Great for tracking water usage

The Phyn smart water assistant is a very interesting device and I don’t fully understand how it works, but from what the phyn videos that I watched basically say that your homes water pipes are a closed system and when water moves through it, it emits some ultrasonic waves that the Phyn smart water assistant picks up. Over time it can use these waves to determine where the water going to, for how long, and how much water. Say for example, you flush a toilet and that has a certain signature in your pipes. I am currently using version 6.3.0 of the PHYN app and I will speak to my experiences with that version. I do have some issues with it, and in full disclosure, I discovered that I do not have a Pressure Relief Valve installed so my reporting will take longer than the 3 weeks they say. The app makes the installation simple with an easy to follow step by step directions. You will need an unswitched power plug under the sink in which you install, and I had to add an adapter to mine since both of my plugs were being occupied by the dish washer and the garbage disposer. The two sensors were quite easy to install and I only needed a crescent wrench to install these. They fit inline with your water pipes and once you have them in, you just need to be sure they do not leak and the app will remind you to keep an eye out for that. Attaching the sensor to my home Wi-Fi was a breeze and the whole experience was just easy. After a short while the app will start alerting you to water events and will give you a time that the event happened, how long the event lasted for and an estimate for how much water was used and of course where the water was used at. These events seem to show up in the history after about 2 minutes or so and they are not very accurate for the most part (could be due to my lack of PRV). At first, I was getting very strange alerts, but over the course of a week, I would say that it has become more accurate. You do have the ability to “teach” the Phyn Smart water assistant by changing the alert to what you know it to be. For example, if you are running the washing machine and it registers at a toilet flush, then you can change it, and if Phyn gets something right, you can click on it and let Phyn know it got it right as well. I think the more you do that, the faster it will become more accurate. My biggest gripe with the app is when you are looking at your event list, there is no way to “refresh” it, say a swipe down on your screen. I have to exit out the app and go back into it for it to show new events. Hopefully, this will be addressed with an update to the app (v6.3.0). Another benefit of Phyn is that it will alert you to an unusual event, when my irrigation system first was detected, it alerted me via a text message and Push notification that something could be wrong. This is a nice feature to have just incase and it might save you some heartache from a major flood at your house. This unit cannot turn off the water, but it will alert you, Phyn makes a device that can turn off the water and I am very interested in that. Overall, this will give me some peace of mind and its fun to see how much water we use, and this might help us cut back on some usage.

The KitchenAid Digital countertop over with Air Fry is a multipurpose appliance that packs a lot into the compact design. The styling of this oven has some nice touches, such as the shiny chrome handle and the glossy black face with matte black outer finish. Included in the box are everything that you need to get started. An air fry basket, 9x13” baking pan, grill rack (designed for the pan), metal drip and crumb tray, and another metal rack. There are 9 different cooking modes that this device has as well, they are: Dehydrate, Proof, Bagel, Toast, Air Fry, Bake, Broil, Reheat, and Keep Warm. Obviously, some of those modes are just a slight variation of another, but it is nice to have a dedicated mode for some of these. I am not sure how much I will use them all, such as Proof or Dehydrate, but perhaps you will. This is extremely easy to use, you have the mode button and then you have the temp/time button. At first I was confused as to how to set the cooking time (who reads the instructions these days), but I quickly figured out that the dial on the right is multifunctional and press will toggle between temp and time. I only had the chance to cook my beloved Chicken wings that we usually use our 5.2qt standard air fryer and to cook 24 wings it takes two batches. I was able to fit 21 large Costco size chicken wings (fully thawed) in the no-flip basket. Just set the dial to air fry mode, temp 450 and 28 minutes. I probably should have cooked them a little longer since this batch did not come out very crispy. But using an air fryer does take some trial and error I have found. You can usually dial that in after a few attempts. Not a big deal at all to me. I was happy to replace our old toaster oven with this nice-looking appliance and I hope for many happy years with this. Clean up was also easy as I let my dishwasher to the heavy lifting. I did rinse off the drip pan first though. You should check out the KitchenAid Digital Countertop oven for yourself and you will not be disappointed.

Almost a winner, touch screen holds it back
on September 15, 2020

The Chefman IQ 8qt digital air fryer is a gorgeous looking appliance that is sleek, modern and elegant looking all at the same time. Unfortunately, the functionality of this air fryer is not up to the same standard as the design. It has a beautifully designed touch panel display that is bright, clear and easy to use, but that is where the functionality stops. The touch panel is unresponsive beyond the first couple of presses and lags badly. After some playing around with it more, it just is slow to respond, I must wait a good second between presses to change the time or the temperature. I supposed this is something I can get used to but hopefully they can improve the responsiveness of the touchscreen. This air fryer has an exceptionally large basket that can hold plenty of chicken wings, enough for a dinner for myself and wife and plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day. It does work well as an air fryer and has all the features that you expect it to have, such as, presets (chicken, fries, fish, etc.). Temperatures range from 200 to 400 degrees and the exhaust fan on the back does not put out that much heat, so I believe it is safe to keep under my cabinets without harming the wood. Clean up was also a breeze and I was nearly able to clean up the entire mess with just hot water and soap and I did not have to use my sponge to clean it. Over time I am sure the non-stick coating will degrade and that will change, but it is dish washer safe so that might be the best way to clean it so you don’t have to scrub anything to help preserve that finish. I think overall, I could not recommend this to a friend in this version, I think an analog version would be much better and I feel that someone might get frustrated at the touch screen response time.
Pros:
XL 8 Qt basket
Food taste
stainless steel design
Ease of use
Noise
Cons:
Capacitive touch response time

Vac & Mop, Deebot got this.
on September 8, 2020

from Sparks, NV
The Deebot OZMO U2 has the ability to vacuum your carpets and mop your tile floors all in one unit. This is extremely useful to me as I never seem to have enough time in the day to keep picking up after my 2 little girls and 2 dogs. Luckily, the dogs do not shed so I do not need to worry about the rather small dust bin (400ml) getting full of dog hair. There is a XL dust bin accessory that is available if you do have dogs that shed that can hold a lot more, but this unit has a 300ml water reservoir for the mopping feature. I found this design to be very cleaver. The small dust bin is nestled inside the larger water bin and this allows the U2 to do both functions. Run time has been around the advertised time of 110 minutes or so, when I turn up the section to Max or Max+, then the run time is affected by about 15 to 20 minutes. Deebot U2 has three modes of cleaning and they are Spot, Edge, and Auto. Auto mode is a random pattern while vacuuming and a back and forth mode while mopping, this is activated by installing the mop attachment. Edge cleaning will take your little robot for a tour around the edges of the house and the last mode is spot mode which will have your robot circling around for 2 minutes in the area of your choosing.
Now let’s talk of performance. The vacuum has three suction modes, standard, Max and Max+. As I mentioned before using the Max and Max+ modes will lower the run time, but it will pick up more debris. I was satisfied with the amount of dust and dirt in the dust bin on standard mode and I think this is the mode that I will use the most. The noise of the vacuum in this mode is just a little loud for TV when it is close to you, but any distance away, it does not seem that loud. Max and Max+ modes will also increase the noise. Mopping has been a great feature. The robot has been great with reaching nearly every area in my kitchen in a systematic back and forth pattern, but in vacuum mode it goes in a random pattern. I have some magnetic boundary strips that keep the OZMO U2 just in the kitchen area. Object avoidance is good with this robot as well. I have many obstacles in my house between three big rooms, dining room, family room, and living/kids room with tons of toys in it and the U2 will only get stuck on small items, but it is recommended that you pick them up before running it anyways. I am a bit disappointed in the lack of a mapping feature but at this price point I cannot complain too much. It does offer a lot in the fact that you can use this to mop and vacuum and it does a good job at both of those.
Pros:
Price
Vacuum/mop feature
suction modes
noise level
voice prompts
easy to set up in the app
Cons:
small dust bin included
lack of mapping
random vacuum pattern

Good fit, nice design, and great sound.

The Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 2 for the PS4 (and the Nintendo Switch) are a light weight and somewhat comfortable headset. I have had headsets that fit me better, but these are probably a 6/10 for me. The ear cushions are a little small for me ears and I feel they are scrunched inside of them, but it is not a terrible feeling and I quickly got used to them. They are well padded and soft so that helps with them being small for my ears. They are light and usually my biggest gripe is the top of my head starts to hurt after long sessions, with these though, that is not the case. They are mainly a plastic build which helps keep the weight down, but it also gives them a cheap feeling and but despite that, they feel like they are well made and the head band does have some give in it. There is not a lot of cushion on the head band, but it is sufficient. The integrate microphone is a neat design and it swivels up and locks into place for mute (USB dongle shows a red light) and the mic can pivot towards you a little to help with picking up sound. I found that the mic does work well, and my buddies can all hear me fine while playing Warzone. Pivoting the microphone towards your mouth had a small improvement in the tone of my voice and it seems to pick up more bass. I do like that you can hear yourself in the headphones (adjustable volume knob) and that helps so I do not feel like I must yell. Battery life has been about 15 hours and that is what they are rated at. Sound wise you have a Mode button to cycle thru a couple of pre set settings and if you hold down the power button you can activate super human mode and this will amplify the sound of footsteps in game for you. I did not really use this mode that much because I felt that the default settings were plenty loud for my taste, but it is nice to have options. Another feature of these are their glass friendly design and although they touch my glasses, they don’t push on them and I am able to remove my glasses if I wanted to without taking off the headset. Overall, for the value, these are a great all-around wireless headset. They work with the PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC and upcoming PS5. You can buy these and cover all five devices. Wireless range on these seem to be better on the PC than on the PS4. My PC is located upstairs, and I can go downstairs into the kitchen to get a snack and I can get minimal cut out. When I am using this with the PS4, it is in direct line of site in the same kitchen, it will cut out more than it did while upstairs. Not sure why this happened, but perhaps a firmware update could resolve this. This is not a deal breaker for me either since it does work in a reasonable distance from the PS4.
Pros:
Cost
microphone
Multi device support
USB Type C connector
Battery life
light weight
PC Range
Cons:
small ear cushions
plastic design
PS4 Range

Eco friendly way to enjoy single use coffee
on August 29, 2020
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
I am not much of a fancy coffee drinker, but my wife does enjoy a wide variety of different coffees. She does like espressos and she really loves this machine. She is not very technical and is always asking me for help with many tasks that I believe to be simple. I let her unbox the Nespresso machine and fully set it up to see how easy it was, and in fact, it was quite simple to get going and use. We have never had a Nespresso or any espresso device in our home before this one showed up. After the initial set up and cleaning process, my wife was looking through the 12 pack of assorted capsules to see what she wanted to try out first. She started with the Espresso ALTISSIO and found it to be flavorful and she enjoyed drinking it. The machine knew exactly what was placed in it by some barcode that you cannot see on the capsules and it will dispense the perfect amount of water for that drink. You have the option to add more water if you press the button within 45 seconds of the process stopping, this is a good option for those of us who may not want a drink as strong. I have used it personally when I tried out the ODACIO coffee capsule. I did enjoy the process of starting up the machine, it is satisfying to push down the top of it and lock it into place before you hit the button to start it up. According to some literature, Nespresso works with some 100k independent farmers around the globe and is committed to being an environmentally responsible company. They even have a way to recycle the aluminum capsules that is as simple as mailing them in envelopes that you can get. I think they come with the capsules as you purchase refills of those. I would highly recommend the Nespresso Vertuo NEXT coffee & espresso machine to all my friends who enjoy coffee. It makes it simple and it is a nice Eco friendly way of enjoying the single use coffees with out feeling bad for the environment.

Great back up solution for home networking gear
on August 19, 2020
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The APC – Back UPS 900VA is a simple device that just provides battery power for 6 of its 9 total outlets in the event of a power outage. It seems that this model is not designed like the APC batteries of previous generations where you could have the PowerChute software running and it would power down your PC in the even of a power loss or when the batter was depleted down to a certain level. This unit simply provides power with no data port to connect to a PC. I was a bit disappointed, but it is not a deal breaker for me since we rarely are without power in my area for more than a few minutes if at all. Power surges or sags do happen more often and that is what I am more concerned about. Using a UPS as this will provide protection from those type of events by providing clean power to the electronics without power fluctuations. I have a different APC unit on my TV and entertainment system to protect them. I have my mid-range gaming PC with a 25” monitor, modem, Linksys Velop node and my Arlo camera’s plugged into the APC unit and it when I removed power it was able to keep my devices powered up for a little over 10 minutes. When I tested it with just my Arlo cameras and networking devices (8 port Linksys switch, cable modem, Linksys velop tri-band node), it provided power for about 6 hours. I might purchase a second APC unit for just my PC since that seems to need its own battery.
The design of the outlet plugs could limit the number of devices that you use if their plugs are not oriented in the proper way. If it is a standard PC power cord type, then you can use all 9 spots, however, just about all my other devices use rectangular or square plugs that block access to at least another plug. You can use extension cords to make it work, but it does not look as clean that way.
With so many of our devices in our home’s dependent on internet connection, I feel it’s very important to keep the devices that provide that connectivity powered up in the event of a power loss. I don’t really think this unit is designed for a PC since it does not have the PowerChute software to tell the PC to power off gracefully and this will keep those other devices up for a much longer period of time. Also, it does not have a user replaceable battery and after the battery expires you will have to purchase a new unit. That is something I miss of the old models as well. Be sure to register it so you can extend the warranty period out to 3 years.
Pros:
Cost
Runtime for networking equipment
3 year warranty
Easy to use and set up
USB 2.1A charging port
Cons:
non-user replaceable battery
orientation of the plugs limits use
No management software for PC to shut down

Small, lightweight, and powerful!
on July 28, 2020

The Hoover OnePWR Evolve Pet Cordless upright vacuum is an easy to use, easy to clean, battery powered vacuum designed for smaller spaces. It uses the OnePWR battery system that Hoover has and that means you can use the same battery for a variety of their products. This vacuum is light weight and has powerful suction. It seems to keep pulling dirt out of my carpets no matter how many times I go over the same area. My carpets are about 20 years old, still in good shape, but there is a lot of dirt trapped in them that you cannot see. I am extremely impressed with how well this little vacuum works. It does not have any attachments and it has three modes that you can toggle between, they are, carpet, multi-floor, and brush off. It basically just spins the brush roller fast with the carpet mode, slower with the multi-floor and off with the brush off mode (it might adjust the suction as well). I do wish the vacuum had some LED lights on it so you could see in those darker areas of the house. The vacuum head has a low profile and it fits neatly under some of my lower chairs that I have in the living room. The dust bin canister holds a lot of debris and I was easily able to do my entire house without having to empty it, also the battery held up great. My other complaint is the location of the power and mode buttons. I wish they would have placed them on the handle as they are on my Hoover Floormate. If you are looking for a lightweight, powerful and easy to use small vacuum, try this one out!

Decent camera that almost hits the mark
on July 21, 2020
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The Sony FDR-AX43 4K Handycam is a consumer level camera that is packed with features, easy to use right out of the box and shoots great video in 4K resolution. There are not a lot of buttons on this camera and the majority of the menu items are contained in the touch screen, which responds great and is clear, bright, and is a little difficult to read some of the smaller fonts on it. I have not found a way to increase the font size, so I had a little difficult reading some of the menu and icons. My eyesight is not the greatest with that so if you have no problems reading small fonts up close, you will probably be ok.
Using this to shoot video has been a blast. It is easy to hold and is a tad bit heavy, but not too bad. I usually get some shaky video when I shoot, but this has a built in gimbal that helps to stabilize the image and I did some running around as I recorded and it greatly reduced the shakiness that I would normally see. The video was very impressive, and you hardly can notice the extra movement that I was had put this through. Auto focus works very well, and I had no issues with this at all. Optical zoom is 20 x and digital is 250x. Sony has included some shooting modes that make a few settings for you so you can easily just click and record. They are Movie mode, Photo, Time-lapse Capture, Smith SLW REC, (not sure what that is exactly), Golf Shot, and Hight Speed Rec. I did find that you must change the file format to use certain modes. I am concerned with low light situations and I found that it did not do that bad overall, but still for better video in low light, I would recommend having a light source to improve it.
Battery life has been great so far with the included battery, I was able to record for 2hours and 20 minutes and still had some juice left.
There are some things missing from this camera that I feel should be included for what it costs. There is not regular viewfinder (maybe I am old school) and I do miss having a night mode on this. I have an older camera that has both of these features, but maybe it is a sign of the times. I don’t think these are deal breakers though.
A very cool feature of this is the ability to connect to a Wi-Fi connection and use a smart phone on the same Wi-Fi to control the camera. This is accomplished using the Imaging Edge Mobile app. It is easy to pair with the camera via NFC. Right now, functionality seems to be limited to downloading content to your phone/device, viewing what the camera sees, zooming in and out and pause and record. Initially I had success connecting my phone to the camera, but I did have some issues connecting again later. I think there might be some kinks to work out still, but I am sure it might just be user error on my part.
Overall, this is a really good camera for taking 4K video, but if you want a few more features then spend a little more and get the AX53 model.

Another great charger from Belkin!

The Belkin Boost UP Charge 10W Qi wireless charger is yet another great little addition to my desk at work. The design is quite simple and functional and will easily hold your phone in either portrait or landscape with rubberized spots to keep your phone safe at the points of contact. It charges my Galaxy Note10+ phone perfectly and I do have a thin case on my phone, and I have had no issues. I had my co-worker test out his iPhone with a thick case on it and it was able to charge that device as well. There is a small led light on the top that comes on when its charging the phone and it won’t bother you at night if you place this by your bed at night. I tested its ability against my Samsung fast wireless charger (10w) that I already had, and it charged my phone at nearly identical speeds with my phone in both fast-wireless mode and normal wireless mode. It comes with a standard micro USB to A cable and wall adapter. I also have their other Belkin 10W Qi charger, and this makes a great addition to that device. The added benefit of placing my phone on landscape mode so I can watch YouTube videos while letting it charge has been my favorite feature of this device.

Refreshed and ready to take its rightful spot atop a new generation of consoles, the Turtle Beach® Stealth™ 600 Gen 2 is the successor to the best-selling wireless gaming headset for PS5™, PS4™ & PS4™ Pro. The Stealth™ 600 Gen 2 wireless gaming headset is enhanced with a host of upgrades, including a larger high-sensitivity flip-to-mute mic that delivers improved chat clarity and now seamlessly integrates into the headset when muted. The headband and hinge design have been reinforced for added long-term durability, and soft, glasses-friendly ear cushions provide plush comfort while refined 50mm speakers produce high-quality, immersive sound and are optimized to unleash the power of Sony 3D Audio on PS5™. A user-friendly audio preset button on the headset allows for easy access to customize audio, and gamers can still count on Turtle Beach’s Superhuman Hearing® for an audio advantage on the battlefield. Finally, connectivity is made easy with the included, mini-USB Transmitter that wirelessly connects from your PlayStation® console to headset.

How is the mic monitoring? Is it loud enough? The gen 1’s had pretty quiet mic monitoring, did they improve upon that or is it the same?

the mic monitoring seems very sensitive and you can adjust it with a separate volume. You can crank it down to pretty loud.

Power disturbances can cause equipment damage and lessen your electronic devices lifespan.During power disturbances, you also risk losing connection to your critical devices. Ensure you keep connected to what matters the most with APC Back-UPS.

What replacement battery does the UPS take?

the battery is non-user replaceable. I am sure you can crack it open and replace it, but its not like the old units that had a removable cover to replace the battery.

Aluminum forks, steel headband, and memory foam and premium leatherette head and ear pads keep you comfortable through marathon training and competition sessions. Pro-G 50mm drivers deliver incredibly accurate audio with improved bass response. The advanced USB DAC has a five-band onboard EQ that can be programmed via G HUB software with settings from your favorite esports pros. Pro-tuned, detachable boom mic with wind screen and pop filter ensures your comms are crystal clear. Designed for PC.

Does this work for Xbox? The older version did

It only works with using the 3.5mm cable, not using the USB dongle, so you won't get the added benefit of your custom sound profiles.

Use the Google Smart Light Starter Kit to control the lights using just your voice. Set up in a snap: just plug in Google Home Mini, screw in the GE C-Life smart light bulb, and download the Google Home app to get started. Then just say "Hey Google" to dim, brighten, turn on and turn off the lights."

Is the bulb soft/warm white or bright/daylight white?

its a warm color....(yellowish)
