Sweet sweet sound system for your outdoor space

If you are looking for a great sounding outdoor speaker system for those Summer parties that you will be having again, then look no further than the Sonance outdoor streaming music system that is powered by Sonos. Get rid of those little Bluetooth speakers that you have to charge and do not provide enough sound to fill your whole back yard and upgrade to a wired system that is powered by a 250-watt amplifier (125W per channel) and is always ready to be used.
Setting up this system is simple although it would not connect to my wireless AX network or even a wireless AC network. Wireless N is the standard that this can connect to, so I was a bit disappointed in that, but it does take Ethernet, so I have mine connected that way. The Sonos app is easy to use, and the setup was straight forward, and my only issue was trying to connect it to my Wi-Fi, which it would not do so after a little research, I found out that it only supported 802.11 N standard. The speakers are just over a foot tall and 7.5” wide. They come in white, but they have a paintable surface so you can match the surroundings to blend in. A hefty mounting bracket is included along with some insulation material to keep moisture out. I have mine mounted under my awning so they will not be exposed to direct weather, but these are designed to withstand full exposure. The Sonos amp is an 8.5 x 8.5” small box that has some banana connectors on the back for the 2-channel speaker wire (not included). There is also a HDMI connector with ARC for your TV, an RCA input, Ethernet port, sync button, and power. On the front are three touch sensitive buttons for volume up / down and play/pause. Streaming music is achieved via the Sonos app when your phone is connected to the same network. I cannot wait for the weather to get warmer to I can enjoy my backyard more and I am looking even more to it with the Sonance outdoor streaming music system.
Pros:
Sound
Set up
design
Cons:
Price
speaker wire not included
802.11AC/AX not supported

Latest tech, some good and some bad

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 15.6” laptop has some very impressive specs and can deliver decent gaming performance and excellent PC performance. It’s not a perfect laptop and has a few flaws that might deter some from buying it.
Performance:
This can easily replace a desktop PC for daily windows tasks, but when it comes to gaming, you might want to stick with a desktop if you prefer the best performance that you can get. Included in the laptop is a Nvidia GeForce GTX 3070 with 8GB of RAM, but this is not a full power GPU and seems to underperform while delivering the FPS that a true gamer might demand. This mind you is at the highest settings with Ray Tracing turned on and WQHD (2560 x 1440) at 165Hz. If you step it down to Full HD 1280 x 1080, then the performance will also be boosted. Kind of a shame in my opinion, why purchase a gaming laptop with the latest hardware, only to not use it to its full potential. All my testing was with COD (2019) Warzone / Multiplayer and COD (2020) Cold War. I cannot imagine what a game like Cyberpunk 2077 will do to this PC and I suspect it will not play it very well with the highest settings. Another thing I noticed was the heat generation that this laptop produces. The exhaust heat and surface temperature near the exhaust vents can get extremely hot when playing very intense games.
The heat is blown onto the lower bezel of the screen, I am not sure if that will affect the screen at some point down the road, but that is something to keep in mind. The fans were blowing very loudly and were working hard to keep up inside. The CPU and GPU temps were elevated but they didn’t seem extreme so perhaps the fans are really working great to move the hot air out.
Features:
Dedicated volume, microphone, Asus Crate buttons allow for fast and convenient access to these features. Notably missing is a web camera, but that is not a big deal for me. The keyboard is well laid out and although it is missing a “print screen” button it has everything else. Also missing is a 10 keypad and that is due to the speakers that are placed on either side of the keyboard. They do sound great are loud. I did notice some popping when at full volume so I will probably avoid turning them all the way up going forward. Going back to the keyboard, it is backlit, and you can change the color of the entire keyboard only, there are no color zones or changing the colors of specific keys. I did not find this a big deal but keep that in mind. Typing on the keyboard is very nice as the keys are good sized and they have the perfect amount of travel that I like. The trackpad is very large, and it works very well. There is a fingerprint reader, and it is located at the power button. At first, I did not know where it was, and it is not obvious that it is a fingerprint reader. It functions about 80% of the time and others it just does not seem to work all that well. I can power on the laptop with my registered finger, and it will just start up windows, but occasionally it will not register, no big deal to me. Hopefully, this will be resolved with a later update to make it more reliable. The battery seems to last right around 6 or 7 hours with the default settings and the 200-watt power supply will fully charge up the laptop in about 2 hours. A great feature that the MyAsus software suite has is a battery management tool. This tool will allow you to change how the battery will be charged and has three modes. Full capacity mode charges up to 100%, Balanced Mode, charges up to 80%, and maximum lifespan mode, charges up to 60%. These modes claim to preserve the battery so you do not have to keep unplugging the laptop and essentially keep it plugged in all the time and it will not overcharge the battery. The Asus Crate software, has a dedicated button, is where you can fine tune the laptop to fit your current needs. You can monitor the temperature of the CPU, GPU and view the fan speeds. You can even redirect the power from the Nvidia RTX 3070 to the onboard video card to maximize battery life. It has some preset modes such as Windows, performance, Turbo, and quiet, but you can also do a manual adjustment to fit your needs. I just keep mine set to performance, and it has been fine for my needs. When the Nvidia GTX 3070 is not working, this laptop is very quiet, and I don’t even notice the fans running. It also stays cool as well. The 1 TB SSD is a middle of the road variety and does a fine job. I think my biggest complaint is that this laptop has two 8GB RAM chips, and one of them is soldered onto the board. So, if you were thinking of upgrading the RAM, you will lose the dual channel capability of it since you will not be able to pair them up. This is something to consider and they do make a 32GB version, but it is a lot more expensive. I nearly forgot to mention that I was given a free year of accidental coverage with this laptop and I had to accept the offer so be sure to take advantage of that offer. Overall, this is a feature packed laptop with the latest processing and graphics power, it can handle the latest games, but you might have to step the settings back a bit to get the best performance out of it. On paper, this is one heck of a beast, but there are some drawbacks, and it is not perfect, but for me it is pretty darn good.
Pros:
Normal operation – Quiet
Normal operation - cool
keyboard layout
speakers sound good
quick charge
screen brightness
Design
1 Year free accidental coverage
Cons:
Price
Very hot during game play
keyboard not zoned for backlight
Soldered 8GM RAM module
Quirky fingerprint reader
lack of web camera
Speakers pop at full volume

Designed for a life with less cleaning, the DustMagnet 5410i air purifier catches 99% of airborne dust before it settles on floors and surfaces. Independently tested for performance as part of the AHAM Verifide Program for room air cleaners, for a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 244 cfm for fine smoke particles, 265 cfm for pollen particles, and 266 cfm for dust particles. Recommended for medium rooms like a master bedroom, living room, or playroom, the 5410i model completely filters room air about every 12.58 minutes (approx. 4.8x an hour at 380 ft) on the highest speed. Patent-pending DustMagnet technology powerfully attracts airborne dust particles like a magnet. Two air intake points and a unique airflow pattern create a vortex effect in the room to capture dust before it settles. A stream of negatively charged particles clusters airborne dust particles, making them easier to capture. Once inside the air purifier, the particles stick to the positively charged pre-filters like a magnet. Equipped with HEPASilent filtration technology to kill germs and effectively trap 99.97% of airborne particles like allergens, dust, pollen, pet dander, mold, bacteria, and viruses down to 0.1 microns. Additionally, activated carbon is integrated throughout the filters to absorb gases and household odors from cooking, smoke, and pets. DustMagnet delivers more clean air using less energy and less noise, quietly cleaning the air with less noise than a whisper (31 dB) on low and up to a normal conversation (50 dB) on high – while using about as much energy as a light bulb (42 watts) on high. Air purifier not tested against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Designed to blend into your home like a great looking piece of Scandinavian-style furniture, the dual-use design features a convenient top surface to double as a side table and air purifier. With a design worth showing off, there’s no need to hide your air purifier, place it prominently in the room where it will be most effective. DustMagnet takes a simple approach to smart air quality management with proactive features such as Auto mode, Welcome home, and a five-color LED air quality indicator light. When Auto mode is enabled the air purifier will auto-increase fan speed when the particle sensor measures diminishing air quality conditions (when cooking, vacuuming, etc.) and returns to a lower speed once pollution dissipates. Activate the Welcome home feature (available March 2021) via the Blueair app and your air purifier will go into standby mode when you leave the house and turn back on as you approach home, reducing airborne dust for when you arrive. The Wi-Fi-enabled air purifier also allows you to control settings from almost anywhere with the Blueair app and voice-control via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant-enabled devices. Includes one set of combination particle and carbon filters with a maximum of 1-year filter life and two permanent stainless-steel pre-filters. DustMagnet proactively monitors filter use and pollution levels in real-time to accurately determine when you need a filter change. When it's time for a replacement, the Blueair app sends an alert with an option to order filters at the touch of a button. For optimal performance, we recommend cleaning the pre-filters with a vacuum or cloth weekly, or as often as needed. Replace the combination particle and carbon filters when the filter light indicates a filter change is necessary (roughly 6-12 months of 24/7 use based on pollution levels). At Blueair, our Swedish heritage inspires sustainability and quality at the heart of everything we do.

One step closer to being dust free
on March 8, 2021

from Sparks, NV
If you have an issue with dust in your house, then you should check out the Blue Air DustMagnet line of filters. My current house does not have a terrible problem with dust, but it does have some. After a week I would usually have a small amount of dust that would build up on my TV cabinet, but after using this for a week, I have seen a lesser amount of dust building up. My previous house had a much larger issue with dust, and it would build up daily and this would have come in handy for sure.
Setting up the DustMagnet was quite simple, just removing the plastic wrap around the two filters and screwing on the four stands that keep the unit about 6 inches off the ground. There is a quick start guide that will walk you thru the steps of setting up an account and attaching the DustMagnet to your Wi-Fi network. I have a Wi-Fi 6 network and it was able to connect to it, although it did seem that the app was sticking at 46% set up and then at 60% set up, so I walked away for a little while and it managed to complete.
The Blueair app is simple to use and is laid out well. You are given the outdoor AQI (air quality index) for your location and towards the bottom you can see how your indoor air compares. So far mine has always said “Excellent” but my AQI is around 27 which is excellent as well. Every year it seems we do have more forest fires and our AQI goes up and this will be interesting to see how it handles that. The app will also allow you to control the DustMagnets fan speed or set it to Auto or night mode. It also gives you the current life of the filters so you will know when to replace them. I have not investigated how much those filters cost so just be prepared to replace them in 6 months to a year, depending on how much cleaning it must do for your air.
The all-white minimalist design fits well in a modern or a classical home. My favorite part is it is designed to be used as a tray of sorts on top. I have mine positioned in our living room next to my recliner and I can now place a cup, remote control or other thing that I want to have handy next to me. It runs quietly on the lowest setting and you hardly know it is even on. I really look forward to this helping me with my allergies this spring since dust and pollen really make my nose go crazy and this should help me with that. If you suffer from allergies from dust and pollen or if you are just looking to clean up the dust from the air inside your home, you should check this out.

Awesome receipt scanner with many functions
on February 14, 2021
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The Epson RR-600W is a wireless receipt and document scanner that will allow you to quickly and easily scan in receipts and documents and organize them with the included software package. I have been using an Epson document scanner for a while now and I have grown to love it, however, mine only does one page at a time and it a portable version and must be connect via USB. This however, changes all of that. It is a full-size document scanner that can hold multiple documents in its auto feeder. The internal rollers remind me of the scanners that we have at work that handle multiple scans all the time.
Installing the scanner was quite simple, just plug it into power, set the date and time and install the software onto your pc and it will assist with setting it up. It will walk you though setting up onto your wireless network (I have 802.11AX) and how to connect your online cloud storage solutions such as Google Drive, DropBox, OneDrive and Evernote. You are also provided with a USB cable to connect the scanner directly to a PC as well. I used the wireless method and had zero issues with it.
The scanner has a 4” large bright and responsive touch screen that is easy to use and well laid out. You can perform your scanning functions from this screen as well as set up preferences. Scan to a computer, Network Folder / FTP, Email, cloud, Memory Device (USB stick), or WSD. When you select a scan source, you can then select either Single sided or double sided. The double-sided scanning will automatically ignore the blank side of paper and I use this feature all the time. The scan feeder will hold up two 100 sheets of paper and scan double-sided at a speed of 35 pages per minute according to Epson. The most I tried was 70 pages and it always scanned without a hitch. I was able to create searchable PDF’s, which means I could go back later and search for a key word and it would search and display the word every spot it was found. The Epson ScanSmart Accounting Edition software also can link up with accounting software such as QuickBooks or Quicken for easy management of expenses.
I hardly every give a product 5 stars, but this scanner really earns it. I highly recommend this for anyone with a small business or if they have a lot of receipts, invoices, or documents they want to back up and convert to digital archives, the price is a bit steep, but this is a powerful scanner and if you compare it to the scanners that I have at my work that do similar functions, this is a steal.

Runners will love these!
on January 14, 2021
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The Bose Sport Open Earbuds are a runner’s dream. These things are simply amazing, and I have been incredibly pleased with them, however, they are not without some drawbacks. First the good…fitment, I can wear these things for a few hours, and they feel great. They do not feel too heavy to me, but they do make my ears stick out a little bit due to the ear loop piece. After a few hours, my ears will start to ache a bit, but I never really wear headphones for that long, but I wanted to try it out. While going on runs I am able to hear my environment and they feel very secure, which is probably why after a few hours my ears start to ache.
Sound is incredible and I sometimes feel that I am listening to speakers that are elsewhere in the room, its hard to explain, but it just sounds very natural and the open design means that these do not have to have any kind of ambient mode to hear what is going on around you. Environmental sounds just enter your ears as they normally do. There is no gel piece that you insert into your ears and the speakers just drive sound into your ear canal. Only on a very loud setting can a person hear what you are listening to and when you have it up that loud, you won’t be able to hear anything outside either.
Battery life has been close to the advertised 8 hours and they are quick to charge back up. Charging is accomplished on a separate cradle device that requires a USB type A plug to charge them. The Case that it comes in is form fitting for the earbuds, but it does not have a charging function. I think this is a real missed opportunity here. Otherwise, the case is magnetically secured and very sleek looking. A big drawback is you have to bring the charging base with you and not just the carrying case, other brands have charging functionality built into their cases, so you don’t have to have to carry something else. I figured with the overall design and how big the ear hooks are, the battery should last 24 hours at least.
Button controls are basic, and I do wish you could control the volume, but the single button on the right earbud can power on/off both earbuds, FF, REV, and pause, the left can activate your voice assistant. There is a Bose Music app that can assist with connecting the device to your phone and I found it worked well.
Overall, for the money, these are well built, sound fantastic, and will get the job done.
Pros:
Fitment (short time)
Sound (Bose quality)
Secure fit
Open design
Build quality
Price
Cons:
Charging cradle needed
Case does not charge
Battery life
Ear ache after prolonged use
No volume control

Better tap water in minutes
on January 9, 2021
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The Filtrete under sink water filter system is a very inexpensive and simple way to improve the taste and quality of the water from your sink. I installed mine under the kitchen sink and I have noticed an improvement from the plain old tap water that came out. To be honest, I didn’t drink it much before since we have a filter system on our fridge that works pretty well, but I have compared the taste and it does make the tap water taste similar. Set up was a little frustrating for me, but that is not the fault of the kit itself…. directions are a little confusing, but I did a quick search on YouTube for the Filtrete installation and that helped me a lot. Most of my frustration came from the fact that I do not have much space under my kitchen sink and that is not the fault of this product. Once I got past the install frustration, everything else was good. The quick connectors are easy to install and just make sure they are pushed all the way in to prevent leaks. I did make that mistake on the water out tube. Everything you need for a standard install is included and you only need a drill, 3/18” bit, phillips head screwdriver, and a pencil to mark the location of where to mount the filter mount. Filters are good for about 2,000 gallons or 6 months and are not very expensive to replace, it is about half the cost of my fridge filter. If you are looking for better water out of the tap then I recommend you give this system a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Neat little speaker for small spaces
on December 21, 2020
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The Soundcore Flare 2 is a portable Bluetooth speaker that is pretty small but packs a decent amount of sound. It has a nice design that does not take up a lot of space and can blend in just about anywhere. There are some lights on the top and bottom rings that have multicolor pulses. I am not too big on the colors or the lights, but they are there if you want them and they are easy to turn off. I am impressed with the overall 360-degree sound, build quality and battery life. I was averaging around 12 hours of use with the lights on. I think this speaker is perfect for a small space such as an office or bedroom, but outdoor use, in my opinion, is not a strong suite, however, it does have the ability to link up with other speakers of the same for over 100+, so that would make up for the lack of sound I would think. I was not able to try this feature since I only have one. Another nice feature of this is you can charge it with a normal USB Type C cable, which makes it nice that you do not have to carry around a proprietary charger for it. Overall, this is a neat little speaker and provides sound that will be more than adequate for small spaces and I use it in my office at work and it has been perfect.

Great workout dumbbell

The Tru Grit 20-LB Hex dumbbell is a great dumbbell and comes at a perfect time when I try to stay at home as much as possible these days. It fits well in my hand and the grip on the handle is just right. I love the hex shape and it keeps the dumbbell right where I put it down. I only have one right now, but I plan on getting another 20-lb to even things out and a couple of 10-lb versions for my wife to use. The rubber does have a funny smell though, but I hope it will go away with time.

Ultra Short Throw, ultra entertainment
on November 30, 2020
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The Epson Epiqvision ultra short throw laser projector has simply amazed me. I guess I was living under a rock and I never realized that these types of projectors even existed. My projector experiences up to this point have always been the regular bulb type where you have to mount it many feet away from the screen and deal with people walking in front of it to disrupt your image. I am amazed at this technology and it might just force me to change up my main TV watching set up of a 65” OLED TV. For now, my screen solution is just using a light grey painted textured wall in a brightly lit room. Even with those suboptimal conditions, the image brightness is great, the resolution is not the best, but I plan on working on that soon with a real screen. I have read that an Ambien Light Rejecting (ALR) screen is recommended for these type of projectors and those are very expensive. Regular screens work and I have an outdoor blow up 114” screen that I use, but it is too cold out right now to test that out.
Setup was easy and very straight forward. Pairing the remote simple enough and I managed to stumble thru that ok. This projector is exceptionally large and heavy, but it is designed to sit on a table or cabinet that is positioned close to the wall. If you want to get the largest picture possible, you need to place the unit 15.2” away from the wall, but the smallest picture size is 61” and it has to be 1” from the wall.
This projector is packed with a lot of different features from the built in Android TV to Google Chromecast. There are a few streaming apps that are compatible with it and they are Disney+, Hulu, YouTube, YouTube Kids, HBO, and a few others. Noticeably missing are Netflix and Amazon Prime video. That is not too big of an issue since you can use Chromecast to stream those services, but I hope a future update will bring those apps as well. The user interface is pretty simple to use and my only complaint with it is when you are browsing left to right with the cards, they are positioned a little funky as the next card pops up in front of the next one in line. Not a big deal, but it is a visual thing that I do not like. The menu is responsive, and I have not noticed any lag so far. This projector must be connected via Wi-Fi and there is no Ethernet option so keep that in mind as well. The laser is rated at 20k hours of use and that is over 9 years if you use it 6 hours a day. There is also a small filter that I believe needs to be cleaned, but I couldn’t find any thing on that in the quick start up guide so I assume the projector will tell me when that needs to be replaced or cleaned. I do not think that is very much money to replace.
Overall, this is a great replacement for a 1080p TV and even though it is expensive, I don’t think you can buy a 120” TV for what this costs even after you factor in the price of an ALR screen. The 4k version of this is extremely expensive, but I don’t think I will miss out on the 4k content. Everything is in a great package and fits well with just about any surrounding décor.
Pros:
Easy set up
Short throw
Laser 20k hours of life
Chromecast built in
Safety feature
Cons:
Price
Missing Netflix, amazon video
Not 4K
Missing Ethernet

The Eero Pro 6 AX4200 is using the very latest 802.11AX wireless standards that requires you to have a device that can handle that if you truly want to see the fastest speeds. Fortunately, this is backwards compatible with previous standards (802.11AC) so you will not be left out in the cold even without the latest and greatest. You also must have a Gigabit speed from your ISP if you want to see the full speeds, but I do not have that myself, hopefully you do.
Setup was as easy as can be. Downloading the eero app will walk you thru the process from start to finish. It took me about 10 minutes to set mine up. You can set these up to be wireless (which I did) or you can use a wired method for the fastest possible speeds, but I was not concerned with that. I recreated my Wi-Fi network with the same name and passcode as before and nearly all my devices connected right away. I only had issues with a 5-year-old AMD Toshiba laptop and a 3-year-old WeMo plug, neither of these devices would see the new network no matter what I did. I ended up attaching one of my older nodes (of another brand) to this system and created a separate wireless network that was 802.11AC and then those devices connected no problem. Each node has two Ethernet ports that are auto sensing so you can use any of these and plug one into your modem and the other port I have a Linksys 8 port gigabit switch plugged into that and then I can plug in my 7 devices that require a hard connection.
Coverage in my 2400 sq ft home is easily covered by this three pack, which is rated for up to 6,000 sq ft. I am seeing great signal all thru my house on both floors and even coverage in my yard which will make things nice when we have people over again.
Speed has been great with these, but I do not have a super-fast connection from my cable provider, but I am getting my full speed that I am paying for. I do have about 45 devices that are always connected, which consists of, TiVo’s, tablets, Laptops, Phones, Arlo cameras, smart assistants, etc., and there have been no complaints of slowdowns at all.
Build quality seems very solid, these are much bigger than the regular eero 6 and the previous generation eero’s. They have some weight to them, and they feel very well built. The design is minimalistic, and they can easily blend in with just about any environment.
The eero app is very well laid out and is easy to use. You can group devises to different profiles and it will keep track of usage per device and profile, so if you are interested in that type of thing, you can see who is hogging all of the bandwidth. I do like the pause internet feature that is built in; I can easily turn off the connection on my kids tablets when it is time for them to put them down. Also, there is some security that is built in, but you can pay extra for it if you want to use it past the trial period, but for the price of this system, I feel that should be included.
In the end, this is a great mesh system that provides great coverage and good speed. A little on the expensive side, but this will be a system that will be relevant for years to come.
Pros:
Speed
Set up
Build Quality
App features
Futureproof
Cons:

How is the mic monitoring? Is it loud enough? The gen 1’s had pretty quiet mic monitoring, did they improve upon that or is it the same?

the mic monitoring seems very sensitive and you can adjust it with a separate volume. You can crank it down to pretty loud.

Power disturbances can cause equipment damage and lessen your electronic devices lifespan.During power disturbances, you also risk losing connection to your critical devices. Ensure you keep connected to what matters the most with APC Back-UPS.

What replacement battery does the UPS take?

the battery is non-user replaceable. I am sure you can crack it open and replace it, but its not like the old units that had a removable cover to replace the battery.

Does this work for Xbox? The older version did

It only works with using the 3.5mm cable, not using the USB dongle, so you won't get the added benefit of your custom sound profiles.
