I use this slim drive to travel with copies of my digital library (music & movies). I am very careful to protect this thing from rough treatment. While access time is average, the size is appealing. HOWEVER, this unit has crashed three times during no travel (meaning it sits on my desk). Thankfully it is not something I depend upon for work. The last crash took out its firmware and now it's a paperweight. After talking to Geek Squad, I find that these models of Seagate have a much higher failure rate than other vendors. Cost to fix is now approximately same as replacement. Quoth my raven, "Seagate never more."

Can I install this myself?

Are there instructions that are fairly easy to follow?
Yes. It is easy to install. Best installation when you have an Internet connection to look for updates but not necessary. It is plug-n-play with firmware on the unit and an autoexec installation file.

Lighted Indicator

Can someone please tell me if there is a "light" that would indicate a back up is being performed. I have a La Cie with a blinking light that tells me a back up is in progress.
Thank you
Yes. There is a white light that flashes when the drive is being accessed in the upper left hand corner. You can see it in the photo unlit. It flashes just like your HD light on your tower or laptop when it is accessed.

replacing internal hard drive.

Can I use this to replace my failing internal hard drive?
I don't recommend it. Internal HDs are protected from physical shock inside the chassis. Also, the access time on a internal is faster due to the SATA connecting directly to the bus. This is only best as a backup or sharing drive, not a primary drive.
