I do not know what do you mean by storage, because there are a lot of kind of storage (program, data, Operating System (boot-able device)).
This flash memory can be used for these different type of usage. We can plug and forget because it is very small.
For the boot-able, it is depend of the laptop, and/or the setup (BIOS).
I installed Ubuntu (linux distrib) on my flash memory ("To run Ubuntu from a USB stick") and I can used as an OS on my professional laptop for personal need.
This flash memory can be used for these different type of usage. We can plug and forget because it is very small.
For the boot-able, it is depend of the laptop, and/or the setup (BIOS).
