I tried these products much earlier!
Even if you ignore the abundance of free guides and/or tutorial videos, these programs make it very easy for new people to jump in right away. I look forward to improving my skills from both trial+error and through online tutorials.
I wanted to also mention that even though the box claims you need a DVD drive, it's not true. There's an included card that directs you to the Adobe site where you can download the software after entering your product keys.

Great, but not perfect
on October 20, 2016
Posted by: Daniel
Pros:
- Amazing cameras (front and back)
- Quick access to the camera (double-press the power button)
- Quick, reliable fingerprint scanner
- Great looking screen (even if "only" 1080p resolution)
- Decent battery (gets me through the day with light-moderate use)
- Google Assistant
- Timely software updates straight from Google
Cons:
- No water resistance
- No wireless charging
- No expandable storage
- Only one speaker (it looks like there are two on the bottom, but only one is a speaker)
- Power button and volume rocker are on the same side (this one is personal preference)
I know other people have said this, and I apologize for repeating it, but I wish Google spent a little more time to come up with a different design for the phone. It looks too much like an iPhone from the front (the missing home button is the only giveaway it's not an iPhone) and the back looks as if Google realized halfway through the design that they were making an iPhone, so they added the fingerprint scanner and glass on the top half of the phone. Seriously, turn the phone over and cover the top half with your hand, then tell me it doesn't look "familiar".
I was able to get over the design quickly (the iPhone is a nice looking phone), and I'm glad I did. The phone feels great to hold, and unlike my old Samsung Galaxy S6, the Pixel doesn't feel as if it is going to slide out of my hand. I don't feel compelled to slap a case on it to prevent it from being accidentally dropped.
The fingerprint scanner is on the back, which took a little while to get used to. The scanner is very quick and accurate, I have yet to have the phone prompt me to try reading my fingerprint again. I don't have a preference as to having the fingerprint scanner on the back or the front of a phone (my previous phone was a Galaxy S6, so I'm used to the scanner on the front), but if you do have a preference it's worth thinking about if you're trying to decide if you want to buy this phone or not.
I have the smaller Pixel phone (not the XL), but even though the screen resolution is "only" 1080p, it looks amazing. Colors look great, the picture is sharp, and I wouldn't have guessed the resolution was 1080p had I not known. Watching videos, viewing pictures, or playing games looks fantastic on this screen.
Along with a great screen, I was surprised how well the speaker sounds on the Pixel. While the phone doesn't have front-firing speakers, it still sounds clear and loud. I was a little disappointed to see that it only has one speaker. If you look at the bottom of the phone, it looks as if there is a speaker on each side of the USB-C port, however only one is a speaker (the other is an imposter!).
I'm not a huge mobile gamer, but the games I do play look great and show no signs of lag or frame loss. As with just about any phone, it does start to heat up after a while when playing, but not warm enough to worry me about damaging the phone.
Call quality is great, but what impressed me is the signal strength. I'm seeing full bars of service on my Pixel in the same areas that my wife gets 2-3 bars on her Galaxy S7.
My biggest complaint about the Pixel is that Google is asking for flagship pricing while leaving out features found from other flagship phones: no water resistance, no wireless charging, and no expandable storage. I could have forgiven the lack of expandable storage if this was a new Nexus phone, since Nexus phones have never had that feature, but this isn't a Nexus. If you're trying to decide between the Pixel and Galaxy S7, it's hard to not want to go with the S7.
** REGARDING THE PIXEL OR PIXEL XL IF BUYING FROM VERIZON **
There was some confusion online regarding the Pixel and Pixel XL if you purchased them from Verizon and if the phones were locked or not. I wanted to help clear up the confusion: the phones are NOT locked to Verizon Wireless.
If you are a Verizon Wireless customer and buy the Pixel or Pixel XL today, you're not "tied" to Verizon with your Pixel phone. You can toss in an AT&T, T-Mobile, or Sprint SIM card without any issues. I was able to use an AT&T SIM card and it worked just fine.
Where is the confusion coming from?
The BOOTLOADER is locked if you buy the Pixel or Pixel XL from Verizon Wireless. All this means is that you can't flash a custom ROM to the phone. If you don't know what that is, or don't care, then don't worry.
Again, the Pixel and Pixel XL from Verizon Wireless are NOT SIM locked. If for whatever reason you don't want to continue being a Verizon Wireless customer later down the road, you're free to take your Pixel or Pixel XL with you.

Great little speaker
on October 6, 2016
Posted by: Daniel
Before this, I was using a Beats Pill 2.0 for casual listening around the house while doing chores or while outside on the patio. The Pill did the trick, but I wasn't very impressed with the audio quality. I can say that the new Bose Soundlink Color 2 is a fantastic upgrade!
I hate to jump on the anti-Beats bandwagon, but when you compare the Pill to the Soundlink, it's clear that you're just paying for the aesthetics and logo with the Pill. If you want the better audio quality between the two, go with the Soundlink.
I love how amazing this little speaker sounds, even at higher volume levels, the quality remains fantastic. I don't know a better way to word it, but the audio sounds like it should be coming from a much larger speaker, Bose really did a fantastic job.
There is one thing I liked over my old Beats Pill compared to the Bose Soundlink: a protective case. My Pill came with a simple protective case, while the Soundlink does not. If I want a case to store my speaker and keep it free from dust or for travel, I have to buy one straight from Bose (or go with a 3rd party via Amazon). It's not a deal-breaker, but I was a little disappointed.
You can also use a Bose connection app from either the Apple App Store or Google Play with the Soundlink 2. The app feels a little unnecessary to be honest. My phone connected to the speaker right away (and was added as a trusted device to make future pairing easy) without the assistance of the app. I can control the volume through the app, but I can do that with the phone volume buttons as well. Plus, the volume control in the app shows as maxed out, while I can still press the physical button on the speaker to increase the volume further. Until Bose makes some updates to the app, it really feels pointless. I wouldn't bother downloading it.
You can use the Soundlink as a speakerphone to make and receive calls, but the quality wasn't as great as I was expecting. I had to walk over to the speaker and really turn up the volume to hear the other person, and they told me that the quality on their end was sub-par (they knew right away I had them on speakerphone, but it sounded "worse than usual"). Since I mostly plan on connecting my phone to the Soundlink, I'll probably just take my phone out when I need to make/receive a call.
PROS:
* Lightweight
* Great sound
* Easy to pair with phone/tablet/computer
* Decent battery life
CONS:
* The mobile app needs work
* No included protective case
* Phone call quality is not great

A great classic

I loved this movie so much when I was a kid, but never actually purchased it later in life. After my son became obsessed with Zootopia, I thought he would enjoy this movie as well (and I was right)!
I love that it's not only offered at a great price, but includes the code for the digital copy so we can watch it on the road.
If you don't already have this in your movie collection, what are you waiting for?

Awesome "basic" TV

We have a PS4 and a Roku 3, so we didn't need to pay extra for a "smart" TV. Also, how can you beat paying under $200 for a 40" HDTV?!
The picture looks great. It's not 4K, but since we don't own any 4K content/devices, it doesn't matter. Our old TV was 26" 720p, so this is a wonderful upgrade!
My only complaint are the built-in speakers (which are in the back). They're not very loud and the audio quality is "meh". Thankfully, with saving so much money by buying this TV, we bought an Insignia soundbar and couldn't be happier.

Powerful and lightweight
on September 23, 2016
Posted by: Daniel
This is a fantastic option for anyone who lives in a home with stairs. I hated having to haul our old traditional vacuum up and down the stairs, and try to maintain a balancing act to clean each step as well. With our new Rocket vacuum, with the push of a latch it becomes a handheld vacuum, making cleaning the stairs so much easier.
I had my doubts about how powerful a small vacuum like this could be, but after using for a few days, I am impressed. Not only is it powerful, but Rocket makes good on their claims of no loss of suction when moving from carpet to hardwood (or vice versa). No more bending down to switch a dial if I want to move from cleaning the carpeted area to wood floor.
The LED light is great, especially for making sure you get all the webs from the ceiling corners or when cleaning under furniture.
If I had to find anything to complain about, it would be the small-ish "dustcup" needs to be emptied each day I clean and the power cord does not have an auto-retract feature (you have to wrap the cord). It's a small, lightweight vacuum, so I can't really blame them for that.
Overall, it's a fantastic upgrade over our old vacuum and I am very happy to have it.
PROS:
- Lightweight
- Powerful (don't let its small size fool you)
- Plenty of accessories
- Bright LED light
- Easy to maneuver
- Included wall mount for storage
- Included filter can be rinsed and re-used
CONS:
- Small lightweight vacuum means a small dirt bin that needs to be emptied frequently
- No retractable cord

If you loved the 1st movie, you'll love this one

I loved all three Toy Story movies (the original was obviously the best), so I finally decided to buy them to add to my movie collection since I could buy both the blu-ray and digital in one purchase.
My only complaint was that at the time of purchase, it wasn't on sale. The movie is almost 17 years old and is still almost $30. Don't get me wrong, you get what you pay for and it's still worth the price, I just wish the sale price ($19.99) was the standard price.

Keep your Kindle safe

I like to read outside, so I wanted to protect my new Kindle from the occasional drop, so I wanted a protective case or cover. This is from Amazon, so I expected something with great quality to match the Kindle. I was not disappointed.
The case feels great and the Kindle snaps in easily without the "deathgrip" found from cheap brands you find online. It also has a nice feature where the Kindle wakes up when you open the cover.
My only complaint about this case is the price. It's higher than other cases for the Kindle, but in the end I felt it was worth it.

Great, even for a casual reader
on June 11, 2016

I don't consider myself a "heavy" reader (I read a couple books every few months), but I love my new Kindle. It's lighter than some of my books, which is great, but the best thing is that I can read at night in bed without disturbing my wife.
The e-ink display allows you to also read outside in direct sunlight, perfect for the upcoming summer months. It's relaxing to just go out to a local park, sit under a tree, and read your new book.
If I had to find a fault with this Kindle, it would be the ads. You're already paying a decent amount for an e-reader, then if you don't want ads on the lock screen, you have to pay Amazon more money. They don't really bother me, so it's not worth taking away a star. They might bug you though, so just keep that in the back of your mind before buying this that you will have to pay Amazon $20 to have them removed.

Beautiful and Powerful
on May 27, 2016

THE GOOD
- Super Portable: I can talk about how crazy light and thin this laptop is, but to truly appreciate it, you have to see it in person.
- Excellent Keyboard: Any time I've used an ultrabook, or the new Macbook, the keyboard is either "mushy" or (in the case of the Macbook) almost no key travel, making it feel as if you're not typing at all. The Spectre keyboard is one of the best keyboards I've used on any notebook.
- USB Type-C: I know, some people may not be fans of it yet, but I love it. Unlike the new Macbook, the Spectre has three USB C ports. HP also included a USB C to USB 3.0 dongle in the box, so no need to buy one to use your external storage devices.
- Speakers: I've owned a few notebooks before the Spectre, and I usually don't use the speakers since they're not great (or they're located under the laptop). These speakers will not blow you away, but they're actually quite decent.
THE NOT-SO GOOD
- Battery Life: HP claimed up to 9 hours of battery life, but I'm not sure how they came to that number. With light to medium usage (web browsing, streaming music, occasional YouTube videos, and using MS Office) I'm getting close to 6 hours on a full charge. It's decent, but not quite what HP claimed.
- Trackpad: I won't sugar coat it, I don't like the trackpad on the Spectre. It feels a little small and is not as fast as I was hoping. I understand that with creating an ultrabook this thin there would be occasional compromises, but I wish they could have moved the keyboard up a little further to put in a larger trackpad.
- Display: I'm assuming this was to save space and improve battery life, but the display is non-touch and is "only" 1080p. The screen still looks good, and I'm glad HP didn't go with a lower resolution, but it is starting to feel more common to see displays with higher resolution these days.
- This thing is a fingerprint magnet, especially the copper accent where the USB ports are located.
GAMING
- The Spectre does not have a dedicated GPU, rather it has Intel HD graphics. The Spectre will play most casual games well (Diablo, Hearthstone, Starcraft), but this was never really meant to be used for gaming. If you really need a laptop for gaming, I would look at HP's new Omen laptop.
OVERALL
This is a great looking laptop. I still can't believe how thin and light it is while also having a 6th gen i7. I thought such a thin design would make typing on my lap difficult, but the Spectre is surprisingly sturdy to type on my lap. The aluminum and carbon-fiber design will surprise you with it's strength.
If you are looking for a laptop that is not only super light, but also powerful, I strongly suggest you take a look at the new HP Spectre. Seriously, go to your local Best Buy and see this thing in person, you won't believe how light and thin it is until you can hold it.

The phone will be available unlocked (carrier free)? To not depend on Verizon for the Android updates. When?

Verizon Wireless doesn't lock their smartphones anymore:

http://www.verizon.com/about/consumer-safety/device-unlocking-policy

You can buy the Pixel from Verizon (while I'm sure they would prefer you use them over another carrier) and put in a SIM card from another provider without any problems. Software updates to the Pixel are going to be directly from Google (just like Apple with their iPhones), even if you're on Verizon.

It is an unlocked phone, so I assume it is compatible with SIM card from other countries - is that correct?

Yes, the Pixel and Pixel do not have a SIM lock. You can put in a non-Verizon SIM card and the phone will work just fine.

However, the Pixel and Pixel XL phones from Verizon (for whatever reason) are shipped with the BOOTLOADER locked. This means you can't flash a custom ROM on the phone.

Online, the estimated battery life is 9.5 hours. How accurate is this estimate?

I guess it really depends on what you're doing, but I'm getting roughly 6 hours on a full charge.

I'm usually streaming music while doing research, typing up documents, or watching a YouTube video now and then. I also like to leave the keyboard light on and my screen is set to around 70% brightness.

I'm sure I could lower the screen brightness, listen to music on my phone rather than the Spectre, and turn off the keyboard light to get more out of the battery, but I doubt it would be the 9 hours HP claimed.

The laptop is brand new too, so it could be something that could be resolved with a software update down the road.

this laptop does not have many reviews, why? and would you recommend this product if I like Netflix, traveling and take notes at school and some light gaming

The laptop is still very new, so I would guess that's why there are not that many reviews for it yet. Give it a little time and more reviews should start showing up on the site.

As far as recommending the Spectre, I'm a student as well. I LOVE how light this laptop is. The screen may not be 4K, but it's still HD (1080p) and content still looks good. While the speakers are decent, I would still use headphones when watching Netflix. Taking notes is actually pretty good on the Spectre, since the keyboard is surprising great given how thin the laptop is. They keys actually have decent travel distance. If I could complain about the keyboard, it would be that they are a little loud, almost like a mechanical keyboard (I don't think it is mechanical, but I could be wrong).

The Spectre doesn't have a dedicated GPU, it has Intel HD graphics. You could get away with casual games (I like to play Hearthstone on the Spectre), but I don't think you would be able to get away with more graphic-intensive games like Doom.
