I have an asus transformer that needs a new usb cable. Could this replace it or is there something else?
It'll work only if you're needing an Apple only lightening on one end. This cord has USB on one end and the lightening on the other. If you're hooking your asus to an Apple device, then ok.

what apps support the video out function?
I downloaded a movie from itunes, that is now in the video app on my iphone 4s. The TV however remains a black screen. All connections are tight. Should I use another app? Or what is the real problem?
Are you using airplay with Apple tv? Or sharing on your network? Need to know how you are slinging the movie to your tv.
