Economical Whole House Audio!

I have 4 of these connected in my house: living room entertainment center, office computer speakers, line-in to a bluetooth speaker in the bedroom and a cheap amp to some outdoor speakers. Using speakers that were already in my house, I now have full house audio for a $100 investment!!! I've admired Sonos for about 10 years now, but couldn't justify the cost of buying all their speakers. Chromecast Audio provides full control over what speakers are in what groups and the volume they play at. I've grouped adjacent rooms, whole house, etc. and its great to walk from room to room and not detect any major delay in the audio. My only gripe is that I wished this functionality worked with my video Chromecast.

What is the difference in sound quality using 3.5 mm-3.5 mm jack, 3.5mm-RCA jack or 3.5 mm-optical jack for a receiver, an integrated amp or a Marantz CD player with optic input?
Always use the optical connection when possible. The 3.5mm jack is analog output from the Chromecast and the digital-to-analog converter in the Chromecast is likely inferior to your amp or receiver.

Is there going to be a Chromecast Audio software update for iPhone in near future? Since current Chromecast Audio is not iPhone-friendly, as with an Android phone, I am thinking of returning the Chromecast Audio I bought.

Is there a difference in sound quality between an HDMI Chromecast and Chromecast Audio connected to a receiver? Can HDMI Chromecast play music stored on iPhone? Can Chromecast output to a higher quality DAC for better sound?
1. Depends on how you connect it. I'd recommend using a mini-Toslink to use a digital optical connection between the Chromecast Audio and your receiver, then you will achieve the same quality as HDMI.
2. Stored on as in iTunes, no. You can however use your iPhone to play from Google Music, Spotify, Pandora, among others.
