Still a Pro with Memory and SSD Upgrade
on November 13, 2016

I needed to replace my current laptop months ago. Although I like Windows 10, the average user will not know how or be able to (depends on Windows version) to *really* disable those automatic updates that take up bandwidth and restart the computer at inopportune times. Windows 10 requires a lot of maintenance because it is easier to get viruses or spyware on that type of OS. I was ready to try something new after using almost every version of Windows only for almost thirty years now. That said, I am a tech enthusiast, who needed an overall great choice for personal use, college classes, and an occasional work-related project.
I decided to wait until the new MacBook Pros came out, but I was disappointed. Thin is not in. People need ports, user-replaceable parts, and battery life along with features that make the product easier to use and more user-friendly. *After* the 2012 model (the ones with NO DVD drive), RAM is soldered in. The SSD on these new models is a proprietary part. It basically means one is stuck with whatever configuration the MacBook Pro is purchased in or buy an expensive proprietary part IF you can find it. Upgrades at purchase tend to be more expensive than swapping out the parts oneself. Also gone is the MagSafe charge port (had something similar on current laptop and it saved my laptop many times!), SD card slots, and USB ports--most everything that makes it a Pro and portable without all the wires and dongles. One more thing. The price on the new models increased, and this was before one considered the additional cost of the dongles—none are included. This 2012 model (made in 2015) has it all!
I bought this model on Sunday at Best buy in Conway, AR on November 6th. I could not be happier! A week later I updated the software to Sierra, traded out the hard drive for an SSD, bumped the memory to 16 GB, and can still run Windows within Mac by using VM software. What an improvement! I love the convenience of the built-in CD/DVD drive too.
The sales associate was very knowledgeable, and answered all of my questions. In particular, I have trouble seeing small print and was concerned about not having retina display. This screen is like HD 1080p so it works fine. I also had some concerns about video editing too. However, if I convert my 4k video to popular app's video format first, it is much easier to edit. A higher quality input file results in a clearer file or DVD too. This was a pleasant surprise because the graphics card is integrated on this and most laptops.
So far I have found it pretty easy to transition between MacOS and Windows though I had to Google a few things. If you can still find one on sale or clearance, it was about half the price of the new one even with the upgrades I did.

Inexpensive and Protects Disc

I just needed an inexpensive sleeve to protect the DVD until I could get it to the recipient who would then put it in their own jewel or soft carry case. These little sleeves are soft and come in colors, which make it easy to color code if needed. I was glad I could find what I needed, reasonably priced, and locally too.

Great External DVD and Blu-ray Writer
on July 24, 2016

I use this mostly with a desktop Dell XPS 8300 i7 processor running Win 10 Pro that did not come with a blu-ray burner and a Microsoft Surface Pro (first generation) that does not come with a built-in DVD / blu-ray drive at all also now running Win 10 Pro. I have also used it to install Windows on laptops with broken drives and more. It really has come in handy. Note that this external LG DVD / blu-ray drive does require two USB ports. With the Surface Pro, I just use a Belkin USB 3.0 3-Port Hub with Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, Model B2B128, that was also purchased locally at Best Buy. This is not a slot drive, but a has a tray that comes out when a button is pressed on the front. This drive comes with older versions of Cyberlink's Power2Go, PowerDVD, PowerProducer (I prefer PowerDirector), and MediaShow. You can use these versions to upgrade to the newer version of software for less. I have used other video editing and burning software, and Cyberlink is my software of choice right now for these purposes, and I have other Cyberlink software too. PowerDVD is great for watching movies. Power2Go is great for utility type disc tasks and social media backup including preserving special memories others share online, which you can now burn to DVD or blu-ray. If you are wanting a portable DVD *and* blu-ray writer that is compatible with Windows and MAC, then take a look at this one.

The best Lifeproof case so far!
on July 2, 2016

I have an iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold--unfortunate this case covers up that up. On the flip side, I will be more likely to enjoy a phone without a broken screen or a dead battery. This case combines protection of an Otterbox and function of extra battery too in basically the same size case though it's a bit heavier. Even with the extra battery life of the plus model iPhone, this extra battery life has come in handy! Unlike the Mophie battery case, which works great for another older iPhone we have, this Lifeproof Fre Power provides waterproof protection and a raised edge around the front of the phone that would protect the front screen. The sides have a soft, grippy texture that make the phone easy to hold. So far my case has worked as described providing an extra full charge. What I do not like is the price. I passed on the first round hoping they would come down in price, and it has some if one watches for sales. This case also comes with its own charging cable. I would have preferred to use the Apple lightening cable since I already have several made for iPhone ones, and some are longer in length. With this case, I would be hesitant to use any cable besides a Lifeproof one. You can use Apple charging blocks--I already have some iPad ones. I can not comment on the sound quality through the earpiece. I use made for iPhone hearing aids so the sound goes directly to them. So far people do not say they have trouble hearing me when the phone connection itself is good. If they do, be aware it is a little difficult to get the charge door open with just a fingernail. A coin works well though. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase, and think this is the best Lifeproof case so far. The case is less than the cost of a screen replacement. So far, I have not broken any screens, and that is because I have always used Otterbox or Lifeproof cases which protected against flat and side drops. Would love to see a color that would compliment rose gold and one for the iPhone SE model.
A note for those who have not purchase an iPhone yet. If screen size and OIS feature in the camera of the plus model are not deal breakers, this battery case for *just* the iPhone 6s (not the Plus model) would have made it the perfect size and fit for me. For some the iPhone Plus in the case will make a bit of a chunk to carry around.

The Next Best Thing Could Have Been Better
on June 20, 2015
Posted by: pinkpower
from Arkansas
My phone needed replacing, but I kept it going waiting for the next best thing. When the regular s6 came out, it was a disappointment to find out that it didn't have water resistance, had a too small battery that was not even user replaceable later on (this phone is glued together and requires a heat gun to carefully separate the back and front from the main body), or had the option of SD storage (but at least one can choose 32 GB, 64 GB, or 128 GB internal). The battery also was too small to get me through a full day and the phone too fragile.
I was really excited when I saw read the rumors the "Active" version would be coming out soon. This phone is everything great about the s6 but functional, durable, practical, and ALMOST exactly what I was looking for.
I switched from iPhone to Android because I loved to customize my Phone. I like that I have more choices of fonts and colors, which make it easier for me to see and use my phone. The s6 even adds theming so I can personalize my phone even more. I also have a Samsung TV, and the built-in IR makes my phone a handy remote control too. The apps integrate better with each other making the phone more usable for practical purposes. I also like the built-in heart rate monitor and health app too.
There are lots of reviews on what this phone does. The features I like most are the ones that set it apart including the water resistance, built-in durability, and a great camera in a phone! This along with the increase in RAM, latest software, and great screen are a winning combination! Life happens though so I want the more durable “Active” version. Although there are waterproof cases available for some phones, they can distort sound or make it difficult for people to hear you. I can use an Otterbox with this. I always would have a great camera to capture those pictures and videos in a phone that is built for practical use. Yes, I normally go for the pretty and pink things. However, a white camo in a gray Otterbox in a phone is just fine with me. The white camo is nice looking and thoughtfully designed with texture on the back and buttons to aid in a comfortable grip.
Then I realized it only came in 32 GB with approximately only 25 GB available to the user. Apps can be disabled but not uninstalled. I could get around that I think. There are adapters that would let me connect to the micro USB charge port to record those longer videos. I would just have to utilize cloud storage and transferring older files no longer currently used elsewhere. However, when I looked at how the SIM card slot was designed, why could Samsung have not designed the SD slot this way too? Let the consumer decide if they want to trade speed versus storage especially on a model where other storage sizes was not even given as an option.
Also, the consumer should have the option to put older software back on the phone especially when new software causes problems. Unfortunately, this phone does not allow that either. If you update and the update has issues, you are stuck with the issues until AT&T fixes them. Updates can be far and few in between.
The biggest plus and minus is the battery. It is a generous 3500 mAh and should easily last me all day but still sealed. Really sealed. And it and looks like it too will require a heat gun to replace it later at some point in time only I cannot not determine if the back comes off at all on the "Active" model looking like one has to remove the display just to replace the battery! The battery may have to be replaced by carefully separating the front (or maybe the back panel) with a heat gun. Since there is no Samsung service center in the state I live in, it will require a mail-in service. To preserve the water resistance, I would not trust it to anything less than an authorized service center. I’ve had a few devices where the battery goes bad. This concerns me. If the sealed battery last two to three years, it is possible the original owner will move onto using another phone. However, more and more people do not have contract plans anymore. Instead, they are buying phones on installment plans or cash now making the expense of upgrading often more of an issue. Whereas these expenses used to be buried in the cost of the plan, it is clear to see what you are paying for the phone and plan now. Also, these older phones can be passed along to other family members or are still useful for other purposes especially with their high-end specs! They are still so much better than the pay-as-you go phones.
I would recommend this phone to a friend as long as they know that this phone has a sealed battery and will require and authorized service center to replace it at a later date. Because of the glued together design, any repairs on this phone will be difficult and will need to be done by a service center including cracked screen, camera replacement, charger port replacement, etc.
The phone is 5+ stars except for the sealed battery. A better design would have been to secure the back with screws--"mock" ones are already there for looks anyway. The inside of the back should have a rubber seal if needed While the battery does not have to be easy to take in and out, it should be user replaceable in the future. This battery WILL require an authorized service center because the average consumer will not have the special tools or skills for this.
The lack of SD storage and non-user replaceable, sealed battery is the only reason I deducted stars. I should mention this phone does not have the Touch ID either, but that is not an issue with me, but I do not see why they could not incorporate it. The s5 has it, and it is a water resistant phone.
4 Stars Overall (limited storage doesn't make sense with the great camera and video)
1 for Repairs
Yes, I would recommend to a friend as long as they understand this phone will require an authorized service center to make even simple repairs that you could normally have done locally with other phones. However, you are getting a more durable, water-resistant phone that may require less repairs.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I have broken two otterboxes, but my phone did survive. My child's otterbox also broke, but the phone did survive as well. The other problem we had with the otterbox is the silicon cover would stretch out of shape, and the case was bulky.
The Lifeproof protects against water, dirt, snow, and shock damage all in a case that is lightweight, slim, and slides comfortably in the pocket. The pink is a nice shade with a hint of sparkle if you look at it just right. The gray part is made of different material making it easy to have a good hold on the phone. It looks like the phone itself is pink or whatever color you choose.
I just use apple chargers or accessories or other brands with the same design or an adapter if needed to use the charge/accessory port.
I don't use my headphones much, but you do have to have a special cord which is included in order to use headphones.
As with any case, there is a increased risk of the screen breaking if the screen comes in contact with a sharp, pointed object like a rock.
I do recommend this case to other family members and friends and would like to get ones of these for my iPad when available. Too bad lifeproof does not make these for iPods. The silicon on the Otterbox for those is tearing.
What's great about it: Protection it provides, design, and colors available.
What's not so great: May need an adapter for chargers/accessories to work because of charger opening design.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Does this come with a movie maker?

iMovie was on mine. I upgraded to MacOS Sierra almost immediately, and iMovie is still on my MacBook Pro.
