compact, versatile and sleek

The HyperDrive Duo 7 in 2 USB Type C Hub is designed for a MacBook Pro, but they have made it compatible with other devices as well. I have used it with my HP Chromebook and my Dell XPS as well as my HP desktop PC. My Chromebook and my Dell are limited in the amount of USB ports on them, so it is nice to be able to add additional functionality using the HyperDrive Duo. The device requires a Type C connector (included is a short type C to Type C extension cable). Once that is hooked up you now have access to two USB type A 3.0 ports, two USB Type C ports that support data and power delivery, a microSD slot, and SD memory card slot, and last but not least a HDMI Hi-res 4k at 60Hz output. However, I was not able to test out the 4k Hi-res output. Everything else works like a charm on this little device. The design is a machined metal type and it looks sleek and modern. You are given a little leather type carrying case that really complements the hyperdrive well. Power is provided via the USB Type C connector, so you don’t have to worry about external power at all. Overall, it helps me reduce clutter and provides a useful amount of ports that easily fits in my laptop bag.

Great 4 camera 4k system
on June 11, 2020

from Sparks, NV
The Lorex 8-Channel, 4-Camera Wired 4K surveillance system is a very high-quality system with great video and is easy to configure using the Lorex Home App. My biggest grip is having to wire this up, but to be honest, that is the best way to do things in the long run. You don’t have to worry about batteries dying and you can mount these in places that you only have to get to once. The 4k video quality is overkill for my needs, but I did test it out and it does look good on my 4k TV. I don’t believe the HDMI cable that is included is a 4k cable though, at least it doesn’t appear to be, I used a cable that I already had wired in my walls for my TV. Setting up the system is easy using the included instructions. At first, I felt a little overwhelmed by the amount of cables and connectors that are included, but you just need to follow the steps and you will have it set up in no time. Minus the time it takes to run the cables of course, but you should hook up each camera and set things up BEFORE you install them, just incase you have a faulty camera or wiring. After you get the cameras hooked up, you can run through the set up of configuring the device to your home network. You can name your cameras, customize your recording options (motion areas, schedule) and customize your smart motion detection settings. The system can recognize vehicles and people. I have some high traffic areas and I was getting a lot of push alerts on my phone, so I had to play with the settings more to cut down the motion detection areas. These cameras also have built in sirens and spotlights on them. The sirens are not very loud, and the lights are not very bright, but it would let someone know that you are watching them if you spot them on the video feed, this is what Lorex calls Active Deterrence.
There is a smart search feature that you can filter out the motion events. The filter allows you to search by date and time, person or vehicle, and area. I found it to work well as I tested it out. They claim up to 35 days of storage but with certain criteria for that. I don’t think it will record 35 days at 24/7 though.
Overall this is a very robust system with a log of features and advantages over a cloud-based system. The only downside to me is the fact that you must wire it up, but you only must do that once and then you never have to touch the cameras again. That being said, the fact that you can expand this with 4 more cameras later on down the road and it’s two-year warranty makes this a great deal.
Pros:
Nice install experience on Device and phone App
Expandable up to 8 cameras
No monthly fees
You control your videos
Remote access to the cameras
Video quality
2 year warranty
Cons:
Wiring the cameras

Fresh air comes at a high price
on May 12, 2020
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The Molekule Air Mini is a very interesting air purifier device. The rated room size is 250 sq ft and the room that I have it in is my master bedroom, which is about 320 sq ft total including the bathroom and walk in closets. So it’s a little bigger than what this device is rated for, but I have noticed a big improvement in the air quality over all. My allergies are really bad this time of year and I am usually sneezing quite a lot, but after using this for the past week, I haven’t been sneezing quite as much, even though the outside air pollen count has remained pretty much the same. I am impressed with this unit and my wife agrees with me. She has also noticed that the air quality seems much better. The operation and set up of this is very simple, you plug it in and turn it on via the recessed circle on the top. It’s touch sensitive and easy to use, but also easy to miss. It is not marked very well, and you can easily hit the wrong area. It’s dead center and you just have to get used to hitting the spot. Each tap will cycle through the 5-speed fan and the first two are very quiet, speed 3 is a little noticeable, 4 is loud and 5 sounds like a jet engine at full throttle. I keep mine on 3 and we enjoy the slight white noise at bedtime. The filter inside is not a standard HEPA filter, but a PECO filter. This is their proprietary technology and is uses UV light to kill bacteria, viruses, mold, allergens, and VOCs that are pulled through the device. I have no way to measure this scientifically, but they do have a lot of information on their website of the technology and how it works incase you were interested. https://www.molekule.com/papers
This little device is easy to move around, and you can easily take it from room to room if you wish and it seems to take a short amount of time to fully filter out a sealed 250 sq ft room. From my observations, roughly a little over an hour according to my unscientific method. Replacement PECO filters are $75 for a filter that lasts 6 months or you can subscribe for $99 a year for two filters.
The Molekule app was not working properly for me. The set up seems pretty straight forward to set up the Wi-Fi connection. Following the prompts you get to the actual connection and you have to hit the “help” link so that you know that you have to set up a “new” Wi-Fi connection named: Molekule, WPA2, and Molekule as the password. Then you get to a section where you can put in the Wi-Fi information that you want the Molekule to connect to….only for me it bounced between “connection successful” to this connection could not be made. After many resets (holding down the Molekule’s power button for 10-15 seconds until the lights danced) I still was unable to connect to it. I finally gave up. I am not sure what functionality the app gives, but I don’t see the point if I leave the device on all the time. I understand that this device has been out for a while so the app features should be ironed out. That being said, I am not using an apple device and it does state that it supports an iPhone 5 and higher along with Android phones and it could be my Linksys Velop whole home mesh Wi-Fi system is not compatible either.
Pros:
Clean air
sleep better
quiet operation
slick, simple design
Cons:
Price
expensive filters every 6 months
app not working for me

Great sound, fit, price...try them out!

The JVC HA-A10T truly wireless ear buds seem like an absolute steal for the price that they are selling them for. Don’t get me wrong, they are not feature rich and don’t offer touch controls or anything beyond a single button that on each ear bud that either pauses/resumes with a short press or FF (right) RW (left) with a long press. Other than that, you can’t control the volume from them and there is no voice assistant either. However, not everyone requires all those extra features, or they don’t want to spend a lot to get them. These are a great balance of looks, fitment, features, and sound quality. Sound quality is really good on these, and I was surprised. When I first put them on I was not impressed, so you might have to spend some time trying out the many different memory foam or gel pieces that you are presented with. Once I found the right pair, they fit snug and sounded great. Bass was deep and the trebles where high. They do fit deep in your ear canal and after a while I did find them to be less and less comfortable, so I might have to play around with the different ear gels some more. Battery life is rated at 4 hours and the charging case holds another 10 from what JVC claims. I have had similar real-world results with those numbers. The case top is secured with a magnetic clam shell top and the earpieces also held in place with magnets. It is a satisfying feeling and they do feel secure in there. Phone call quality was lacking on these, but not horrible. Pairing the devices was a breeze and the connection between them and my Galaxy Note 10+ does have an occasional choppiness that I haven’t experienced with my other headsets, however, that initial choppiness goes away after a few seconds and does not seem to come back. Over-all, for the money, you cannot go wrong with these and they might be the perfect ear buds for someone to get to do a trial run to see if they are prone to loosing something this small.

Great entry level gaming keyboard
on April 10, 2020
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
I have been using the Apex 5 keyboard for a little over a week now and I am really enjoying the experience of using it. I enjoy the clackety sound of the keys as you type on them and they do have a satisfying feel to them with some great range of motion. This is a hybrid design of a keyboard, not fully mechanical and as such has a membrane design underneath. The individual keys can be programmed (using the SteelSeries Engine 3) in the software and I found that easy to understand and use. There are a range of options and my favorites were to select the NUM LOCK, Caps lock, and scroll lock to be a different color than the rest of the keyboard when you have them set. There is no other indicator for them being activated as is the case normally on keyboards. This is a very reasonably priced keyboard for gaming, and I found it to preform just as well as my more expensive ones. One of my favorite features on the Apex 5 is the inclusion of a wrist resting area. It is not padded but it is comfortable, and you can easily remove it. It connects via magnets and just snaps into place with ease. The matte surface does show stains on it, for example, if I just put some lotion on my hands and the oil leaves residue upon it, however, it is easy to clean up. The keyboard itself is a pretty standard size and all the standard windows keys are right where you expect them to be and the 10 key is easily used as well. The OLED screen in the upper right corner is pretty interesting. You can scroll thru multiple profiles using the scroll wheel, adjust volume. This little screen is 128 x 40 and you can program little animated icons as well. I haven’t played around too much with that as it wasn’t a big feature for me. The USB cord is thick and is well built and I don’t see any issues there. The more I use this keyboard the more I enjoy it and you will enjoy it as well.

Pretty good but, some improvement needed
on February 8, 2020

from Sparks, NV
The Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H9 are a fantastic over-the-ear noise cancelling headphones. First let’s talk about the fit, in a few words, they fit great! My head is normal sized and these fit just perfect for me. They are not too tight or too loose where they want to fall off your head. I have worn them for hours on end and they are very comfortable and not too heavy for my likes. The build quality seems top notch as well. The headband is a lightweight metal and surrounded by some comfortable padding at the top. The outside of the headband is a leatherette type material, I do not think it is genuine leather, but it does feel nice and high quality. The ear cans slide up and down on the posts and the movement is secure and smooth. My only complaint with the fitment is with the opening in the ear padding, they are round in shape and my ears don’t fit perfectly inside them, so they touch the edges. I do wish the openings were a little bigger than they are. Sound quality is very good with these and I have not been disappointed with that one bit. They have deep rich bass sound and the highs are clear and crisp. Noise cancellation is very good, and I am happy with the way it blocks out everyday distractions while I have it turned on. Max volume is just about right for me. I have headphones that are louder, but I value my hearing these days, so I have no complains there. There is a transparency mode that enhances the background sounds around you and that works well. You cannot play music with that mode turned on though and I find that strange. I have played around with the app and every time you turn on transparency mode, the music stops. I have had other headphones that let those sounds enter so you can still be aware of your surroundings. I wouldn’t recommend wearing these in a busy environment while listening to music though. There is a dedicated google assistant button and it will allow you to hear notifications when you click it. I do like that feature. The app also has a few different listening modes at the touch of a button. Optimal, Commute, Clear, Workout and Podcast. You can also customize the sound between Warm, Relaxed, Excited, and bright. It’s easy to operate and find the right listening mode that you need at the time. Pairing the headphones was a bit of a struggle for me. I found the B&O app does need some work (at least at the time of writing this) and I hope they improve it. It took me a good 10 tries to finally get my Galaxy Note10+ paired with it properly. The touch controls are a little sluggish and lag a bit when you use them. I hope that is corrected in a future update. Right now, though I find myself avoiding them as much as I can. But you can turn transparency mode on and off by sliding up. I find it difficult to find the volume up and down area on the right ear. Overall for the price of these headphones, they do feel that they need some more work still and I hope updates fix the issues and due to that I cannot recommend these until they are fixed.
Pros:
Sound quality
Volume
Bass
Over-all fit
Noise Cancelling
Google assistant integration
Cons:
Transparency mode w/o music
BT pairing with App
Touch controls lag

Panasonic easy-to-use video baby monitor uses the same clear and secure (non-wi-fi) long-range DECT technology found in its top-selling cordless home phone systems. DECT systems offer clear, secure and interference-free signal strength up to 1500 feet* more than the length of four football fields, and twice the range of comparable monitors. Anywhere in or outside the home you can clearly and continually keep tabs on your child. The Panasonic baby monitor includes a bright 3.5-in. color monitor and easy controls that sync to an improved wide-eyed, wall-mountable monochrome night vision camera in the baby's room. The video camera can be controlled remotely to pan, tilt and zoom the camera from the baby monitor to look in on your child anytime. Improved long-life, built-in battery charging in the monitor stores power for up to 13 hours of standby time and up to 5 hours of power for continuous use. A smart motion sensor alerts you when the baby is awake or crying. A temperature sensor alerts you if the room is above or below a range you set. When activated, sensors sound a chime, illuminate a LED on the monitor and display notifications on the monitors screen. Microphones and speakers in both video camera and baby Monitor enable 2-way talk with anyone in the room. And, you can play gentle, soothing sounds that include five types of White noise and a choice of lullabies.

Easy to use and many features
on December 18, 2019
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The Panasonic long range baby monitor has made our lives a little easier and worry free when it comes to our little one. Our old system had recently died, and we found this to be a great replacement. I do miss the Wi-Fi feature of the old model, but this one is more secure and does not offer viewing beyond the synced 3.5” monitor. This is more secure and is not vulnerable to hackers gaining access to your camera. The features of this camera are abundant, and it is easy set up and use makes this a good choice for anyone. It offers smart sensors that can detect motion, sound, and temperature. You can customize the alerts as well and my favorite feature is blocking out part of the screen for motion detection, for example, if we go check on the baby then I have the front of the crib set to ignore motion in that area and it will ignore us as we check on her, but alert us when she moves.
Monitor picture quality is not the highest and you may not be able to see fine details, but the image is good enough so that we still subtle details like if our baby’s eyes are open (at night) or closed. This camera can also pan, tilt and zoom (2x) using the monitor. The settings on the monitor are a bit clunky to get into and you have to hit OK after selections and it just bothered me a little. Not really a deal breaker and just takes some time getting used to the way you navigate in the menu. Battery life has been decent, and the manufacture says up to 13 hours in stand by mode and up to 5 hours with the screen on. I think those numbers a little generous but close to what I was getting in my normal usage. I mostly just have it plugged in just to be safe and the power connector is a mini usb, which is a nice feature to have. The camera can also play some white noise or lullaby sounds for your baby, but I have a white noise machine in her room that does a better job and sounds better. I did not test out the “long range” of this device, but I did move the monitor to the other side of my back yard and the connection was still very strong. This is a good option in the crowded field of baby monitors and I would recommend this to my friends and family.

Great ink tank printer
on December 9, 2019
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The HP Smart Tank 651 wireless all in one printer is easy to set up and prints great. Setting up the printer was easy and straight forward. HP provides easy to follow documentation and they also recommend that you keep the box and packing materials to secure the printer if you plan to transport it anywhere, especially the box that holds the print heads in place. There are a few steps in the setup and initialization, after powering it on, takes a few minutes, then follow the prompts and prepare the ink. They are spill free and easily snap into place to fill up the tanks, be sure NOT to squeeze the bottles. After you fill up the ink tanks, you must install the print heads and then you are prompted to print out an alignment page and you use that to calibrate the printer. Be sure to download the HP smart app or visit 123.hp.com to finish the setup of your printer. This is when you connect it to your Wi-Fi and complete the set up. I have had other “tank” type of printers and this is the first one that I have had that actually has separate print heads. I am happy with the overall operation of this printer.
The ADF on top works well for scanning and copying. Printing is great on this printer and I am sure with it being an HP it will run forever and always just work. HP states that this will print 22 pages per minute at the fastest (draft) setting. It also has fax color as an option, but I don’t have a phone line and I was not able to test this out. I have had great luck with their printers in the past and this one seems well built and I have no worries about it. Printing from your mobile device is also supported here, I used the HP Smart App to accomplish this, but it also supports Apple AirPrint as well.
The best part of this printer is that you are given two years of ink in the bottles and depending on your printing it will easily last you that long with normal home use. These types of printers have flipped the conventional pricing for home printers. They are more expensive upfront, but the consumables are inexpensive, and you end up saving a lot more money this way.
Pros:
2 years of ink
Printer speed
Color Fax option
Duplex printing
HP Smart App
Cons:
upfront price

Fun way to video chat with family and friends
on November 26, 2019
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The Facebook Portal TV with Alexa is a fun and interactive way to video chat with your friends or family. This device connects to your TV by way of HDMI and turns your TV into a large video chatting device. The camera on the Portal TV is a 12-megapixel camera that has full 1080p HD quality. 12 high quality microphones help to capture the audio on this thing, and I found it to work well. My daughter and my grandkids were on one end and my kids (yes, I have young kids and grandkids too) were on my end. 4 kids all excited and talking at the same time was a little too much at certain times, but for the most part the audio quality was great, and the “adults” could talk and carry on conversations. The pan and zoom features of the camera work great as well. Video quality does degrade a bit if it zooms in, probably due to the digital zoom) but when it is not zoomed in the quality is great.
Some of the other features that the Portal TV offers is augmented reality masks, playing games (while video chatting with friends), watching TV (Facebook watch party) together while video chatting, and story time with some cute kids’ stories. My girls love the augmented reality masks when we do the story time apps and makes them part of the story as well.
I did experience a small network issue after about 30 minutes, I noticed that my internet speed had dropped down to 3.19Mbps and the video and auto became very choppy, but a quick call disconnect and reconnect I saw my speed go up to the advertised speed of 102Mbps again. I don’t know if the Portal TV was to blame or my router was. Overall the quality has been good, and I haven’t experienced that same issue again.
I was initially worried about privacy, but happy to see that the camera does have a privacy cover that you can close, and you can also mute the microphone on it. If you are worried about leaving this on all the time, then simply just close the cover and mute the microphone.
Over-all this is a fun way to interact with your family and friends who are afar and can make it seem like you are all in the same room. It was fun to sit on the couch and watch them sitting on their couch as well and still feel close.

Useful in helping me get to sleep faster
on November 16, 2019
Posted by: jago
from Sparks, NV
The Philips SmartSleep Connected Sleep and Wake-Up light therapy lamp is a very interesting device and the concept is a good one in my opinion. Normally I wake up naturally to the sun shining in my room, but that changes when we must turn our clocks back and I still have to wake up at the same time to get to work on time. This light can simulate the morning light that I am used to, and I find that I am having an easier time (especially this time of the year with turning the clocks back) waking up and feeling refreshed. There are many settings to play with when you connect the Philips SleepMapper app. For example, you can choose from different sunrises such as, Sunny day (bright white), Nordic white (less bright white), Island Red (mixture of white and red), and Caribbean red (bright red). You can adjust the light intensity as well as the duration of the sunrise. You can set multiple alarms as well as different sounds and if you are a heavy sleeper and need more to wake you up, there is a PowerWake feature which is an extra alarm (in case you sleep thru your others) that will activate with a loud sound and bright flashing lights, this is something my wife needs, but I don’t.
The sleeping features are pretty good as well. I set mine to start about 45 minutes before I need to be sleeping and I find the sunset lights a nice touch and the soothing sounds of waves help me to fall asleep faster. The app also has a bedtime tracking feature, but I haven’t investigated that much in the short time that I have had it. Over time that might provide some insight into better sleeping habits though and I look forward to checking that out more.

Navigate your desktop precisely with this Corsair Dark Core gaming mouse. It uses low-latency Bluetooth for syncing with compatible devices, and its 16000 DPI optical sensor provides high accuracy performance during game play. This Corsair Dark Core gaming mouse has a contoured shape and interchangeable textured side grips for a comfortable feel in hand.

Asking the people that bought this mouse, have they fixed the wireless connection issues ??? Any software updates to address the problem ??? Thank you in advance.....

I have been using it for a few days now, I did do a firmware update right away and I haven't noticed any connection issues yet. I have been using BT and 2.4GHz dongle.

Only at Best Buy Defend your home from intruders with this SimpliSafe security system. Its wireless design provides reliable, multilayer protection and avoids interruptions from cut phone lines and power outages, and it connects to an app for remote operation. This SimpliSafe security system is easy to install and customizable to homes of any size for flexible use.

Can more entry sensors or detectors be added to this unit afterwards? Or is the maximum amount four/one?

I am not sure if there is a max number of sensors, but you can add more if you need them. I am just not sure what the number is. But if you are planning on putting them on an area with many windows, they recommend getting a glass breakage sensor and motion sensor to cover those areas.

Will currently installed SimpliSafe sensors, etc. work with this new base unit, or will they all need to be replaced? Thank you.

I believe they need to be replaced with the new sensors. I saw that someone asked this very question on Facebook and simpisafe responded that the new unit only works with the new sensors.

Listen to your playlist in peace with these Sony headphones. They have a 40mm dome driver to deliver the full depth of audio, and the noise cancelling feature minimizes outside disturbances for a better listening experience. These Sony headphones have a battery life of up to 30 hours for extended jam sessions.

What walkman are compatible with these headphones?

only the tape walkman. j/k I think most devices can pair with this. You also get a 3.5mm cable and a 3.5mm jack on the headphones so yes, an old tape walkman will work.

Do these headphones have the same cracking problem that the last version had! I am planning to buy them soon and I want them to last for the price. Thank you.

I haven't noticed any crackling with these, but I have only had mine for about a week.

is there there an option of dvd?

just look for a usb type C (or type A) dvd drive, but if you mean an internal one, then no, not an option

Hi. I just bought this and the screen continually adjusts the brightness/contrast automatically. I've searched everywhere and did the fixes stated online but with no improvement. Has anyone else had this issue? Thanks!

mine does the same thing. I don't have a solution though.

Hello, I bought the my xps 2 days ago. I am really concern about the cooling system because it is way too warm. Compare to my friend MacBook Air, it's Much warmer. Does anybody feel the laptop too warm? Even when It is just on charge Or in light use...

mine gets a little warm, but not too hot. I think its pretty safe and i don't fear it getting too hot that it will burn itself out. However, I haven't had mine running super intensive processes for long periods of time.

Can I add additional ssd on this laptop? Is it expandable?

its a sealed device, and there is no place to install an additional SSD, but you can get a microSD and use that for storage as well. You can probably make windows think its another HD and use it as extended storage.
