The HP Laserjet Pro M452dw is such a departure from the LaserJet MFP M477fdw that it's hard to believe that they have virtually the same print engine (they use the same toner). You can read my review of the all-in-one/MFP unit (spoiler alert, it is craptastic), but enough about that. Let's talk about the HP Laserjet Pro M452dw.
Printouts come out fast with tremendous detail. For a single function device, it does that one thing and it does it perfectly. Is there anything else I could really ask for? Works great with AirPrint, Mac OS X, Windows 10. You can print on the Mac without any additional drivers using AirPrint, or you can install HP's half-decently integrated drivers for additional options. PDFs print fine unlike its all-in-one counterpart.
I am much happier and saner having ditched the M477fdw for the M452dw and adding a Fujitsu SnapScan ix500 to my small office.
HP LaserJet Pro MFP m477fdw Wireless Color All-In-One Printer: This printer features built-in Wi-Fi along with wired Ethernet connectivity for flexible printing options from your desktop or mobile device. JetAdvantage Private Print ensures secure printing and scanning, and touch-screen controls offer simple setting navigation.
On paper (no pun intended), the M477FDW has it all. Fast networking, Wifi, web-enabled apps, single pass dual sided scanning, EXCELLENT color and grayscale print quality, even a fax (if you're into that sort of thing).
Then the nightmare begins: Where do I start... The single-pass dual sided document feeder scans EVERY page crooked. The document feeder also grabs stacks of pages at a time, meaning I have to reload my stack, or scan one page at a time, making the auto document feeder completely USELESS. I also have this printer set up downstairs and my workstation is upstairs. This was very frustrating as I had to make over a dozen trips up and down the stairs to ensure my scan was successful. I bought an MFP, not a workout device.
The networking would drop out after an hour. A reboot was always needed. I updated the firmware to the latest version, but it still didn't fix the problem.
Got a Mac? Too bad. Half the time, PDF documents will not print and will give a "cannot print. file is corrupt" error on the printer, then proceed to ignore your print job. When you are printing PDF time sensitive real estate contracts, that's a big deal. The workaround is to use Adobe Reader to print, or a Windows computer, which I can put up with... but I can't put up with the constantly dropping network connections.
My 6 year old Canon Pixma MX870 was way less fussy than this. I am hoping I just bought a bad individual unit. I placed another order for one, hoping it will not have the same problems. If HP can fix the many quality control problems, they may have something worth buying. In the meantime, stay away from this lemon.
