Best adjustable dumbbells I have used
on February 17, 2021
Posted by: darien87
from CA
In the age of Covid, getting a good workout in at home is definitely a challenge. I've used a few different sets of adjustable dumbbells in the past and they each vary in looks and ease of use. I currently have a set of simple ones that I just put plates on the ends and spin a threaded metal collar over the plates to secure them. These are about as inexpensive and low-tech as you can get. The drawbacks are that it takes forever to switch weights and I have to have different sized plates all over the floor.
Now the Jaxjox dumbbells simply have a display with + and - buttons built into the plastic base that holds them. Changing the weight is done with a press of a button. The handles have some sort of locking piston inside them that expands or contracts when you are decreasing weight. You can acutally hear it move when it is doing its' thing. Changing weight only takes about 5 seconds, very quick and easy. They also look pretty cool. Other adjustable dumbbells look like some sort of alien torture device.
The only issues I have with these dumbbells is that I feel that the handles are a little too thick. They are not hard to grip but if they were a little thinner, they would be more comfortable. Maybe I just have small hands. Also, plate aligment can be an issue at times when you are putting the dumbbells back into the base. Sometimes one of the plates will not line up correctly so you have to be somewhat careful when putting them away, (see photo). This can be problematic when you are fatigued after a heavy set.
Something I found strange is that the set comes with charging cables but not chargers so you will have to use one from your phone or other device. Not a huge deal and honestly most people should have some of these lying around but it can be inconvenient if you have to unplug your phone to charge these dumbbells. Battery life is pretty good though. A full charge on these lasted me about 2 weeks.
I wish the dumbbells went higher in weight. 50 lbs just isn't enough to work the big muscles effectively. But they work well for most of what I do. Also, picking 50 dumbbells up off the floor might be an issue for people with back problems. It would be better to put these on some sort of stand or platform.

Wife loves it!
on July 9, 2020

The wife is an avid baker and has been saying for years that she wishes she had a stand mixer. I guess there are certain doughs she makes that are a little too much for our regular hand mixer. So I picked this one up for her and she practically jumped for joy.
She immediately used it to whip up multiple batches of cookies and says that it worked great. It was very easy to use. She was able to pretty much able to use it straight out of the box without even reading the manual. About the only issue she has with the mixer is that she wishes it came with a bigger bowl. But that is a minor gripe. She also wishes that it came with some sort of splash guard but I guess that is an accessory you have to purchase separately.
One thing to note is that this thing is very heavy. I guess it needs to be heavy to be able to work with stiff doughs and such and not bounce all over the place. Be advised that if you're a smaller person you might have trouble lugging this thing around. Find a place where you can put it on your counter and pretty much leave it.

Cleans your teeth
on October 18, 2019
Posted by: darien87
from CA
I hate going to the dentist. In fact I go 3 times a year because even though I brush and floss twice a day I build up a lot of plaque on my teeth for some reason. My dentist recommends the Oral B electric toothbrush and that's what I've been using for the last 3 years or so. But since the dentist cleans my teeth with an ultrasonic machine I figured this Philips unit might help to keep my teeth even cleaner.
Does it clean better than my Oral B? I honestly can't tell. I've only used it for a few weeks now but I can't say that I can see a difference. I would have to wait a few months until the next time I see my dentist to see if they notice anything. I will say that the vibration of the toothbrush is a bit off-putting. The buzzing it makes tends to vibrate certain parts of my jaw. I find that the toothbrush can be hard to keep in place as it wants to slide off my teeth a lot of the time, especially my front teeth. The vibration really seems to bother my back molars but not enough that it would make me stop using the toothbrush. It just feels a little weird. The toothbrush has 3 ultrasonic intensity setting and I ended up turning it all the way down to the lowest setting. I also don't like that the toothbrush automatically shuts off after you have brushed for 2 minutes. I like to brush a little bit longer, (I usually go for about 3 minutes or so). My Oral B will stay on after it has completed its cycle. I wish the Philips did also.
The Sonicare upp is pretty much useless though. The manual says that it has a feature where it will keep track of your brushing, even telling you when to move to the next section and if you missed a spot. Well this feature does not work with the 7300. Maybe it's for the higher priced models. So about all you can do with the app is see how many times a day you're brushing and order more brush heads if you need them. Like I said, pretty much pointless. Who wants to bring their phone into the bathroom when they're brushing their teeth anyway?
The battery life on this toothbrush is outstanding. I've used it for 2 weeks and haven't had to recharge it yet. My Oral B barely lasts more than 3 or 4 days.

Not bad, but not great.
on September 23, 2019

Over the years I have tried numerous types of headphones, (over the ear, on ear, earbuds) but have yet to find the perfect pair for me. My current pair is a set of JBL on ear headphones. They sound good but they pinch pretty hard on the ears yet will still tend to slip when I end over to stretch or do bending exercises like deadlifts.
When I saw that these Even headphones were the over the ear style I thought these might stay in place better at the gym. They do indeed stay in place quite well. I don't think I ever had an issue with them slipping off even once during my workout. The headphones are very comfortable and do a pretty good job of noise isolation.
Even's claim to fame on these headphones is their Earprint technology which enables you to optimize the sound output from the headphones to each of your ears. It accomplishes this by the user downloading an app and then going through a process where the headphones play a series of test tones in each ear to map how well you hear certain sounds. I found this process to be a bit problematic. First of all the room that you're in while you play the tones needs to be pretty much completely silent as the tones are pretty quiet. I found myself straining to know if what I was hearing was a test tone or just ambient noise from my room. It took me 4 tries before I ended up with a curve that I thought was good. One of the programs sounded decent but shifted the sound to the left a bit so that the music sounded like it was coming from slightly behind me and to the left. You can easily switch back and forth from using the Earprint settings or just playing sound raw, without any processing.
I found that the Earprint settings just seemed to make everything louder. Kind of like using the old "loudness" button back in the day. Since louder music always sounds better I wasn't really sure if the Earprint really made the music sound better or just louder. However I found that even with the Earprint settings I found the sound lacking. I wanted higher high's and lower low's. Also I didn't see anywhere that the app would allow you to customize the sound. I wanted to turn the bass and treble up a bit. These headphones seem to really accentuate the mid range frequencies.
These headphones also don't play loud enough for me. When I'm at the gym I want my music relatively loud to drown out all the other noises around me and these didn't really allow me to do that.
So for me these are just good heaphones that could be great if they allowed you to tweak the settings and played louder.
My search for the perfect pair of headphones continues.

An "active" MP3 player without Bluetooth? Really?
on August 9, 2019

Before procuring this player I just assumed that anything that was marketed as being for use during working out or running would naturally work with Bluetooth headphones. Who wants to deal with wires getting in the way? Well, no this player only works with wired headphones. That is already a deal breaker for me. Add to that the fact that this player feels extremely cheap. The buttons feel like they would break at any time. Also, the display screen got all scratched up after being in my gym bag for a single day! As far as the sound quality, I can't really give a solid opinion on that because I don't have any wired headphones to test this player with! Every set I own is bluetooth. I will say that the sound with the supplied cheapy headphones was terrible. Will this player sound better with higher quality headphones? Probably. But who cares?
This player is absolute garbage.

What you want in a dashcam
on July 18, 2019

I was recently backed into and although the woman that hit me immediately admitted it was her fault, it took her insurance company about a month to take responsibility and agree to fix my car. Had I had a dashcam to record the incident I could have avoided all of the headache and frustration that came with the process.
So when the opportunity to pick up a Nextbase dash cam came up I jumped on it. The camer is a nice size. I ended up putting mine directly in front of my cars rear view mirror and it almost hides there perfectly. The camera has a small LCD screen on it but honestly it is too small to really use for viewing your video files. However the camera has an app that you can use for viewing them on your phone. This is much more convenient that trying to watch them on the camera itself. I have a touch screen stereo in my car and I was hoping that I could hook the camera up to that to see video there but for some reason I couldn't get that to work.
The camera records in either 1, 2 or 3 minute bursts. So unfortunately you have to scroll through quite a few files to the exact one you might be looking for but it isn't that much of a hassle. Also I really like that as you are viewing video files, the camera also shows you the road and direction you were driving on at the time. Very cool.
You can record video in either 1440 or 1080 at 60 or 30 frames per second. Default is 1440 but I chose to change that to 1080. I don't see the need to record in anything other than 1080.
Also, be advised that you will need a MicroSD card to record video as I don't believe that the unit has internal memory.
All in all I am very happy with this camera. It does exactly what I wanted it to do and the size makes it pretty unobtrusive. I called Nextbase customer service a couple of times with questions and their agents were very friendly and helpful.

Decent sound but major connection problems
on June 4, 2019
Posted by: darien87
from Morgan Hill
I decided to try these headphones out for my workouts at the gym. I currently use a set of Under Armour Project Rock headphones which sound very good but tend to get very sweaty and don't always stay in place as well as I would like. I was hoping the Push earbuds would work better for me.
Well the answer is, not really. The earbuds are comfortable and stay in place reasonably well. But I did find myself pushing them back into my ears ever 10 minutes or so. The buttons on the side of the earphones are both cool and a drawback. I like that you can adjust the volume with a press of these buttons but I found that because I was constantly pushing them back into my ears I would inadvertantly press the buttons often which pauses the music playback. As long as you're not sweating these headphones stay in place. But I actually had them fall out of my ears after working out for about an hour.
The real deal killer for me was the connection issues I had with them. While working out last night I found that the earphones would randomly lose connection and the music would drop out for about 2 seconds. This happened about 47 times during a 2 hour workout. It probably happened many more times than this as it wasn't until the dropouts began to really annoy me that I started counting them. I don't know if there was interference from other people around me with bluetooth headphones on as well but it was a complete deal breaker for me.
If you are looking for a pair of earphones for wearing around the house or on a plane flight or something these might work well for you. But if you want a good pair of earphones for the gym, these are not the answer.

Works well, miss the bezel, HORRIBLE BATTERY LIFE!
on April 1, 2019
Posted by: darien87
from CA
I have had the Gear S2 Frontier since it came out and I have really liked that smart watch. It is my alarm clock every morning and has all my music stored on it for my daily workouts at the gym. It has been rock solid since day one and I really have no issues with it. I was hoping that the Galaxy Active would be the next step in the smart watch evolution. Unfortunately it has not worked out for me.
On the plus side the Active is nice and light. You barely even know you have it on. Also the band that it comes with is nice and grippy but not too grippy. The watch will stay in place but not feel like it is stuck to your skin. I like to wear my smart watches a little bit loose and not be snug on my wrist. The band of this watch allows me to wear it loose but not have it slide around so much that it is annoying.
On the minus side, coming from the Gear Frontier with the rotating bezel I really found the lack of a bezel on the Active to be a real downgrade. Selecting apps and settings was quite a pain because the screen size is so small. It is easy to accidentally scroll right past what you're looking for. The bezel on the Gear is a much easier way to get to what you want.
The watch face is pretty small. So small in fact that it makes the watch look feminine. I'm sure the Active looks great on a female wrist but on mine it looks a bit girly.
The major deal breaker for me on this watch is that I could not get the heart rate monitor to turn off. I have no idea why someone would want a constant reading of their heart rate. Why is that even a feature? Maybe this is nice when you're doing cardio but I have no need to see my heart rate during the day when I'm at work. The heart rate monitor is the biggest power drain on this watch. Even when I selected "Never" on the heart rate monitor setting I found that whenever the watch was touching my skin the monitor was on. If I took the watch off the flashing green light would turn off. But within a few seconds of putting the watch back on that stupid green light would be flashing again. The first day I tried to use the watch it didn't even make it the whole day before needing to be charged! Not even a single day! It was fully charged in the morning and by the time I was done with my workout at about 7pm it was down to 5% battery.
I called Samsung customer service and they told me to send the watch in for repair. So perhaps I just got a lemon but that's pretty sad to have happen on a review sample. So if the heart rate monitor problem I experienced was just a glitch on my sample then I would say this is a nice watch. If the monitor being on 24/7 is how this watch works then that is pretty stupid and Samsung needs to change that.
Reviewing my sample unit as-is I cannot recommend this smart watch. Shame.

Cowabunga dude!
on March 18, 2019
Posted by: darien87

Can't believe I just wrote that but, it kind of fits. This device is called a surfboard and it works really well. So yes, "Cowabunga dude".
I've been a customer of Charter/Spectrum for a few years now because unfortunately they are the only game in town for internet in my area. Since we moved in we've had the modem/router that Charter gave us. That was about 3 years ago. We have never had lightning fast internet but I tried power line adapters, (helped a bit) then most recently I bought the Eero Wi-Fi extenders (helped some more).
The Aaris surfboard was super easy to set up. Just plugged the coaxial cable into the back of the router and connected my Eero with an ethernet cable. I did have to make a call to Charter to have them activate the router but as the Aaris box says it was compatible with Charter so getting it working was no problem.
After getting the surfboard going I checked my speeds. Before the surfboard I was getting about 20Mbps dowload speed. After the Aaris is was getting 60-70Mbps! That's a heck of an improvement.
I'd say beyond a doubt this thing works. The only negative I have found is that the blue status lights on the front of the router are incredibly bright. So bright that you could use the thing as a night light. Fortunately I have the router in an upstairs bedroom. I had originally planned to put the router in my A/V cabinet in the living room but the brightness of the lights would have been the end of that.

Great idea, poor execution
on January 25, 2019

I have to admit that I am not the biggest fan of earbuds. To get good sound from them you have to jam them into your ears and get a good seal to keep noise out and the bass in. The problem with earbuds, at least in my experience, is that they never stay in place for very long. Such is the case with the V-Moda headphones. When you initially squeeze the buds into your ears they do indeed sound great. They have a nice neutral sound with a surprising amount of bass. They put out almost as much bass as my Under Armour Project Rock headphones. Unfortunately they work themselves out of your ears pretty quickly and the sound becomes very thin. I found that while working out in the gym basically any sort of movement makes these earbuds shift. When I sweat and use a towel to wipe off my head, I invariably ended up bumping the buds at some point which would pull them out of my ears.
The V-Moda's do have some good points. They come with 4 sets of different sized buds. I actually found that the largest size worked the best for me. They come with clips that go over your ears to help hold them in place as well as little rubber "wings" that fit inside the cartilage of your ears that you can install if you don't like the over the ear style of holders. But I found that putting the wings on was kind of a pain. The instructions tell you to slip the wing over the bud and then twist the wing until you line up a mark on the wing with a mark on the bud. The problem was that the wings are made of a very grippy type of rubber and did not want to move once they were installed on the bud. So the wings ended up not working for me.
The bottom line is that these headphones when installed correctly sounded very good, better than most other earbuds I have tried. The downside is that with ALL earbud headphones getting them to stay in place is an exercise in futility. If you are going to be using these headphones to just listen to music while you walk around the house these will probably work out great for you. But if you want to do any sort of exercise or physical activity then you are going to have to sacrifice some sound quality as the buds eventually work their way out of your ears.

Pretty good but lacking a couple of features
By darien87 from CA
This is my 5th fitness tracker now. The others I have used are the:
Withings 02 Pulse
Adidas Fit
Garmin Vivosmart
Samsung Gear Fit
I think this is the one I will be sticking with. It does just about everything I want my fitness tracker to do but it lacks a couple of features I liked in others. Of all the ones I've tried so far I think the Garmin Vivosmart is the best. But I ended up returning that one because it would constantly lose sync with my phone and had to be manually re-paired. It would happen multiple times a day and I just got tired of having to go through the pairing process again every time. It was very frustrating.
The Polar Loop has quite a few things going for it:
* Looks good - I originally had the basic black model but exchanged it for the purple, (Black Currant).
* Comfortable to wear - I wear the band loose enough that it slides around a bit on my wrist so I barely know it's there.
* Connects easily to the HR6 or HR7 Polar heart rate strap. I wanted a tracker with heart rate function because I do more weight lifting than cardio so I wanted a device that would give me accurate calories burned while lifting.
* No problems pairing with my phone.
For the cons:
* Wrist band must be cut to size - I found this process to be very tedious. I'm not a watch maker. Using the tiny tool to remove and reinstall the retaining pins was very frustrating. I actually lost one of the pins because it immediately shot across the room when I took it out of the buckle. Luckily Polar provides you with a spare pin just for this issue.
* App is still in Beta and is pretty basic.
* Proprietary charging cable - I don't know why all of these tracker manufacturers can't just use a standard USB charging cable like on Android phones. I've had 3 or 4 different brands of phone in the last couple of years and every one of them had the same charging cable. The Polar one connects to the back of the device and it is a bit of a pain feeding it around the buckle to connect it.
Overall I like this tracker but if not for the pairing issue with the Garmin Vivosmart I would have stayed with that one.

EDIT - 1-9-15
So I've had the Loop for a few weeks now and it's still pretty decent. I wish that you could see how much battery life is left other than by plugging the Loop in to charge. It would be nice if you could see it on the display.
Also, there have been a few network outages where I have not been able to sync my Loop with their site. This is pretty frustrating. Polar's customer service is horrible!!! I have called them 3 times and each time eventually hung up after waiting on hold for about 10 minutes. The 3rd time I got my questions by using their online chat so I guess they don't completely suck. But with Garmin I got a live person on the phone right away every time. I really wished the Vivosmart had worked better with my phone because that seems to be the best of all the trackers I've tried.

Great fitness tracker, but limited...

After owning this device for about 10 days I decided to return it. Don't get me wrong, it is a very nice device. I like the fitness features, and there are so many exercise choices to choose from. I like that you can add music to the device and listen to your tracks with out having your phone on you. (However it does require Bluetooth headphones) The screen is vivid and I never had to turn the brightness up to 10 even when outdoors. Step counter seemed to work fine (although sometimes I noticed it stopped counting steps randomly through out the day).
I really only have 2 major complaints about it. While you can pair this device with any Android smartphone, you are severely limited in the apps/watch faces that show up in the Samsung store. With my Nexus 6P I had only 8 watch faces to choose from. When I paired it with the Samsung S7, there were over 30. Apps were the same way, about 4 showed up in the store for the Nexus, but many more appeared once it was connected to a Samsung phone.
Most importantly: (my major reason for returning the device) The band design on this thing is clearly flawed. I cannot tell you how many times the band popped out of place almost causing the device to fall off. Sometimes I noticed when it happened, but other times I just noticed something felt off and looked down to see the device hanging off my wrist. Thankfully the band has a built in loop or this thing would have dropped a ton (and I only wore it for 10 days!). Until Samsung makes an option to replace the band I really cannot recommend this product.
This device really is an improvement over the original Gear Fit but the band and limited app/watch face options on non Samsung phones outweighed all the positive things that I liked about this device,

Mine popped off numerous times also, (about 4 times in a week). I returned mine for the same reasons you noted as well as the atrocious battery life. I could barely get a day and a half out of mine and that was with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned off.
