Vacuum OK but it has a problem with its remote

The efficacy of the vacuuming itself is OK, but unfortunately the remote control on this particular unit has a range of about one foot, so it's basically worthless. The batteries in it tested fresh, but anyway I tried new ones with no improvement. The problem may just be in the remote itself which should be easy to replace, but it could also be on the vacuum side, so I may end up returning the entire unit. Worse of course it could be a design flaw.
