Want the Kids to Mop? Problem Solved!
on April 30, 2018
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
If I handed my kids a mop & bucket I'd end up with 1) Two complaining kids, 2) A flooded kitchen. Put this thing in their hands and there is excitement to use. Just don't tell them they're mopping. #CleaningToys
The SpinWave features 2 good-sized pads that spin to do a good job of cleaning tile and wood floors. This isn't for cleaning up a spill like a mop would be, of course, but more than replaces a standard mop for cleaning jobs. Two sets of pads are included, one a "scrubby" pad for deep dirt, and works GREAT on textured tile floors, and the other a flat pad for more standard cleaning or polishing. Pads can easily be washed in the washer when dirty, not only allowing them to be reused, but also avoiding the nastiness of string or sponge mops.
The SpinWave includes a removable water bottle with clearly-marked lines for mixing cleaning fluid and water (2 lines -- 1 for "small jobs" and 1 for "large jobs").
The device is cordless, and quickly recharges with the included AC adapter. When not in use, the SpinWave includes a plastic base to keep your pads from just sitting on the floor.
But as mentioned, the kids will love using this to help clean up. Certainly not what Bissell probably wants to use as a primary marketing tactic, but you can't discount being able to use something to get the kids to help.

The advantage of buying the 365 subscription versus a standard Office install is the ongoing updates you receive to the software, constantly keeping you up-to-date. This package allows you up to 5 installations per purchase, which is usually more than enough to cover all of your devices in the house. Highly recommend.

Very Good Entry Level Projector
on April 2, 2018
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
The Epson EX3260 is a good, entry-level projector that is good for use for on-the-road or ad-hoc presentations. It features a very bright bulb with a good throw distance, and I found the projection was quite good in a bright room with lots of windows & outside light.
The device features standard inputs for VGA, HDMI, and component cable (with audio), but no
“aux” or headphone-style audio in, so for presentations with sound that you wish to play thru the projector you’ll need to use the HDMI option, which isn’t a problem for most major laptops nowadays. It includes a standard VGA cable as well as a USB cable for connecting to the computer to allow you to use the projector remote to control your presentations. And as with every other device on the market, an HDMI cable is NOT included.
There are quick access buttons on the top of the device for controlling top-to-bottom keystone, but has a slider that allows you to control the left-to-right keystone. The slider is really nice, as a quick way to adjust the keystone without the annoying menus, and would have liked to see a top-to-bottom keystone slider, as well since that is usually the keystone adjustment you need to make more often (it’s like they thought backwards on this). You can also control zoom, source, and access the menu with the buttons on the top.
This is a watered-down version of the Pro EX7260, so there are menu options & remote options referencing WiFi or wireless projection, which is only available out-of-the-box with the EX7260. To allow for wireless projection with the EX3260 you will need to purchase a separate WiFi card, which looks to run about $100. NOTE: The EX3260 comes with a tray to hold the card in place once installed but doesn’t actually tell you what that part is, so don’t just trash it if you intend on purchasing the WiFi card (I don’t know if the card purchase also includes a tray, so better to be safe & keep the part).
The device also includes a nylon padded case with strap to carry the device around with you.
The one major limitation remains the SVGA resolution, which is a max of 800x600. With most laptops running in the 1920x1080 range, it makes it a challenge to project much other than a PowerPoint since anything shown in a real screen (for example, projecting Microsoft Project to show a time line) causes the text to look blurry & garbled. Switching your laptop to only project to the projector will dumb the laptop down to 800x600, which then projects clearly and sharply on the screen, but with the obvious limitation of screen size once down to 800x600.
Bottom line is that this is a good projector to take with you for onsite or ad-hoc presentations. If you’re looking for something to mount & be able to do more with, you may want to consider a projector with a higher resolution. But if PowerPoint is your primary use for the device, it’s a great choice.

Excellent Speaker at a Great Price
on March 29, 2018
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
The SBS-XB21 is the baby brother to the larger SBS-XB41, but has almost the same outstanding sound but in a smaller package.
Sound is deep and powerful with the extra bass (thus the “XB” in the model number), something you don’t always see in a smaller speaker at this price point. The extra bass can be turned off, but you won’t want to.
The speaker can be paired with another similar model speaker to make it a single-side speaker (i.e. you can make one speaker a “left” speaker and the other “right”, allowing you to spread them out for stereo sound). Or, you can pair it with another similar model speaker using a single button using the “Wireless Party Chain” mode & extend the sound onto dozens of other Sony SRS speakers, extending your music throughout the house.
The outside is a tough fabric which is water & dustproof and easy to clean. The device is also waterproof for up to 3 minutes in water, great if you’re using this around water. One warning is that the instructions claim that the waterproof features only cover “fresh water” and not pool water or salt water, which is more likely where you’ll find yourself dropping the speaker, so I can’t attest to the actual waterproof capabilities if you drop it in the pool or at the lake or beach. It also requires that the back panel of buttons & plugs be sealed with the cover, which further opens it to a risk, so just keep it closed.
The battery is rated to up to 12 hours of power and charges over a couple of hours via micro USB. Note that this does NOT come with a power adapter, you’ll need to provide your own plug to put the included micro USB cable into, something that companies are doing increasingly which is frustrating.
The speaker can be controlled with an app from your phone, allowing you to control sound quality, speaker pairing, and the flashing strobe lights on the front of the speaker that flash in sync with the music. Unless you’re running a rave, feel free to turn these off.
The size of the speaker (about 7.5” and a little over 1 pound) makes it much easier to hold or to pack to carry with you than its bigger brother, the SRS-XB41 (which weighs in at 11.5” and 3.5 pounds). But as expected, sound on this speaker is not as deep as the SBS-XB41, but still far exceeds expectations for a speaker at this price point.
In one of the odder features, this has a “feature” called “Party Booster”. This is a feature that allows you to hit the speaker in different places & make sound effects like drums, claps, yells, and cowbells. Yes, if you hit the speaker on the back side it makes a cow bell sound. This is one of those things that the engineers must have included as a joke, and I really don’t understand it. I turned this off immediately with the app. There are warnings in the instructions that the feature “can be accidentally turned on” by dropping the device. Yeah, thanks but I don’t need more cowbell.
Overall, this is a great speaker and is a great choice over the more expensive SRS-XB41 if you’re looking for a speaker at a lower price point than the SRS-XB41. I highly recommend it.

Take the party anywhere with this Sony portable speaker. It's safe to use at the pool or beach thanks to an IP67 rating that allows total water immersion, and flashing lights add mood to the music. This Sony portable speaker's Extra Bass keeps things pumping, and the Live Sound feature provides three-dimensional audio.

Want a Perfect Speaker? This is it.
on March 29, 2018

Every now & then a perfect speaker comes along, and the Sony SRS-XB41 falls into that category.
Sound quality on the speaker, which is the first thing you should be concerned with, is outstanding. Deep, solid bass makes the music boom, but of course with the option to disable the “extra bass” (thus the “XB” in the product number) by clicking on the “Live” feature with the push of a button. But once you listen in XB mode, you’ll never use “Live” again. The “Live” feature sounds tinny and empty after you hear the bass pumped out by the speaker.
The LED lights around the entire top & bottom edges, as well as flashing speakers & 2 flashing white strobes, illuminate in sync with the music, giving it a party feel, and all lighting can be controlled with a single button (on/off) or tweaked to any of a few million colors using the app on your phone. I found myself putting a single color in place to match the room it’s in & turning off the flashing strobe. I’m not holding raves at the house, so didn’t need the extra flashing.
The outside is a tough fabric, mine was in blue but other colors are available.
The battery is enough to last hours (official documentation says up to 24 hours), but also allows you to steal power to charge your phone with a built-in USB port, turning the speaker into a charging bank, which is great if you need a quick charge while on-the-go.
Other ports on the back include AUX in and a micro USB port for charging (can we please start transitioning to USB-C?). These ports need to be sealed with the single rubber flap on the back when around water to maintain the waterproof capabilities.
The app allows you to control the speaker, including speaker pairing, lighting, and sound quality, but in a frustrating feature you then have to download a second “embedded” app called Fiestable to be able to control the lights. Not sure why you don’t just make it one app. You cannot uninstall Fiestable without installing the Music Center app.
The only downside to the speaker is it is a bit large (11.5” wide and coming in at 3.5 pounds), something you’re not going to want to make a handheld speaker, but who would anyway?
At the end of the day, if you’re looking for an amazing speaker with incredible sound to take on-the-go, the SRS-XB41 is your speaker.

Good, but Room for Improvement
on March 23, 2018
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
While very good, there is a lot of room for improvement with the Sony WH-CH700N Noise Cancelling headphones. The headphones seem to want to compete with more expensive options like the Sony 1000X Premium headphones or those from companies like Bose, but do come up a little short.
The headphones are fairly lightweight, but also feel like they have a little less quality than competing headphones. Also, my headphones came with something loose or already broken off in the left earpiece; sounds like a small piece of plastic (like a broken tab) floating around, which I found quite annoying.
The ear foam is comfortable, as is the padded head band, but the less-dense ear foam does reduce the amount of actual noise cancelling that occurs, and I found that I was still hearing a lot of ambient noise, especially with the added breach in the foam from my eyeglasses.
Sound is actually pretty good, but lacks nice, deep bass by default, but can be adjusted with the app by changing the sound mode to one that includes more bass. The tradeoff with that is that you’re forced to change the mode from one where it focuses primarily on sound quality to one that focuses primarily on connection strength in order to adjust sound options.
And unlike other Sony noise cancelling headphones like the 1000X models, the WH-CH700N only has 2 noise cancelling modes – on or off (the 1000X models include an “ambient” mode which picks up on outside noise & mixes it in digitally with the headphone sounds for situational awareness when walking, running, or biking). Would have liked to have seen the ambient option included, even if it wasn’t an automatic thing like it is with the 1000X where it detects what activity you’re doing & configures the noise cancelling level accordingly.
There are multiple buttons on the headphones to control multiple aspects of the device, including play/pause, fast forward, and rewind with a single, multi-position jog button, NC on or off, and volume up/down. There is also a wired input in the event you want to connect directly to a headphone jack on your phone or on a plane. There is also a micro USB port for charging the headphones. Micro USB and “aux” cords are included in the box. Connection to the headphones is via standard Bluetooth pairing or auto config using NFC-enabled devices.
The headphones boast a 35-hour play time, which is excellent for active noise cancelling headphones in this arena. You also get up to an hour of function with only 10 minutes of charge, which is nice if you forgot to charge the headphones & are about to head out on your commute.
Bottom Line:
The WH-CH700N is a decent, entry-level headphone if you’re looking to enter the noise cancelling arena, making active cancellation a bit more affordable. But the affordability does show in the construction, sound (without app manipulation), and features. Given the choice, I would opt to spend a little bit more money on one other higher Sony options.

Incredibly Easy, Incredibly Effective
on March 20, 2018
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
The SimpliSafe Shield system is a 100% wireless, easy-to-setup system that takes away the cost & complexity of wired systems. As a benchmark, I was able to unbox, install, and completely configure the system in the amount of time it took one of my kids to get ready for the morning. Seriously.
The system includes a base station, which is also the alarm speaker, keypad controller, 6 door or entry (i.e. window) sensors, 2 motion detectors, and a key fob for remotely arming/disarming the system just outside the house. The key fob also has a “panic button” discreetly designed into the top of the fob allowing you to activate the system if you’re being attacked or forced into your house against your will.
The system relies heavily on “Command Strips” to mount every piece of equipment, making installation quick & requiring no drilling or holes to be put into walls or doors, an excellent option if you’re renting or don’t want to tear up the house permanently drilling, although they do include screws should you want or need to hard mount anything. Extra Command Strips are included in case you mess up or need to move anything. As mentioned, installation took me less than 30 minutes to complete with all parts of the system installed.
Adding the sensors & parts to the system is also very easy, with the instructions clearly detailed on the touchpad for you to follow. After adding a sensor you can name it with one of the dozen or so pre-typed names or manually enter a name that matches up with the actual type of entry you’re naming.
The door sensors can be a bit of a challenge if you have thick crown moulding around the door, as the 2 parts of the sensors can be a bit of a distance away. However, as long as the 2 parts are less than 2 inches apart, they should work. Any more than that & your sensors will read as the door being open, so plan well & test the sensors BEFORE trying to mount them.
The motion detectors have a smart detection feature built in that allows the system to discern between a pet and human, which was good because my dog loves to move into the living room to soak up the sun. So far, there have been no activations even though I know she is tripping the sensor when entering the room.
Range between the base unit & the sensors is excellent. Our house is fairly spread out, and sensors at the far end of the house (garage area) work just as well as the ones within 6 feet of the base station.
While this system did not include them, other add-ons are available including extra keypads, fobs, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, water alarms (where was this in my last house when I needed it?), glass break alarms, panic buttons, and cameras. I do wish the system were compatible with other brands of smart or connected devices like Nest smoke detectors, but guess that is the nature of proprietary systems.
With regards to the panic button, this is a feature that the keypad is missing by default. In my previous alarm system (commercial professionally-installed system) we had the 3 buttons for fire/EMS/police on the keypad. This system does not have that ability, rather you would need to purchase a “panic” button to install near the keypad. Probably not a huge deal seeing that I never had to hit the buttons in the past, but worth mentioning.
The system also features an optional “duress” PIN that can be entered if you’re being forced to disable to system but don’t want to set off the alarm. Entering this code will make it appear the system is being shut off, but will send a signal to the alarm company who will dispatch police immediately without calling the house (like they would do in a standard alarm).
So far, I can find absolutely no down sides to this system. It beats the pants off expensive commercial systems that always come with installation fees & long-term contracts. SimpliSafe will allow you to cancel or suspend service at any time, no contract involved. Likewise, the system is portable, which is great for those of us who rent or are planning on moving in the near future. And looking at the technology & features, it’s clear this is the future of the alarm industry. I feel much safer with my wife & kids at home with this system without the back end expenses of the more expensive systems.

Excellent Active Lifestyle Headphones
on March 6, 2018
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
The Sennheiser HD1 Free headphones are an excellent pair of headphones, lightweight and most importantly with amazing sound in a very small ear piece. Great range in sound between the highs and the bass produce rich sound that make them a pleasure to use.
The headphones are great for active use (working out, running, etc.) with a tightening loop that allows you to tighten the headphones behind of in front of your head. When not in use, the back sides of the earpieces click together magnetically so the headphones are dangling or otherwise fall off your neck.
In-line buttons are easy to use to navigate thru your music. On the other side of the wire is the inline battery, with life working several hours without needing to recharge.
The only con to the headphones would be the transfer of sound into the earpieces when running, a common issue I have seen with any headphones with the rubberized wires leading into the earpieces. You hear the “thud” of your step when running with every step. You get used to it over time, but a design that included a cloth braided cable would have dampened this effect.
But I would highly recommend these for the active user.

One of the Best I've Tried
on February 16, 2018
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
The Jabra Elite 65t is one of the best true wireless in-ear headphones I've been able to try. Excellent fit, not overly heavy, don't fall out of your ear when working out, and great sound.
The Elites come with a small rectangular charging case with nice rounded edges. I found the case difficult to open since there is a tab that locks the lid into the case. This sometimes led to awkward prying & then the headphones popping out once I managed to open the case. Would have liked a release button or maybe a magnetic lid closure. The case also uses a micro USB charging cable (which it comes with a very short cord for), but would like to see that move toward a USB 3.0 cord since that is where most USB devices will be going soon.
As soon as the headphones are removed from the case, they automatically power up & pair with the previously-paired device, which I liked, saving an extra step of having to power up the headphones before putting them in my ear.
Sound is crisp, and bass response is quite good so long as you have the right-sized ear piece. They do a good job (again, with the right ear piece) of blocking out ambient noise but are not noise-cancelling. Ambient noise allowance can be controlled using the app.
I did have occasional issues with the left ear phone dropping out (right is primary, left is paired to right). At one point the left was dropping out about every 3 seconds. I removed them, powered them both down, powered back up and that appeared to fix the issues completely.
The phone app allows you to control other aspects of the headphones, including "auto pause", a feature where if you remove 1 ear phone it automatically pauses your music. I found this helpful at the office when someone came in to talk, I was able to stop the music without going into the music app. This is on by default with the headphones, so if you don't want to use the feature you must control it via the app. You can also control "HearThrough", where you can mix the amount of headphone sound with ambient noise, for example when you're running or biking & you want to hear some of your surroundings. This doesn't turn on automatically based on sensing your activity like other manufacturers' headphones do, but is available to set via the app.
The app also controls aspects of your phone call, including how much of your own voice you want to hear fed back into the earphones when on a call and readback of the caller's name via caller ID if they're programmed in your phone (the app will ask for permission to your phonebook/contacts when installing).
You can't beat the headphones for the price. It's a great pair of headphones with excellent sound you'll be pleased with.

Poor Fit, No Bass, Frequent Disconnects
on January 31, 2018
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
Over the past year, I have tested a good number of headphones, from Bose to Sony to Jabra to these JBLs. By far, I am the most disappointed in these of any headphones I have owned or tested for a variety of reasons.
CONS:
First for me is the fit. I have trouble getting these to stay in my ears, not just when active, but even just working at my desk. I started with the medium ear silicones and tried going up to the large, which then wouldn't fit in my ear canals. Back to the medium, the only way to even get them to start is to shove them way into my ears, creating some suction, but that eventually goes away & they come loose again.
The lack of a good tight fit, in addition to allowing them to fall out or displace, causes a lot of ambient noise to come in, which drowns out the sound of the headphones. I've gotten spoiled to active noise cancelling headphones, and the amount of outside noise was a deal breaker for me.
Next issue for me was the sound quality. The highs (treble) were good, and the volume more than adequate, but the buds seem to be lacking good bass response, which you need to round out good sound. Add the poor fit, and any bass that is present escapes and you're left with headphones that sound very "tinny".
And finally comes the disconnect issues. Others have complained heavily about this, and it is indeed an issue. The left ear bud, which derives its signal from the right bud (the right bud pairs with your phone), frequently disconnected, sometimes only for a second or 2, but any drop out is not acceptable. Not sure where the issue lies, and why JBL hasn't done anything to update the headphones unless its an actual hardware issue, but it is a major issue when you're paying what you're paying for the buds you shouldn't have to contend with dropouts of signal at random times.
PROS:
I do like the case that the headphones come with. It's a bit larger than a hockey puck, and allows the headphones to be recharged in the case. Headphones last a little under 4 hours, and JBL advertises you can get 5 recharges from one case charge. The headphones "snap" into place with a magnet inside the case, so you know you have the right placement for charging.
OVERALL:
I found myself greatly disappointed in the headphones, and would recommend investing in something with a little better quality if you're looking for so-called "truly wireless" headbuds.

Add music to your day with these Sony wireless headphones. Their noise cancelling technology uses artificial intelligence to adapt to your environment and reduce background sounds for enjoyable listening. The Quick Charging battery on these over-ear Sony wireless headphones provides up to 35 hours of playback for convenience.

I have an ipod-would that fit in.It's an ipod with two cords-one to fit in headphones and one to recharge

There is an included "aux" cord for plugging in to wired-only (non-Bluetooth) sources like iPods or in-flight entertainment systems.

Is the Sony better than the Bose quiet ll When it come s to noised

No. The Bose QC series does a much better job than the Sony headphones, but obviously at a higher price. If you're sticking with Sony, look at the 1000X (over-the-ear or the earbud style) series for the best noise cancelling quality and options.

Will this work on a LG G3 phone that operates on Android System

I want to give this as a gift to my fiance. Who has a LG G3. His phone does operate on the Android sytem but it is not a samsung. I just wanted to make sure it is possible to sync and if so, are there any draw backs?
The device will only work with Samsung phones. It will not work with any other manufacturer, despite being on the Android OS.

Cell phone carrier

Does this have to be hooked up through a carrier? My cell phone is through Verizon so do I need to add it to a data plan?
The device is a Bluetooth-enabled watch, and therefore is tied to the phone you have. You do not have to enable a new line of service for this device (although Samsung does make a 3G-enabled device that is its own standalone phone device that can be used without a tied-in phone). You can make & answer calls from the watch so long as you are within Bluetooth range of the physical phone device.

What do the LEDs mean?

The box brags about the Halo LED indicators, but says nothing about what they indicate. The info in the box is a joke and refers you to the "full manual" on the Samsung site, which apparently doesn't exist. So... what do the various LED combinations mean??
The green lights around the device show that it is charging. They turn to green when the device is fully charged.
