headphones do not function without battery

There was no indication when purchasing these headphones that they only work with a battery. Sound was just OK.
Sony MDR10 did a better job of noise cancellation as it has 3 settings. Airplane, rail, office noise cancellation. By pressing a button while in use the headphones adjust to the environment automatically.
