Full-Function, Low-Profile Keyboard + Mouse Combo
on October 10, 2019
Posted by: iconoclast
from Houston, TX
The Logitech MK470 Slim Wireless Mouse and Keyboard Combo packs a full-sized keyboard and numerical keypad, plus an optical mouse, in a small package.Unbox it, activate the batteries, plug the single USB receiver into your laptop, and you’re good to go in less than five minutes.
I tested the keyboard and mouse in a small business environment, and it appears to be business-worthy.
Pros: The keyboard keys have a comfortable typing action and the mouse has right and left buttons and a central scrolling wheel that also works as a third button. The batteries should last many months, up to 18 and 36 for the keyboard and mouse. Setup is fast and intuitive, with illustrated instructions inside the box. The keyboard and mouse should work with both Windows PCs and Mac computers. The design is sleek, with full-sized keys, a numeric keypad, and full row of mappable function keys.
Cons: Neither the keyboard or the mouse are ergonomic or adjustable; they are slim and low-profile. This makes the MK470 combo good for stashing in your messenger bag along with your laptop. If you need an ergonomic keyboard and mouse, consider other Logitech products. The keyboard works with my Mac, but I was not able to remap the “modifier keys” (e.g., Control > Command, Alt > Option, etc.) to use simple keyboard shortcuts like “copy” and “paste.”

Powerful all-in-one for small business
on October 1, 2019
Posted by: iconoclast
from Houston, TX
This Brother wireless all-in-one is a workhorse for small offices and home offices. It holds a large ink supply, is well-designed, is intuitive to use, and you can print wirelessly within a few minutes.
The printer uses four large ink cartridges (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) and has an internal ink tank so does not need replacement cartridges often. It prints single-sided pages very quickly, up to 22 ppm, and easily prints double-sided documents without paper jams or misfeeds. The color and print quality are good on the “normal” setting, fine for most everyday business documents. I printed a 30-page spreadsheet double-sided with no problems, and the quality of text and graphics was good.
The features that stand out the most are its ink capacity and the ability to scan and print pages up to ledger/ tabloid size (11 x 17-inch). The Brother all-in-one can print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper, allowing you to print brochures, booklets and other marketing materials. You can use different paper types and print quality settings.
The printer comes ready to use. Just plug in the power cord and follow the on-screen instructions to insert the ink tanks. It takes up to 10 minutes to insert the cartridges and fill the internal ink supply. If you want to use the fax function, then open the printer and plug in the included phone cord, attach to a land line or VOIP phone, and enter your fax ID settings using the screen prompts. I recently ditched my VOIP, so did not test this function. For wired printing, connect a USB or Ethernet cable (not included) to your computer, also by plugging it inside the unit and laying it inside a cleverly-designed channel. For wireless setup, identify the network to which you want to connect your computer, smartphone or tablet. Then print... I was able to print seamlessly from my iPhone. It took a bit more work to download printer drivers for my laptop.
Pros:
- Ready to print, right out of the box
- Intuitive controls and large color screen
- Wireless and wired network capability
- Auto document feeder
- Large scanner bed
- Print up to 11 x 17-inch documents
- Fast print speed
- Connects to smartphones and tablets without loading print driver software
- Large ink tanks
- Front paper tray plus rear paper feed path
- Printer control screen has adjustable angle
- Ability to scan to USB drive, email, cloud
Cons:
- Took bit of trial and error to get printer to work with laptop on wireless network
- Large printer footprint because of 11 x 17-inch scanner bed and paper tray
I recommend this printer for small offices and home offices, as it yields professional results. I would give this printer 4.5 stars, mainly because of the two issues listed above.

Lightweight, powerful cordless vac
on September 16, 2019
Posted by: iconoclast
from Houston, TX
The Shark Rocket Cordless Pet Pro packs a lot of power in a small package. It is easy to put together and easy to operate. Just snap together the sweeper head, wand and motor, charge the Lithium Ion battery, and you are good to go. Two attachments allow you to use the vacuum as a handheld—a crevice tool and a pet hair brush tool.
The Shark vacuum has a built-in, rechargeable battery that is designed to operate for forty minutes. This is twice the battery life of my older Shark cordless vac. I had no problem doing my normal cleanups on a single charge, though cleaning the whole house might test the battery. I tried the vacuum on hard floors an on carpets, and it cleaned both well. Be sure to set the switch to match your floor type. The carpet setting is quite noisy on hard floors. The power boost switch allows greater suction for short bursts of time. The dust bin is small and compact, and easy to empty. The LED light is handy, pointing out tufts of dog hairs in the corners of my tiled floors. The pet hair brush, used with the vacuum motor only, picks up pet hair and crumbs from upholstery. The pet hair brush and crevice tools are handy for vacuuming a car interior, but they are stiff (no flexible hose). I have yet to find a vacuum that effectively vacuums pet hair or fibers from auto carpeting; that is a strange surface.
My rating: 4 to 4.5 stars.

True Bluetooth headphones
on August 21, 2019
Posted by: iconoclast
from Houston, TX
The Marshall Minor II Bluetooth In-Ear Headphones are light, simple, and easy to use. They paired seamlessly with my iPad. I tested them with complex iPad games, with music and with apps that use the keyboard. With music, the sound is rich and clear. When playing video games, There was no lag time. With apps that use a keyboard—messaging an e-mail—there was a slight lag.
The Minor II earpieces are connected by a thin cord which is worn behind or in front of the neck. The two earpieces connect magnetically when not in use. The controls are near the right earpiece. The headphones have an innovative fit system. They come with one size of ear gel. Adjust the cord to make a small loop to custom-fit each earpiece.
These Bluetooth headphones are comfortable. They would be good for sports, though not rated waterproof. The single control button/ joystick allows you to answer phone calls, change music, etc.

Achieve the deep-fried flavor you love, without all the oil and added calories. The Chefman TurboFry™ Touch Air Fryer allows you to bake, fry and roast like a pro. This airfryer requires little to no oil, so there’s less of that fried oil smell lingering in the house and less fat that you’re consuming. Its large 3.5-liter capacity and flat basket gives you the ability to cook enough for a hungry crowd all at once. Skip the microwave! Reheat soggy leftovers in the air fryer to return them to their original texture. Make better-for-you fries that are just as crispy and tasty, roast chicken thighs, or heat up leftovers for a quick and easy meal. The temperature control with 60-minute timer automatically shuts off once food is done, so you never have to worry about burning or drying out your food. Its space saving basket is removable and dishwasher safe for easy clean-up, so you’ll have more time to dream up your next air-fried meal!

Great addition to the kitchen
on August 12, 2019
Posted by: iconoclast
from Houston, TX
In Houston, we have hot, humid summers. The last thing you want to is turn on the wall oven. That’s where the Chefman Turbo Air fryer comes in! You can make crispy french fries, cook hamburgers, sausages and more without heating up the kitchen.
The Chefman Turbo Air Fryer is compact and fairly quiet. It is easy to operate, with simple, intuitive controls. It cleans easily with a soapy sponge or soft dish brush—or you can put the cooking basket and tray in the dishwasher.
This unit allows you to cook for up to 60 minutes at temperatures from 200 to 400 F. You can set the timer in one-minute increments and set the temperature in 25-degree increments.
I tried the air fryer with three different foods. First, I made sweet potato fries, thinking the air fryer would make them crispy, but they were soggy, as when made in the wall oven. Next, I tried frozen “fast food” fries. I cooked half the bag at a time and shook the fries part way through cooking. They came out hot and crispy, evenly cooked. Finally, I made smoked sausages. They cooked beautifully, brown on the outside and juicy in the center. They cooked to an internal temperature of 178 in just 12 minutes at 350 F. It would have taken longer to preheat a gas grill and cook the sausages outside.
Pros: Small footprint, easy to use, easy to clean up. Good for 1-2 people. Can cook and reheat a variety of foods. Low noise level.
Cons: Small, 8-in diameter cooking basket limits reheating foods like multiple pizza slices. Must cook food in two or more batches for larger crowds. Suggest considering a larger Chefman unit.

Powerful, feature-packed laptop
on June 18, 2019
Posted by: iconoclast
from Houston, TX
The Dell Inspiron 7590 2-in-1 laptop offers a large display, full-sized keyboard and number pad in a lightweight package. It has an Ultra HD (4k) screen, lots of RAM and a large solid state drive, which makes it great for watching movies or creating graphics, illustrations and animations.
Like any Windows PC, The Dell Inspiron 7590 2-in-1 laptop takes several hours or days to configure it just the way you want it. You need to sign in to your Microsoft account (or create an account) to get the most out of the machine, especially if you want to save settings and preferences across several devices. Windows 10 allows you to pair the laptop with an Android or IOS smartphone for notifications, etc.
I put the Inspiron through the paces with typical office software and with Adobe Creative Cloud graphic design software. I installed MS Office desktop software and several Adobe CC desktop software apps, as well as the Chrome browser a Password Manager, and a few fonts—pretty bare bones for me! The biggest hiccup was trying to use the provided Dell Active Pen with Adobe Illustrator. It was easier to use my finger on the touchscreen than to use the Active Pen. I am surprised that Dell’s low-end pen was included with such a powerful, high-end laptop. Most likely, I will use my Wacom drawing tablet with the laptop for Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and other design apps.
The display is responsive and the touchscreen works well. The screen resolution is excellent, and the colors are vivid. You can adjust the screen brightness to your liking, and change the color temperature to warmer hues for nighttime work.
The physical keyboard offers a full-sized layout, a numeric keypad and a large trackpad. It has a nice feel and the backlighting is handy for low-light situations. The on-screen (touch) keyboard is a nice size for typing when in tablet mode. You can set it to make sounds when you type. Mac IOS users may find the touch keyboard layout takes a couple of days to get used to.
The Inspiron 7590 2-in-1 easily found my WiFi networks and wireless printers and prompted me to install HP software as needed. I could quickly check my printer status.
Pros:
- Nearly 16-inch, UHD display is competitive with Mac “Retina” displays, vivid and bright
- Cinema sound
- 16 Gb RAM and 512 Gb SSD
- USB Type C port to connect and/or charge compatible peripherals
- HDMI port for external monitors and projectors
- One headphone jack for input/ output devices like headphones and microphones
- Two USB 3.0 ports for other peripherals
- One SD card slot for digital camera memory cards
- Windows 10 Home Edition included, should meet most users’ needs; upgradable to Pro edition at extra cost
- Touch screen can be used in a standard laptop configuration, folded for use as a tablet, or folded in a tent configuration for presentations
- Dell Active Pen included for writing or drawing
- Sleek black design, lightweight
Cons:
- Windows operating system is slow and touchy
- No productivity or office software included
- Gamers may need additional HDMI or other ports
- Dell Active Pen bundled with the laptop lacks software drivers and cannot “pair” with the laptop, so it is of little use
- The cooling fan runs often

The Belkin Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable is the perfect accessory for my laptop with its Ultra High Density (UHD) display. The cable is sleek, yet rugged. It offers super fast data transfer rates and also powers other USB-C devices by connecting to the computer without the need for a charger.
This Thunderbolt 3 cable differs from the Apple Thunderbolt cables used on iPhones and iPads. It is compatible with Windows PCs and Mac OS devices that have USB Type C ports.

A next generation sound system
on June 13, 2019
Posted by: iconoclast
from Houston, TX
The Samsung-Harman Kardon HW-Q80R Soundbar is a fully-capable, next-generation sound system. You can connect the system to your Smart TV using the included HDMI (ARC) cable, using Bluetooth (if your TV is so equipped), via WiFi or using an Ethernet cable (not included).
It is solid; you can tell from the weight of the package that it has powerful speakers. The HW-Q80 system comes with a sound bar that you can place on a TV stand or mount on the wall with the included bracket. It also comes with a subwoofer, power cords for the Soundbar and subwoofer, and a remote with two AA batteries.
It took about 10 minutes to unpack and set up the system. Most of this time was spent reading the instructions. I connected the HDMI cable, and my Panasonic TV “found” the new sound system easily. This means that I can use the TV remote and/or the Soundbar remote to control sound.
The Soundbar is sleek black with an unobtrusive design. Use the control buttons on the top, or use the remote. The bottom of the Soundbar has multiple ports to connect other audio and video devices in addition to a TV. an LED status window hides behind the Soundbar grille. This lets you view the sound profile (Standard, Surround, Gamer, etc.), volume and sound source.
Pros:
- Excellent sound, adjustable bass (subwoofer) and selection of sound profiles for watching TV or movies, listening to music, or playing games.
- Fairly easy to set up
- Multiple ways to connect, including true wireless via Bluetooth or WiFi (some accessories optional).
- Comes with a wall mounting bracket.
Cons:
- HDMI cable is 1 meter. Many users would need a longer cable.
- Unit is large, with the Soundbar at about 49 inches wide.

Lightweight, Comfortable Sport Headphones
on June 6, 2019
Posted by: iconoclast
from Houston, TX
The JVC Sport Headphones are lightweight, comfortable, and have great sound quality. They work well with any laptop, smartphone or tablet with a standard earphone jack. If you have a newer iPhone without a headphone jack, then you need an adapter (not included).
The red headphones come with two sizes of black silicone ear gels. One set was more comfortable for me.
I used the headphones with my iPad on different apps, games, and on phone calls. The sound quality is excellent and there is no time lag—which is a problem with other headphones I have.
The waterproof design is a plus, especially for athletes and those who live in a warm, humid climate like I do.
The one-button control switch allows me to answer phone calls, turn on music and switch music tracks, but does appear to change the earphone volume. I have to change the volume on the iPad itself.

Good Bluetooth Headphones
on June 3, 2019
Posted by: iconoclast
from Houston, TX
These Skullcandy Indy Truly Wireless Earbuds are a good mid-priced set. They have a sleek black design, come with a dual-purpose storage and charging case, and a USB-to-micro USB charging cord.
Pop the earbuds in the case, plug it in, and they charge quickly. Works with any USB charger, charging outlet or plug into your computer. Charger not included.
The Indy earbuds paired easily with my iPad. However, my husband could not pair the earbuds with two devices he uses—a MacBook and and an iPhone—and use the earbuds with one device at a time.
The sound level was lower than expected when using the earbuds with an iPad game, so I had to turn the volume up way past the 5 bars I would use without headphones. The volume was closer to expected with YouTube videos and music, but still not as loud as it should be. There was sound no lag time with the game, but an annoying lag time when typing on the iPad keyboard.
The sound quality is good, but no bass and treble settings. The in-ear design allows the wearer to hear outside noises, so these earbuds would work well for walking in public while listening to music, or talking on the phone.
Summary: a good, not great, set of earbuds. Appropriate for a mid-range price point.

Do these eufy cam's have a limited duration for recording the event, like another brand that only records 12 seconds unless you pay for a subscription? Also, does eufy impose a minimum off-time between recording events, like 5 min minimum between events?

You can choose 30-second or 60-second recordings. I do not know what the “off time” is, though you can make changes in the app. There is no subscription fee for eufy.

It would really be nice to have a link to the manual. Only comes with one battery? What is the model of a spare battery and how much is it? No info on Shark site or anywhere. Strange for $350.

This model comes with a single, rechargeable battery that lasts up to 60 minutes (the original DuoClean had two batteries that lasted up to 30 minutes each. This model requires only the power adapter, meaning that you can charge the battery while inserted into the vacuum or removed from the vacuum. The battery is Model XSBT750, and is rated to last for two years. I do not know the cost of a spare battery.

How is this charged? If it has rechargeable batteries , can you use the older model of the cordless’s batteries?

The Vertex DuoClean comes with one rechargeable battery, which is different from the batteries on the original DuoClean model. The Vertex comes with a power adapter that you plug directly into the battery. Therefore, you can charge the battery while inserted into the vacuum, or removed from the vacuum.

I wish this had two batteries like the previous unit that I own and use currently. Is there a bundle option with a second battery somewhere?

This updated model has only one battery because the battery can last for up to 60 minutes. I have the original DuoClean model with two batteries; the two batteries each last less than 30 minutes. Maybe that’s why there is only one battery; I do not know if there is a two-battery bundle available.

Will it stand upright with no help?

If you try to stand this vacuum with the power head and battery, it is top-heavy. You can fold it and leave it upright without tipping over, or you can lean the power head on a counter or table if you need to leave it for a few minutes. I fold mine for storage, so it does not tip over.
